Locals, visitors appreciate downtown Haddonfields offerings

Last week, the sidewalks of
downtown Haddonfield were
filled with tables, tents and
racks displaying all kinds of
products from running shoes to
dresses to books. People roamed

the displays looking at what the

stores had to offer, in a place that
not many towns have.
Visitors from the area and as
far as the west coast came to
downtown Haddonfield for the
Sidewalk Sale on Thursday, Aug.
6. The sale ran from Thursday to
Sunday, featuring a variety of

products, sales and season previews.

The Sun walked around town
interviewing folks to ask why
they were there and what having
a downtown in Haddonfield
meant to them.

Swim Club is used to coming out
on top in the Tri-County Swimming Pool Association.
The team wrapped up its fifth
consecutive undefeated dual meet
season in July and entered the
TCSPA
Swimming
Championships on the weekend of Aug. 1
looking for its third-consecutive
team championship.
Wedgewood didnt just win the
championship, it won by its
largest margin in the past three
years.
Wedgewood swam to a big win
at the 59th annual Tri-County
Championships, defeating second-place Deerbrook Swim Club
in Medford by 328.5 points.
Wedgewoods 1,371.5 points were
the most any team had recorded
in the Tri-County Championships
since 2006.
Jim Villa, head coach for
Wedgewood, said the win was a
testament to the teams depth.
We had 16 kids make the fi-

nals this year, he said. We were

also real strong in the relays this
year, much more than in years
past.
The relays were a huge part of
Wedgewoods success. The girls
8-and-under 100-meter medley
and freestyle relay teams both
won their events. Wedgewood
also won the boys 9-10 200-meter
freestyle relay, the girls 11-12 200meter freestyle relay and the
boys 15-18 200-meter freestyle
relay.
Wedgewood got strong performances from its younger swimmers. In addition to the relay
teams achievements, 8-year-old
Meredith Whelehan won the girls
8-and-under 25-meter freestyle, 10year-old Amelia Wright won the
girls 9-10 25-meter backstroke and
12-year-old Grayson Wright was
the winner in the boys 11-12 50meter butterfly.
In the younger age groups, we
went and swept the age groups in
a lot of meets, Villa said.

Catherine T. Frangos

Catherine T. Frangos (nee
Theodoris) died peacefully on
Aug. 1 in the presence of her family. She was the widow of Chris J.
Frangos and is survived by her
son Zachary C. Frangos, son
Theodore A Frangos (Suzanne)
and her daughter Leigh C Frangos-Li (James). Her brother Stelio T Theodoris and five grandchildren Andrew and Julianna
Frangos and Chris, Catherine
and Francesca Li also survive her.
Catherine was a vibrant
human being who lived life to the
fullest. She always enjoyed the
moment whether surrounded by
her adoring grandchildren or in

an exotic location around the

world. She was devoted to her
family, who treasured her, and left
behind a cadre of friends who
sought her company and appreciated her for the honest, genuine,
non-judgmental person that she
was.
Born in Camden on Sept. 26,
1928,
she
graduated
from
Woodrow Wilson High School in
1946, got married in 1954 and
raised three children before obtaining her bachelors degree
from Glassboro State College in
1982. She taught in the Camden
School district and at Christ the
King School in Haddonfield before
retiring to Atlantic City to be near
the ocean and beach that she
loved. She was a member of the

in the area and
volunteered at

and Atlantic
City Aquariums and the
Atlantic City

Library.
A memorial service will be
held on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m.

Cherry Hill. Hinski-Tomlinson

spending $1.5 million to outfit
1,000 troopers over the next
nine months with body cameras. Its a
hefty price to pay for technology, but a
very small one when considering the
good it will do.
Body cameras for police have become increasingly popular throughout
the country following police shootings
that made national headlines in places
such as Ferguson, Mo.
Troopers will wear the body cameras on either their shirt or their hat,
and will be required to turn them on
during traffic stops, protests, investigations and while making arrests.

