*Hey,

Archer!

Recounting the spark for his childhood

interest in type, famed type designer
Tobias Frere-Jones describes his fascination with why the jars of jam his
mother brought back from the UK
looked so quintessentially British. He
inspected the labels of the jars carefully for a year; he told AIGA that, It took
me a while, but eventually I figured
out it wasnt the proportion of the jar or
the colorsit was something about the
letters. From that point on, FrereJones became invested in the practice
of designing type and training his design eye. His early successes in designing eight to nine fonts by the
time he graduated from high school
and best-of-age honors in a national
competition for type were only the beginnings of his long legacy in modern
typography. This innate sense for the
nuance of letters continued on to influence much of his body of work.

Frere-Jones earned his Bachelors
of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from
the prestigious Rhode Island School
of Design in 1992. At that point,
he was appreciative of the artistic
training he received from school,
but had felt lacking in his education of good typography design. The
path of his career came out of his
constant curiosity and restlessness
at RISD; he drew type outside of
classes, gained connections to major figures in the type design world
such as Erik Spiekermann, Matthew
Carter, and Neville Brody, and soon
he was an undergraduate student
with multiple successful typefaces
under his belt. By the time he graduated, he had already designed Garage Gothic, FF Delores, and Armada, and worked closely to complete
large portions of Neville Brodys type
designs at Font Bureau. (Book, 24/27)

He continued to explore his deep

passions for type design by commuting to Boston frequently to work at
Font Bureau throughout the summer
before and during his senior year
of college. This was where he developed his craft as he went on to spend
nearly a decade in Bostons Font
Bureau, developing his repertoire and
creating some of the studios most
popular, iconic typefaces. The quick
transitions he made to designing at a
professional level left Frere-Jones in
the position to learn actively through
his commercial design experiences.
Under the mentorship of various great
designers, Frere-Jones natural talent
flourished and helped place his works
in many popular publications and
corporate campaigns. His highway
signage-inspired typeface Interstate
was adopted as the U.S. census visual
identity and visual standards.
