Art and Visual Studies 2015

Ashgates art-book publishing consists of two strands: specialized, scholarly research monographs and essay collections in
Visual Studies, published under the Ashgate imprint, and illustrated art books for specialists, professionals and enthusiasts,
published under the Lund Humphries imprint.
Ashgates Visual Studies programme features rigorously peer-reviewed, high quality original research by authors from around
the globe.
We continue to expand the Visual Studies publishing programme, from the medieval period through to the present day.
Important development areas, for which book proposals are especially welcome, are: womens/gender studies; critical race
studies; art historiography; book/publishing history and print culture; modernism/modernist studies; the interrelationship
between art history and the history of science; religion and visual studies; games and play in visual culture.
We are expanding the list to include essential reference works such as Ashgate Research Companions which provide current
and comprehensive surveys of given topics. We welcome both proposals for reference works, and suggestions about the kinds
of reference works that would be most useful to art historians.
Lund Humphries, part of the Ashgate Publishing Group since 1999, is a long-established publisher of illustrated art books.
More details about the Lund Humphries publishing programme can be found on its website.
Submissions to Ashgates Visual Studies list should be sent to Erika Gaffney (Early Modern Visual Studies) or
Margaret Michniewicz (Medieval, C18th-Present Day) in our US offices. Submissions to the Lund Humphries list should be
sent to Lucy Clark in our UK offices.

Essays in Honor of Annemarie Weyl Carr

Edited by Nicholas Temple, University of Huddersfield,

UK, John Shannon Hendrix, University of Lincoln, UK
and Christian Frost, Birmingham City University, UK
A welcome addition to a growing constellation of titles in
architectural humanities. This coedited volume of studies
offers thought-provoking insights into the architectonic
significance of Grossetestes intellectual oeuvre in its scholastic
mediaeval context. It also advances novel theoretical directives
in analyzing the architecture of Lincoln Cathedral under
Grossetestes Bishopric in its English Gothic milieu.
Nader El-Bizri, American University of Beirut
Bishop Robert Grosseteste and Lincoln Cathedral is an
in-depth investigation of Grossetestes relationship to the
medieval cathedral at Lincoln and the surrounding city.
This book will contribute to the understanding of Gothic
architecture in early thirteenth century England most
specifically, how forms and spaces were conceived in relation
to the cultural, religious and political life of the period. The
essays make an important contribution to our understanding
of the relation between architecture, theology, politics and
society during the Middle Ages, and how religious spaces
were conceived and experienced.

The Books and the Life of

Judith of Flanders

Times Literary Supplement

$109.95

This is a study of the artistic and political context that led to

the production of Bibliothque Nationale de France, codex
grec 54, one of the most ambitious and complex manuscripts
of the Byzantine era. Kathleen Maxwells multi-disciplinary
approach includes codicological and paleographical
evidence together with New Testament textual criticism,
artistic and historical analysis. Maxwell concludes that
Paris 54 was designed to eclipse its contemporaries
and to physically embody a new relationship between
Constantinople and the Latin West.

Through analysis of the books and art objects Judith of

Flanders commissioned and collected, Dockray-Miller
demonstrates that Judith consciously deployed patronage
as a cultural strategy in her political and marital maneuvers.
Including full colour reproductions from Monte Cassino
MS 437 and Fulda Landesbibliothek MS Aa.21, this book is
a fascinating account of a woman who thrived in spite of
being on the losing side of the Norman Conquest and the

Hagia Sophia and the

Byzantine Aesthetic Experience
Nadine Schibille, University of Sussex, UK
Paramount in the shaping of early Byzantine identity was the
construction of the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople
(532537 CE). This book examines the edifice from the
perspective of aesthetics to define the concept of beauty and
the meaning of art in early Byzantium. Byzantine aesthetic
thought is re-evaluated against late antique Neoplatonism
and the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius that offer fundamental
paradigms for the late antique attitude towards art and
beauty.

SANCTITY IN GLOBAL
PERSPECTIVE
Series Editors: Shahzad Bashir, Stanford University,

Pittsburgh, USA and John Stratton Hawley,
Barnard College, USA

The Geometry of Creation

Architectural Drawing and the Dynamics
of Gothic Design
Robert Bork, University of Iowa, USA
As the first English-language book-length study of Gothic
geometrical design procedures, The Geometry of Creation
presents an invaluable contribution to the field of medieval
architecture. Scholars might debate particular aspects of
this monumental book, but overall, it marks a decisive step
towards new discoveries about the creative processes of
medieval designers.
Speculum

Published under the aegis of The Hagiography Society,

this series is dedicated to exploring the concept of
sanctity in literary, artistic, ideational, and sociohistorical
dimensions. Sanctity in Global Perspective publishes
monographs and edited volumes that illuminate the
lives of saintly figures, the communities dedicated to
those figures, and the material evidence of their cults.
Our aim is to foster critical scholarship that offers novel
conceptualizations and the possibility of crosspollination
of ideas across traditions, geographical regions, and
academic disciplines. The series is open to all areas of
scholarship, without restriction as to religious traditions
or time periods.

This book offers a new perspective on Gothic architectural

creativity. It shows, in a series of geometrical case studies,
how Gothic design evolved over time, in two senses: in the
hours of the draftsmans labour, and across the centuries of the
late Middle Ages. In each case, a series of computer graphics
show how a medieval designer could have developed his
architectural concept step by step, using only basic geometrical
operations. Taken together, these analyses demonstrate
remarkable methodological continuity across the Gothic era,
and the development of sophisticated permutations on venerable
design themes.

Studies on the Imperial Monuments

at Mrida and Tarragona

Assaf Pinkus, Tel Aviv University, Israel

The phenomenon of iconoclasm, expressed through hostile

actions towards images, has occurred in many different
cultures throughout history. The destruction and mutilation
of images is often motivated by a blend of political and
religious ideas and beliefs, and the distinction between
various kinds of iconoclasms is not absolute. In order to
explore further the long and varied history of iconoclasm the
contributors to this volume consider iconoclastic reactions
to various types of objects, both in the very recent and
distant past. Whilst the texts are addressed primarily to those
researching the Western world, the volume contains material
which will also be of interest to students of the Middle East.

Pter Bokody, Plymouth University, UK

A gripping read that reassures me that careful, ambitious,

radical scholarship is still possible within the field of medieval
art history. Assaf Pinkus offers a bold and smart analysis
based in careful readings of a wealth of classic and recent
scholarship, set against the authors own observations.
The study is provocative and timely, clearly written and
jargon free. I look forward to seeing the scholarly reaction
to it and to using it in teaching. It is a landmark book and one
with which all scholars of Gothic art will need to contend.
Nina Rowe, Fordham University, USA
This book constitutes the first art-historical attempt to
theorize the idiosyncratic character of German Gothic
sculpture and trace the high and late medieval notions of the
living statue and the simulacrum in religious, lay and travel
literature. In addressing a range of works, from the oeuvre
of the Naumburg Master through Freiburg-im-Breisgau to
the imperial art of Vienna and Prague, Pinkus offers a new
understanding of the function, production, and use of
three-dimensional images in late-medieval Germany.

