THE POST

The post of Lecturer Film (History and Theory) is situated within the Film subject area.
We are looking for a lm practitioner with skills and experience in lm history and/ or theory to teach on our vibrant and
established BA (Hons) Film Production and MA Film Production courses. You will have a track record in lm history and/ or
theory, be research active and have some teaching experience. In particular, we are looking for someone who understands
and can articulate the importance of the historical and theoretical context for lm to student lm makers.
You will be a strong and effective communicator, sharing our passion for all aspects of lm practice, production and
education.
BA (Hons) Film Production is a specialist course, in the context of a unique specialist Art, Design, Media & Performance
institution. The BA (Hons) Film Production and MA Film Production courses utilise a specialist award structure modelled on
the contemporary lm industry and contextualised by a philosophy of practical learning in an academic environment.
The Arts University Bournemouth is actively involved in academic and practice based research in many areas of art and
design, including lm, animation and photography.
You will be an enthusiastic practitioner who is able to convey an in depth knowledge of lm history and theory to masters
and degree level students.
You will take responsibility for managing the effective learning of all students, including setting, supervising and assessing
work. You will also contribute to the development of the course curriculum and undertake a range of tutorial and pastoral
responsibilities. You should be able to work as part of a team with a commitment to a student centred approach.
Our ideal applicant will be research active and will have experience of teaching lm at undergraduate and postgraduate
level.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


- Provide teaching, assessment, tutorial and pastoral responsibilities in order to enable students to receive a
high quality educational experience.
- Devise and document lesson plans and schemes of work in order to ensure current, relevant and effective teaching
is consistently delivered across the subject area.
- Maintain and contribute to the enhancement of the quality of teaching and learning on courses/awards
- Undertake research and scholarly activity, as well as knowledge transfer activity
- Maintain currency in the subject area and in industry practices
- Effectively meet student expectations through the delivery of duties; enhancing and maintaining high levels of
student performance.
- Support the recruitment and retention of AUB students by engaging in University activities e.g. open days
- Engage in and develop external networks
- Support and represent the activities of the subject area/course/award/faculty
- Contribute to the administration and organisation of a course/award subject area as directed
- Contribute to quality assurance systems and processes
- Work with project teams/working groups to support the achievement of faculty/university objectives
- To observe and adhere to all AUB policies relevant to the role
- To undertake such other duties as may reasonably be requested

The Faculties
The Arts University Bournemouth has two academic faculties where most of the Higher Education provision is located. Both

At the forefront of creative teaching practices, we have a fundamental belief in the value of collaboration across disciplines,
which is practiced across both faculties. Collaboration nurtures curiosity, critical reection, empathy and community, all of
which resonate with the nature of contemporary professional practices.

The Faculty of Media and Performance


The Faculty of Media and Performance is responsible for the development and delivery of a range of undergraduate and
postgraduate courses, as well as for research and knowledge transfer activities. Situated in ve subject areas Photography,
Performing Arts, Film, Animation and Performance Design, the courses offered at BA (Hons) and MA level include: Acting,
Dance, Creative Events Management, Costume and Performance Design, Make Up for Media and Performance, Animation
Production, Commercial Photography, Photography, Visual Effects Design and Production, and Film Production. With its
expertise, the faculty welcomes interest in our post graduate research level (PhD) study programme.
The faculty has an established a Research Centre for Animation which focuses on discourses around documentary
animation. Led by Professor Paul Ward the centre conducts a guest lecture programme and supports national and
international networks in animation. The faculty is an active partner in the established BFX (Animation VFX and Games)
festival which takes place in Bournemouth in the autumn.
Each year the faculty mounts a number of theatre productions which take place at major venues across the conurbation,
including The Lighthouse Poole, Pavilion Bournemouth and at the AUB. Students participate as performers, set designers,
costume makers and make up specialists in these public performances.
The faculty makes in excess of 20 lm productions a year entirely crewed by students of the faculty in courses ranging from
BA Film Production, BA Costume and Performance Design, BA Acting and BA MakeUp for Media and Performance.
Ongoing faculty projects include Building the Bridge, a scheme supporting graduates entering the VFX and Animation
industry and a mentoring and training scheme being developed with Aardman animation.
A new photographic facility will be opened in September 2015 to coincide with the start of a new MA programme in
Photography; the launch of a new undergraduate course in Visual Effects Design and Production, and new extended degree
opportunities in Film Production.

