EXPECTED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES


By the conclusion of the class, students will be able to:
Define psychologyexplain the history
and present day approaches
Explain and give examples of the research methods used in
psychology
Explain the human central nervous system and endocrine systems and explain how
these affect human behavior and emotions
Understand and explain different states of
consciousness, such as sleep, dreams, meditation, and therapeutic uses of hypnosis
Describe
the value of eyewitness testimony, and the current controversy regarding recovered memories.
Examine what intelligence is, multiple intelligences, emotional quotient, motivation, and
creativity and be able to apply them to yourself
Examine how gender plays a role in personality
development and be able to explain how nature and nurture define our personalities
Explain
and be able to describe the major theories of personality
List and explain the various types of
psychological disorders
Examine and judge the effectiveness of various psychological and
biological therapies
Examine and explain the current research of factors influencing
relationships such as attitudes, conformity, compliance and control, aggression and violence
with an emphasis on gender and culture

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an introduction to the science of human behavior. This course is taught with the
emphasis on student participation. Important topics of study include: humor, stress and
conflict, social influences, research methods, developmental theories, the brain and nervous
system, nature and nurture issues, maturation, emotion, perception, personality theories and
psychological disorders. It encompasses a broad area of research about human behavior,
information that should be available to all high school students who want to understand
themselves and others better. The goal of this course is to create active intellectual and
emotional involvement by the student, not only in learning about the science of psychology,
but in life as well.

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?


Students will gain a better understanding of human behavior by examining how people learn and
develop, how our minds operate, what factors affect behavior and how human behavior and
interaction is affected by society.

Tardy Policy

rocedure to be followed if
TARDY
When a student is tardy he or she will report to the office to acquire an admit slip.
Students will not be allowed to enter the classroom without an admit slip. If a student is
consistently tardy they will be assigned motivational work until the behavior is changed.

ASSIGNMENT/MAKE UP POLICY
Assignments handed in on time are eligible for full credit. Assignments handed in after
the due date, will receive a prorated grade. Assignments are usually due at the
beginning of the class.
Absent - You have the number of days you were absent to make up any missing work.
Please check with Coach Holden to find out what you missed.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
Procedure to be followed when ENTERING THE CLASSROOM
Students will enter the classroom orderly and quietly and sit in their assigned seat.
Students will find their daily class objectives and a bell-ringer on the board which is to
be read and completed immediately.

Procedure to be followed during ROLE CALL


Student are to answer here when their name is called during roll call.
Students will not respond for another student. This behavior will result in

Procedure to be followed if ABSENT


When a student is absent he or she is responsible for acquiring their missed
assignments. Please come to me for the assignment information. Students will have the
same amount of time that the students who were present in class had to complete the
same assignment. If a student misses a test the student must make up the test no more
than three days after their return to school. Chronic absences on test days will result in
essay format test.

Procedure to be followed if

Procedure for INCOMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS:


If less than 80% of an assignment is completed the assignment will be considered
incomplete. The student will earn a zero until the assignment is completed in a timely
manner. All assignments must be completed but the student will not earn a score
greater than 80%.
Procedure for MISSED ASSIGNMENTS:
Missed assignments will treated and addressed as inappropriate behavior .