Bokodys book combines visual sensitivity, methodological
variety, historical erudition and theoretical sophistication. His
work encourages us to think with more precision and flexibility
about the concepts of realism and reflexivity as applied to
the achievements of Giotto and his contemporaries and in
relation to subsequent generations of artists. Bokody provides
fresh insights for all those who study, admire and teach
this material.
Joanna Cannon, Courtauld Institute of Art, UK
The rebirth of realistic representation in Italy around 1300
led to the materialization of a pictorial language which
dominates global visual culture even today. This book offers
the first comprehensive study of Italian meta-painting in the
age of Giotto and sheds new light on the early modern and
modern history of the phenomenon. The analysis of pictorial
illusionism and reality effect together with the liturgical,
narrative and typological role of images-within-images

Animals and Early Modern
Identity

Art, Gender and Religious

Devotion in Grand Ducal Tuscany

The Ashgate Research

Companion to Giorgio Vasari

Edited by Pia F. Cuneo, University of Arizona, USA

Alice E. Sanger, Open University, UK

Edited by David J. Cast, Bryn Mawr College, USA

Animals and Early Modern Identity provides a wealth of new

work in early modern animal studies, ranging across Europe
and into the non-European world of exploration and colonial
encounters and in the process engaging such varied topics
as pedagogy, animal husbandry, the visual arts, trade and
travel, court culture, philosophy, and sport. Should attract
the attention of a wide scholarly audience interested in the
early modern period and its various appropriations of animals
and animality.
Bruce Boehrer, Florida State University, USA

WOMEN AND GENDER IN THE EARLY MODERN WORLD

The three women at the center of the book are deserving

of this focus and study, and there is a lot of excellent new
material here. The focus on rituals, on pilgrimage, on display
of relics, gives this study a broader set of issues to consider
than simply art patronage; and the emphasis on the visual
character of events such as weddings, entries, festivals,
processions, and funerals is especially welcome.
Ann Roberts, Lake Forest College, USA

What roles did animals play in the construction of early

modern identities? In this volume, international scholars
working in the disciplines of history, art history and literature
provide suggestive and probing answers. Their essays
investigate how animals horses, dogs, pigs, fish, cattle,
sheep, birds, rhinoceroses, even sea-monsters and other
creatures served people in Europe, England, the Americas
and Africa to defend, contest or transcend the boundaries
of early modern identities.

Positing Medici womens patronage as a network of

devotional, entrepreneurial and cultural activities that
depended on seeing and being seen, Alice Sanger focuses
on the intersection of the visual and the sacred at the Medici
court of the later sixteenth to early seventeenth centuries.
By examining the religious dimensions of the Medici grand
duchesses art patronage and collecting activities alongside
their visually resonant devotional and public acts, this book
adds a new dimension to the current scholarship on womens
patronage in early modern Italy.

this is an exceptionally interesting and meticulous

Essays in Honour of Deborah Howard

Edited by Nebahat Avcioglu, Hunter College, CUNY,
USA and Allison Sherman, Queens University, Canada
This absorbing collection of essays on early modern Italy
combines shrewd cultural analysis with often surprising case
studies, ranging from the planning of St Andrews as a new
Rome, to sharply focused accounts of works by Michelangelo,
Titian and Veronese. Following the groundbreaking example
of Deborah Howards scholarship, a number of incisive essays
by architectural historians offer a timely reminder of how
art historical understanding is enriched by engagement
with architectural history in its broadest sense.
Paul Hills, Professor Emeritus,

Showcasing both the diversity within and the porosity
between the centre and periphery in Renaissance art,
this volume explores the material mechanisms for the
transmission and evolution of ideas, artistic training and
networks, as well as the dynamics of collaboration and
exchange between artists, theorists and patrons. The
chapters, each with a wealth of groundbreaking research
and previously unpublished documentary evidence, as
well as innovative methodologies, offer new interpretations

The Emblem in Early

Modern Europe
Contributions to the Theory of the Emblem
Peter M. Daly, McGill University, Canada

$119.95

The emblem was big business in early-modern Europe, used

extensively not only in printed books and broadsheets, but
also to decorate pottery, metalware, furniture, glass and
windows and numerous other domestic, devotional and
political objects. At its most basic level simply a combination
of symbolic visual image and texts, an emblem is a hybrid
composed of words and picture. However, as this book
demonstrates, understanding the precise and often multiple
meaning, intention and message that emblems conveyed
can prove a remarkably slippery process.

How did gender figure in the routes and spaces of the
early modern world, both real and imagined, from the inner
spaces of the body to the furthest reaches of the globe?
Essays in this volume address this question from a variety
of disciplinary perspectives, with topics key to the spatial
turn, such as borders and their permeability, actual and
metaphorical spatial crossings, travel and displacement,
and the built environment.

WOMEN AND GENDER IN THE EARLY MODERN WORLD

Examining innovations in Mary Magdalene imagery

including her dress in northern art 1430 to 1550, Penny
Jolly explores how the saints widespread popularity drew
upon her ability to embody oppositions and embrace a
range of paradoxical roles: sinner-prostitute and saint,

This ambitious study deals with two of the most complex
artists of the seventeenth century, who, moreover, represent
two different artistic traditions. Habsburg myth making,
the emblematic tradition, the mythographic tradition, and
innumerable ancient texts are adduced by the authors to
build a set of associative meanings around the mythological
paintings created for the Torre de la Parada. The authors
treat intention and reception with subtlety and deftness, and
offer up a rich range of possible meanings for this intriguing
pictorial ensemble.
Giles Knox, Indiana University, USA
Analyzing the decorative mythological imagery of the
hunting lodge of King Philip IV of Spain, this study
illuminates the dialogical nature of a painted program,
designed largely by Peter Paul Rubens, and supplemented
by Diego Velzquez. Careful examination of surviving images
in their broader intellectual context reveals their literary,
rhetorical, and philosophical underpinnings, and elucidates
the complementary perspectives of these two great artists.

Lady Anne Bacon Drury (15721624) devised dozens of panels comprised of
pictures and Latin mottoes for the walls of her closet or study. The panels
functioned as a book of meditations to enable her well-connected,

VISUAL CULTURE IN EARLY MODERNITY

Series Editor: Allison Levy
A forum for the critical inquiry of the visual arts in the early modern world, Visual Culture in Early Modernity promotes new models of inquiry and new narratives of early modern art and its
history. We welcome proposals for both monographs and essay collections that consider the cultural production and reception of images and objects. The range of topics covered in this series
includes, but is not limited to, painting, sculpture and architecture as well as material objects, such as domestic furnishings, religious and/or ritual accessories, costume, scientific/medical
apparata, erotica, ephemera and printed matter. We seek innovative investigations of western and non-western visual culture produced between 1400 and 1800.

Apostolic Iconography and

Florentine Confraternities
in the Age of Reform
Douglas N. Dow, Kansas State University, USA
This impressive volume by Dow helps fill a scholarly
void in books on religious painting in the last quarter of
the 16th century in Florence. The text is meticulous and
scholarly, supported by copious notes, bibliography, and
original illustrations appropriate to such an ambitious and
groundbreaking study. Highly recommended. Upper-division
undergraduates through researchers/faculty.
Choice
Focusing on artists and architectural complexes which until
now have eluded scholarly attention, this study examines
three different confraternal organizations in sixteenthcentury Florence. Douglas Dow explores how, through the
emphasis on the apostles within their art programs, these
corporate groups adapted existing iconography to their
own purposes. He argues that their willful engagement with
apostolic themes reveals the complex interaction between
these organizations and the churchs program of reform.

...a strong and engaged spectrum of essays by leading
scholars that reflects the range and depth of Caravaggio

As this collection makes clear, the paths to grasping the

complexity of Caravaggios art are multiple and variable.
Offering new or recently updated interpretations of the works
of Caravaggio and the Caravaggisti, this book deals with
all the major aspects of Caravaggios paintings: technique,

Nirit Ben-Aryeh Debby, Ben-Gurion University of the

Ilenia Coln Mendoza, University of Central Florida, USA

will be very useful for historians of hagiography and saints

cults, especially in the early modern period. For art historians,
too, the book will be interesting when tracing changes in
iconographical representations of saints over time. I hope
that more studies of the visual traditions in other countries
will follow where Debby has pioneered The ten pages of
colour plates and the 51 black and white images are not only
beautiful, they genuinely support the arguments made within
the volume.

Analyzing seventeenth-century images of the dead Christ

produced by Gregorio Fernndez, author Ilenia Coln
Mendoza reveals hitherto unnoticed connections between
the sculptures and contemporary liturgical sources. She
investigates how and why Fernndez and his patrons
manipulated these images in connection with the religious
literature of the time to produce striking images that moved
the faithful to devotion.

this book, a significant contribution to research in art history,
sermon studies, gender studies, and theology, examines
the representations of St Clare of Assisi in the Italian visual

and in the face of Muslim-Christian encounter of the early
modern era.

Edited by Sara F. Matthews-Grieco,

Includes 10 colour and 51 b&w illustrations

This volume convincingly argues that historical studies

have long reflected the double standard by which women are
primarily blamed for adultery, while little scholarly attention has
been paid to the male side of the coin. For the first time a team
of historians, art historians and scholars of drama and literature
investigate this ubiquitous aspect of the erotic cultures of
the past by close reading of a wide and imaginative range of
sources and contexts, including iconography. By so doing,
contributors shed new light on a variety of diverse topics such
as Renaissance comedy, medical empiricism, military culture
and dynastic history. The book, which fills quite a curious gap,
is highly recommended to scholars of Renaissance and early
modern European society, of gender and the body, of sexual
mores, and of imagery and stereotypes in the longue dure.

