Why did we venture in Sardines Making?

Overabundance and under utilization of sardinella (lawlaw) is the
main reason for the birth of Magallanes Food Products. Magallanes as an
agro-fishery based municipality has posted a considerable increase in fishery
production during the past five years from 2004, specifically commercial
fishing of lawlaw.
With vast supply of an average of 50 boats daily ashore in this
municipality, and with at least 25 freezers (875 klg) load of lawlaw catch per
boat are being trade in to local buyers, some are thrown and washed in seashore
to rot. This caused major pollution to the seas and the communities. While no
one ventured on value adding of said resource in the past years, in 2006
wholesaler plied the town hauling these fish catch to Navotas, Metro Manila for
canning and further processing.
Introducing new technology in processing sardinella was initiated by
Magallanes Food Products in 2007, to lead in fulfilling its social responsibility
of optimum utilization and conservation of marine products specifically in
times of overabundance. Our venture raised the pricing level of lawlaw from
P10.00 in 2007 to P25.00 in 2010. It also raised income of at least 3 workers
and contributed to the economy of Magallanes, Sorsogon.

A memorandum of agreement was signed for the purpose. At this day,
MFP is awaiting the result of the request for assistance from DA-BAR.
The future
Magallanes Food Products commits to product excellence and
sustainability in all aspects of its production. Its advocacy is firm on
utilization and conservation of marine resources. It is never our
principle to over exploit but rather maximize utilization as it is abundant
during the period. Responsible commercialization of abundant marine
resource is part of our commitment today and the future. Our

memorandum of agreement with the LGU of Magallanes is to establish

capacities to improve quality of lives of Magallanes people. We stay

accountable for this, as long as we are provided standard facilities for

the purpose.