Hoffman said the cameras will act as
an objective witness in police-involved
shootings and other use-of-force incidents.
Some local police departments, such
as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and
even Rowan University, have already
adopted body cameras for their police
forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local departments buy cameras.
Police body cameras are a wonderful
idea, and any state money that can be
used to help local departments outfit
their officers with them is a good
thing.
The safety and security of the people
of New Jersey are of the utmost importance, above all other concerns of
living in our state. Any initiative that
improves that safety and security
while at the same time serving as an
objective judge for citizens and officers is something that should be explored and implemented.

Five candidates vie for three open

seats in November BOE election

Novembers Board of Education election for Haddonfield Public Schools will
be a contested one, as five candidates filed
to run for the boards three open seats, according to the Camden County Clerks office.
The only incumbent board member
running is Susan Kutner. Kutner joined
the board this year to fill the unexpired
term for Andrew Berlin and was chosen

by the board for the open seat.

The new candidates, Joshua Drew,
Joseph Evangelisti, Glenn R. George and
Adam M. Sangillo, will also be running
for the three open seats. Maureen Eyles,
who joined the board in 2012, and Dennis
Kelleher, who joined in 2008, are the two
board members not running for re-election.
The Haddonfield Public Schools Board
of Education election will take place
alongside the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Homegrown plants produce

savings and education

The height of the
summer growing
season is upon us,
and things are in
full bloom at the
Camden County
Greenhouse. The
newly invigorated
greenhouse is located at the Camden
County
Environmental
Campus at Lakeland. Dedicated
volunteers are currently growing
more than 15,000 plants that will
beautify the Camden County
Park System.
In years past, the park system
would purchase flowers from
commercial green houses, but
now the thousands of plants used
to enliven the county and the park
system are all locally grown in
county facilities. The greenhouse
is currently growing more than
5,000 winter pansy seedlings for
planting in this fall.
We completely transformed our
100-foot-long greenhouse that had
sat vacant for several years. In addition to supplying our parks
with vegetation, it hosts a unique
learning experience in collaboration with the Rutgers Master
Gardeners program.
This year, we also focused on
three main annuals: Petunias,
Verbena, & Lantana. They were
selected for their drought tolerance, ease of care and vibrant colors. This has created a substantial
savings since we were able to buy
much smaller plants and grow
them with the help of our Rutgers
Master Gardeners and volunteers
from local municipal green
teams.
Camden County Master Gardeners and certified community
greenhouse members are on
hand to teach volunteers the gardening process from seeds to full
grown plants. Children can come

here to see how

fruits and vegetables are grown, and
become inspired to
start their own
gardens.
We are continuing
to expand the programming offered
at the greenhouse,
and have great
plans for the future
of the environmental campus.
Currently, we are completing the
roof on our new potting shed at
the facility and are looking forward to opening the first certified
outdoor classroom in South Jersey through the Explore Nature
Program. These new features
will join the Camden County Sensory Garden, an immersive experience for children of all abilities.
The Camden County Environmental Campus is located at 508
Lakeland Road in Gloucester
Township. The newest addition
to the Camden County Park System has transformed an eightacre site at the Lakeland Complex
in the Blackwood neighborhood
into a hub for community gardening and environmental education.

On Tuesday, July 28 at approximately 3:30 p.m. the
suspect of the armed
robbery and priest carjacking that occurred
on June 16 at the Haddonfield Rite Aid pharmacy was arrested. The suspect,
of Mantua, was taken into custody in Cherry Hill.
A Haddonfield officer temporally assigned to the Detective Bu-

reau, gathered information on

the suspects whereabouts.
While enroute to confirm the
suspects location, the officer observed the suspects vehicle traveling in Cherry Hill.
The officer followed
the suspect into the
parking lot of a convenience store and
called for the assistance of the Cherry Hill Police
Department.

The suspect was charged with
robbery, carjacking, aggravated
assault and weapons offenses and
remanded to the Camden County
Jail in lieu of $315,000 cash
bail.
On July 20, a 19-year-old man of
Camden was arrested and
charged for committing multiple
vehicle burglaries.
He was remanded in lieu of
posting bond.
All vehicles were unlocked.

