RECTORS REFLECTIONS
It was the morning of August 24, 1793 when the melody of a tolling
bell drew members of Duanesburg to the center of town to await
the arrival of Judge James Duane, General William North, The
Right Reverend Samuel Provost, and other dignitaries to the
recently completed church building. Shortly after their arrival,
Judge Duane read a document in which he requested the Bishop
of New York to consecrate and set apart Christs church for the
public worship of Almighty God. Upon reading the document,
the judge handed it to the Bishop and, as over 300 friends and
neighbors crowded into the building, the Duane family took their
place behind a curtain. By way of explanation, he explained to
General Popham, I feel that the congregation should pay full
attention to the services and not be distracted by anyone who
may be sitting in this pew.

News & Notes

This year the community of Duanesburg celebrates the 250th

anniversary of its founding. As part of that celebration, we will also
commemorate the consecration of our parish. On August 23rd at 10:00 AM we will worship using
the first American Book of Common Prayer, which was adopted by General Convention four years
earlier. As much as possible, we will follow the customs and norms of the time. This means that our
music will consist of metrical psalms, the altar will be replaced by the original communion table,
and our worship will consist of Morning Prayer and Litany. Originally, it would have included the first
part of the communion service as well, but we will omit that, as well as a lengthy sermon in order to
keep our worship closer to our customary hour. While we offer worship every Sunday, in the late
eighteenth century it is likely that church services would have been help only once a month.
Without television or other forms of entertainment we take for granted today, church services were
highlights in the life of most American communities at the end of the eighteenth century.
Our existing organ was not installed until the middle of the 1800s. Still, we will go ahead and use it
on August 23; but to capture of sense of the antiquity of the church, we will rely on volunteers to

manually pump the bellows for our music. We were forced to do this a few years ago when we lost
power on a Sunday morning, and the music worked quite well with various people taking turns at
the bellows. If you would like to volunteer for this, please let me know.
Because of the special nature of this service, this might be a good Sunday to invite a friend to
come and join us for worship as we celebrate our great heritage as a community and as a church.

So What is in Your First Aid Kit?

hen my nephew and godchildren were toddlers we used to rent a pontoon boat and spend
the day on Sacandaga Lake. There were 3 sets of parents and me plus the 3 little ones. So
who do you think always packed the first aid kit? Yours truly! Being a former Girl Scout
(although one of the other mothers was also in my troop) I was trained well to be prepared! This also
carried over into my running life as if there was something you might possibly need at a race I usually
had it. One year at the Boiler Maker (a 15k race in Utica) a total stranger walked up to me and said
You look like a woman who has everything she could need for a race. My friends just chuckled. He
continued, I have a team of runners but none of them brought Vaseline. Would you have any? Just so
happens I did! I also keep a small first aid kit in my office in a box for when I coordinate day-of-race
registration for running events and believe me it has come in handy. The contents helped me patch up
a refreshment volunteer until I could get her to the hospital for stitches.
So I think you get my point and below is a list of items you might want to think about packing in a first
aid kit for those family picnics, boat rides, hikes and vacations. This list is only a guide as every person
and family is unique. And I hope you never need it but it cannot hurt to be prepared!

Adhesive bandages (various sizes) * Liquid

bandages
Antibiotic ointment and/or antiseptic wipes or
spray
Sterile gauze (in rolls and pads)
Medical Tape * Cold compress (have instant
ones available, and also keep reusable ones in
the freezer)
Hydrocortisone ointment
Calamine lotion
Rubbing alcohol
Hydrogen peroxide
Hand sanitizing gel * Eye wash solution (with
eye cup)
Sterile saline solution
Sunscreen (at least SPF 15)
Sunburn relief ointment
Cotton balls
Cotton swabs * Disposable medical gloves
Ace bandages * Thermometer
Bulb syringe
Medical dosage spoons
Blunt tip scissors (for cutting gauze and
medical tape)
Tweezers

