AMOUNT OF GRANT (RM) : 50, 740.00
TYPE OF GRANT : FRGS
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The failure of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) produces abnormal kinematics of the knee joint and leads
to knee instability. Graft fixation is the critical issue in the ACL reconstruction especially during the
primary post operative period. Interference screw has become as one of the most commonly used
fixation methods for ACL reconstruction. In this study, the stress distribution and displacement in the ACL
reconstruction are established using finite element method. The treated knee model consists of a
interference screw implanted inside the distal femoral. Contact force and tensile load are simulated
along the tunnel axis towards the tibia which approximates the graft tension of the knee during gait.
The objectives of this research are to formulate the mechanical model of interference screw fixation in
ACL reconstruction on the resulting stress distribution and total displacement. Also, to investigate the
fundamental mechanical factors that influence the stability of the interferences screw fixation, i.e. screw
design, material selection using finite element method.
Initial stage of the research methodology is to concentrate on the literature study of the knee joint,
anatomy and function of the ACL and ACL reconstruction. The next stage is the development of CAD
model that represents the mechanism involved in the ACL reconstruction. The respective models are
adapted from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. The models of the femur and interference screws
will be simulated using finite element analysis. Then, simulations with different geometries and materials
of interference screw are established. The results of the screws fixation will be discussed with respect to
the primary stability of ACL reconstruction. Findings from the computational study will be discussed and
validated with previous works done by others researches including clinical findings.
Outcomes of the study will contribute to predict the primary stability of the interference screw fixation.
Some fundamental factor will be identified especially mechanical factor to minimize the failure of ACL
reconstruction. This work could be extended to look other aspects of biomechanics through
experimental and clinically.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY : (copied and adapted from e-science project document)

Industrial occupations such as metal stamping workers, electronic assembly operators and automotive
industry welders require standing in one area for long periods of time. Due to improper design of flooring
conditions and shoe insoles, they may experience muscles fatigue in the lower back and legs. Ideally all
standing task should permit workers to adopt different working position i.e. seated or standing position
without affecting the capability to perform the task. Work-related musculoskeletal problems associated with
prolonged standing potentially reduce occupational health quality of Malaysian industrial workers. In reality,
the efforts to minimize the work-related musculoskeletal problems associated with prolonged standing have
several constrains that can be summarized as follow:
(i)
(ii)

There is no Malaysian standard for prolonged standing for Malaysian industrial workers.
The solutions to counter muscle fatigue associated with prolonged standing are not well documented
and their effectiveness has not been proven.
Realizing negative impacts of prolonged standing to the workers health, the objective of this research is to
manage muscle activity of workers and explore effective solutions in order to remove muscle fatigue
associated with prolonged standing.

AMOUNT OF GRANT (RM) : 48, 000.00
TYPE OF GRANT : FRGS

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
For the past few years, a considerable number of damage identification techniques have been proposed
and successfully tested on vibration data obtained from a wide range of mechanical structures. Most
techniques, for the identification of cracks, make use of an analytical model (e.g., finite element model)
of the structure. Other techniques aim for the same objective without making use of of such models.
Until recently, some of these non-finite element model damage identification techniques were restricted
to the domain of input-output data (i.e. experimental modal analysis method). For instance, the
sensitivity-based technique, and the changes in flexibility method both require normalized mode shape
estimates. Since the most straightforward normalization procedure of mode shapes involves the
combined measurement of force and response at a driving point location, the application of such
techniques to output-only data was not evident.
This research is about applying output only modal models (as oppose to input-output data normally
used method) on damage detection specifically on large 3D structure such as space frame, tower cranes,
offshore structures etc. Numerical simulations and experimental works are carried out to achieve the
objective. The method allows the normalization of operational mode shape estimates, as obtained from
output-only data, purely on a basis of output-only modal models. Combination of this method with the
existing damage identification techniques extends their applicability towards output-only data.