$1,000 grant from Wells Fargo
Interfaith Caregivers was
awarded a $1,000 grant in July by
Wells Fargo to support the nonprofit organizations mission of
facilitating independent living by
providing supportive volunteer
services for people who are elderly or have disabilities in Haddonfield, Haddon Heights and surrounding communities.
Interfaith Caregivers staff and
more than 300 volunteers provide
basic free-of-charge services such
as transportation, shopping and
companionship that enable residents who are elderly or disabled
to remain independent and in
their communities.
At a time when donations
from the public and private sectors are down due to the economy,
we truly appreciate the support
Wells Fargo has provided, said
MaryAnn Bigelow, executive director of Interfaith Caregivers.

nity to celebrate and say thank

you to Interfaith Caregivers for
all of the value they have provided to our community over the
past year.
The Community Connections
program offers Wells Fargo store
managers the opportunity to provide additional grants to local
nonprofits of their choice in New
Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
A total of $140,000 in Community Connections grants was slated to be distributed throughout
the month of July in Southern
New Jersey.
Many of our Wells Fargo team
members also volunteer or are
impacted by Interfaith Caregivers
in some way, Denise Lathrope,
Haddonfield branch manager.

Sale for a variety of reasons;
some came specifically for the
sale. In 2012, Wanda Howe of Atco
found a $10 dress at Jay West that
she loved from the Sidewalk Sale
and has been coming back ever
since. Evelyn Perodeau, a Haddonfield resident, comes every
year to help support local business, learning about it years ago
through the paper. Lynn Axelson
of Haddon Heights, along with
her daughter Ella, decided to have
a girls day and come to the Sidewalk Sale.
I like all of the little clothing
boutiques, Lynn said.
Others, such as Haddonfield
resident Dave Cimetta, were just
passing through and decided to
stop and take a look.

Thursday didnt know about the
Sidewalk Sale in advance, but decided to stop for the products and
sales.
For Haddonfield residents, the
downtown area is a place of community and convenience. They
said they like being able to walk
to the stores as well as the personalized attention they get from the
local shops. They feel it is an experience you cant get anywhere
else.
I like being able to just walk
out my front door and walk to all
of the shops. Everything is within walking distance, Lynn said.
I like the personalized attention that we get in the boutiques
and shops that you dont get from
the mall. I much prefer supporting the businesses in town, Perodeau said.
(Having a downtown area in
Haddonfield) means a lot. Otherwise, you dont feel as connected
to the community. It is a feature
other towns dont have, Cimetta
said.
Shop workers said they like the
community as well as the variety
of products and services downtown has to offer.
From a worker in Haddonfield, (downtown) is nice. We get
to know our clientele, which is really rare when you work in retail.
Here, I know everyone by name
and get to greet them when they
come in, Julia Clarke of The Little Shop said.
All of the stores are really
great; they offer a lot of variety.

it from recruiting swimmers outside Haddonfield. To counter this,
Villa has established a strong development program for Haddonfields swimmers starting when
they are as a young as 5 and 6
years old.
We like to develop the kids on
our own, Villa said. We are
probably at a disadvantage in that
we cant recruit kids from anywhere like the other clubs can do.
So its somewhat of a unique challenge to develop our kids into the
best kids out here.
Wedgewoods focus throughout
the season is on improving speed
and skills. With Tri-County meets
consisting of sprint events, swimming fast and mistake-free is key
to coming out on top.

Villa also works with a number
of Haddonfield swimmers yearround. He also coaches at Jersey
Wahoos in Mt. Laurel and said
the number of Haddonfield swimmers coming out to Jersey Wahoos has increased each year.
Im fortunate to have a lot of
these kids who swim year-round,
he said.
Wedgewoods many hours of
training and practice paid off in
the biggest meet of the season. In
the weekends final event, the
boys 15-18 200-meter freestyle
relay swam away with the win.
While the team championship
was decided well before the final
race, it was very much a satisfying ending to a meet Wedgewood
dominated from beginning to
end.
We had a great performance
on Saturday and came back even
stronger on Sunday, Villa said.
They worked hard, they paid attention, they worked on the speed
and skills we talked about.
