MATERIALS
The required quality of materials shall be certified by Manufacturers certificates or by analysis or tests made at
officially authorized Laboratories. In particular, steel structures shall be marked for identification and
accompanied by adequate documents as per ASTM code relevant to the documentation needed to certify
material, testing, coding, manufacturing and shipping documentation. All materials shall be new and free from
defects.
All members shall be smooth, free of burrs, sharp edges and splatter.
Whenever necessary, straightening and flattening shall be secured by pressure equipment, never by the hot way.
Welding splice of members is not allowed. In specific cases after obtaining ENGINEERS approval it is possible
to do welded splice joints. Full penetration welding for splice members shall be 100% radiographic examined.
Where contact of dissimilar metals will cause galvanic corrosion, a suitable insulating material shall be provided
between the metals.

E. Pipe Columns and Handrail: Pipe for columns or handrail shall be per ASTM A53/A53M Type E or S,
Grade B or ASTM A106/A106M Grade B.
F. Metal Decking: Floor and roof metal deck shall be cold-formed steel sheets conforming to ASTM
A653/A653M or ASTM A1008/A1008M or equal having minimum yield strength of 228 N/mm (33,000 psi).
The metal deck shall be galvanized and receive a protective coating of zinc conforming to ASTM
A653/A653M, G90 Coating Designation.
Structural Steel Shapes shall be in accordance with ASTM A6 / A6M.
Cold rolled steel shapes shall not be used for structural steel fabrication except where used as purlins, girts,
and/or sheeting rails in buildings or where specifically called for on the drawings.
3.2
Bolted connections
All fasteners products shall be furnished with mill test certificates showing full conformance with applicable
standard.
Bolts connecting members supporting vibrating equipment shall have lock-washers or other alternative
tension-indicating device approved by CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT, and shown on the engineering
drawings.
High strength bolt assemblies
High Strength Bolts, nuts and washers shall comply with the requirements of the applicable specification and
shall have manufacturers symbol. Grade marking shall appear on all bolts and nuts.
High strength Bolts, nuts and washer shall conform to:

Steel decks
Steel decks shall conform to SDI (Steel Deck Institute) design manual for composite decks, form decks, Roof
decks and cellular decks floor system with Electrical Distribution.
Galvanized sheet plates for containment of reinforced concrete slabs, shall have minimum thick of 6 mm.

5.1
Structural steel
Steel structures shall be painted as per specification 3814-VW-SG-000001.
Structural steel shall include:
All structural members, column base plates and relevant material for connection;
Service gangways except those directly fastened to equipment, beams for stairs & gangways;
Purlins and girders to support metal roofing and siding unless noted otherwise;
Angles for stiffening and for welding support of checkered floor plates, main and connection beams;
Bracings, knee bracings, posts, hangers, struts, purlins, sag rods and tie rods;
Gusset plates and bolts (including nuts and washers) for structures assembling, steps fixing, equipment
anchoring and steel structures connection to vessels, towers, tanks, etc.;
Equipment guides;
Expansion bolts for connection between structure and concrete supporting structure;
All other materials, also if not expressly listed herein, as necessary to complete the steel structures.

5.3
Design of elements composed of two or more profiles to permit visual inspection and maintenance shall
be adopted. Back-to-back angle (double angle) or double tee construction will not be allowed;
The use of pipe structural members may be accepted in special cases only;
Close ends of pipe and tubular members with minimum 10-gage (4 mm) plate, seal welded to member;
Beams supporting lifting devices shall be marked with the maximum allowable lift load;
The minimum thickness of any part of a structural shape shall be 5 mm;
Minimum thickness of column splice plate 1/2 (13 mm);
Gusset plates and connection material shall not be thinner than the member to be connected, and shall
have a minimum thickness of 8mm (6mm for minor structures).
Connections
Connection materials comprise gusset plates, bolts and every kind of fasteners for structure assembly. All bolts
for equipment anchorage to steel supports shall be supplied with suitable nuts and washers.