AMOUNT OF GRANT (RM) : 44, 720.00

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The present study is aimed to model, simulate and experimentally and analytically evaluate the
progressive failure of the plates from the initial failure, which is the First Ply Failure, up to the total
failure, which is the Last Ply Failure. A failure criterion with the existence of coupling terms to determine
the mode of failure for composite materials is employed. The uniqueness of this criterion compared to all
other existing criteria which could determine mode of failure, is that it includes the coupling terms,
which relate the interaction between the longitudinal and transverse stresses. As a consequence, it
allows the interaction between the fiber properties and the matrix properties in terms of strength of the
material, which other failure criteria have neglected. The behavior and the pattern of the progressive
failure are studied. The results obtained with current failure criterion are then compared with the results
obtained with existing failure criteria.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :(copied and adapted from FRGS project document)
Rocket injector is a very critical component since that small differences in its design can result in
dramatically different performance. The principal function of the injector is to break the fuel up into very
small droplets. The smaller droplets are necessary for fast quiet ignition and to establish a flame front close
to the injector head, thus shorter combustion chamber is possible to be utilized. A number of swirl
injectors of different geometrical dimensions is to be fabricated from Perspex. An experimental test rig is
to be constructed to measure the discharge coefficient, spray cone angle, spray breakup length and air
core diameter for different injection pressure. These data are crucial in designing an efficient and high
performance rocket injector.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Oil extraction rate in the palm oil mill is a critical contributing factor to the mill revenue. Higher oil
extraction rate with less amount of Fresh Fruit Bunch processed is what palm oil millers aimed to achieve.
The oil content in riped palm oil fruits is higher than that of unriped palm oil fruits. Since the main
contributing factor to the maximization of oil extraction rate on the palm oil fruits is on the degree of
ripeness of palm oil fruits, a proper grading system should be developed to assist the palm oil millers. The
normal practice in grading FFB at palm oil mill is done by mill operators through visual inspection and this is
extremely tedious and time consuming which is prone to errors and inconsistencies in grading results. Thus,
modifying and redesigning the manual grading process to become an automated grading system by
introducing a Vision System which uses CCD camera to capture the image of the fruits to recognize the
degree of ripeness of FFB would help to increase the oil extraction rate, quality and productivity of palm oil
production. This study will also look into computerizing the current manual grading form that is being
practiced by the mill.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
With the growth of interest towards humanoid robots, anthropomorphism of robotic hands becomes
a necessary design goal that has been purposely addressed by most research projects such as Utah Hand
(Jacobsen, Iversen, Knutti, Johnson and Biggers 1986), UB Hand (Bonivento, Melchiorri and Vassura 1992)
and Barrett Hand (Townsend 2000). An anthropomorphic placement allows to easily transferring grasp
strategies from a human hand to the robot hand but the different sizes of each finger and their asymmetric
placement makes the construction more expensive and the control system more complicated. Even though
there is so many efforts devoted to designing and building of anthropomorphic robotic hands but many of it
is not anatomical. It could not mimic all materials and structure of a human hand because human cells are
replaced every day to deal with wear and state of upper-limb prosthesis technology. Upper-limb prosthesis is
either hook or hand-shaped and are actuated by body or external power. The problem is the current devices
are lack of degree of freedom (DOF), heavy and did not have any aesthetic value. This project will focus on
improving the existing prosthetic hand and creating a variable choice of application for the amputation
people depending on their preference.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
A tactile sensor is a device that can measure a given property of an object or contact event through
physical contact between the sensor and the object. A rapid increasing of researches and industries
related with robotics, mechatronics and medical have urged the development of a reliable tactile sensor
system to support and improve robotics system. Tactile sensor has great potential to define objects
physical property information such as stiffness, structure and texture that cannot be done accurately by
other type of sensors, thus make it essential as sensory device in robotic system to effectively work and
operate in real world. This project proposed the development of intelligent tactile sensor system for
application in humanoid robot hand. The proposed tactile sensor applies a new sensing principle using a
waveguide transduction method. Such a sensing principle is expected to provide better sensing accuracy
to realize contact phenomena by acquiring the three axial directions of the forces, so that normal and
shearing forces can be measured simultaneously. The proposed tactile sensor is design in a hemispherical
dome shape with an array of sensing elements to mimic human finger structure. The sensor hardware
structure consists of light source, optical fibre scope, high resolution CCD camera and acrylic dome. The
image taken by the CCD camera is analyzed using an image processing software installed in a PC. This
project scope is starting from development of the sensor hardware structure and control system. The
next step is calibrations and performance evaluations of the tactile sensor. The research and
development will be conducted mainly at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam with
technical support from Nagoya University. The duration of the proposed project is expected within 24
months.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The quest for improved vehicle safety especially in the aspects of structural crashworthiness has prompt
designers and engineers to come up with new and innovative ideas in fulfilling the above requirements.
Although most types of transportation for example locomotive, marine and aerospace will be subjected
to some form of crash incidents, it is the automotive sector that exhibits the most widespread cases and
highly publicized in the media. Therefore, much attention and effort have been put into improving the
structural crashworthiness of such vehicles. Although 90% of the causes of accidents are due to human
factors, safer vehicles can still save considerable number of lives and reduce the severity of injuries to the
occupants.
A typical passenger car chassis consists of a combination of framework and shell structures. They are
pressed , welded and bolted to form the complete structure. The framework structures are typically
hollow sections or column of various shapes and sizes. The shell structures for example hood, boot and
door panel are in principles, plates with stiffeners. The total crashworthiness of a full car structure
involves the plastic deformation (yielding) and interaction of all the components and sub-components
within the structure. To gain better understanding and appreciation of the behavior of structures when
subjected to impact loading, the individual component is therefore studied in depth. Extensive work has
been carried out to study the energy absorbing capability of selected geometries that represent
individual component of car chassis structure. The front chassis structure can be approximated as a
rectangular hollow section subjected to axial crushing during frontal impact. The chassis A, B and C
pillars can be approximated as a rectangular hollow structure subjected to lateral loading during rollover
of the car. The side impact bar can be approximated as hollow bars subjected to mid span loading
(bending) during side impact. This research will focus on the performance of slotted square column
subjected to dynamic axial load with the aim of reducing the initial peak impact force and maintaining
the stable energy absorption capability.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Oil Palm fruit bunch fibre (OPFB) derived from empty fruit bunch (EFB) that are abundantly available in
Malaysia as oil palm mill waste, is worthy to explore its capability as filler in composites. Previous work,
showed that the addition of PPnanoclay into OPFB/PP composites has improved its tensile modulus,
flexural properties and impact strength. The study has also found out that the combination of its clay and
coarser OPFB particles (250 m) indicate more properties improvement. Thus this study will further
investigate the effect of clay as secondary fillers on the impact behavior of OPFB/PPnanoclay/PP hybrid
composites at various PPnanoclay loading and OPFB size of greater than 250 m (however less than 500
m within the capability of available injection moulding). The optimum PPnanoclay loading and OPFB size
will be investigated for those composites. Thereby, hybrid composites consisted of oil palm fruit bunch
(OPFB) fibre, polypropylene-clay (PPnanoclay) nanocomposites and pure polypropylene at various
PPnanoclay loading and OPFBsize will be compounded by using thermal mixer. The test samples will be
prepared by using injection moulding machines. The composite samples will be characterized according
to ASTM standard for tensile, flexural and impact tests. Fracture surface observation will also be
conducted to have further understanding on the role of secondary filler in hybrid composites.
Some basic mechanical propeties and the impact strength of the composites will be obtained to
complement the existing data or information on OPFB filled polymer composites. The information is
expected to be useful in promoting OPFB as natural filler in polymer composites especially for
automotive application.

