CHAPTER 1
Q NO 1: How did Mr. Chips measure his time, when he lived at
Mrs.Wicketts?
Ans: Chips, like some old captain, still measured time by the signals of past;
and well he might because he lived at Mrs.Wickeets house just across the
road from the school. Mr. Chips clearly had sat his time according to the
timetable of Brookfield.
Q NO 2: Who was Chips doctor and what did he say about Mr.
Chips?
Ans: The doctor of Chips was Merivale and he used to say about Chips that
there was really nothing the matter with him. My dear fellow, you are fitter
than I am, Merivale would say, when he called every fortnight. You are
past the age and you had not horrible diseases.
Q NO 3: Describe Mr. Chips interview taken by Wetherby and what
he did advise?
Ans: Wetherby said Mr. Chips, you are a young man and Brookfield is an old
foundation. Youth and age of ten combine well. Give your excitement to
Brookfield and Brookfield will give you something in return. He advised him
to take up a firm attitude from the beginning.
Q NO 4: What do you know about Wetherby?
Ans: In 1870, when Chips joined the Brookfield school, at that tie Wetherby
was principal in it. He was an old man. His attitude was very fatherly and
courteous.
Q NO 5: Describe the scene and atmosphere in the hall when Chips
took his first class?

Ans: As Mr. Chips took his place at the desk on the dais, there was quietness
in the class; the tall clock ticking behind him and smells of ink and varnish;
(the last blood-red rays slanting in slabs-through the strained-glass
windows). A red-haired boy named Colley dropped the desk-lid and Chips
punished him at this by making him stand behind the whole class and by
giving him 100lines to learn by heart.
Q NO 6: Who was Colley and how did Chips punish him?
Ans: Colley was that boy who had dropped a desk lid when Chips took his
first class, and he punished him saying that you have a hundred lines to
learn.
Q NO 7: What did Chips say to the third Colley?
Ans: Mr. Chips said to third Colley, I remember your grandfather; he could
never grasp the ablative absolute. A stupid fellow, your grandfather. And
your father I remember him; he used to sit at that far desk by the well. He
wasnt much better, either. But I do believe my dear Colley you are the
biggest fool of the lot.
Q NO 8: For how much time did Mr. Chips live at Melburry School?
Ans: Chips lived at Melburry School for one year. He had to leave Melburry
because he could not maintain discipline in the class. He was ragged there.
Q NO 9: How did sleep come to Mr. Chips?
Ans: Chips hardly read one page when sleep come to him swiftly and
peacefully and added to his vision. So, his days and nights were equally full
of dreaming.

CHAPTER 2
Q NO 1: Write a note on Brookfield and where was it situated?
Ans: Brookfield was surrounded by elm trees. It was a good school of second
rank. As Wetherby had said that Brookfield was an old Foundation,
established in reign of Elizabeth, as grammar school.
Q NO 2: Describe the reason rise and fall faced by the Brookfield?
Ans: Brookfield was established in reign of Elizabeth as a grammar school. It
might have become as famous as Harrow with better luck. But it could not
famous as other schools. In the reign of the first George, Brookfield became
a famous school. The main structure had been rebuilt and large additions

Q NO 3: What sort of people did Brookfield produce?
Ans: Brookfield produced the history-making men of the age-judges,
members of parliament, colonial administrators, a few peers and bishops.
Mostly, it turned out merchants, manufacturers and professional men.
Q NO 4: Did Mr. Chips realize his short comings?
Ans: At the beginning, it had taken him some time to realize his short
comings. He was not boastful or conceited. Gradually, he had realized.
Q NO 5: Was Mr. Chips a brilliant teacher?
Ans: Mr. Chips was not a brilliant teacher. His degree was not particularly
good. But his discipline through good enough and he was also improving.
Q NO 6: Describe a short history of Mr. Chips as a teacher in
Brookfield?
Ans: In Brookfield, at forty, he was rooted settled and quite happy. At fifty,
he was the doyen of the staff. At sixty, under a new and youthful Head, he
was Brookfield; the guest of honour at old Brookfieldian dinners.
Q NO 7: What was presented to Chips on his retirement?
Ans: On retirement, he was presented a cheque, a writing desk and a clock
as a gift.