Bodies mangled, limbs broken, skin flayed, blood spilled: the
art of the late medieval and early modern periods contains
myriad examples of spectacular unmaking. The martyrdoms
of saints, stories of justice, and reports of the atrocities of
war provided fertile ground for scenes of bodily desecration.

The Ethics of Ornament

Fashioning the Certosa di San Martino

Towards an Epistemology of Vision for

Italian Renaissance Art and Culture

J. Nicholas Napoli, Pratt Institute, USA

The Carthusian monks at San Martino began a series of
decorative campaigns in the 1580s, transforming their church
into a jewel of marble revetment, painting, and sculpture.
These aesthetic qualities generate a moral conflict: few
religious orders honored the ideals of poverty so ardently yet
decorated so sumptuously. In this, the first English-language
study of a key monument in Naples, Napoli explores this
conflict and how it sought resolution amidst the realities of
early modern Naples, shedding new light on the Neapolitan
baroque, industries of art in the age before capitalism, and
the relation of art, architecture, and ornament.

Visual Acuity and the Arts

of Communication in Early
Modern Germany
Edited by Jeffrey Chipps Smith, University of Texas, USA
During the early modern period, visual imagery was put to
ever new uses as many disciplines adopted visual criteria for
testing truth claims, representing knowledge, or conveying
information. Religious propagandists, political writers,
satirists, cartographers, the scientific community, and
others experimented with uses of visual images. Artists,
writers, preachers and musicians, among others, often
employed visual images to connect with their audiences.
Contributors to this interdisciplinary collection explore how
the exponential growth in images, especially prints, impacted
the intellectual horizons and the visual awareness of viewers
in early modern Germany.

Exploring for the very first time the global reach and spiritual
dimension of Rococo dcor, particularly in France, Central
Europe, Portugal, Brazil, and Spanish South America,
this study investigates the socio-religious motives for the
importation of this style into an ecclesiastical setting and its

essential modernity.

The first comprehensive study on the role of Italian fashion

and Italian literature, this book emphasizes the centrality

theories of fashion and gauging its impact in the shaping
of codes of civility and taste in Europe and the West. Using
literature to uncover what has been called the animatedness

Early Modern and Renaissance

ehrengiz, Urban Rituals

in Ottoman Istanbul

St. Catherine of Alexandria

in Renaissance Roman Art

B. Deniz alis-Kural, Istanbul Bilgi University, Turkey

Cynthia Stollhans, Saint Louis University, USA

ehrengiz, Urban Rituals and Deviant Sufi Mysticism in

Ottoman Istanbul is thrillingly bold, demonstrating that
the Ottoman sehrengiz were a function of the Melm sufi
order. This is as breath-taking as to say that performances
at the Globe Theatre of Elizabethan England were a function
of a secret mystical order penetrating the highest levels
of government. Yet in this authors hands the exposition
proceeds at a calm, comfortable pace, rigorously supported
and comfortably thorough.

How and why did a medieval female saint from the

Eastern Mediterranean come to be such a powerful symbol
in early modern Rome? This study provides an overview of
the development of the cult of Catherine of Alexandria in
Renaissance Rome, and explores how her imagery was used
to support the religious, political, and/or social agendas of
individual patrons and religious orders.

Victoria Holbrook, author of The Unreadable Shores of Love:

Turkish Modernity and Mystic Romance
Examining the urban culture and landscapes of Istanbul
through ehrengiz, a genre of Ottoman poetry written in
honor of various cities and provincial towns, this book
questions the space culture of the Ottoman world in relation
to practices of orthodox and heterodox Islam and imperial
politics. The author traces how a sixteenth-century marginal
protest movement evolved, by the early eighteenth century,
into a movement of urban space reform.

Play looms ever larger in academe: a growing body

of scholarly literature lies at the nexus of strong
current interest in material culture/the study of

At the same time, play has also begun to transform
aspects of pedagogy most notably, perhaps, through
the rise of games as vectors for instruction. With
these transformations comes, across disciplines, a
concomitant shift in historical interest, one to which
this series is dedicated.

Winner of the 2009 ACE/Mercers International Book Award, Mochizukis text is
much admired for its imaginative power, and for pioneering a full-scale history
of church art of the Dutch Golden Age. ... Filled with interesting information
and new interpretations, it outlines a fascinating trajectory beyond the largely
imageless church interiors of seventeenth-century Holland that is its chief
subject to the fabulous images [...] made by that culture during the Golden Age.

The Spanish Presence in

Sixteenth-Century Italy
Images of Iberia
Edited by Piers Baker-Bates, the Open University,
UK and Miles Pattenden, Jesus College, Oxford, UK
TRANSCULTURALISMS, 14001700

The essays collected here evaluate the broad range of

contexts in which Spaniards were present in early modern
Italy. They consider diplomacy, sanctity, art, politics and even
popular verse. Each essay excavates how Italians who came
into contact with the Spanish crowns power perceived and
interacted with the wider range of identities brought amongst
them by its servants and subjects. Together they demonstrate
what influenced and what determined Italians responses to
Spain; they show Spanish Italy in its full transcultural glory
and how its inhabitants projected its culture throughout
the sixteenth century and beyond.

Art and Christianity

Debunking the myth of the stark white Protestant church interior, this innovative book draws on art history, reformation history
and theology to explain the impact of iconoclasm on the cultural topography of the Dutch Golden Age. Lavishly illustrated with
color photographs of many objects never before published, this study identifies a previously overlooked aspect of iconoclasm:
while acknowledging its destructive force, Mochizuki also discloses its generative power and the remarkable creativity it
unleashed.

EMPIRES AND THE MAKING OF THE MODERN WORLD,

Acadmie Royale: A History in Portraits is full of new

insights-often brilliant ones-into the world of the French Royal
Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Williams approach to
the inner workings of the Academy through close readings of
members portraits and self-portraits, is innovative, refreshing
and inspired-drawing as it does, on anthropological interpretive
models, as well as art historical ones. Original, meticulously
researched and elegantly written, this book will be essential
reading for specialists in many fields including history,
French studies and cultural anthropology, and it will be an
indispensable source for historians of eighteenth-century art.
Melissa Hyde, University of Florida, USA
From its establishment in 1648 until its disbanding in 1793
after the French Revolution, the Acadmie Royale de Peinture
et de Sculpture was the centre of the Parisian art world.
Taking the reader behind the scenes of this elite bastion of
French art theory, education, and practice, and drawing on
both art-historical and anthropological frames of analysis,
this engaging study uncovers the fascinating histories
official and unofficial of that artistic community.

It is often assumed that the verbal and visual languages of
Indigenous people had little influence upon the classification
of scientific, legal, and artistic objects in the metropolises
and museums of nineteenth-century colonial powers.
However colonized locals did more than merely collect
material for interested colonizers. In developing the
concept of anachronism for the analysis of colonial
material this book writes the complex biographies for
five key objects that exemplify, embody, and refract the
tensions of nineteenth-century history.

Art in the Time of Colony is an absorbing, experimental

interrogation of colonial art and encounter in Australia.
The book is notable on many grounds, not least for its fresh
research on the intriguing mid-nineteenth century scientific
traveller Blandowski, almost forgotten until very recently, but
above all for its perspective on art history, from the vantage
point of contemporary art. Khadija von Zinnenburg Carrolls

This book investigates and problematizes the long-held
belief that addiction is legible from the body, thus positioning
visual images as unreliable sources in attempts to identify
alcoholics and drug addicts. Examining paintings, graphic
satire, photographs, advertisements and architectural
sites, Skelly explores such issues as ongoing anxieties
about maternal drinking; the punishment and confinement
of addicted individuals; the mobility of female alcoholics
through the streets and spaces of nineteenth-century
London; and soldiers use of addictive substances such

Martin Bressani, McGill University, Canada
This is a magnum opus, in more than one sense of the term.
An important work, the product of vast research and dedicated
scholarship, Bressanis biographical study is a timely
contribution not only to architectural studies but also to the
field of historical culture in general. Through tracing Violletle-Ducs achievement in relation to the broad transition from
Romanticism to Modernity, Bressani succeeds in bringing out
his wider significance as an artist and thinker, and as a major
figure in French Romanticism.
Stephen Bann, Bristol University, UK
The importance of Eugne-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc
(18141879) within modern architecture cannot be
overstated. Key theoretician of modernism, renowned
restoration architect, medieval archaeologist and champion
of Gothic revivalism, he also published some of the most
influential texts in the history of modern architecture.
Martin Bressani expertly traces Viollet-le-Ducs complex
intellectual development, showing how restoration, in all
its layered meaning, shaped his outlook. Through his life
journey, we follow the route by which the technological
subject was born out of nineteenth-century historicism.