(EDX). The hardness, impact (ASTM E23), tensile (TS 138 EN10002-1) and density test were carried out
before and after heat treatment process. The fracture surface of the tensile and impact samples will
examine under Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). A treatment process is expected possessed the
better mechanical properties compared to conventional heat treatment can be used for the specific
application that suite the properties requirement such as in automotive part, heavy machinery and pipe
industries. The scientific understanding of materials matrix transformation on each sequential cycle of
new heat treatment technique will be contribute to a knowledge for Metallurgical area.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The use of split-type air-conditioners is a common standard provision in new residential projects of
Malaysia. The advantages of the split type units lie in the quiet operation and flexibility in multi-room
services. However, installation of more than 50 condensing units of the split-type air-conditioning system
in a high-rise residential building has become a common problem for architectural design. Building
developers often try to squeeze the space to a narrowly confined area due to skyrocketing land price
while architects usually seek a solution to hide the condensing units at building re-entrant surrounded by
walls on three-sides or even four sides based on aesthetic consideration.
A potential problem for a significant temperature rise in the confined spaced due to the heat rejected
from a large number of condensing units can lead serious consequences. High temperature in the
confined space not only causes uncomfortable thermal environment to neighbouring residents, who
have access to the space such as windows, corridors or balconies, but also affect seriously performance
of the air-conditioning system and shorten the lifespan of compressors. If the on-oil temperature of a
condensing units is raised by 1C, the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system drops by around
3%. If the temperature remains above 46C for a longer period, it will by design automatically trip
because of excessive working refrigerant pressure.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Skin is the largest organ of the human body with a complicated multi-layered structure. Its mechanical
properties are important in many applications but not well understood. The complex behavior of skin
makes it challenging, yet interesting, when measuring and quantifying its mechanical properties.
Accepting this challenge, this study aims to simulate human skin deformation based on the information
and data obtained from experiments employing a novel experimental technique developed earlier. The
experimental protocol to measure in vivo the deformation of human skin has been conducted
successfully; and this research will continue the work in quantifying the mechanical properties of human
skin.
Finite element (FE) models will be developed using software (i.e. MSc Nastran) to simulate skin
deformation based on the information gained from the experiments. Systematic case studies will be built
up to study the effect of element types, mesh sizes, loading types. It is hypothesized that the material
parameters for human skin could be estimated based on the Ogden mathematical model using inverse FE
analysis approach.
The experimental-computational integration will be highlighted and the results will compared with
existing literatures. This research is expected to produce simple but robust FE models that could simulate
skin deformation with reasonable accuracy. Moreover, the success in integrating experimental and
numerical approaches will be invaluable knowledge and experience to the researchers.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Corrosion is a major problem in many industrial applications and the damage effect has been estimated
to cost millions annually. Chromium coatings typically produced from hexavalent chromium plating baths
have been mainly used to impart corrosion resistant to various components for these industrial
applications. However, these types of coatings have shown to increase the risk of lung and nose cancer of
personal working in plating shops. Further drawbacks of this particular coating are the relatively high
costs involved in producing chromium deposits and low plating efficiency-as temperature increases
thermal motion of atoms weakens the bonding strength resulting in a decrease of wear resistant and
hardness of plated layer. Hence, the present research project proposed will address this problem by
developing a new coating alternative focusing on nanostructured cobalt coatings. Recent efforts have
shown that nanocrystalline Co and its alloys have been identified as candidate materials for replacing
hexavalent Cr coatings in wear and corrosion resistant coating applications due to their comparable
hardness and lower volume wear loss compared to that of hexavalent Cr coatings. Unfortunately very
limited work has been done on the corrosion properties of cobalt. Therefore, this project aims at
establishing a detailed mechanism of the corrosion behavior of electrodeposited Co and its alloys using
potentiodynamic polarization. The effects of grain size reduction on the corrosion properties of
nanocrystalline Co and its alloys will also be assessed to achieve superior mechanical and corrosion
properties. This research work will significantly contribute to the improvements of the wear resistant in
nanocrystalline materials and thus provide the solution of replacing the poisonous chromium plating
with enhanced corrosion resistant properties of nanostructured Co alloy coating.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
In the conventional walking rehabilitation, physiotherapist has to assist hemiplegic patients (ankle
dorsiflexor muscles with lack of dorsiflexion assist moment) in rehabilitation therapy by using gait
training in parallel bars. Physiotherapist has to support hemiplegic patient to position foot and also
suppots their stand balance. This prolong multiple task puts extra burden to physiotherapist which gives
side effect such as muscular strain or bone fracture while doing the task. As a result, the motion of the
patients foot will not follow the normal gait pattern. Therefore, there is a need to develop an effective
ankle foot orthosis (AFO) to solve the current problems. This research will embark on the modeling and
designing of new ankle foot orthosis (AFO) to help patients with ankle dorsiflexor muscle problems. The
outcome of this project will produce an innovative model of dynamic ankle foot orthosis (AFO) that is
designed to allow and train the patients for the normal gait pattern motion while serving to maintain
proper foot position and orientation.
This new model of total ankle foot orthosis will provide better physiological function of the ankle joint. In
addition to that, this new model of ankle foot orthosis (AFO) will introduce greater functionality over
currently available in the market. The flexion and extension of the ankle foot orthosis while walking will
be modelled more accurately according to its position, orientation as well forces that follow strictly
related to the ligaments of tibia, talus and calcaneus. This will restore physiological pattern of ligament
tensioning for fast healing of the patients.

