o antigo ditado que diz que "a prtica traz a perfeio". A excelncia tcnica e
estudo proporciona, alm do completo domnio tcnico do instrumento, o
A rotina do regente solitria,
repetir exausto at que o resultado musical lhe agrade.
Pretende to somente auxiliar o aluno de regncia a

for the conductor who wants to improve

his sight reading and gestures through
more elaborate exercises. Ali the material
was composed during the first two years
o f activities o f our group of conducting
studies. We started our group right after
the end of our graduation studies and
always worked under the supervision and
coaching o f maestro Roberto Tibiri.
For every class, each one o f us composed
one exercise o f at least 20 measures in
length, to be studied and performed with
skill, t1uency and without hesitation. The
exercises were devised sue h as to help us
facing the many difficulties found in the
orchestral repertoire. It has always been
our great concern not to make this book a
mere collection o f mechanical and boring
solfeggio exercises.
The exercises presented here provi de
elements for the overcoming o f the ma in
technical clifficulties found in the practice
o f conducting, like changes o f time
signatures, how to reach and leave a pause
(fermata), performing of cutoff (release)
gestures, cueing instruments and changes

in tempo, dynamics and articulation. In

ou r own experience, we believe they
will enable the student great technical
and musical development. We strongly
advise students to be fully familiarized
with their study before working with a
musical ensemble, as they will allow a
more solid basis for his interaction with
the ensemble. Repetition of each exercise,
until it is perfectly mastered, improves
gestures, makes movements automatic,
enables hand independence and is sure to
provi de accuracy in the processo f reading,
thinking and taking action. By the end
o f the study o f these collected exercises,
the student will certainly have achieved a
new degree o f precision in the conducting
o f his musical repertoire. Thus, we
recommend the study of this material as an
effective practical exercise for the student
of conducting to improve the multiple
technical aspects related to the gestures of
a conductor.
We hope this material turns out to be
as useful to its reader as it h as been useful
to us.

R G CU R A DO POR UM GRUPO C E QUATRO r:.. LU N D S recm-formados
meio desses exerccios.
A proposta
aqui dar continuidade concepo desses dois grandes msicos, fornecendo
material apropriado para o desenvolvimento do jovem candidato regncia.

Introduction
TUDYING A MUSICAL
I N S T R U M E NT C O N F I R M S the
maxim: "Practice leads to perfection".
Musical aml technical excellence can
only be achieved after long years o f hard
individual study and, even after this levei
has been reached, musicians carry on
studying their instruments exhaustively
so that they can keep their skills, increase
repertoire, perfect rendition and lengthen
their careers. Such dedication keeps
musicians on intima te terms with their
instruments, making instrument and
player mingle, or rather, turn into one. In
addition to complete technical mastery
of the instrument, daily study routine
provides the necessary involvement to
make music happen, and that reaches far
beyond m ere technique.
A conductor is an instrumentalist and
his instrument is the orchestra, choir or
musical ensemble. However, a conductor
is not given his instrument often enough
to study and improve one's technique. The
daily routine o f a conductor is lonely- not
unlike other pl aye rs- and this is made
worse by the fact that h e does not have an
instrument. Besides, when he is actually
given an instrumen t, one cannot afford
to make mistakes and repeat an excerpt
exhaustively until a pleasing musical result
is achieved.
The study of conducting is almost
a virtual action, for one imagines an
orchestra and supposes how it w ill react
to each gesture in musical terms. One

a concluso da graduao, sempre sob a orientao e superviso do maestro
Roberto Tibiri.

HE CONDUCTOR'S TASI< IS

this phrase in order to emphasize the
conductor's importance for the group
h eis working with. But "to incite" them,
the conductor must "know the music
h e wants to hear": h e must have an
interpretive vision of the piece, previously
conceived from a detailed study o f the
score. H e must also master the technical
aspects o f conducting, i.e., he must
acquire an internalized and automatic
gestural repertoire, to be used in the
interaction with the orchestra, choir or
other musical ensembles.
Body expression is also o f fundamental
importance for the conductor. Appropriate
posture is a relaxed one, using just th e
necessary energy to perform the intend ed
gestures. Th e conductor must also display
a leading attitude before th e group.
Besides, as his main goal is to incite th e
musicians to play his conception o f the
music, his body expressi o n should be
subjected to this goal, always in search of
clear gestures.

are important to make time signatures and

Another fund?mental element o f the

"

fundamentais do gestual do regente.
antecipao.