BRITISH ART: HISTORIES AND INTERPRETATIONS

SINCE 1700
Series Editors: David Peters Corbett and Sarah Monks, both at University of East Anglia, UK
This series exists to publish new and rigorous scholarship of the highest quality on British art after 1700. Proposals will
offer new bodies of research or new interpretations, ideally both, and should demonstrate a clear awareness of the proposed
volumes contribution to current and wider art-historical debates.
We define British art broadly to mean art made in the British Isles or by British artists, and particularly welcome proposals
which address the topic from international or comparative cultural perspectives. We also welcome proposals for intellectually
ambitious studies concerning more localised areas, issues and themes within British art during this period.
Above all, we encourage proposals for books on British art which transcend the descriptive in order to offer a broader
methodological and/or historiographical contribution to the discipline of art history.

Kimberly Morse Jones, Sweet Briar College, USA

This first in-depth study of 1860s publication The Graphic

to unearth the modernity of paintings labeled as Social

the changing notions of objectivity and immediacy that
nineteenth-century new media cultivated. In doing so, this
book proposes an alternative trajectory for the development
of modernism that allows for a richer understanding of
nineteenth-century visual culture.

THE HISTORIES OF MATERIAL CULTURE AND

COLLECTING, 17001950

Edited by Karen L. Carter, Kendall College of Art and

Design, Ferris State University, USA and Susan Waller,
University of Missouri-Saint Louis, USA

Series Editor: Michael Yonan, University of Missouri-Columbia, USA

The Histories of Material Culture and Collecting provides a forum for the broad study of object acquisition and collecting
practices in their global dimensions from 1700 to 1950. The series seeks to illuminate the intersections between material
culture studies, art history, and the history of collecting. It takes as its starting point the idea that objects both contributed to
the formation of knowledge in the past and likewise contribute to our understanding of the past today. The human relationship
to objects has proven a rich field of scholarly inquiry, with much recent scholarship either anthropological or sociological
rather than art historical in perspective. Underpinning this series is the idea that the physical nature of objects contributes
substantially to their social meanings, and therefore that the visual, tactile, and sensual dimensions of objects are critical to
their interpretation. gh arts of painting and sculpture, the decorative arts (furniture, ceramics, metalwork, etc.), and everyday
objects of all kinds. The series publishes interdisciplinary and comparative research on objects that addresses one or more of
these perspectives and includes monographs, thematic studies, and edited volumes of essays.

Filling a critical gap in Vienna 1900 studies, this book offers a
new reading of fin-de-sicle culture in the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy by looking at the preoccupation with embroidery,
fabrics, clothing, and fashion. The author resurrects lesser
known critics, practitioners, and curators, while also
discussing the textile interests of better known figures.
Spanning the 50-year life of the Dual Monarchy, this study
uncovers new territory in art history, insists on the crucial
place of women within modernism, and broadens the
cultural history of Habsburg Central Europe.

This collection of essays by an international group of

authors provides fascinating insights into the lives, careers,
and creations of foreign artists who visited Paris or made it
their permanent home at the turn of the nineteenth century.
Foreign Artists and Communities in Modern Paris, 18701914
illuminates the expatriate communities these artists formed,
the international networks of which they became a part, their
interaction (or not) with French Modernism, and the impact
they exerted on the art of others-all against the backdrop of
the difficulty to adjust and survive in a foreign country. For
those interested in international artistic exchanges, this book
is a must-read.

Iron, Ornament and

Architecture in Victorian Britain
Myth and Modernity, Excess
and Enchantment

The Personal Style of a Public Writer

Peter Blake, University of Brighton, UK

Paul Dobraszczyk, University of Manchester, UK

In his study of the journalist George Augustus Sala,

Peter Blake shows how Salas personal style and innovations
in form influenced the New Journalism at the end of the
nineteenth century. Blakes book expands our understanding
of one of the more prominent and interesting journalists and
personalities of the nineteenth century, while also shedding
light on prominent nineteenth-century writers and artists
such as Charles Dickens, Mathew Arnold, William Powell
Frith, Henry Vizetelly and Mary Elizabeth Braddon.

In the half century after the building of the Crystal Palace

(1851), some architects, engineers, manufacturers and
theorists believed that the fusion of iron and ornament
would reconcile art and technology and create a new,
modern architectural language. This book studies the
development of mechanised architectural ornament in
iron in nineteenth-century architecture, its reception and
theorisation, and the contexts in which it flourished. As
such, it offers new ways of understanding the notion of
modernity in Victorian architecture.

Marsha Morton argues that no artist represented the shift
from tradition to innovation in the Wilhelmine Empire (1870s
1880s) more compellingly than Max Klinger. Morton makes
an interdisciplinary examination of Klingers early prints and
drawings within the context of Wilhelmine transformations,
coming to the conclusion that the artists work revealed
the psychological and biological underpinnings of modern
rational man whose drives and passions undermined
bourgeois constructions of society.

Liberty Enshrined
Sally Webster, Graduate Center CUNY, USA
In recent decades, art historians have increasingly recognized
the crucial roles played by visual, material, and public cultures
in the evolution of national identity. Sally Webster significantly
contributes to this discourse with her story of Americas first
monument, a Revolutionary War memorial authorized by the
Continental Congress in 1776, dedicated to General Richard
Montgomery, and installed in New Yorks St. Pauls Church in
1787. Deftly weaving biography, history, and iconography with
accounts of transatlantic exchange, colonial painting, military
battles, and Enlightenment era allegory, Webster demonstrates
how commemoration has been a core American concern since
the earliest days of the republic.

The commemorative tradition in early American art is

considered for the first time in Sally Websters fascinating
study of public monuments and the construction of an
American patronymic tradition. Until now, no attempt has
been made to create a coherent early history of the carved

Websters study provides a new focus on New York City as
the eighteenth-century city in which the European tradition
of public commemoration was reconstituted as monuments

Representing Slavery
Art, artefacts and archives in the collections
of the National Maritime Museum
Edited by Douglas Hamilton and Robert J. Blyth
with essays by James Walvin, David Richardson,
John Oldfield, Hakim Adi, Marcus Wood,
Geoff Quilley, Paul Lovejoy and Jane Webster
This beautifully illustrated work ... Through its essays and
catalogue ... illustrates that slavery and the slave trade involved
more than just slaves working on plantations and that they
affected the entire Atlantic world ... While this book would look
good on a coffee table, it is not simply for show, for by reading
the essays and examining the catalogue, one will also question
and work to understand, the legacies of slavery and abolition
International Journal of Maritime History
Newly available in paperback, Representing Slavery draws on
the extensive collections of the National Maritime Museum,
Greenwich, to offer unique insights into the histories and
legacies of slavery, the slave trade and abolition from the
mid-16th until the early 20th centuries. The book illustrates
and documents a wide range of objects relating to the
slave trade, including maps, photographs, pamphlets and
official publications, ethnographic documents, newspapers,
paintings, prints and drawings. Ten specially commissioned
essays by leading scholars provide a fascinating historical
framework, demonstrating the scale and brutality of slavery,
the form and extent of African resistance, and the widespread
nature of efforts to achieve abolition and emancipation.

revisited. She matches manageable quotes from Ruskin with his often exquisite drawings, and her own immaculate
photographs. It is the friendliest companion to prop up with you, at the prow of a water bus travelling the length of
the Grand Canal....
Maev Kennedy, The Guardian
In Ruskins Venice: The Stones Revisited, newly published in a revised, extended and re-designed edition, photographer Sarah
Quill has selected passages from Ruskins The Stones of Venice and has linked them to her own photographs of Venetian
architecture, so creating a fascinating guide that fuses Ruskins vision of the city with images of the present day.
This new edition incorporates up-to-date views of buildings which have been cleaned since originally photographed. Several
of Ruskins watercolours are included, with extracts and reproductions from his Venetian notebooks, now publicly available,

This brilliant and thoroughly researched book successfully

challenges the widely held belief of architectural historians
that Soane did not have a major or significant influence on
his contemporaries or successors. Our view of Soane will thus
be transformed by Bradburys detailed and fresh account of
19th- and 20th-century architecture.