A research on the design concept of an MAV that is mission capable has been conducted. The objectives
of the research is to come up with a design concept of an MAV that is mission capable. Since this is only a
preliminary work the goal is limited to be able to design and build functional MAVs that can be flown and
controlled. A straight wing with a low aspect ratio was proposed. A (horizontal) tailless configuration was
adopted. Wash out wing twist was utilized to produce longitudinal stability. Control of the MAV is
provided by elevator and rudder, and done through radio control. The rudder serves both the lateral and
directional control. The wing was based on the MH-61 airfoil for the wing-root and the MH-64 for the tip.
The airplane aerodynamics were obtained by conducting testing in the wind tunnel. Flight testing of the
MAV had been conducted. It is proven that this MAV could fly and can be controlled.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Metal Injection Molding is an attractive process especially fro small, precision parts combined with
complicated shapes. It combines the advantages of net-shaped components of powder metallurgy (P/M)
and easy shaping of plastic injection molding. The process starts with mixing of metal powder and binder to
form a homogenous feedstock, followed by injection molding in order to shape the feedstock. Binder is
then removed completely by a debinding process and finally sintered to consolidate the powder.
Many studies have been carried out in developing a novel binder system in MIM with the aim of shortening
the overall debinding time and at the same time maintain shape integrity during subsequent processing [48]. In previous study conducted by A. Amalina et. al., 17-4 PH stainless steel powder has been successfully
molded with binder consisting of polyethylene (PE), paraffin wax (PW), palm stearin (PS), thermoplastic
natural rubber (TPNR) and stearic acid (SA) to form a homogenous feedstock.
In this proposed research work, the main aim is to develop a novel binder system which may improve the
functional properties and performance of M2 High Speed Steel (M2 HSS) in demanding applications and
thus increase the competitiveness of M2 HSS versus cemented carbides primarily in machining operations.
As Malaysia produces hundred tones of natural rubber every year which has been utilized in production of
rubber based products it is hoped that waste rubber which is currently underutilized can be used as one of
the binder components in metal injection molding of M2 HSS.
It is also hoped that the abundant supply of waste rubber could be utilized to produce a novel binder
system which is desirable for both economic and environmental reasons. The novel binder system could be
patented and can be used in local manufacturing industries producing small, high precision and
complicated shapes of metallic parts.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The impact properties of new fiber based kenaf will be studied. This research will concentrate on the low
velocity impact testing behavior on fiberglass as well as without fiberglass composites as a control.
Nowadays, the commercial applications of composite materials such as natural fibre reinforced plastics
are continually increasing, but there is still a poor understanding of certain aspects such as their response
to low velocity impact performance. Many composite materials exhibit relatively poor resistance to
impact, post impact tensile and failure processes. Both are frequently encountered during impact and
failure loading. In order to overcome these problems, fiberglass (chopped strand mat, CSM and woven)
with kenaf powder, short and long kenaf fibre reinforced composite materials with tensile strength and
post impact tensile properties will be developed to enhance the properties of kenaf composite.
The material of kenaf (powder, short and long kenaf fiber) will be used. Reinforced with polyester and
fiberglass. Sample for 7 weight percentage (0% wt, 5% wt, 10% wt, 20% wt, 25% wt and 30% wt) will be
prepared to experience the low velocity impact test. For impact testing, use of Instron mechanical testing
machine with one speed and according to ISO 527. study of fracture under SEM will be carried out to
identify type of fracture behaviors.
The main objective of this research to identify the properties of low velocity impact on new laminated
fiberglass kenaf fibre composite. This research is expected to produce a low velocity impact properties of
kenaf with and without fiberglass.

