Abstract: Playing or performing a song are both part of this songs creation.
Interacting with text and music, execution or performance make up the aesthetic and semiotic triangle that gives a song its meaning and artistic effect. By
means of phonographic reproduction, the vocal-performing dimension has come
to permanently integrate the song, turning into an indispensable tool to its
analysis. The possibility of sensorial access to works of the past and to different performances of the same work has opened new ways and new patterns to
both the creation of, and the research on, popular songs, emphasizing the importance of performance in the building of aesthetic meaning and reframing notions such as authorship and tradition as well as historiographical and critical
procedures in this field.
Key words: popular song: history and criticism, vocal performance, phonographic reproduction
