For power on a Taurus digitizer or to wake up a digitizer in sleeping mode, push briefly the
central button.
You have to wait 5 minutes before the screen wakes up.
Moving in the menu is done by left and right buttons, validation by the central button.
You can also access to the digitizer by ethernet cable (blue cable with the digitizer). You
have to enter the Taurus IP address 192.168.1.2 (for all the digitizers) in a web navigator.
(Mozilla-Firefox recommended).
In buffered mode you need to have the screen powered to be able to dialog with the
Taurus.

I) PC Configuration to discuss with Taurus

1) Windows
-

Menu START / Connections / look at all connections

Connection to the local network / properties
Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) / properties
Use this IP address : 192.168.1.5 (sub network mask : 255.255.255.0)
Validate

2) Linux
- Open aterminal
changethe IP address of your computer: sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.5Your
password will be asked to execute the command.
NB: by sudo, you become a "superuser" time to launch the command. Only this super
user has rights to change the IP address on linux.
- Check if the computer address is well changed : ifconfig
- Check if the connection with The Taurus is well done: ping 192.168.1.2
NB: In case your computer (linux) stops everytime the link with the Taurus by
changing computer IP address, you have to stop the "network manager" with this
command:
su -c 'service NetworkManager stop'

II) Check of Taurus functioning

1) Status page
The digitizer status page sums up the main information:
-

Count of recording days remaining.

Compact flash card size used (store data)
Battery voltage
Sampling
Status

If status is green, everything is allright.

If status is red, you have to click on the status link, and then click on the NOK link.
It shows you the trouble.
NB: If the Ethernet link is not used, le link Link will be in red, which is normal.

2) Signal check
Menu: waveform.

3) Check of store data available (EXT 3 card)

Menu: data availability.

If there are some interruptions, you can download the SOH data on the archive card (FAT
32), to check if there were GPS, satellite receiving problems. (see $ 7)

4) GPS check
Menu: Timing.

The important thing is to check the "PLL state status. The signals are well received when
PLL state indicates "Fine Lock".

5) Sensor check
Menu: Sensor.

If the CMG-3, or STS-2 masses are not

anymore inside the green edges, you have
to recentre them using the BBOX.

with PQL, MATLAB
You can choose data format mseed, SAC, what you use to work.

Collect SOH data, so you can verify the GPS by number of satellites used.

III) Data collecting

For collecting data, you have to shutdown the Taurus, take away the archive card (on the
left), and check continuity of these data.
If there is no gap, change only the archive card.
If there are gap, change the archive card + the store card.
Connect the card in the media reader and copy data directly in the computer.

1) Flashcards saving

Page 10 / 18

TAURUS Field Control

(version 366-3)

Once the station is shut down, open the media door under the digitizer, check the warning
light is green, before collecting cards.

2) Miniseed data saving

The new versions of Taurus (v 3.4.6 and more) record directly the data in miniseed format.
When you pick up data in the field, you can now collect only the card containing miniseed
data. You have to be careful however there is no hole in the data by scanning the directory
with the msi software. (see $ IV)
Indeed, holes in miniseed data are not necessarily corresponding with hole in store data.
If hole are identified, its better to collect recorded store data on the 2nd flash card. These
missing data can be regenerated by convert the store data using ApolloProject software (see
"using of Apollo Project for transform data").

IV) Check of miniseed data continuity

By using msi software, you can scan a directory containing miniseed data and list gap or
overlap.

1) Software installation
Msi can be working on:
- Mac OS
- Linux

Sandrine Roussel, Coralie Aubert, Glenn Cougoulat, translation P. Bascou(ISTerre)

Page 11 / 18

(version 366-3)

You can download the software msi, developped by IRIS here:

https://seiscode.iris.washington.edu/projects/msi/files

For installing msi software, you only need to uncompress and unarchive the file:
tarxvzf msi-3.4.3.tar.gz

Copy the executable in the /usr/local/bin directory so you can execute it from any directory.

2) Using
1- Download the miniseed data in the computer.
The miniseed data are sort by month in directories.
Example: 201210 (month 10/2012 data)
2- Execute the following command:
msi -t -G ./201210/*.miniseed

This command will scan all the miniseed files of

the 201210 directory.

3- Command results
The command result shows on screen:
- Numberof segments of data by channel
- Number of gap

Page 12 / 18

3) Some examples
Example 1: scan of all data for the station CT17 (msi -t -G */*)

Number of
segments

Number of
gap
Gap in
seconds
In this previous example, there is no gap on data.
6 segments have been listed (2 by ways)
3 gaps have been listed (1 hole by way)

Normal result because :

- Day 185: installation of the station
- Day 251: first round for picking up data
- Day 327: 2nd data round
So there is only 1 gap by way into the data the day 251, due to the data collect (station
shutdown).

Sandrine Roussel, Coralie Aubert, Glenn Cougoulat, translation P. Bascou(ISTerre)

Page 13 / 18

TAURUS Field Control

(version 366-3)

2014

Example 2:

Is the previous example, some gaps have been detected.

16 segments have been listed

13 gaps have been listed

- Day 186: installation of the station

- Day 256: first round for picking up data
- Day 324: 2nd data round
There are gpas inside data, in particular:
- day 306 -> 1.22s (ways E, N et Z)
- day 318 ->3071s (ways E, N et Z)
- day 318 -> 2.64s (ways E, N et Z)
Remark: you need to know the station history for a good using of the msi command (date of
installation, dates of last rounds...).

You have now checked the miniseed data:

a) There is no gap, change only the archive card (FAT 32), replace it at the left of the
Taurus.
Dont forget to erase the store data.
Select the menu "store tools" then "delete store" then "destroy and recreate".
b) There are gap, change the archive card (FAT 32) + store card (EXT 3)
Handle with care the adapter, its very fragile

Attention to the format card !

If the digitizer doesnt recognized the store card, ( No Data Available at the signal location on
the welcome page), shut down one more time the station, only insert the ext3 card in its left
side, go in the store tools menu, clean and recreate the store, and then power on the
digitizer. See down.

Once the store card is recognized by the digitizer (signals can be seen on the status page),
replace flash cards at their respective location (miniseed at left, store at right in the adapter)
after the Taurus had been powered down.
Check on the main screen that everything is OK before leaving the site.

V) Compact Flash cards formatting

2 types of Compact Flash cards are found in the Taurus. These flash cards are located under
the digitizer media door.

1) Card for store recording

This card is located at the right on an adapter. Its format is ext3.
Formatting it has to be done only under linux (under windows, its format is not
recognized)
Formatting process:
-

Open a terminal
Introduce the Compact Flash card in the media reader
Plug the media reader to the computer
mount
to know the external device name (often /dev/sdb1)
umountexternal_device_name
mke2fs j I 128 external_device_name

Formatting card can be also done using the TAURUS menu "store tools" then "delete store"
then "destroy and recreate".

2) Card for miniseed data recording

This card is located at the left side. Its format is FAT32.
Formatting it can be done under windows or under linux.
Formatting procedure under windows:
-

Introduce the Compact Flash card in the media reader

Plug the media reader to the computer
START / work desk
Select the corresponding removable disk and right click
Formatting
Umount the removable disk before plugging it out.