No caso do evento musical ocorrer no tempo 2, o gesto
O princpio

out with no hesitation. The solfeggio
o f each exercise must be accompanied
by the performance o f the beat pattern
which corresponds to the notated time
signature. Each exercise should be done
slowly - approximately 6o quarter-notes
per minute- and then accelerated to
at least the doubling o f the tempo, but
keeping in mind that the gestures and the
beat patterns are not the same in both
cases: alia breve in fast tempos, patterns
with subdivisions in slow tempos, always
keeping a regular pulse for the eighth-note.
As the levei of difficulty increases, other
musical symbols will appear in the score,
such as fermatas, accents, articulations,
phrasing slurs, dynamic and tempo
markings. Those symbols must receive the
appropriate gesture from the conductor.

This book provides a collection o f

exercises that will allow the conductor
to practice and improve his performance
of a gestural repertoire present in the
practice of conducting, which includes beat
patterns as well as articulation, dynamic,
tempo and phrasing movements. In
orer to make this study easier, the book
is divided into three chapters which are
organized by levei of difficulty. Before each
chapter there is a set of instructions on how
to perform the exercises. These instructions
are cumulative throughout the book.

Esses signos devero receber

Inicialmente,
ocorre apenas a alternncia entre
compassos simples, depois apenas entre
compassos compostos e, mais adiante,
a alternncia entre compassos simples,
compostos e assimtricos, como s/ 4,
7/4, 9/8 (quaternrio), w/8 e u/8. Os
primeiros exerccios tm incio ttico mas
gradativamente aparecem os anacrzicos e
acfalos. Neste captulo, aparecero ainda
as primeiras fermatas em finais de frase.
This chapter contains 6o exercises, in arder
ofincreasing difficulty, which present time
signature changes with rhythms ranging from
si mp/e to complex. Atfirst, exercises alternate
sirnple meters only, then only compound meters.
Later on, there are simple, compound and odd
meter changes, such as 5/4, 7/4, 9/8 (withfour
total beats), w/8 and n/8. Thefirst exercises
start on the downbeat (thesis), but gradually
exercises starting on the upbeat (anacrusis)
are introduced. Still in this chapter, the first
fermatas at the end ofphrases will appear.

, N T H I S C H A P TE R there are exercises

.,---.,

:L with frequent time signature changes.

These exercises include, in addition to
the most usual meters (duple, triple and
quadruple), time signatures of 5, 6 or more
beats and compound meters o f severa!
combinations. To perform these exercises
correctly, the conductor must always
have in mind the pulse o f the eighth-note,
which is the same both for simple and
compound time. The aim o f this chapter is
the internalization o f the gestures for the
various patterns, combined with rhythmic
accuracy and regularity o f pulse.
Independently o f the style o f
conducting that the student follows,
it must be remarked that the same
exercise performed on very different
tempos demands different patterns, with
subdivisions on slow tempos and alia breve
on fast tempos. Notice the example below:

This measure should be conducted in

three beats, with the first and second beats
having duple subdivision and the thircl
beat, which is the longest, having a triple
subdivision. In this example, the grouping
o f the eighth-notes makes it clear. When
the subclivision is not macle clear by the
score, the conductor must analyze the
measure and choose the beats that will
receive duple anel triple subclivision. We
recommend that the concluctor should

make his own subdivision markings right

above the exercises. Notice that this book
was printed soas to offer considerable
space over the score, which may and
should be used for this purpose, like the
example below:

The beginning o f each exercise is an

important musical event anel every event
of this nature requires a preparatory beat.
This gesture generally occurs on the beat
before the musical event and its main
function isto show the musicians the
musical parameters o f the segment that
follows. In the case o f the beginning of the
exercises in this chapter, its purpose isto
show the tempo only. This gesture should
also be performed when there is a longer
musical segrnent with rests, so that the
returno f the solfeggio can be ma de ele ar.
Finally, every exercise has a final cutoff,
which must be indicated by the conductor
through a preparatory beat. This gesture
should be performecl on the beat just
before the occurrence o f the final cutoff, so
that the exact momento f the interruption
o f souncl is made clear.