Edited by James H. Rubin, State University of New

Institute at Stony Brook, USA
At once historically grounded and theoretically sophisticated,
this book offers new approaches to modernisms paradigmatic
rival sisters.
Juliet Bellow, American University, USA and author of
Modernism on Stage
Introducing the concept of music and painting as rival
sisters during the nineteenth century, this interdisciplinary
collection explores the productive exchange from rivalry
to inspiration to collaboration - between the two media in
the age of Romanticism and Modernism. The volume traces
the relationship between art and music, from the opposing
claims for superiority of the early nineteenth century, to
the emergence of the concept of synesthesia around 1900.

STUDIES IN HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY

With her background in cartography and her previous research

on women in mapmaking, Judith Tyners book Stitching
the World: Embroidered Maps and Womens Geographical
Education gives us a fascinating new perspective to the
study of needlework. Bringing together examples from both
Britain and America, this book documents known examples
and provides a rich contextual analysis of their role in the
education of women.
Linda Eaton, Winterthur Museum, USA
The period from the late eighteenth century until about 1840
coincided with major changes in educational theories and
practices, especially for girls, and this book uses needlework
maps and globes to chart a broader discussion of womens

embroidered globes represent a transition in womens
education from accomplishments in the eighteenth century
to challenging geographic education and conventional map

Drawing on new archival sources, sculptors and objects,

STUDIES IN ART HISTORIOGRAPHY

Series Editor: Richard Woodfield, University of Birmingham, UK
The aim of this series is to support and promote the study of the history and practice of art historical writing focussing on its institutional and conceptual foundations, from the past to the
present day in all areas and all periods. Besides addressing the major innovators of the past it also encourages re-thinking ways in which the subject may be written in the future. It ignores the
disciplinary boundaries imposed by the Anglophone expression art history and allows and encourages the full range of enquiry that encompasses the visual arts in its broadest sense as well
as topics falling within archaeology, anthropology, ethnography and other specialist disciplines and approaches. It welcomes contributions from young and established scholars and is aimed at
building an expanded audience for what has hitherto been a much specialised topic of investigation. It complements the work of the Journal of Art Historiography.

Architecture and the Late

Ottoman Historical Imaginary
Reconfiguring the Architectural Past
in a Modernizing Empire
Ahmet A. Ersoy, Bogazii University, Turkey
Critical historiography at its best This refreshing account
of the art, architecture and culture of Tanzimat takes issue
with traditional frameworks of analysis and thrives on
attention to nuance, contingency, ambivalence, syncretism
and cultural reciprocity in explaining late Ottoman Empires
engagement with Europe ... A timely contribution to Ottoman/
Turkish studies as well as to broader theoretical debates on
orientalism, historicism, revivalism, authenticity, cultural
difference and identity formation in the modern world
Above all, a much-needed cosmopolitan perspective to
counteract the nationist neo-orientalism of political Islam in
Turkey today.
Sibel Bozdogan, Harvard University, USA
While European eclecticism is examined as a critical moment
in western art history, little research has been conducted
in the historicist pursuits of late Ottoman architects as
they negotiated the nineteenth centurys vast inventory of
styles and embarked on a revivalist/Orientalist program
they identified as the Ottoman Renaissance. Ersoys book
examines the complex historicist discourse underlying this
renaissance through a close reading of a text conceived
as the movements canonizing manifesto: the Usul-i
Mimari-i Osmani.

This is a fascinating account of the early history of

connoisseurship in France in which the role of the print
collector, Pierre-Jean Mariette, and his drawings were without
equal. Kristel Smenteks wonderfully rich and detailed
analysis brings Mariettes professional and private activities
of collecting to life by reconstructing the social networks of
trade, erudition and politeness that determined and sustained
them. Here, connoisseurship emerges not as a dry and arcane
epistemological practice, but as a set of intellectual and
physical performances by which works of art were attributed
and authenticated and also displayed and enjoyed. Mariette
and the Science of the Connoisseur in Eighteenth-Century
Europe is an outstanding contribution to the field.

Circulations in the Global

History of Art
Edited by Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Princeton
University, USA, Catherine Dossin, Purdue University,
USA and Batrice Joyeux-Prunel, cole normale
suprieure, France
Do globalisation studies in art history have a future? Thomas
DaCosta Kauffmann in his fine introductory essay on the
historiography of globalism proposes that the study of objects
on the move, of their circulation across cultures, is the way
forward. His essay is enhanced with the strength of multiple
voices in the accompanying essays. Their approach allows
art history to move forward, away from nationalism and away
from the limits of Western art historical questions. The book
is rich in new ideas and globalisation becomes a process
rather than an ideology. This process is defined in the essay
by Catherine Dossin and Beatrice Joyeux-Prunel on how a
geopolitical understanding may transform modernism and
lead us away from Paris and New York.
Jaynie Anderson, Australian Institute of Art History,
University of Melbourne, Australia

Celebrated connoisseur, drawings collector, print dealer, book

publisher and authority on the art of antiquity, Pierre-Jean
Mariette (16941774) was a pivotal figure in the eighteenthcentury European art world. Focusing on the trajectory of
Mariettes career, this book examines the material practices
and networks through which connoisseurs forged the idea of
art as an object of empirical and historical analysis. Drawing
on unpublished archival material as well as on histories of
science, publishing and collecting, this book shows how
Mariette and his colleagues interpretations of graphic arts
gave rise to new conceptions of artistic authorship.

Michael Baxandall, Vision

and the Work of Words
Edited by Peter Mack, University of Warwick, UK
and Robert Williams, University of California,
Santa Barbara, USA

Essays in this volume emphasize questions of transcultural

encounters and exchanges as circulations, and provide
an overview of current research on issues of circulation
in relation to global art history and the globalization of
art past and present. They offer a variety of approaches to
the treatment of different periods, regions, and objects,
surveying both questions of historiography and methodology
and presenting individual case studies.

The most important art historian of his generation is how

some scholars have described the late Michael Baxandall
(19332007). Baxandalls work had a transformative effect on
the study of European Renaissance and eighteenth-century
art, and contributed to a complex transition in the aims and
methods of art history in general during the 1970s, 80s,
and 90s. This collection endeavors to assess the nature
of Baxandalls achievement, and to address the challenges
it offers to the practice of art history today.

A Theory of the Tache in
Nineteenth-Century Painting

The Urban Department Store

in America, 18501930

ystein Sjstad, University of Oslo, Norway

Louisa Iarocci, University of Washington, USA

Without question, the tache (blot, patch, stain) is a central

and recurring motif in nineteenth-century modernist
painting. Manets and the Impressionists rejection of
academic finish produced a surface where the strokes of
paint were presented directly, as patches or blots, then
indirectly as legible signs. Czanne, Seurat, and Signac
painted exclusively with patches or dots. Through a series
of close readings, this book looks at the tache as one of the
most important features in nineteenth-century modernism.
The tache is a potential meeting point between text and
image and a pure trace of the artists body. Even though each
manifestation of tacheism generates its own specific cultural
effects, this book represents the first time a scholar has
looked at tacheism as a hidden continuum within modern art.

In the late nineteenth century, the urban department

store arose as a built artifact and as a social institution
in the United States. While the physical building type is
the foundation of this comprehensive architectural study,
Iarocci reaches beyond the analysis of the brick and mortar
to reconsider how the spaces of selling were culturallyproduced spaces, as well as the product of interrelated
economic, social, technological and aesthetic forces.

