Unit 1 – The History of the Family Assignment

Family Timeline
Individual Assignment

PURPOSE: The transition to the diversity of modern families has evolved throughout history. You will
develop a time line to illustrate the transition of the main groupings from hunter-gatherer families to
contemporary Canadian families.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Part 1: Create a visual timeline of families over time to be displayed for the class during a Gallery
Walk. Be sure to label the family group (i.e. hunter-gather) & era, and provide a description.

Part 2: Choose one historical period and write a letter from either a father or mother’s perspective
explaining to his or her children the roles of the family members.

OR Choose one historical period and create a story board (in poster form to be shown to the class)
from the perspective of the mother or father illustrating the daily roles of the family members

Part 3: Create a 1 page handout for the class detailing your chosen historical period (industrial era)
in part 2 and the characteristics of the family group during that era.

Part 4: In 1-2 paragraphs, discuss how the transition of the family over time has moved from an
economic unit to a psychological unit (think about needs & functions of the family).
**If you chose the story board option you are exempt from Part 4