All connections that are not detailed or otherwise noted on the design drawings shall be shop welded and field
bolted to allow easy removal of each member.
Bolted connections of structural steel using high strength bolts ASTM A 325/A 325M shall be bearing type
and shall be installed as slip critical, therefore bolts shall be pre-tensioned and the faying surfaces shall satisfy
Class A surface requirements (as per AISC 341-10). Bolts shall be sufficiently long to exclude threads from
the shear plane.
Moreover:

Bolts for fixing equipment connected with steel structural members shall be High Strength type and with 2
nuts.
Beveled washer shall be used for tapered sections (UPN, IPN).
All bolts for equipment anchorage to steel supports shall be supplied with suitable nuts and washers.
Bolts, washer and nuts shall be supplied by the Fabricator with 5% extra to cover losses.
Minimum fillet weld size shall be 5 mm (3/16") for strength welds. Seal welds shall be minimum 3 mm
(1/8") fillet weld.
Beams and columns shall not be spliced, except as shown on the drawings
Tightening torque
All high-strength bolts specified on the design drawings to be used in pretensioned joints shall be tightened to a
bolt tension not less than that given in Table J3.1 or J3.1M of AISC360:
Installation shall be by any of the following methods: turn-of nut method, a direct-tension-indicator, twist-offtype tension-control bolt, calibrated wrench, or alternative design bolt.

Stairs
Access to main equipment or main operation levels shall be by stairways. Stairs shall conform standard
drawing 3814-AI-DU-000004 details for stairs.
5.7
Ladders
Ladders from elevated platforms shall be caged. Where the height between platforms will not permit access to
a full cage, partial caging permitting side entry shall be provided. Side access to ladders is preferred. Details
shall be in accordance with standard drawing 3814-AI-DU-000003 STD details for ladders.
Fixed Ladders and cages shall be galvanized and primer painted as per spec.3814-VW-SG-00001.
Ladders shall be complete with:
Gusset plates and bolts (including nuts and washers) for fastening to structures and equipment;
Safety cage;

Handrail
Handrails shall enclose all platform areas and stairways. Handrails shall be shop prefabricated to the maximum
extent. For details refer to standard drawing 3814-AI-DU-000004 STD for steel work stair, grating, checkered
and buckles plates. Handrails, handrail post, toe plates shall be galvanized and primer painted as per
spec.3814-VW-SG-00001.

5.9
Handrails shall be designed for a minimum concentrated load 0.90kN applied at any point in any direction
on the top rail;
Handrails shall be shop prefabricated to the maximum extent;
All handrail connection shall be made with 16mm dia ASTM A307 bolts unless noted otherwise;
All handrail shall be with a single mid-rail, unless noted otherwise on design drawings;
Handrails shall not be connected to fireproof columns.
FABRICATION
6.1
General
Tolerance requirements for the fabrication and erection of structural steel shall be in accordance with
AISC specification (AISC 303-10 Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges; AISC 360-10
Specification for Structural Steel Buildings), ASTM standards (ASTM A6/A6M Standard Specification for
General Requirements for Rolled Structural Steel Bars, Plates, Shapes, and Sheet Piling), and AWS
D1.1/ D1.1M Structural Welding Code Steel
All Material shall be of New Stock
Fabrication shall comply with relevant drawings, codes, specifications and engineering requirements.
Fabrication shall be carried out at the Subcontractors workshop.
Shop pre-assembly is not required.

