Justin Boswick, a 17-year-old
rising senior at Shawnee High
School, uses filmmaking as his
medium to make positive change.
Boswicks
grandmother,
Dorothy Landis, suffers from
Alzheimers disease, a form of dementia that causes problems with
memory and concentration.
When I was younger, my mom
sat me down and talked to me
about moving my grandmother to
a nursing home, Boswick said.
My grandmother was a woman
who traveled around the world,
raised seven children, was a social worker and now cannot remember any of these experiences.
According to Alzheimers Disease International, one in nine
Americans over the age of 65
have Alzheimers disease, and

The deadline to run for school
board this November is quickly
approaching.
Residents interested in running for school board must file
with the Burlington County

Clerks Office by Monday, July 27

to have their name on the ballot
in Novembers election. All petitions must be filed with Burlington County Clerk Timothy Tyler
on or before 4 p.m. on July 27. The
office is located at 49 Rancocas
Road, Room 104 in Mt. Holly and
is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Requirements for board membership include:
Must be a United States citizen
Must be at least 18 years old
Must be able to read and write
Must be a resident of the municipality running in for at least
one year
Must not be holding any other
elected office or another office in
the local municipality and county

Have no claim, interest in or

contract with the board of education
Must not be disqualified for
conviction of crimes
Each candidate must complete
a nomination petition including
the signatures of at least 10 registered voters living in the district.

District wins U Got Brains competition for fourth time with its Heads Up, Eyes Forward campaign

The Lenape Regional High

School District has built a dynasty when it comes to teaching
the community about safe driving.
For the third consecutive year
and the fourth time in five years,
the school district was one of

three grand prize winners in the

U Got Brains Champion Schools
Competition. In the competition,
schools from across New Jersey
create campaigns to promote safe
driving. The team was honored
for its achievements at last
Wednesdays LRHSD board of education meeting.
Lenape District Television students participate in the contest
annually. Every year, the team is
challenged to create a video of 10
minutes or less showing how it
promoted safe driving in their
school and local communities.
John Donaldson, director of
television services for the school
district, said the challenging part
of winning three years in a row is
coming up with new ideas to stay
ahead of the competition. There
were 59 teams participating in
this years competition, and Donaldson said other schools emulate

or take ideas from what Lenape

has done in the past.
We know theyre gunning for
us, he said. So every year we
put a little more effort in it.
When it began competing in
the competition, LDTV created
the Heads Up, Eyes Forward
campaign. The campaign warns
motorists against the various
dangers of distracted driving.
Last school year, the team created t-shirts to distribute to students and staff. The front of the tshirts included the Heads Up,
Eyes Forward logo on the front
and a few examples of distracted
driving on the back.
The team also created magnets
with the campaign logo to distribute to students. The students
signed a pledge against distracted
driving and then received a magnet for their car. Students who
had the magnets on their car had

the chance to win a Student

Parking Space of the Month.
For winning the competition,
the school district receives a driving simulator, a computer program complete with a seat, steering wheel and pedals that are
used in drivers education classes.
With the Lenape district winning
for a fourth time, all four high
schools now have one driving
simulator.
Well donate this one to
Seneca, so now well have one at
each of the four schools, Donaldson said.
The Lenape district does not
plan to see its streak of wins at U
Got Brains end at three. Donaldson said the LDTV students are
already brainstorming new ideas
to promote its Heads Up, Eyes
Forward campaign in new ways
again next year.

Lenape students prepared

to succeed again
Last year, the school district debuted a Prepared to Succeed
video, where graduates from the
four high schools talked about
how the Lenape Regional high
schools best prepared them for
college. The school district released its second Prepared to Succeed video earlier this month.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said the video allows the
community to hear about the positive aspects of the school district
directly from the students.
They really talk about the success and excitement they experienced at our schools, she said.

Eileen R. Marmino, age 34, of
Medford passed away on July 12.
She was the beloved wife of
Paul J. Marmino, III, devoted
mother of Paul Joseph Marmino,
IV and Eileen Claire Marmino,
loving daughter of Bruce and
Eileen (nee Hiller) Lafferty, and
sister of Meghan Lafferty Goins
and Carey Ann Lafferty (Ryan
Fisher). She was the daughter-inlaw of Paul Marmino, Jr. and Sue
Marmino, sister-in-law of Marc
Marmino (Beth) and Jared Snapp
(Adrienne),
granddaughter-inlaw of Ed Hudson. Eileen is also
survived by her nieces and
nephews Sebastian and Harper
Goins, Carson and Greyson
Snapp, Olivia and Roman Marmi-

no, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A former Marlton resident, she
was a 1999 graduate of Cherokee
High School. She received her
bachelor's degree from Arcadia
University and her masters in education from the University of
Phoenix. Eileen was a teacher at
Burlington City High School, and
had formerly worked as a
teacher's aide in Evesham Township, had served in many different capacities at Chartwell Swim
Club in Marlton, and worked at
PAWS Farm and the Philadelphia
Zoo. She was also a member of
the Mothers of Multiples of
South Jersey.
Relatives and friends attended

July 16 and 17
at the Bradley
Funeral Home
in
Marlton.
The Funeral
Mass was celebrated on July
17 at St. Joan
of Arc Church
in Medford.

week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.