To Study The Effect Of Dielectric On The Performance Of Electrical

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is one of the non-traditional machining techniques. It has been
widely used in Malaysia for machining plastic injection moulds, stamping dies and parts for automotive,
defense, electronic and telecommunication industries. The process is based on removing material from a
part by a series of repeated electrical discharges between a tool called electrode and the work piece with
the presence of dielectric. The dielectric serves as the transportation of removed particles, remains
electrically non-conducting until the breakdown voltage is reached, reconditions the dielectric strength,
increases the energy density in plasma channel and cools the electrode. The performances of machining
using different dielectrics are measured through material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR) and
surface roughness (SR). Three different types of dielectrics viz., Kerosene, Novis and Amoil were
employed in the experiments using copper and copper tungsten electrode. 54 specimens namely ASSAB
718HH, SKD 61 and Tungsten Carbide, were machined in positive as well as negative polarities of
machining in variation of current and capacitance. Taguchi Method with ANOVA analysis was employed.
The machining was conducted using Hitachi H-DS02N EDM machine and the research methodology
together with the equipment used throughout the experiments are presented. Roundness, hardness,
depth of cut, microstructure and white layer of machined surface were investigated. Selected work
pieces were examined using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Dispersive X-Ray
Spectroscopy (EDX) for the surface and elemental analysis. The results confirm that different types of
dielectric do influence the machining performance. Kerosene is suitable to be used in obtaining optimum
TWR and SR for ASSAB 718HH. Optimum MRR for ASSAB and optimum TWR for Tungsten carbide can be
obtained when Novis is used as the dielectric. Amoil is suitable to machined Tungsten carbide (for
optimum MRR and SR) and SKD 61 (for optimum MRR, TWR and SR).

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Biodiesel is an environmental friendly liquid fuel similar to petrol diesel in terms of combustion properties.
With increase in environment awareness and diminishing petroleum reserves, thus it is important to
promote biodiesel as an alternative renewable fuel. In previous studies, Jatropha curcas oil performance
have been analyzed and showed that exhaust gas reduction in diesel engine when mixed with diesel.
Palm oil has good oxidative stability, however, due to substantial amount of saturated fats in Palm, the
Palm biodiesel has poor low temperature properties. Whereas, Jatropha carcus biodiesel has poor
oxidation stability but with good low temperature properties. This research deals with the blend of
Jatropha curcas with Palm oil for an optimum mix in order to achieve better low temperature properties
with improved oxidation stability. The combination could give an additive effect on these two critical
properties of biodiesel.
This research will develop the production of Jatropha-Palm blend biodiesel oil, analysis of Jatropha-Palm
biodiesel oil and the effect of Jatropha-Palm biodiesel to internal combustion engine. Jatropha-Palm
blends could be the substitute for fossil fuel to reduce greenhouse emission and environmental-friendly.
Furthermore, implementation of the usage of biodiesel from Malaysia crops could enhance the economic
growth of the country in the agricultural and oil & gas sector.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Numerous studies in preparation of activated carbon from various agricultural wastes has been reported
in literature. However, there have been little studies on the development of pore size and pore distribution of biomass char during pyrolysis stages. This research is to study the structural features and mechanical properties of bio-chars from the carbonization of various biomass waste in various pyrolizing
conditions and environments to establish their relationships with parameters such as sweep gas compositions that include oxygen and moisture proportions. These parameters are crucial to the properties and
quality of the bio-char in the scale-up plant designed for the large-scale production of bio-char, since a
complete inert atmosphere free from the infiltration of atmosphere air during carbonization of biomass
could not be achieved during carbonization process. Carbonization experiments of selected biomass samples is conducted in a laboratory-scale pyrolyzer which employ various sweep gas composition and temperatures. The bio-char will be analyzed for their physical properties which include pore size and pore
distribution, to develop empirical relations between the bio-char yield and pore size characteristics to
the carbonization conditions. The studies will be extended for comparison between the fuel properties of
waste materials and bio-char products.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Structural Health Monitoring is critical in ensuring safe operation of structural systems. Traditionally, the
sensing mechanisms are based on displacements and strains. Fiber optic is an alternative sensing to use
and has a good immunity to electromagnetic induction. Structural health is mostly related to fatigue
failure under fatigue loading. It is therefore necessary to be able to quantify the fatigue loading using the
proposed sensor. Hence, the objective of this study is identifying the response of the fiber optic sensing to
a variable amplitude fatigue loading. An experiment will be set up that consists of a specimen under
variable amplitude loads measured using fiber optic sensing (fiber Bragg gratings) system. The fiber sensor
will be attached to the specimen with strain gauge also used for comparison and validation purposes. The
outcome of the study will provide the capability of fiber brag sensing to give the loading history and
loading parameters such as maximum stresses, minimum stresses, mean stresses, and stress counting.

