General Management

Viraj Shah
Profile: Tata Administrative Services (TAS)
Place: Delhi
Project: Tata Chemical: supply chain management
1. Pilot model for continuous replenishment of Tata Salt for stockiest in Delhi, 2
model cities
2. Pilot model for direct to retailer for selected stockiest in Delhi, 4 model cities
Project Deliverables:
Initially Viraj was working with Tata chemicals on the project to provide
recommendation for improvement in supply chain of Tata salt. The problem
associated with the project was disorientation in supply chain and because of that
there was built up of lot of inventory. The inventory resulted into the increment in
cost of supplied goods. This eventually led to decrement in the profit margin of the
company. The project assigned to Viraj was changed in the midway. Now he was
allotted a project for modeling of logistics for Tata pulses and other commodities. He
did a lot of ground work. He interacted with nearly 400 retailers and around 50-70
sales personnel.
Positive Experience:
The thing that Viraj liked about Tata chemicals was the scope of learning. The
projects involved pushing oneself one step further and learning in your own. He was
mentored and guided by seniors. All the seniors were really helpful and provided
insight about the company from ground zero. It was a great learning opportunity.
Negative Experience: Although the program was designed in a strategic manner,
there are levels of bureaucracy. Every approval or any query use to take more time
than it should have. Apart from that, most of the effort were put by Viraj and he
himself had to inform his mentor about the work progress. The reviewer met only
twice. There should have been more interaction as suggested by Viraj himself.
Rating:
Internship Experience= 5/5
Tata= 4/5
Tata Chemicals= 3.5/5
The reason for 3.5 star rating to Tata Chemicals is because of bureaucracy in the
organization.

Negative Experience:
Generally, there was no negative experience as per the internee.
Rating: 4/5
The main reason for such a high rating is already discussed in the positive
experience. Apart from that the reason for only 4 star not 5 is the issues related
to accommodation. Though, the internee was a Delhite and used to commute
but other internees who were from outside Delhi had to suffer in the starting to
finalize an accommodation.

Project: To analyze and provide solution to the procurement of the client.
Project Deliverables:
The project was related to provide solution to the procurement process for a firm
based in Kolkata.
Positive Experience:
First of all the internee was treated as Senior Associate. All the task given to him
was in some way related to the profile of senior associate. He was given chance
to work with top level management people from clientele. The colleagues were
really helpful throughout the internship. He was provided accommodation in a
five star hotel and there was a pick and drop service. The internee used to stay
in Kolkata for weekdays and fly back and report to Delhi on Friday. The working
hours were around 12-14 hours on an average.

Harsh Kumar Singh

320
Negative Experience:
There was only one ambiguity that too in job specification. There was no clear
cut guidelines regarding the roles of the internee. He was interacting with senior
associate as well as with the partner. Senior associate was pushing the internee
to do the work that the partner was reluctant to allow. This created a situation of
ambiguity.
Rating: 4
The reason for only 4 star has been already mentioned in the negative
experience.