6.2
All welding shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code.
Shop Splices, Substitution of member sizes, or changes in details or dimensions shall not be permitted
without written authorization from CONTRACTOR and CLIENT.
All beams, except cantilevers, shall be fabricated with natural mill camber in the up positions.
All re-entrant corners shall be shaped, notched free, to a radius.
Drilling and tolerances shall be as per ASTM standard practice for steel buildings and bridges or
equivalent code.
During fabrication CONTRACTOR and CLIENT reserves the right to carry out checks at the
Subcontractors workshop to verify that the structural members comply with the fabrication drawings and
specifications and the work progress complies with scheduled time. These checks will not reduce the
Subcontractors responsibility.
Crane rail joints shall be staggered and not coincide with rail beam support joints.
Holes shall be provided in the tops of heavy columns for erection shackles.
The size of assembled structural steel pieces may be limited by the permissible weight and clearance
dimensions of transportation.
Handrails, ladders and cages shall be shop assembled to the largest extent possible within shipping
limitations;
Platform and stairways shall be pre-assembled in the largest unit suitable for handling, shipping and
erection;
Subject to approval by the CONTRACTOR, the fabricator shall provide for field connections that require a
minimum amount of field work.
All straight handrails shall be shop assembled in sections, with provisions for filed bolting between
sections.
Ladders shall be assembled and shipped as complete units ready to be bolted to the structures or
platforms in the field. Any ladders that cannot be shipped in once piece because of excessive length, shall
be shop assembled in sections, with provision for filed bolting between sections
All erection bolt holes shall be clean smooth shall be free of burrs. Filed connection items shall be
protected.
Bolting
The thread length of the bolts shall be adequate to ensure that the nuts are entirely engaged.
6.3
Welding
Welding, including details and drawings, procedures, qualification of personnel, consumables, workmanship, quality
testing and inspection, shall comply in every respect with AWS D1.1 .
Parts to be welded shall be carefully prepared and be firmly held before welding to avoid, as much as possible,
warping, buckling and residual stresses.
Prior to start the work a welding procedure should be submitted.
Butt weld noted in the drawings shall be subjected to radiographic examination in the sop.
All welds should be visually inspected. Procedures and acceptance criteria shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1.

6.4
Finishing
Prior to galvanizing or shop painting, all sharp corners, burrs, weld splatter, slag, weld flux, loose mill scale and other
foreign matter shall be removed. All painting shall be applied in shop prior to material dispatch.
Provisions shall be made for inaccessible surfaces after assembly (such surfaces shall be painted before assembly).
Surface treatment shall be in accordance with specifications 3814-VW-SG-000001.
6.5
Inspection
The materials and the fabrication indicated in this Supply Specification are subject to inspection in the field or shop by
a qualified inspector by Contractor. However, such inspection shall not relieve the Vendor of his responsibility to furnish
materials and workmanship in accordance with the Codes and Contract requirements. The Inspector shall have the
option to make, but shall not be limited to, the following types of tests and inspections.
NDE extension shall be checked by Contractor in accordance with spec. 3814-XZ-SW-000003 chapter 7.7.
The table below describes the inspection levels that will be applied to provide a graded approach to surveillance
inspection and indicates the minimum quality surveillance required ensuring the standard of the equipment or material
ordered meets specified requirements.

Inspection
FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL FABRICATION (including beams, columns, ladders, stairs, platforms, handrails,
chequered plate, etc.), INSPECTION LEVEL (RATING) = 3 according to IBC 2009 chapter 17.
6.6
Marking
All steelwork pieces shall be marked in accordance with the following marking procedures.
The mark number shall include all following information (number of digits for each item to be agreed during KoM):
Part 1: structure number (includes area number as well);
Part 2: lot number;
Part 3: piece mark (as per manufacturer standard numbering).
For example the piece mark of beam B5 belonging to lot 1 of structure 30-I-001 should be: 30-I001A-B5.
All mark numbers shall be punched on steel members and they should be stenciled deep enough so that they will
legible after painting or galvanizing.

The unit weight of steel shall be assumed to be 7,850 kg per cubic meter.
The weight of all structural shapes, steel pipe and structural tubing shall be calculated using the nominal
weight per meter given in applicable standards (e.g. ASTM Standards) and the detailed overall length.
The weight of plates and bars shall be calculated using actual dimensions as per shop drawings.
When T-sections are obtained by cutting in two parts H-sections or as built-up sections no additional
costs should be claimed. The weight of sections should be calculated considering half of the nominal
weight of original sections.
When a column has two different surface treatments or masking on its length, no additional costs should
be claimed
No deductions are to be made for material removed by cuts, copes, clips blocks, drilling, punching,
boring, slot-making, milling, planning, or weld joint preparation.
No allowance shall be made for rolling margins or waste.
The weight of weld metal and protective coatings shall be excluded from calculations.
The weight of connection bolts has not to be accounted; it has to be included in the unit price.
