MARGARET KENYATTA, THE FIRST LADY OF THE

REPUBLIC OF KENYA, DURING THE 9TH STOP CERVICAL, BREAST AND
PROSTATE CANCER IN AFRICA CONFERENCE ON TUESDAY, JULY 21, 2015 AT
2:00 P.M. AT KENYATTA INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE, NAIROBI

Thank you, Cabinet Secretary.

Your Excellency William Ruto, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,

Fellow First Ladies,
Distinguished Guests,
Good afternoon.

We have come to the end of a successful 9th Stop Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer in Africa
Conference and I would like to congratulate all the delegates for a job well done.

As the host, I am pleased with the efforts you have put in, in the last three days, to realise the
outcomes that will guide the fight against cervical, breast and prostate cancers across Africa now
and into the future.

One of the outcomes of this conference is that you will be going back to your home countries
with increased awareness about the cancers. I urge you to share this new knowledge with
your colleagues and the public, so that we can win the fight against cancer.

Your work complements our advocacy efforts to commit leaders in Africa and the world to
support the campaign to expand access to prevention, treatment and palliative care services for
people with cancer.

We are not only focusing on government leaders, but also on private sector executives. We want
to build stronger public-private partnerships among African and global institutions to improve
access and the quality of preventive, treatment and palliative care services.

It is my wish that we step up our communications by working closely with the media, civil
society, communities and other stakeholders so that our aspirations can be realised speedily.

I urge you to use all available avenues to disseminate information about cancer so that we can
have healthy populations and healthy nations.

As Chairperson of the Forum of African First Ladies and Spouses against Cervical, Breast and
Prostate Cancer, it is my pleasure together with fellow First Ladies, to sign the Nairobi
Declaration of African First Ladies and Spouses on Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancers.

I would like to sincerely thank fellow First Ladies for participating in this conference. I look
forward to working with all of you, in the coming year, as we continue the fight against this
dreaded disease.

Let me also thank all our supporters, sponsors and stakeholders for their immense show of
confidence in us and in the efforts to fight cancer.

A big thank you, too, to everyone who has worked hard to make the 9th SCCA conference a
success. It has not been easy but you have done a splendid job.

In conclusion, let me remind you that we must realise that only in unity of purpose can we garner
the collective strength of mind and will that we need to wage a formidable fight against this
scourge.

I wish you all a safe journey back home to your families and friends. But do not be in a hurry to
leave just yet; make sure you visit Kenyas beautiful parks, and interesting sites that our
country offers. I guarantee you that it will be a memorable experience.

Please visit us again and again, you will always be welcome.

Thank you.