Public Space in European
Visual Culture, 17891914

This is a splendid collection of essays dealing with the topic

of excess in material and visual culture. Each contribution is
thought-provoking and, what is more, enjoyable to read. The
volume is cohesive yet far-reaching, effectively demonstrating
how the same subject of excess informs many different
discourses, places and times. Thus compelling connections
are made among such seemingly disparate topics as diamonds
in 17th- and 18th-century British portraits of British nabobs,
elaborate dollhouses collected in Holland, decorative objects
in Pre-Raphaelite paintings, convergences of exile, queerness
and nationalism in avant-garde Europe, and the provocative
excessive works of contemporary figures including artist
Damien Hirst and playwright Sky Gilbert, to name a few.
Heidi Brevik-Zender, University of California, Riverside, USA
Although the idea of excess has often been used to degrade,
many of the essays in this collection demonstrate how it
has also been used as a strategy for self-fashioning and
empowerment, particularly by women and queer subjects.
This volume examines a range of material including
ceramics, paintings, caricatures, interior design and
theatrical performances in various global contexts.
Each case study sheds new light on how excess has been
perceived and constructed, revealing how beliefs about
excess have changed over time.

and Feminist Collaboration

Charting the development of the studio practice of artist

Anthony McCall (b. 1946), this publication features facsimile
reproductions of pages from McCalls extensive archive
of notebooks, which are supported by production scores
and installation photographs. It was formed out of a
series of discussions that took place over the last decade
between McCall and the artists Graham Ellard and
Stephen Johnstone.

Rooted in the study of objects, this book addresses the role

of art and visual culture in discourses surrounding nuclear
science and technology, atomic power, and nuclear warfare
in Cold War Britain. Far from insular in its concerns, this
volume draws upon cross-cultural dialogues between British
and European artists and the relationship between Britain
and America to engage with an interdisciplinary art history
that will also prove useful to researchers in a variety of
fields including European history, politics, design history,
anthropology, and media.

Emphasizing the diversity of collage in the twentieth century,
Rona Crans book explores the role that it played in the work

to destabilize their work. Throughout, she shows that rigid
definitions of collage severely limit our understanding of
artists and writers who used it in non-traditional ways.

Edited by Polly Savage with essays by Robert Loder

and John Picton and a Foreword by Sir Anthony Caro

The Spanish Civil War (July 1936 to April 1939) was arguably
one of the most politically and socially significant conflicts
of the 20th century. Conscience and Conflict, accompanying
a ground-breaking exhibition at Pallant House Gallery,
Chichester and Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is
the first book to consider the fascinating and wide-ranging
responses of British artists to the war in Spain. It focuses
on work by British visual artists such as Edward Burra,
Wyndham Lewis, Henry Moore and John Armstrong,
examining them alongside international figures such
as Pablo Picasso and Joan Mir.

STUDIES IN ART HISTORIOGRAPHY

The Expressionist Turn is a ground-breaking anthology

and the first of its kind to consider the concept of an
expressionist art history. Providing both new, primary
translations and trenchant, secondary interpretive texts,
this book will change the way we approach the elusive
term Expressionism as a stylistic designation and a
historiographic category.

Jay A. Clarke, Manton Curator of

Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, The Clark

During the period in which Expressionist artists were active

in central Europe, art historians were producing texts which
were characterized as expressionist, yet the notion of
an expressionist art history has yet to be fully explored in
historiographic studies. This anthology offers a cross-section
of noteworthy art history texts written 19121933 that have
been described as expressionist, along with commentaries
by an international group of scholars. Together they offer a
productive lens through which to re-examine the practice
and theory of early twentieth-century art history.

This fully illustrated study of the life and work of Scottish
artist Craigie Aitchison (19262009) is the first book to
cover the entire oeuvre of a painter whose distinctive and
powerfully evocative style has earned him widespread critical
acclaim and public popularity. Award-winning writer Cate
Haste draws for the first time on original documents, family
archives, letters, published interviews with the painter, and
new interviews with those who knew Aitchison to explore
the relationship of his life to his work, the influences
which shaped his visual imagination, the emergence of his
distinctive themes, and the development of his painting style.

In this in-depth analysis, Peter Muir argues that Gordon

Matta-Clarks Conical Intersect (1975) is emblematic of Henri
Lefebvres understanding of arts function in relation to urban
space. By engaging with Lefebvres theory in conjunction
with the perspectives of other writers, such as Michel de
Certeau, Jacques Derrida, and George Bataille, the book
elicits a story that presents the artworks significance, origins

Italian artists group as a representative instance of the
tensions facing Italian painting during the transition out of
two decades of Fascism and into the global divisions of the

conformism vs. freedom have monopolized the discourse

This book introduces a new impetus to the discussion of

the relationship between touch and sculpture by setting up
a dialogue between art historians and individuals who are
working in disciplines beyond art history. The collection
brings together a diverse set of approaches, with essays
tackling subjects from prehistoric figurines to the work
of contemporary artists, from pre-modern ideas about the
physiology of touch to tactile interaction in the museum,
and from the phenomenology of touch in philosophy to
the findings of scientific study.

Visual Propaganda, Exhibitions, and the Spanish Civil War is a
history of art during wartime that analyzes images in various
media that circulated widely and were encountered daily
by Spaniards on city walls, in print, and in exhibitions. The
book draws on extensive archival research, brings to light

Video art emerged as an art form that from the 1960s and
onwards challenged the concept of art hence, art historical
practices. From the perspective of artists, critics, and
scholars engaged with this new medium, art was seen as
too limiting a notion. Video Art Historicized provides a novel,
insightful and also challenging re-interpretation of this field
by examining the discourse and its own premises. It takes
a firm conceptual approach to the material, examining the
conceptual, theoretical, and methodological implications
that are simultaneously contested by both artists and
authors, yet intertwined in both the legitimizing and the
historicizing processes of video as art.

STUDIES IN ART HISTORIOGRAPHY

Vladimir Markov and Russian Primitivism: A Charter for

the Avant-Garde is a stellar contribution to the literature on
primitivism and its complex relationship to the formation of
the European avant-garde. A combination of new translations
of Markovs seminal texts and critical assessments by Irena
Buinska, Jeremy Howard, and Z.S. Strother, this text expands
our understanding of how non-Western art traditions were
regarded in the early twentieth-century and, in the process,
underscores the myriad uses and perceptions of the
primitive in currency before the First World War. Markovs
texts offer to contemporary readers different and surprising
examples of European entanglements with primitivism. In
addition to further cementing the primacy of primitivism to the
formation of European modernism, the authors discussions
effectively position Markovs central position in these
important developments.
Steven Nelson, University of California, Los Angeles, USA
This volume introduces the Latvian artist and champion of
artistic change in early twentieth-century Russia, Voldemars

Haydens well-researched and insightful study explores

why video art has a complicated and uneven relation with
art history. For the first time, the politics of avoidances and
anxieties are investigated in both fields that have fuelled
misconception in the debates from the 1960s to the present.
The author not only reasons videos historical distinctiveness,
but argues for a contemporary perspective of mixing and
crossing boundaries between disciplines.

DESIGN RESEARCH IN ARCHITECTURE

Recently in many architectural schools efforts intensified to

further develop architectural research. Exciting new avenues
are being explored, relying upon the design skills of architects
and urban designers, combining them with intellectual rigor
and in-depth thinking, in order to imagine new spatialities
and to unfold hitherto unknown spatial experiences. This
series highlights the innovative results of these explorations,
opening up a new world of path-breaking research.
Hilde Heynen, University of Leuven, Belgium
During the last 30 years, technological, social, economic
and environmental changes have brought about the most
dramatic evolution to architectural practice that has taken
place since the profession emerged during the Italian
Renaissance. Whilst these changes have transformed the
way architects work, few contemporary books discuss
architectural practice. The Architecture Chronicle sets
out to define the role of the contemporary architect in the
light of these changes. It also engages with the design and
production process and investigates how design decisions
are being made and by whom they are executed.

Photography, Architecture and the

Modern City
Edited by Andrew Higgott, University of East London,
UK and Timothy Wray
The interrelationship between photographic practices,
architecture and the design process is of long standing, and
the literature in this area continues to bring new and exciting
modes of interpretation. Camera Constructs is a cleverly
conceived volume which makes an alert contribution through a
carefully articulated and keenly focused study which opens up
further debates in this fertile terrain. Expertly edited by Higgott
and Wray, Camera Constructs brings together the salient
themes associated with visualizing the city through the means
of photography and the lens of Modernism. This study will be
of real value both as an undergraduate text and to scholars
working in this fascinating interdisciplinary crossroads.
Alan Marcus, University of Aberdeen, UK
Camera Constructs reflects critically on the varied
interactions of the different practices by which
photographers, artists, architects, theorists and historians
engage with the relationship of the camera to architecture,
the city and the evolution of Modernism. Including twentythree essays by a wide range of historians and theorists
this book provides a rich and highly original analysis of the
relationship of photography to built form from the early
modern period to the present day.