Grippers can enhance the performance capability of an automated handling device. They are very flexible
and can be applied to activities such as part orientation, machine loading and assembly. This research
work focuses on the development of a new vacuum gripper for a pick-and-place robotic assembly line in
an electronic manufacturing company that produces relays for local and overseas market. At present, a
mechanical type gripper with parallel finger is used for picking up the relays in an automated relay
production assembly process. Due to inconsistency in gripping all five parts (relays) at a time, a new
gripping method and system are to be proposed so as to be able to hold the parts securely and maintain
its grip. A vacuum gripper with suction cup pad was selected to replace the current method. Several
equipment devices and components such as vacuum generator or vacuum pump, tubing and fitting,
suction cup pads with adapter, and high speed solenoid valve were used. These were selected after
considering the part surface to be grasped, weight of the part, gripper force, number of relays and the
type of vacuum system used. A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is required to operate and integrate
the whole system. Finally, with the introduction of this new vacuum system, it will contribute to
improved line productivity, consistent process time, maintain product quality and reduce manufacturing
cost.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
In view of the Prime Ministers vision and foresight to make Malaysia as one of the most successful
industrial nations in the developing world, the Minister has another challenge and that is to create a
better environment for technology entrepreneurship or technopreneurs in Malaysia. It is the aim of this
research proposal to embed in the facultys new proposed postgraduate-level engineering programme,
the Master of Science (MSc), in Mechatronics Engineering, a realistic training to encourage and develop
technopreneurship of potential postgraduates to enhance their contributions to the economy by
equipping them with the knowledge of the processes and mechanisms by which new ideas can be
commercialized in the market, whether within an organization or as an independent entrepreneur. Even
though, it is not the requirement of the government to have OBE in postgraduate education, but it is
timely for the faculty to embark on this shift towards OBE with integrated entrepreneurship skills and
embed in the new proposed curriculum.
The new curriculum will be designed backwards by first identifying the major outcomes as the focus and
linking planning, teaching and assessment decisions directly supporting these intended outcomes. This
will make the curriculum more directed and coherent in order to produce strategic thinking
technopreneurs who will have the skills to succeed in a rapidly changing global business environment.
This will provide an avenue for our Bumiputra students to compete in the global business area and
emerge as successful future entrepreneurs. The report to this research work summarizes the proposed
programme curriculum (structure and contents), learning outcomes (PEOs and POs), teaching, learning
and assessment strategies that have been compiled and properly considered to ensure the quality of the
programme.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The occurrence of wear in moving parts has been a typical phenomenon specifically in automotive
components such as in engine and transmission system. Many studies had been done previously in this
area as the presence of wear resulted in mechanical components deteriorations, which could lead to
catastrophic failure. It is a necessity that the research in this area should be performed intensely in order to
predict the wear towards establishing a more systematic predictive maintenance (PdM) approach thus
contribute to cost saving in maintenance and downtime of machine components. This research aims to
investigate and determine performance characteristics of lubricant and wear characterization in automatic
transmission (AT) and to propose a more suitable and systematic predictive maintenance (PdM) approach
in promoting a better understanding of wear mechanism. In order to perform this research project,
experimental approach in terms of oil analysis and wear characterization testing are the two important
tools to be commenced via laboratory-experimental works to analyze the automatic transmission fluid
(ATF). This study will observe the suitability of using the ATF beyond the recommended time. By prolonging
the use of oil lubricant may help towards cost saving, less wastage and reduces depletion of natural
resources. This effort is in line with the green concept. Through this study, the performance of the oil in the
intended applications will be assessed and gauged adding to deeper understanding of the rheology of oil
and its interactions with machine materials and performance. This work will be part of the future work on
looking at the potential of aborigine oils for lubricants in machine applications specifically in medicine and
automotive industry. This work could be extended to look other aspects of tribology in lubrication and
machine interactions.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Globally, manufacturers around the world are facing stiff competition with demanding customer seeking
the quality of goods and services with low cost price (Ahmed, 2006 and Wallace, 2007). In order to do that,
manufacturers need to be able to produce products or services in the most economical, cost effectiveness
environment and concurrently capable to produce new products or services with low lead times Taj (2008)
as world class manufacturers (Johnson, 2008).
With all the requirements by customers and the revelation of benefits of Lean Manufacturing System to all
industry are published in a book The Machine that Changed the World, (Womack and Jones, 1990) and
the effectiveness of Toyota Production System, thus objective of this study is to establish a framework
model that will be helpful for automotive industry in Malaysia to implement the Integrated Manufacturing
Initiatives comprise of the following initiatives to improve operations and remain competitive:
i)
Total Quality Management (TQM), which has been claimed of having a lot of benefits in the
industry such as lower inventory cost, increased flexibility, improved quality, reduces waste
and rework, greater motivation of employees, greater process yield, generally improved productivity and increased customer satisfaction (Taylor and Wright, 2006).
ii)
Lean Manufacturing (LM) which represents a unified, comprehensive set of philosophies, rules
guidelines, tools, and techniques for improving and optimizing operations (Womack and Jones,
1991).
Research methodology approach of reviewing related literature of TQM and LM from printed materials
visits and survey on status of (1) TQM and LM implementation and (2) the relationship with performance
measurement in automotive industry will be deployed. Previous appropriate findings and claims made in
previous studies on this matter will be used for comparisons and validation of results and observations as
well as for configuring the new integrated model. Using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and
Excel in order to come out later with Malaysian Integrated TQM and LM framework model which will
benefit many parties in automotive industry. This work is in line with the effort of government agencies
such as SMIDEC (MAJAICO).

