employswhenplayinguptempojazzstandardsintheinteractiveenvironmentofajazztrio.The
essaycontainsaninvestigationofKeithJarrett'smusicalphilosophy,ananalysisof"JustIn
Time"byJuleStyne,transcriptionandanalysesoftwoperformancesof"JustInTime,"as
performedbytheKeithJarrettTrio,andpedagogicalsuggestionsderivedfromtheresultsofthe
analyses.InitialchapterscontainaseventypageexaminationofJarrett'sgoalsandideas
compiledfromoveronehundredsources.Alsoincludedinthedocumentare208pagesof
analysisofJarrett'srecordingsof"JustInTime,"andeightysevenpagesoftranscription.Inthe
finalchapter,theresultsoftheanalysesaresummarized,andpedagogicalsuggestionsare
offered.TheanalysesrevealedthatJarrettfocuseshisattentiononmelodyandrhythminhisup
tempoimprovising.HissolosdevelopvariousmotivicpotentialsofStyne'smelody.Jarrett's
improvisationisorganizedbymelodicvoiceleading,andimprovisedmotivesareelaborated
usingawidepaletteoftechniques.Strongandweakbeatrhythmsalternateduringmelody
statements,enhancingrhythmiccontrast.Overall,Jarrett'smelodicandrhythmiclanguage
containsacarefulbalanceofcompositionalelements.
