Poulshot Village News

The PVN is put together and distributed free to all houses in the village. Contribu@ons, reports,
opinions and ar@cles are very much welcomed. While we will always aim to include all shades
of opinion and interest, we reserve the right to select and edit where appropriate. Please let us
know of anything that you would like publicised in advance or reported on aLerwards..

Contribu4ons for next issue by the 20th of the month please.

From the (new) Editor
I would like to start by extending a warm and full thank you to Nina Jeeries for all her
hard work, crea@vity and commitment for our village magazine over the past years! I
only hope our family will due it jus@ce!I feel Poulshot is a very special place that has
made our family feel very welcomed in the last 18 months and I can now say I feel at
home for the rst @me since leaving Colorado! It is with this that we (I) take on the
editor post for the magazine.
I do not see this magazine as mine, but as just one part of the village soul that I am
privileged to look aLer for a period of @me. This magazine belongs to Poulshot residents
and needs to con@nue to grow and reect all the diversity of this liOle village. As the
editor I have new ideas of my own as you will see a couple this month and some are s@ll
under construc@on. However, this is your magazine and if it is to stay alive it needs
resident contribu@on from all corners. It needs future events and interests, it needs
hobbies and at @mes people's passion. There is also the prac@cal side of things to
consider and I would ask for all the residents to support the magazine by men@oning
our adver@sers in your personal circles and perhaps men@on our liOle magazine for
future people to place an add or two. It is only this that monetarily pays for our monthly
bit of news that has so far been free to each household.
Going forward there will be a few dierences. Welcome a bit of colour, a liOle bit of
change to the layout, 12 issues rather than ten and a few added items. You will see a
recipe sec@on. Please may I ask for recipe contribu@ons as Giddings Wine in Devizes will
be providing us a monthly sugges@on to run along side our chosen dish and diversity is
the spice of life! I have also introduced a pets corner. Over the year I have come to know
many people in the village through a pet and it would be lovely to have introduc@ons to
several more! We have several new families moving into our village and this is but one
way to become aqua@nted. Please let me know if you are happy for me to feature your
pet and I will send you the brief informa@on that I would like to have.
Your thoughts, ideas and even your cri@c are always welcome news@mypoulshot.com

Poulshot Ladies Reading Group

The group has been opera@ng now for quite a few years and we have
sampled many and various @tles. When we meet, we spend the hour
discussing our reac@ons and happily agreeing, or disagreeing of course, with
the group opinion.
All our books are borrowed from the Wiltshire
Library Service to reading groups across the
county and are loaned for 6 weeks. The only
outlay is a minimal coins in a hat to cover
village hall rent.
On a few occasions we have followed the
Good Read B.B.C. format and brought along
books we would recommend or happily loan to
group members.
Our next mee@ng is on Wednesday, September
23rd at 7.30p.m.! We would love to see new
faces.
The book for this session is The Husbands Secret by the Australian writer
Liane Moriarty.
If you would like to read along with us, contact me on 01380 827046 or e-

Maureens Ramblings..
I recently read of a survey about religious experience that 53% of people who
have had some contact with the church reported that the main reason why
they did not go to church was that they are too busy to aOend. Busy. Its a
word many of us use most of the @mewere too busy, so busy, very busy, or
just plain busy. Weve got work to do, children to raise, mee@ngs to get to,
appointments to keep, gardens to tend, walls to decorate, friends to have
dinner with, families to love and spend @me with. In the survey, these 53%
believe in God; they had had some good experience of the church; they
supported their local church is many
ways; they embraced the beliefs and
aims of the church, but they were just
too busy to get involved with their
local church family.
It seems that the busyness begins with
the teenage years. It is the demands of
school such as homework, school
teams and the need to work on
Sundays to raise money. And how do
you get up on Sunday mornings aLer
those exci@ng Saturday nights!!? And
as we come into adulthood the
busyness can some@mes feel
overwhelming. So easily and so quickly, the habit of church-going is lost and
the idea of spending an hour in the presence of God and of the church family
is just too demanding.
I wonder how the 1.3 million people who do manage to get to church on
Sundays in Britain today manage to juggle all these demands. Maybe it is
because they have decided to give God a place in their lives. Now theres a
chicken and egg situa@on! If God is given a place in our lives, maybe the
demands and priori@es of the rest of our life fall into place and then maybe we
wont be so busy!? Jesus said this himself. Seek rst the kingdom of God and
his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Jesus himself
was very busy, but he managed to order his priori@es. In Mark 1:35 we read
that in the morning, before daybreak, Jesus arose and went out to a lonely
place, and prayed.

Well, maybe not too early God, and maybe not too lonelier a place but I do
want to spend @me with you in my day and especially on Sundays to worship
with my Chris@an family.
I wonder how God feels about our being too busy for him. I wonder how the
church will con@nue to ac@vely serve and support in the community if we are
too busy to be a part of it. I wonder how Chris@an values and our Chris@an
heritage will be protected and interpreted in the 21st Century if we do not
ac@vely seek to value and protect them? If we are too busy for @me with God
then we are just too busy! This is true in all our rela@onships. If you dont
spend @me with your partner or your children, youre going to be
disconnected. So many people seem disconnected from God maybe because
they dont spend @me connec@ng with him. We have to spend @me with God
in order to be close to him, to feel his love, to sense his presence in our lives.
Ah well! Just some rambling thoughts, but challenging nevertheless.