Vices & Virtues
In a book I once read, an old gal is regarded, by
some people, as a practicing witch. Actually, the
only thing she pracrtices is Homopathy. She
believes righfully, that When men and women
are prideful or mean, hateful or self-centered or
greedy, they get sick. Trouble comes when we
separate ourselves from what the good Lord
wants us to do.
One does not have to practice any kind of
medicine to know these facts are true. Whenever
we get caught up in pride and greed as well as
other vices, they do separate us from God. We
cannot be self-centered and still hear or
understand the will of God.
Sometimes we tend to wallow in selfrighteousness, to assert our own actions, or in
some cases, non-action. We must realize that
when we separate ourselves from the will of God,
we suffer in mind, body and spirit.
As Christians, we must always pray daily in Jesus
Christs name for forgiveness of our sins, of our

vices, and of our transgressions. We may also seek

further forgiveness in receiving the body and
blood of Christ in The Holy Eucharist.
We must pray to be granted the virtues of
patience, humility, purity, temperance, diligence,
generousity, forgiveness, and love.
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through
the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
According as his divine power hath given unto us
all things that pertain unto life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him that hath called us
to glory and virtue. llPeter 1:2-3 KJV

Father, The Son and The
Holy Spirit.

ANGEL comes from the Greek word Angelos
(Messenger)
ANGEL appears in the Bible over 300 times.
ANGELS mentioned are Seraphim,
Thrones, Dominions, Virtues,

Cherubim

Powers, Principalities and Archangels. Some

Angels mentioned by name are Raphael, Michael
and Gabriel. (Then there is the fallen Angel, Satan,
who was cast into Hades.)
ANGELS have always been an important part of
Gods plans. At the beginning, an Angel guarded
the Garden of Eden. Angels have appeared,
sometimes in dreams, many, many times, to
announce Gods will throughout the Old
Testament as well as the New Testament. An Angel

appeared to the Virgin Mary; and the Heavenly

Hosts of Angels announced the birth of Jesus; and
an Angel appeared at the end of Jesus earthly
life, at the tomb and announcing His resurrection.
Angels, created by God, have helped solve
mankinds problems in the past and are still with us
today, ageless with time, just as God is always with
us.
May God the Father, God the Son Jesus Christ and
God the Holy Spirit be with you always, and may
your Guardian Angel always watch over you.
You are all always in my daily prayers.

GRAND FOYER

AUGUST 22ND
The Grand Foyer, marking the end of the Foyers, will be
held Saturday, August 22nd at 6 pm at the home of Steve
and Sherry Schrade, 1619 Eaton Corners Road. Even if you
did not participate in Foyers, please attend this event and
feel free to invite guests. We only ask that you bring a dish
to share. There will be a signup sheet in the church in the
weeks before the event so that we know how many to plan
for and what food people are bringing to the Foyer.

DUANESBURG 250

UPCOMING EVENTS
Duanesburg 250 has many events planned for the Fall to
commemorate the founding of the Town of Duanesburg
250 years ago.
On August 23rd, Christ Church will celebrate a Sunday

service typical of an Episcopal church service in the 18th

century. As we move closer to that date, we will be asking
parishioners to assist with the reception following this
service, as we hope to have a number of guests in
attendance that Sunday.
On September 19th, the Duanesburg Historical Society is
sponsoring a drive-about, with nearly 30 historical sites
featured, including our church. Volunteers are scheduled
to give brief presentations at each location throughout the
afternoon.
The big, day long celebration will be on September 26th at
the Duanesburg High School, where there will be
Homecoming events for the school, as well as a craft fair,
farmers market, chicken barbeque, Blessing of the Animals,
conducted by our own Deacon Debbie, sports games,
sports clinics, and a program involving both State and
Town elected officials. It is shaping up to be a great event
to celebrate this anniversary.

Christ Church is a worshiping community of friends, joyfully serving,

encouraging and healing others in Jesuss name.
