Thomas Embling Hospital is a high security foren- inmates.[10]


sic mental health hospital located in Faireld, an inner
Melbourne suburb in Victoria, Australia. The facility
is operated by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Men- 3 See also

The hospital was purpose built with 116 secure beds and
opened in April 2000.[2] It functions as both a prison service and a hospital service, providing advanced clinical
treatment and programs for both male and female occupants.

The hospital is named after Thomas Embling, an English born doctor, who emigrated to Australia and was
appointed Resident Medical Ocer at the Yarra Bend
Lunatic Asylum.

the former Faireld Infectious Diseases Hospital and adjacent to the former HM Prison Fairlea which was originally the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum.

In February 2015, a patient who had stabbed her


boyfriend 17 times, was allowed unescorted leave, and
failed to return to the hospital. [4] She was found safe and
well and returned by police the following day.[5]