Caf Church
Sunday 6th September at 11.15 at Seend

As the first Caf Church was such a success we are going to hold it every other
month on the first Sunday of the month. The theme in September will be New
Beginnings. You are invited to join us at this new style Benefice service for all the
family, young and old! Our service will start with refreshments at 11.00 and will then lead into an
informal family praise, with age-appropriate activities for the children (drama and making things,
etc). It is hoped that many of the young families in Seend, Bulkington and Poulshot will come
along to join in the worship and fun.

CHANGE OF SERVICE TIMES IN THE BENEFICE

The Churchwardens and Church Councils in Seend, Bulkington and Poulshot have agreed to
change the service times in the three churches from September 2015. Each church will have at
least one service at 9.15, 11.00 and 6.00. It is hoped that these times might be more convenient for
our communities, with more choice for everyone.

Poulshot Ladies Club

In July, thirteen of us, plus 1 friend and
2 husbands, enjoyed a convivial
evening at Pam's house. We enjoyed
some good wine, chilli, salad and
strawberries and cream and lots of
chat. It was dry and became a little
cool as the evening went on but we
were able to sit out in the garden until about 9.30pm. I would
like to thank everyone for coming and for their kind donations. It
was an enjoyable way to pass a "Summer" evening and,
hopefully, we may be able to do it again sometime.

Entertaining Angels

By Richard EvereI
Directed by Merrily Powell

As a vicars wife, Grace has spent a lifeSme on her best behaviour. Now aTer the
death of her husband Bardolph, she can enjoy the new-found freedom of being
able to do and say exactly as she wants. But the return of her eccentric missionary
sister, Ruth, together with some disturbing revelaSons, forces Grace to confront
the truth of her marriage. Can God be trusted to do anything right at all, or is the
whole thing a divine exercise in trial and error.
Set in a vicarage garden in the present day, this sharp-edged comedy with probing
wit was a massive sell-out at the 2006 Chichester FesSval, starring Penelope Keith.

Welcome Edwins Wine Choice

Whitehaven Pinot gris, a delicious, rich, dry white with
complex after flavours of preserved fruits/pear @11.89
at Edwin Giddings
Or
Mandrarossa Viognier, bright gold in colour, intense and
aromatic, it is brimming with sun ripened medlar, apricot
and peaches with a hint of tomato leaf. @9.89 at Edwin
Giddings
Both of these wines would work, with the softer subtle
fruit combining well with the smoked haddock.

WILTSHIRE COUNCILLOR NEWS FROM JONATHON SEED

Like many businesses Wiltshire Council has a
down Sme over the month of August when
many sta take leave to be away with their
children but the core business of the Council
conSnues and August is a Sme when many
Councillors take Sme to think, look at strategies
within their areas of responsibility and generally
take stock of what is happening and where they
can help. My Cabinet responsibiliSes are
Housing, Leisure, Libraries and Flooding and in
addiSon I currently Chair the Melksham Area
Board.
In our community area of Melksham there has
recently been a great deal of chaOer about the
viability of the community campus with a core of doom merchants (including
poliScians who should know beOer) claiming that the Campus will not happen.
This is errant nonsense. It is true that an exercise is currently taking place to
ensure that the campus will be delivered within budget but delivered it will be.
There is a budget of 23million and the rst part of the 7million development
of Woolmore Farm Rugby and Soccer pitches has already started. The rest will
commence next year and it even looks like the Melksham Town Council want to
redevelop the Assembly Hall as part of the project.
I oTen nd that there are issues which arise and seem to complicate
themselves. One of these is waste disposal and in parScular household
recycling where hours have had to be reduced in order to save money. we
asked residents when they wanted to use the sites and so the centres now open
5 days a week instead of 7 and are open from 10am to 4pm. At a number of
these sites, residents have encountered longer queues, in part due to others
arriving well before the opening Smes and also due to the compression of days
and hours. We are conSnuing to evaluate these changes but very oTen arriving
later at the centres oTen results in a very short queue if at all. For informaSon
on the open Smes, please go to hOp://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/rubbish-and-
recycling/household-recycling-centres Finally, any resident sSll wishing to sign
up for a green waste collecSon can sSll do so and now this will be charged on a
pro-rata basis. This can be completed by accessing hOp://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/
gardenwaste or telephoning 0300 4560102.

You will note from the above how reliant the Council is on using internet
technology and I am very aware that not everyone is able to do so. However
help is at hand and a new and free Computer Club in Melksham has been
formed with Digital Champions giving their Sme free to help others . These Club
sessions will help you to learn the basics of computers, tablets and smart
phones. Whether it's turning a computer on, geing to grips with the mouse or
touch screen, learning how to search the Web, email, Skype or shop online, the
volunteers will do their best to help you but this is not for hardware issues. The
Club runs every Thursday 5.30pm - 7pm, starSng on 20th August 2015. It is
important to register rst so someone can be available to help you, please call
0300 456 0100 (quoSng Wiltshire online computer support).
In the meanSme, if you have an issue, please feel free to make contact either
through my email address jonathon.seed@wiltshire.gov.uk or my oce
telephone of 01380 850696.