The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture


The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture is responsible for the development and delivery of a range of undergraduate and
postgraduate courses, as well as for research and knowledge transfer projects and activities. Situated in four subject areas
Architecture, Interiors and Modelmaking; Graphics and Communication; Fashion and Textiles; and Fine Art and Illustration,
the courses offered at BA and MA level include: Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design, Modelmaking, Graphic
Design, Visual Communication, Fashion, Textiles, Motion Graphics Design and Production, Fine Art, and Illustration. With its
expertise, the faculty welcomes interest in our post graduate research level (PhD) study program, particularly in areas of ne
art practice/history/theory, and architecture/urban practice/history/theory.
The Faculty boasts innumerable prizes and awards, ranging from D&AD (Design and Art Direction) Pencils to GFW (Graduate
Fashion Week) accolades, from Macmillan Children's Picture Book and Creative Conscience awards to International Society
of Typographers prizes. We pride ourselves on the work our students produce, engaging as it does in critical debates on
contemporary society and industry practices through highly professional levels of making.

The Directorate of External Affairs


Through its award-winning Marketing Department and internationally renowned Gallery, the Directorate of External Affairs
operates as the public face of the Arts University Bournemouth. External networks with industry and with alumni combine
with internal partnerships with faculties, and the Centre for Creative Learning to help deliver the AUBs mission to be the
leading professional university turning creativity into careers. Sections and Schools within the Directorate of External Affairs
provide a gateway through which prospective domestic, EU and international students are introduced to, and encouraged to
remain within, Higher Education. The directorate provides an outward-facing and innovative portfolio of short courses, and
pre-degree offers, particularly within the School of Preparation for Higher Education and Short Courses sections.

These offers develop, and empower students to make informed choices about their future educational or professional paths.
The provision of specialist services such as Widening Participation, and the work of the International Development section
help to embed the principles of accessibility, and diversity into all aspects of the universitys work, whilst the English for
Academic Purposes provision enhances the International student experience.

The Centre of Creative Learning


The Centre of Creative Learning (CCL) consists of Digital Campus Services (DCS), which includes responsibility for Digital
Learning; The Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP); the Library and centralised support and development for Research &
Knowledge Transfer (RKT). This combined group of professional sections is tasked with enabling, sharing and disseminating
knowledge and practice in their own, local areas of responsibility as well as in areas related to creative learning and RKT
across the University.
The CCL achieves its cross institutional work through collaborative work with a network of academic and professional
colleagues who come together in various groups, projects and initiatives such as RKT committee; Learning, Teaching &
Quality (LTQ) committee; Catalyst funded work; Higher Education Academy (HEA) work; the Digital Learning Environment
(DLE); work with the Creative Writer in Residence; Creative Skillset; Research Degrees management (with University of the
Arts London) and the nascent area of Archives development and research.
The CCL is led by the Dean of Creative Learning who works closely with senior staff in the Centre as well as with Faculty Deans,
Professors and Principal Lecturers ensuring a close alignment of the Centre for Creative Learning with University strategies
and plans.

The Directorate for Student Experience


The Directorate for Student Experience is responsible for the services which support the student academic experience,
specically those offered by Student Services, and Campus Services. It also includes the Quality and Standards team, who
manage the processes which assure the academic standards of awards, and the quality of the student experience. The
purpose of the Directorate is thus the establishment, development and maintenance of a distinct student experience for all
AUB students, meeting the needs of specialist creative arts education and providing a learning environment which is
supportive and safe, and enables each student to full their potential. In addition, as University Secretary, the Director holds
responsibility for ensuring legal compliance, and regulatory alignment with the HE operating framework.

The Directorate of Finance and Planning


The Universitys Finance and Planning Directorate is responsible for the institutions nancial affairs and sustainability,
planning, compliance, management information systems, data intelligence and institutional statutory report, audit
and returns.
The directorate has three distinct teams: Finance & Procurement, Management Information Systems (MIS) and Registry
& Planning each of which reports to the Director of Finance & Planning who has the responsibility to ensure that the teams
work together to provide accurate reports and deliver a customer focussed service.
The Finance & Procurement team ensures that all purchases are compliant with the Universitys Financial Regulations and
procurement policies. It facilitates the collection of student fees, funding council grants and services income. It has the
responsibility of ensuring that the annual nancial statements obtain a clear audit report.
MIS plays a critical role in implementing and maintaining the Universitys major systems; the team reviews associated
process and ensure the systems are used to secure efciencies and increased accuracy. MIS creates many of the reports the
University relies on for strategic decision making.
Registry and Planning is the owner of the student record system which is the critical business tool in managing student
applications, enrolments, assessment and the generation of Exam Board reports. The team maintains the accuracy of the
student data and generates returns to substantiate funding council grants. It plays a critical role in the planning of student
numbers which in turn informs the Universitys allocation of resources.