Stephen Gamess new compendium of broadcast lecture
texts represents an invaluable enrichment of the increasingly
diverse literature on the life, career and ideas of Nikolaus
Pevsner one of the focal figures of mid-20th-century visual
culture in England. Not just that but, in conjunction with the
forthcoming companion volume, Pevsner at the BBC, it will
do much to illuminate the wider interconnections between
cultural commentators and the mass media in the era of
humanist social democracy that Noel Annan fondly dubbed
Our Age. Those, after all, were years when public discourse
on the built environment was still pervaded by high ideals and
grand narratives of Progress and social salvation in stark
contrast with the empty posturing that passes for architectural
theory in todays time of image-led, iconic nihilism!

This multi-disciplinary study of early archetypal Brahmanic,

the styles from northwest India were adapted as they
spread into Southeast Asia. It unravels the specifically
compositional and architectural linkages along the trading
routes of South and Southeast Asia, and the common
themes and influences to be seen in the early temples of
Java, Cambodia and Champa. Using digital reconstruction
and recovery of three-dimensional temple forms, the authors
have developed a digital dataset of early Indian antecedents,
tested new technologies for the acquisition of built heritage
and developed new methods for comparative analysis of built

important for what they reveal about changing tastes in the
treatment of the arts as a broadcast topic, as well as offering

Raw: Architectural
Engagements with Nature
Edited by Solveig Be, Hege Charlotte Faber and
Brit Strandhagen, all at NTNU Trondheim, Norwegian
University of Science and Technology
Nature inheres in many aesthetic forms of expression. In
architecture, however, nature emerges with a particular
power and clarity, which makes architecture a raw kind of
art. Thus, by using the concept of raw as a focal point, this
book provides new approaches to architecture in a broad
sense, as well as other aesthetic and artistic practices, and
will be of interest to readers from different fields of the arts
and humanities, spanning from philosophy and theology
to history of art, architecture and music.

Graffiti, Street Art and the Parergon

Rafael Schacter, University College London, UK
Based on an in-depth ethnographic study working with
some of the worlds most influential Independent Public
Artists, this book takes a completely new approach. Placing
these illicit aesthetic practices within a broader historical,
political, and aesthetic context, it argues that they are in
fact both intrinsically ornamental (working within a classic
architectonic framework), as well as innately ordered (within
a highly ritualized, performative structure). Rather than
disharmonic, destructive forms, rather than ones solely
working within the dynamics of the market, these insurgent
images are seen to reface rather than deface the city,
operating within a modality of contemporary civic ritual.

ASHGATE STUDIES IN ARCHITECTURE

Series Editor: Eamonn Canniffe, Manchester School of Architecture, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
The discipline of Architecture is undergoing subtle transformation as design awareness permeates our visually dominated culture. Technological change, the search for sustainability and
debates around the value of place and meaning of the architectural gesture are aspects which will affect the cities we inhabit. This series seeks to address such topics, both theoretically
and in practice, through the publication of high quality original research, written and visual.
Topics to be covered include the following:
Architectural history and theory and their relationship to the development of the discipline, building conservation, heritage and creative adaptation.
The formal and aesthetic values of architectural design, the diversity of its expression of identity, and its representation in other media.
The impact of technological innovation on the materialisation of architecture and the questions surrounding environmental sustainability, experimentation and visionary design
The social and psychological context of architectural production, its relationship to occupants, clients and to other creative and professional disciplines, and the political situation in
which it is commissioned.
Proposals will be welcomed which explore or connect aspects of these themes. Subjects which deal with individual architects, with specific buildings or building types, and the critical
interpretation of historical and contemporary architecture from a theoretical or philosophical perspective are particularly encouraged. Architectures embodiment of technical, social, and
aesthetic aspects will also be emphasised.

The Architectural Capriccio

The Architecture of Industry

Memory, Fantasy and Invention

Changing Paradigms in Industrial

Building and Planning

Edited by Lucien Steil, University of Notre Dame,

School of Architecture, USA and Rome
Bringing together leading writers and practicing architects
including Jean Dethier, David Mayernik, Massimo Scolari,
Robert Adam, David Watkin and Leon Krier, this volume
provides a kaleidoscopic, multilayered exploration of the
Architectural Capriccio. It not only explains the phenomena
within a historical context, but moreover, demonstrates its
contemporary validity and appropriateness as a holistic
design methodology, an inspiring pictorial strategy, an
efficient rendering technique and an optimal didactic tool.
The book shows and comments on a wide range of historic
masterworks and highlights contemporary artists and
architects excelling in a modern updated, refreshed and
original tradition of the Capriccio.

This book argues that design drawings should be recognised

as intermediaries, mediating between the world of ideas and
the world of things, spanning the intangible and tangible.
The book argues that this in-between quality to architectural
drawing is essential and that it is critical to perceive
drawings as subtle bodies that hold physical attributes (e.g.
form, proportion, colour), highly evocative, yet with no matter.
Focusing on Islamic geometric architectural drawings, both
historical and contemporary, it draws on key philosophical
and conceptual notions of imagination from the Islamic
tradition as these relate to the creative act. It also adds to
debates on philosophies of the imagination, linking both
Western and Islamic traditions.

Charles Robert Cockerell,

Architect in Time
Reflections around Anachronistic Drawings
Anne Bordeleau, University of Waterloo, Canada
Focusing on how an important nineteenth-century architect
addressed the already shifting relation between architecture,
time and history, this book offers insights on issues still
relevant today-the struggle between imitation and innovation,
the definition (or rejection) of aesthetic experience, the
grounds of architectural judgment (who decides and how), or
fundamentally, how to act (i.e. build) when there is no longer
a single grand narrative but a plurality of possible histories.
Six drawings provide the foundation of an itinerary through
Charles Robert Cockerells conception of architecture, and
into the depths of drawings and buildings.

Redefining the Sketchbook
Edited by Angela Bartram and Douglas Gittens, both
at University of Lincoln, UK and Nader El-Bizri, the
American University of Beirut, Lebanon
This volume explores the place of the sketchbook in
contemporary art and architecture. Drawing upon a diverse
range of theories, practices, and reflections common to the
contemporary conceptualisation of the sketchbook and its
associated environments, it offers a dialogue in which the
sketchbook can be understood as a pivotal working tool
that contributes to the creative process and the formulation
and production of visual ideas. Along with exploring the
theoretical, philosophical, psychological, and curatorial
implications of the sketchbook, the book addresses emergent
digital practices by way of examining contemporary
developments in sketchbook productions and pedagogical

The Art Collectors Handbook: A Guide to Collection

Management and Care is positioned to become the
authoritative source on the management and care of art
collections. [...] Perhaps this books greatest strength is its
appeal to a wide audience; art historians and private collectors
alike will find it both useful and approachable. The Art
Collectors Handbook: A Guide to Collection Management

their materials on managing and caring for art collections.
Art Libraries Society of North America
With the rapid and unprecedented global expansion of the
art market, new collectors are emerging every day. When
buying art, whether for pure enjoyment, for investment or
some other motive, few art collectors consider the practical
and financial implications of owning and maintaining art,
and many do not have a plan for how they might eventually
dispose of it. This book, probing a number of resources and
incorporating advice from top experts in the field, offers
guidance on collection management and care, and serves
as an important reference guide for collectors and those
charged with managing collections.

