1. (a) Discuss Bourdon gauge for pressure measurement.


(b) The pressure of a gas in a pipe line is measured with a mercury manometer
having one limb open to the atmosphere. If the difference in the height of
mercury in two limbs is 576 mm, calculate the gas pressure. The barometer
reads 760 mm Hg, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.79 m/s2 , and the density
of mercury is 13,640 kg/m3 .

2. (a) State various alternative statements of first law of thermodynamics.
(b) Is it possible to prove the laws of thermodynamics? Discuss in brief.

3. It is desired to design a tank to store 10 k mol methane at 6.0 MPa and 300 K.
Determine the size of the tank using the Red-lich-Kwong equation of state. The
critical constants of methane are Pc = 4.60MPa and Tc = 190.6 K.

4. (a) An ideal gas ( =1.4) at 705K and 0.48 MPa enters a reversible and adiabatic
nozzle with negligible velocity and leaves at 0.11MPa. Calculate the exit
velocity of the gas.
(b) Define convergent nozzle.

5. A reversible heat engine interacts with four reservoirs at 1000K, 600K, 400K and
300K. It absorbs 2000 kJ energy as heat from the reservoir at 1000 K, rejects 600
kJ energy as heat to the reservoir at 300 K and delivers 1200 kJ work. Determine
the energy interaction with the other two reservoirs.

6. An insulated containers has 1 kg super cooled liquid at -120 C. Suppose a negligible
amount of ice is added as a seed to aid solidification, Calculate the mass of water
which solidifies and the change in entropy associated with the process. Cp for water
is 4.2 k J/ kg - K and the latent heat of fusion of water at 00 C is 333.43 kJ/kg.

7. Suppose a Carnot refrigerator operating between -260 C and 420 C consumes 0.7 kW
power. Determine the rate of energy removal (QL ) from the cold body. If a Carnot
heat pump operating between the same reservoirs is required, which rejects (QH ) to
the high temperature body at the same rate as the carnot refrigerator is extracting
from the cold body (QL ). Calculate the power consumption.

8. A definite man of mercury is heated from 1 bar 200 C to 440 C under constant volume
conditions. What is the final pressure, if:

1. (a) What are various prefixes for SI units.


(b) An astronaut weighs 700 N in Houston, Texas, where the local acceleration of
gravity is 9.792 ms2 . What are astronauts mass and weight on the moon,
where g is 1.67 ms2 ?

2. One mole of an ideal gas at 0.5 MPa ( =1.4) and 305 K (state 1) is heated at
constant pressure till the volume is doubled (state 2), and then it is allowed to
expand reversibly and adiabatically till the temperature is reduced to 305 K (state
3). Calculate the heat and work interaction. If it is desired to restore the system
from state 3 to its original state by a reversible isothermal path, determine the
amount of work to the done on the system.

3. If one kmol of methane is stored in 0.3 m3 tank at 300 K, estimate the pressure of
the gas using Red lich-Kwong equation of state. The critical constants of methane
are Pc = 4.60MPa and Tc = 190.6 K.

4. An ideal gas ( =1.4) at 0.1 MPa and 300K enters an adiabatic compressor at the
rate of 1mol/s and leaves at 750K. calculate the power consumed by the compressor.
Make simplifying assumptions.

(b) Discuss how limitations of first law disappear in second law of thermodynamics.

6. One gram mol of nitrogen behaving as an ideal gas undergoes an irreversible isothermal compression from 1 to 10 atm at 1270 C in a piston cylinder assembly. The
heat removed from the gas as a result of compression process is absorbed by heat
sink maintained at a temperature of 270 C. The irreversible process is 83% efficient
as compared to reversible process. Calculate S of the gas, S of the reservoir
and Stotal .

(b) Calculate the COP of a Carnot refrigerator and a Carnot heat pump, if both
the devices are operating between the reservoirs at -110 C and 410 C. [6+10]

300 kPa. If the compressor efficiency is 75 percent, what is the work required and
what are the properties of the discharge stream?

5. A reversible engine operating between a reservoir at 605K and the ambient atmosphere at 305 K, drives a refrigerator operating between 245K and the ambient
atmosphere. Determine the ratio of energy rejected by both the devices to the
ambient atmosphere to the energy absorbed by the engine from the reservoir at
605K.

6. A hot oil at the rate of 5300 kg/hr is cooled from 2030 C to 530 C in a heat exchanger
by using cooling water entering the heat exchanger at a flow rate of 2530 kg/hr
and 220 C. Assuming no heat losses from the exchanger, compute the total change
in entropy of the process. Whether process is reversible? Specific heats of oil and
water may be taken 2512.0 and 4186.8 Joules/kg-K respectively.

7. A water cooler supplies chilled water at 6.50 C, when water is supplied to it at 240 C
at a rate of 0.77 litres/min., while the power consumed is 220 Watts. Compare
the COP of this refrigeration plant with that of the ideal refrigeration cycle for a
similar situation.

(b) The fundamental relation of a particular thermodynamic system is given by

1. (a) Discuss in brief, how the pressure is measured?


(b) A mercury manometer is used to measure the pressure drop of water flowing in
a pipe line. If the difference of the mercury levels in the two limbs reads 25cm,
determine the pressure drop. The density of mercury is 13.6 103 kg/m3 and
that of water is 1.0 103 kg/m3 .

2. A fluid is confined in a cylinder by a spring loaded frictionless piston, so that the
pressure in the fluid is a linear function of the volume (p = a+b V). The internal
energy of the fluid is given by the following equation,
U = 38+ 3.02 pV,
Where U is in kJ, p in kPa and V in cubic metre. If the fluid changes from initial
state of 170 kPa, 0.03m3 to a final state of 400 kPa, 0.06m3 ; with no work other
than that done on the piston, find the direction and magnitude of the work and
heat transfer.

5. An inventor claims to have designed a heat engine, which absorbs 1530 kJ and 170
kJ energy as heat from reservoirs at 1030K and 302K respectively and rejects 630
kJ energy as heat to a reservoir at 630K. It delivers 1070 kJ work. Judge, whether
the claim is acceptable or not.

6. A hot oil at the rate of 5500 kg/hr is cooled from 2100 C to 600 C in a heat exchanger
by using cooling water entering the heat exchanger at a flow rate of 2600 kg/hr
and 250 C. Assuming no heat losses from the exchanger, compute the total change
in entropy of the process. Whether process is reversible? Specific heats of oil and
water may be taken 2512.0 and 4186.8 Joules/kg-K respectively.

7. A refrigeration plant for a food store operates as a reversed Carnot heat engine cycle.
The store is to the maintained at a temperature of -5.50 C and the heat transfer
from the store to the cycle is at the rate of 5.5kW. If the heat is transferred from

to drive the plant.