This project looks into the tribological aspects of journal bearing operations. The use of ultrasound as a
non-destructive method has been pursued in investigating three important aspects of an engineering
sytem: friction, wear, and lubrication. Previous studies have looked into these aspects but indepently
and mostly in different applications. In this project, an integrated technique will be designed to look at
all aspects in parallel so that analysis is more comprehensive. As far as Malaysia is concerned, this
project focuses on a new area that has not been well established in academic research scenario and
hence is likely to offer further research opportunities in future.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
In this study, implementation and integration of TQM and LM are investigated among Malaysian
automotive vendors. Automotive Industry in Malaysia has been more than 25 years in the market
competition. Yet, there are still much to do in order to compete with competitors especially those
from China which are capable to produce anything at low cost price. In order to remain competitive
and survive in this industry, a new approach can be applied by Malaysia automotive industry which
had been implemented originally by Toyota with its Toyota Production System (TPS)(Ohno,1988)and
later Lean Manufacturing was introduced after a five year, $5 million research project was conducted
by MIT to analyze the world-wide automotive industry in 14 countries in terms of design, markets, and
manufacturing. Preliminary results suggest that TQM and LM were implemented according to the style
and understanding of individual company. A framework model for integrated TQM with LM is needed
to allow a uniform implementation among automotive vendors.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The need for polymer with conducting capabilities as a replacement for metals is emerging in many
applications. Polymer has potential to be used in many applications due to their interesting properties.
Furthermore they can be processed using equipment such as extruder and injection molding
machines. However, polymers are generally not good conductor which limit their potential
applications. Addition of conducting fillers into polymer matrices could enhance the properties of base
polymers. Incorporation of fillers into polymer matrices gives mechanical properties enhancement
potential to the nanocomposites. In recent years, the uses of nanoparticles as fillers in developing a
polymer composite with improved properties have attracted much interest from the research and
industrial community. Nevertheless many investigators more focussed on mechanical and thermal
improvement of composites. In addition to mechanical strength and thermal stability enhancement,
the conductivity behavior of the polymer also could be influenced by the addition of nanoparticles.
The conductivity of behavior of selected nanoparticles could be transferred to improve the
conductivity of the polymer nanocomposites. Therefore, this study is concentrated on the preparation
nanoparticles incorporated polymer composites with the aim to analyze the mixing characteristics and
other issues related to the conductivity enhancement behavior of the nanocomposites. A new more
realistic theoretical model which include the studied parameters shall be formulated and compared
with the experimental as well as existing mathematical models.