L.:. _ c~ , :: ; ~~ ;__ ::, so apresentados exerccios com alternncias freqentes de

primeiro e o segundo tempos tm subdiviso binria e o terceiro, ternria,
ou seja, mais longo. No exemplo, o prprio agrupamento das colcheias j
indica essa subdiviso. Quando a subdiviso no for clara, o regente deve

This chapter comprises 40 exercises in arder of
increasing difficulty which, in addition to time
signature changes, present fermatas on notes,
rests and bar-/ines, accents and staccato marks,
as we/1 as tempo changes with rhythms that
range from si mp/e to complex.

IN 'f R OO U C E O here can cause

difficulties to the performing of the
exercises. Again, it is important to
emphasize that each exercise should
be clone correctly, without hesitation ,
before moving on to the next. Th e main
purpose is the internaliza tion of th e
movements. Sight reading will improve
as a natural consequence of this study,
but it is not its main goal.
The main points presented in this
chapter are: fermatas, accents, stacca ti,
ritardandi, and accelera ndi.
Fermatas fali in to three categori es :
Fermatas on notes: the conductor
mu st "susta in" the sound o f a note
und er a fermata by holding the gesture
on the beat ofthefermata acco rding
to the pattern o f the time signat ure.
Besides, he should also anal yze the
score and decid e whether there is
a cutoff before the continu ati o n o f
the musical discourse o r not. In case
there is not one, the conductor should
simply perform the p reparatory beat
to resume th e d iscourse. !f th ere is a
cu toff, the cond ucto r should perform
its correspondin gpreparatory beat a nd
also indica te the continuation of the
musical discourse right aftcr th e cuto ff
with ano the r prepara tory beat.
Fermatas on rests: first , the co nductor
should perform a preparatory beat
before the cutoff a nd "susta in" the
silence of the pa use by suspending the
bca t pattern on the correspondin g bea t
o f thefermata. To resume the musical
di scourse, the conduc tor should simply
perfo rm the prep aratory beat.

Fermatas on bar-lines: they always

occur after the last beato f the measure.
The conductor should indica te where
to cut this last beat with a preparatory
beat, "sustain" the necessary silence by
suspending the gesture, and indic<Jte
the continuation of the musical
discourse through a preparatory
beat before th e downbeat o f the next
measure, repeating the last beato f the
previous measure.
Some cases require repeating the beat
o f th efermata. Most o f those cases present
the continuation o f the musical discourse
within the same gesture as that of th e
fermata, like the example below taken
from the beginning o f the 3'd movement o f
Beethoven's Symphony No 5:
Allegro

Cello & Bass

In this piece, wh ich is conducted

alia breve, each gesture corresponds to
one measure. The co ntinuation of the
mu sica l discourse must be indi ca ted with
a preparatory beat, repeating th e ges ture o f
the mea sure where there is th efermata.
We remind th e reade r that acco rdi ng
to a stylistic standard o f musica l
in terp retation , almost every fermata is

o prximo. O intuito principal a automatizao dos movimentos. A leitura
no o objetivo principal.
Os principais pontos apresentados neste captulo so: fermatas, acentos,
staccatos, ritardandos e accelerandos.
suspenso do diagrama no tempo dafermta.

preceded by a ri tardando, which should

be indicated by the conductor through
an enlargement o f the gesture. Those
ritardandi are usually subtle and limited to
the last few beats that precede the fermata.
The gestures o f the conductor should
follow the intention o f the staccato
marks, i.e., they should be short and
precise, which is achieved by the use
o f the wrists. Conversely, the gestures
that indicate legato marks should be
rounder and continuous.

Accents can be achieved through

a broad and sudden preparatory beat
applying a larger amount of energy
in its intention.
Ritardandi and accelerandi are two
gradual changes o f tempo which are
achieved through gradual changes o f speed
in performing the pattern. In general, the
gestures are simultaneously enlarged to
call the attention o f the musicians for
these changes.

