Music room rules and behavior plan

BE RESPECTFUL
1. Listen. One person talks at a time.
2. Raise your hand.
3. Enter and exit the music room quietly.
4. Use only nice words toward each other.
5. Respect each other and the teacher.
6. Treat the instruments and books with respect.

BE RESPONSIBLE
1. Follow directions.
2. Turn in assignments to the turn-in bin.

BE READY
1. Enter the music room quietly, sitting in your assigned
seat with your legs crossed.
2. Come into class excited to learn and make music.
3. Everyone should try their best at every activity.

BE SAFE
1. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
2. Don’t run in the music room.

*In music class, I will strive to achieve a creative and

enthusiastic atmosphere in which students feel engaged in
lessons and supported during performance opportunities.

*K-2 students should sit quietly in assigned seats in a

rectangle on the mat after entering the room. Level One and
Two voices are acceptable when they do not interfere with
the lesson or prevent participation.

*3-5 students should sit quietly in their assigned seats in

color-coded rows. Level One and Two voices are acceptable
when they do not interfere with the lesson or prevent
participation.
*In order to keep order in the music room, I use a three
strike system.
* Strike 1- verbal warning
* Strike 2- timeout in the corner and loss of privileges (ie. If
the class is playing instruments during the timeout, the
student in timeout misses his/her turn.)
* Strike 3- letter/call home and a referral (possibly a timeout
in gym/office or loss of recess)

*If students are not following the music room rules, they are
removed from their normal seat and sit near the wall by the
staircase, away from their peers. At this point, they may
continue to participate, if possible, from that location.

*If needed, he/she will fill out my respect homework sheet.

*If the student cannot handle being around peers, he/she will
be removed from the classroom to sit in the office or an
alternate location such as the gym.

*Throughout the school year, progress reports are sent home

to various students. Not all music students receive progress
reports.

*If a student’s behavior causes a consistent problem, then a

“music class concerns sheet” will be sent home with the
student, documenting the areas of concern (and success).

*In the case of students with consistent difficulties with

behavior in my room, I also may discuss loss of recess with
the classroom teacher and the student.

*If behavior makes it necessary, I will make phone calls

home. Hopefully there will be opportunities to make positive
follow-up calls as well.