AMOUNT OF GRANT (RM) : 7, 000.00

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
The Blended Wing Body known as Baseline-I was started in 2005 in Universiti Teknologi MARA. The
aircraft has 2 meter length and 4 meter wingspan. Since then, several studies had been carried out by a
group of UiTM lecturers on BWB using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel
experiments. They found out the BWB can fly at very high angle of attack. The maximum lift is achieved
at the angle of attack around 34 - 39. However, the wing has stalled at angle of attack around 8, which
is considered too low. A study on the effect of center elevator deflection to the aerodynamics of BWB
Baseline-I was also carried out, using CFD simulations. The result shows that elevator deflection has no
significant effect in terms of lift, drag and lift to drag curves.
Currently, Universiti Teknologi MARA is designing a BWB with canard known as Baseline-II. It has a
simpler platform, broader-chord high-swept wing and slimmer body with a canard (front wing) as a
longitudinal control surface. At the moment the focus of investigation is on the control in longitudinal
mode and to optimize the aerodynamic performance.
The objectives of this proposal research is to investigate the effect of canards to the aerodynamics of
BWB. Various shapes of canard will be modelled through CAD drawing and fabricated. The wind tunnel
tests will be conducted in UiTM low speed wind tunnel as well as CFD simulations. The study will provide
an aerodynamic data of BWB with various shapes of canards. The best canard configuration will be
determined.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
An optimum structural design is a design, which minimize (or maximize) a certain objective function, and
still meets its design requirements. Performing structural optimization by employing measurable design
variables will result in more realistic optimum structures. The final optimum products (component
dimensions) will be obtained and can be used directly for design purposes. For many structures, more
especially in aircraft structures, the objective function normally is weight of structure, while the design
requirements are strength and stiffness among others. These design requirements can be regarded as
design constraints. A structure is satisfactory if design constraints are satisfied, hence structural
responses are within the allowable range. The finite element method can be employed to get the
structural responses in the analysis stage of optimization. In this research, a computer program for truss
structure optimization was developed. For measurable design variable case, the angle profile was used
for structural members. The Linear Extended Interior Penalty Function was used as the optimization
method. Finite element method was used in the analysis stage. The objective is finding a structure with
minimum weight, which satisfies stress and displacement constraints. The computer program has been
validated for truss structure optimization.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
A design is optimum if a certain design objective function is minimum (or maximum), and still meets its
design requirements. This research deals with the development of truss optimization through members
deletion. Truss structures can be optimized by deleting members which do not contribute significantly or
at all to load carrying capacity. Through conventional member size optimization, non performer
members can be identified, and then removed. Strength and displacement were formulated as the
design constraints while the weight of structure was formulated as the objective function. The Linear
Extended Interior Penalty Function was employed to optimize the structure. Finite Element Analysis,
together with an approximation procedure were used to obtain the truss structural responses. Three-bar
and six-bar truss structures were used as case studies. Results showed that the truss disposition could be
optimized using members deletion strategy.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Presently there are interests in the development of in-situ non-destructive sensing and analysis of system
characteristics in the frequency domain for detection of any changes on the dynamic properties which
may indicate, locate and quantify damage or degradation of rotating shafts. Modal analysis method is
widely used in detecting cracks in rotating machinery. The purpose of this study is to design, fabricate
and instrument an experimental test rig that is capable of imitating behavior of transverse cracks on
rotating shafts. Transducers and data acquisition system were integrated to measure vibration signals of
uncracked and various crack configurations of the rotating shafts hence to establish any relationship
between dynamic characteristic and crack parameters. This study also aims to provide a methodology for
crack detection and measurement useful for industrial applications. The test rigs and methodologies
were based on test configurations that simulated transverse cracks on shaft with a single disk and double
disks assembly. The shaft is supported by ball bearings and coupled to a motor by a flexible joint.
Accelerometers, and speed sensors were fixed for collecting vibration responses at a range of shaft
rotating speeds. The experiments showed that cracks influenced the behaviour of the dynamic
characteristic. Some conclusion was taken with regard to the relationship of cracks and the dynamic
behaviour.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
Blended Wing Body (BWB) is a concept where fuselage is merged with wing and tail to become a single
entity. This concept created in order to replace the current conventional aircraft whereby it has higher
lift-to-drag ratio (L/D) compared to the current conventional aircraft. This finding may reduce fuel consumption up to 30 percent. Many studies had been done previously in this area as the presence of aerodynamic characteristics through wind tunnel experiments and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The series of studies should be continued in order to obtain and predict the aerodynamics behavior of BWB in terms of control and stability . BWB is one of tailless aircraft concept where the body has
no horizontal and vertical trail. Hence, the movement of aircraft like roll, pitch and yaw are depends on
the control surfaces attached at the wing like aileron and elevons (elevator + aileron). The objective of
this research is to study the behavior of non-traditional control surfaces like inboard and outboard aileron as a device that responsible to control the yaw movement of the BWB aircraft and obtain aerodynamic analysis from the design. The inboard and outboard aileron is non-traditional control surfaces that
created in order to replace the function of rudder as yaw controller in conventional aircraft. In order to
achieve the objective, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) will be used to simulate the aerodynamics
behavior of non-traditional control surfaces of the BWB model. The results obtain from the CFD simulation will be validated by using wind tunnel experiments approach. This study has beneficial in terms of
great understanding in aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft and also can give good exposure in CFD
approach. The outcome of this project hopefully can give good exposure for other researchers to further

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY :
An optimum structural design is a design that minimizes (or maximize) a certain objective function, and
still meets its design requirements. For many structures, more especially in aircraft structures, the
objective function normally is weight of structure, while the design requirements are strength and
stiffness among others. Normally, the optimization is performed on the size of the structural members.
Performing structural optimization by involving its configurations as variables will offer more flexibility in
the design and also opens up the design space. Mathematical programming is commonly used for
optimization. The genetic algorithm is also an attractive approach due to its capability to deal with
stochastic problems. The genetic algorithm techniques are based on the mechanism of natural selection
and natural genetics.
This proposed research will explore a popular Artificial Intelligence tool, which is Neural Network, for
optimization of frame structure. Stress and displacement constraints will be considered with the
minimum weight as the optimum criteria. A Neural Network is a powerful data modeling tool that is able
to capture and represent complex input/output relationships. The motivation for the development of
neural network technology stemmed from the desire to develop an artificial system that could perform
intelligent task similar to those performed by the human brain. The true power and advantage of
neural networks lies in their ability to represent both linear and non-linear relationships and in their
ability to learn these relationships directly from the data being modelled. Neural networks resemble the
human brain in the following two ways:
1. A neural network acquires knowledge through learning.
2. A neural networks is stored within inter-neuron connection strengths known as sypnatic weights.