A retomada
alargamento do gesto. Normalmente, esses ritardandos so sutis e limitados aos ltimos
Ritardandos e accelerandos so duas mudanas graduais de andamento que so
essas mudanas.

Este captulo contm 35 exerccios

em ordem crescente de dificuldade
que apresentam, alm de todos os
parmetros trabalhados nos exerccios
anteriores, variaes sbitas e gradativas
de dinmica e andamento. Os 14 ltimos
exerccios so os mais completos,
incluindo tambm diversas articulaes
e indicaes de fraseados.
This chapter comprises 35 exercises in arder of
increasing difficulty which present, along with
ali the parameters worked on in the previous
exercises, sudden and gradual variations of
dynamics and tempo. The last 14 exercises are
the most comprehensive ones, also including a
number of articulations and phrasing marks.

"'1r'l H I S C H A P TE R introduces dynamics,

~ - gradual changes of tempo and
phrasing elements. lt is the most complex
chapter and the one that resembles
the orchestralliterature more closely.
Th erefore, we present scme quotations so
that the conductor can relate the exercise
to the traditional re pertoire .
T he exercises prese nt a concentration
o f elem ents which are not usually
found simultaneously in the traditional
repertoire. For this reason , the exercises
can be more demanding in terms of
conducting gestures than parto f the
musicalliterature the conductor will work
with. The student can also increase the
levei of difficulty by choosing tempos faster
than those notated on each exercise, to the
exten t that it will be necessary to rethink
th e bea t patterns: for example, in a very
fast tempo, a simpl e duple meter can be
condensed in to just one beat, a quadruple
in to a duple and so fo rth. T his leads to a
m o re complex perfor mance of the beat
pattern s for the compo und and odd meters.
The fi rst exerci se in this chapter illu su ates
thi s kind o f practice well.
Sudde n chan ges o f te mpo and dynamics
should be preceded by prepa ratory
beats that state th e new values clearly.
Con cerning dynami cs, th e ne w va lues are
associatcd to th e size o f th e gesture, whil e
concern ing tempos, th ey are associated to
th e speed of th e gesture. Thism ea ns th at
a piano marking shou ld be preced ed by a
rcductio n o f th e si ze o f th e gesture on the
bea t just before the change o f dynamics; a
sud den change of tempo from allegro to
presto shou ld be precede d by a preparatory

I

beat with the desired speed on the beat just

before the change o f tempo.
Gradual changes o f dynamic$ are
achieved through gradual changes o f the
size o f the beat pattern. We emphasize that
in case o f very fast tempos the conductor
shou ld not increase the gesture for forte
andfortissimo dynamics excessively,
beca use it could cause the pulse o f the
eighth -note to slow down and lead to an
unn ecessary waste o f energy. Gradu a l
changes o f tempo have already been dealt
with in the previous chapter, nevertheless
we mu st add that a ri tardando can bring
the need of a subdivi sion of the bcat
pattern, while an accelerando can lead to
performing the pattern alfa breve.
The exercises with phrasing lead to
greate r hand ind ependence. Phrasi ng
should be perform ed mostlywith left
hand move m ents. wh ich are rel ated to the
m usica l chara cter. Keep yo ur right hand
mostly for beat count in g. The solfegg io
should re nect the art iculation notated
on th e exerci se, whi ch ca n be achi eved
through the use of syll ab les that ind ica te
whet her the no tes are tied , s ta ccato or
lenuto marked etc. Each conductor has his
own speci fie preferences o n this top ic: some
use Ti-a fo r cases o f two tied notes, or Tara -ra -ra ... to illustrate the notes in a lo nger
p hrase. Therefore, we leave the choice of
whi ch formo f solfegg io is m ore appropriate
up to the st ud ent and his teacher.

simultaneamente colocados, so poucas vezes encontrados no repertrio
tradicional.
Dessa forma, as
O solfejo deve refl etir a articulao indicada

beats. The same can be found in Beethoven's Symphony No 1 (First movement, strings,