Cultural Networks in
Migrating Heritage

Museum Representations
of Maoist China

Intersecting Theories and Practices

across Europe

From Cultural Revolution to Commie Kitsch

Amy Jane Barnes, University of Leicester, UK

Perla Innocenti, University of Glasgow, UK

Europe since the last millennium has been buzzing with
attempts to network heritage, especially in the service
of creating a more united Europe. Perla Innocenti does a
valuable service for those working in this field in reporting on
a wide range of case-studies, highlighting the multiple forms
that such networking can take, as well as the challenges that
networking projects face, and the potential that they hold
for contributing to more cultural connection in Europe
in the future.
Sharon Macdonald, University of York, UK

The collection, interpretation and display of art from the

Peoples Republic of China, and particularly the art of the
Cultural Revolution, have been problematic for museums.
These objects challenge our perception of Chineseness
and their style, content and the means of their production
question accepted notions of how we perceive art. This book
links art history, museology and visual culture studies to
examine how museums have attempted to reveal, discuss
and resolve some of these issues. This book will be of
interest to scholars and students in museology, visual
and cultural studies as well as scholars of Chinese and
revolutionary art.

The book will be of interest to scholars and students in

museum and cultural heritage studies, visual studies,
sociology of organizations, cultural heritage management
and information studies. It will also be relevant to
practitioners and policymakers from museums,
libraries, NGOs and cultural institutions at large.

Any cultural institution thinking of turning to

crowdsourcing should pause and read this book first.
Combining comprehensive case studies with subtle and
well-informed reflection on what it means to invite
contributions from a crowd, it is the first volume to seriously
address a growing part of museum and archive practice.

Chris Lintott, Principal Investigator, Galaxy Zoo

and Zooniverse.org and Trustee of the
National Maritime Museum, UK

Crowdsourcing, or asking the general public to help

contribute to shared goals, is increasingly popular in
memory institutions as a tool for digitising or computing vast
amounts of data. This book brings together for the first time
the collected wisdom of international leaders in the theory
and practice of crowdsourcing in cultural heritage. It features
eight accessible case studies of groundbreaking projects
from leading cultural heritage and academic institutions,
and four thought-provoking essays that reflect on the wider
implications of this engagement for participants and on the
institutions themselves.
This book will be essential reading for information
and cultural management professionals, students and
researchers in universities, corporate, public or academic
libraries, museums and archives.

DIGITAL RESEARCH IN THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES

Katie Hill, Sothebys Institute of Art and OCCA, Office of

Contemporary Chinese Art, Oxford, UK

This book highlights the strengths and benefits from new

cultural networking practices but also the challenges and
issues that arise, how these could be addressed and what
lessons can be learnt. It also sets out to answer the questions
how. How can we leverage the power of cross-border
cultural networks in a contested place such as Europe
today? How can European cultural institutions elaborate the
necessary approaches and strategies to achieve a type of
cultural cooperation that is truly based on cultural practice?
How can the actions of the European Commission and
relevant cultural bodies in Europe be strengthened, adapted
or extended to meet these goals?

Cultural Heritage

This book brings together significant first-hand research

that highlights a specific and unique period of collecting along
with a highly significant political moment of history in China.
It brings out debates about collecting practices, curatorship
and British China hands in an intelligent, thoughtful way
which is highly readable. It is a fascinating insight into a very
specific relationship that links to broader issues of exhibiting,
knowledge production and China-West relations and the
politics and power structures of cultural institutions.

Museums and Restitution

New Practices, New Approaches
Edited by Louise Tythacott, School of Oriental
and African Studies, University of London, UK and
Kostas Arvanitis, University of Manchester, UK
This book is essential reading for anyone interested in
restitution. Its essays bring together global case studies and
thematic overviews, exploring the wide range of activities,
outcomes, thought and policy involved in restitution, including
disputed cases; ethics and issues of power; and the potentially
positive effects of restitution on museums as well as the real
challenges it poses to museums.
Laura Peers, University of Oxford, UK
This book examines contemporary approaches to restitution
from the perspective of museums. It focuses on the ways in
which these institutions have been addressing the subject
at a regional, national and international level. In particular,
it explores contemporary practices and recent claims, and
investigates to what extent the question of restitution as
an issue of ownership is still at large, or whether museums
have found additional ways to conceptualise and practice
restitution, by thinking beyond the issue of ownership. The
challenges, benefits and drawbacks of recent and current
museum practice are explored.

Museums in the New
Mediascape

New Collecting: Exhibiting and

Uncertain Images: Museums

and the Work of Photographs

Transmedia, Participation, Ethics

Edited by Beryl Graham, University of Sunderland, UK

Edited by Elizabeth Edwards, De Montfort University,

UK and Sigrid Lien, University of Bergen, Norway

Jenny Kidd, Cardiff University, UK

Bolstering her arguments by robust and refined empirical
analyses, Kidd brings the notion of museums as media into
the 21st century.
Kirsten Drotner, University of Southern Denmark
The museum today faces complex questions of definition,
representation, ethics, aspiration and economic survival.
Alongside this we see burgeoning use of an array of
new media including increasingly dynamic web portals
and content, digital archives, social networks, blogs and
online games. At the heart of this are changes to the
idea of visitor and audience and their participation and
representation in the new cultural sphere. This insightful
book unpacks a number of contradictions that help to
frame and articulate digital media work in the museum and
questions what constitutes authentic participation. Based
on original empirical research and a range of case studies
the author explores questions about the museum as media
from a number of different disciplines and shows that
across museums and the study of them, the cultural
logic is changing.

and collector, but there is very little published analytical
material available to help meet those challenges. This book
fills that gap. Drawing from the editors extensive research
and the authors expertise in the field, the book provides
clear navigation through a disparate arena. The authors offer

We have been needing a book like this for a long time.

Looking at what photographs do, and could do, in museums,
it beautifully fills a gap that has for too long stayed open in
the literature on museums, museum practice, representation
and photographs. On these pages we see photographs
as acts of remembrance, as haunting, as absent, as
representational forms and as much more besides. And
throughout, this essential new volume not only explores
the work of photographs in museums, but also makes a
significant contribution to far wider debates on the processes
of representation.
Sandra Dudley, University of Leicester, UK
This book brings into focus the ubiquitous yet entirely
unconsidered work that photographs are put to in museums.
The authors argument is that there is an economy of
photographs in museums which is integral to the processes
of the museum, and integral to the understanding of
museums. The international contributors, drawn from
curators and academics, reflect a range of visual and
museological expertise.
The volume emerges from PhotoCLEC, a HERA funded
project on museums and the photographic legacy of the
colonial past in a postcolonial and multicultural Europe.

Hannah Paddon

Peoples, Places and Identities

Edited by Christopher Whitehead, Katherine Lloyd,
Susannah Eckersley and Rhiannon Mason, all at
Newcastle University, UK
Migration has emerged as one of the most productive areas
for museum studies in recent years. This is not only because
of the increase in numbers of museums about migration but
also because these have the potential to raise far-reaching
questions about the role of museums in contemporary society.
Through its wide range of case studies from Europe, this
volume makes a significant contribution to highlighting the
diversity of cases and of approaches taken, as well as to how
we might analyse such museums.
Sharon Macdonald, University of York, UK
The imperatives surrounding museum representations of
place have shifted from the late eighteenth century to today.
The political significance of place itself has changed and
continues to change at all scales, from local, civic, regional
to national and supranational. At the same time, changes
in population flows, migration patterns and demographic
movement now underscore both cultural and political
practice, be it in the accommodation of diversity in
cultural and social policy, scholarly explorations of
hybridity or in state immigration controls.
This book investigates the historical and contemporary
relationships between museums, places and identities.
It brings together contributions from international
scholars, academics, practitioners from museums
and public institutions, policymakers, and representatives
of associations and migrant communities to explore all
these issues.

This is not a how-to guide; more importantly it provides a

much-needed analysis and trenchant reflection on redisplay
in UK museums that has been enabled by Heritage Lottery
funding. Keen insights, carefully made comparisons of
museum processes, and the combination of theory and
practice makes Redisplaying Museum Collections an
important addition to the museological literature that
will be welcomed by academics and practitioners alike.
Peter Davis, Newcastle University, UK
This is the first book to examine, in depth, the multi-million
pound redisplay and reinterpretation process in British
museums in the early twenty-first century. Acknowledging
the importance of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) as project
catalyst, Hannah Paddon explains and explores the complex
process, from the initial stages of project conceptualisation
to the final stages of museum re-opening and exhibition
evaluation. She also provides an in-depth look, using three
case study museums, at the factors which shape each
museum redisplay project including topics such as museum
architecture, government agendas and the exhibition team.
Finally, the book offers discussions and conclusions around
pitfalls and successes and thoughts about the future of
collection redisplay.