Pedacyclist hit by car, killed on Church Road

The following reports are on file with the
Medford Police Department.
On July 12 at 9:16 a.m., Medford Township police, fire, and EMS units
responded to Church Road in
the area of Trotter Drive for a
pedacyclist struck by a vehicle.
Investigation determined that
the driver was operating a 2008
Hyundai Sante Fe west on Church Road
when she struck a pedacyclist also traveling west on Church Road.
The pedacyclist suffered severe head

trauma and was subsequently pronounced

deceased at the scene. The driver was uninjured and remained at the scene following
the crash.
The crash is under investigation by the Medford Township
Police Traffic Bureau.

On July 4 at 7:17 a.m., Medford Police responded to a residence on Woodlake Court for a report of a
stolen dirt bike.
Investigation revealed that between July
1-4, an unknown suspect entered an unse-

cured shed and stole a 2005 Yamaha PW 80

dirt bike valued at $800. The investigation
is still ongoing.
On July 5 at 9:33 a.m., Medford Police responded to a residence on Evergreen
Drive for a report of a possible burglary attempt.
Suspects attempted to gain entry into
the residence by prying the rear glass sliding door.
The suspects were unsuccessful in gaining entry and no items were taken.
The investigation is still ongoing.

Preserving more Pine Barrens

Burlington County Farmland Preservation Program preserves
five farms, bringing total preserved farm acreage to 28,500 acres

The Burlington County Farmland Preservation Programs dedicated trust fund spending is now
at $3.7 million for the year.
Two weeks ago, the program
preserved five more farms, four of
these farms being in the Pine Barrens.
Whether in or out of the
Pinelands, the public support for
the program has remained strong
throughout its 30 years of existence, Farmland Preservation
Coordinator Brian Wilson said.
In 2012, the Burlington County
Farmland Preservation Program
was ranked seventh on the national scale.
Im proud to be part of a program thats been publicly supported and that year in and year
out freeholders have held up as a
priority, he said.
Each year, the organization re-

ceives a new batch of farms. The

2015 batch consists of nine farms,
seven of them being from the
Pine Barrens area.
The county administers the
program based on the New Jersey
agriculture retention and development act, Wilson said.
This law has minimum standards for farms. The county can
impose additional standards or
criteria if need be, but Burlington
County typically does not preserve farms that are fewer than 20
acres.
When preserving a farm, the
program is only purchasing the
developing rights to the farm, not
the land as a whole. The process
of preserving a farm takes about
a year from the time of application to the time of closing the
deal.
The county develops preservation funds using a portion of its
dedicated property tax. As of this
year, that tax is four cents for

Boswick wanted to change any
preconceived notions some might
have about the disease by creating a short documentary on his
grandmother.
Creating awareness is great,
but I wanted to give people a peek
at what its really like and how a
family that is affected by it handles it, Boswick said.
The documentary delves into
the harsh realities of Alzheimers
disease. Boswick titled his work,
The Word Search.
He interwove three interviews
between his mom, his grandmother and Krista McKay, the director of programs and services
at the Alzheimers Association.
He believed it would be beneficial
to include McKay to also give
viewers an idea of whom to look
toward for help if ever faced with
a similar scenario.
The documentary was originally just a class project for Brian Pistones TV Tech Three class.
However, it really captured
Boswick emotionally, and he
wanted to make sure it had that
same effect on viewers, so he
spent some extra time with it.
He believes evoking emotion in
the audience is vital to the success of any form of art.
Whenever youre creating a
work of art, making something
just to make it is not worth it,
Boswick said. I want to make
something that makes my audience sit down and either laugh or
cry, or has some sort of lasting
impact on people.
Drawing from a personal experience has its benefits as far as
drawing raw emotion, but
Boswick admitted it also has its
downfalls.
There were times I had to step
back and remind myself that this
was work, Boswick said. Its
tough to continuously watch this
footage, seeing family members

aired at the Princeton Student Film Festival on July 23.

The documentary has received
quite a response from viewers. In
fact, Boswick was recently informed it was chosen by the
Princeton Student Film Festival
out of 200 films that were sent in
from around the world.
I actually got the email while I
was on set for another movie and
I started freaking out, Boswick
said. I was really honored. Being
recognized for my work is gratifying.
Although Boswick has one
year of high school education left,
he knows he wants to pursue
filmmaking as part of his future.
He plans to begin applying to
film schools in the fall.
Some people view the whole
process of filmmaking as tedious,
but I think it is so much fun to
plan, shoot, edit and see peoples
reactions when you show them
the final product, Boswick said.
