General Instructions

3.3 General Instructions to Master/ Skipper against Capsizing

3.3.1 General precautions against capsizing:
The fact that the vessel's stability has been calculated for several conditions of loading in
which the vessel normally operates, and that such calculations have proven that the stability is good and in excess of the IMO requirements, and the fact that the calculations are
checked for approval does not mean that the vessel is now immune against capsizing.
The following measures should be considered as preliminary guidance on matters influencing safety as related to stability.
1. Compliance with the stability criteria does not ensure immunity against capsizing, regardless of the circumstances, or absolve the master from his responsibilities. Masters
should therefore exercise prudence and good seamanship having regard to the season of
the year, weather forecasts and the navigational zone and should take appropriate action
as to speed and course warranted by the prevailing circumstances.
2. Care should be taken that the cargo allocated to the vessel is capable of being stowed so
that compliance with the criteria can be achieved. If necessary the amount should be
limited to the extent that ballast weight may be required.
3. Before a voyage commences, care should be taken to ensure that the cargo and sizeable
pieces of equipment have been properly stowed or lashed so as to minimise the possibility of both longitudinal and lateral shifting, while at sea, under the effect of acceleration
caused by rolling and pitching.
4. The number of partially filled or slack tanks should be kept to a minimum because of
their adverse effect on stability.
3.3.2 Operational Procedures before and in heavy weather:
1. All doorways and other openings through which water can enter into the hull or deckhouses, forecastle, etc., should be suitably closed in adverse weather conditions and accordingly all appliances for this purpose should be maintained on board in good condition.
2. Weathertight and watertight hatches, doors, etc., should be kept closed during navigation, except when necessarily opened for the working of the vessel and should always
be ready for immediate closure and be clearly marked to indicate that these fittings are
to be kept closed except for access. All portable deadlights should be maintained in
good condition and securely closed in bad weather.
3. Any closing devices provided for vent pipes to fuel tanks should be secured in bad
weather.
4. Reliance on automatic steering may be dangerous as this prevents ready changes to
course which may be needed in bad weather.
5. In all conditions of loading necessary care should be taken to maintain a seaworthy
freeboard.
6. In severe weather, the speed of the ship should be reduced if excessive rolling, propeller
emergence, shipping of water on deck or heavy slamming occurs.
Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam Campus (NSDRC)

Page 12

Trim & Stability Booklet of THANGAM

General Instructions

7. Special attention should be paid when a vessel is sailing in following or quartering seas
because dangerous phenomena such as parametric resonance, broaching to, reduction of
stability on the wave crest, and excessive rolling may occur singularly, in sequence or
simultaneously in a multiple combination, creating a threat of capsize. A ships speed
and/or course should be altered appropriately to avoid the above mentioned phenomena.
8. Water trapping in deck wells should be avoided. If freeing ports are not sufficient for
the drainage of the well, the speed of the vessel should be reduced or course changed, or
both. Freeing ports provided with closing appliances should always be capable of functioning and are not to be locked.
9. Masters should be aware that steep or breaking waves may occur in certain areas, or in
certain wind and current combinations (river estuaries, shallow water areas, funnel
shaped bays, etc.). These waves are particularly dangerous, especially for small ships.

A stamped and approved copy of this booklet must be on board at all times.

Notes on Stability

3.4 Notes on Stability

A vessel may be inclined in any direction. Any inclination may be considered as made up
of an inclination in the athwartship plane and an inclination in the longitudinal plane. The
athwartship inclination, called heel or list is transverse stability and the longitudinal inclination, called trim is longitudinal stability. The transverse sections is as shown in Fig.1.
The transverse stability of a vessel is more consequential and important.
3.4.1 Transverse Stability:
For small angles of inclination (heel) of the order of 40 or 50, the waterlines before inclination and after inclination intersect at the same point on the vertical centre line of the vessel,
keeping the emerged and immersed volume of water equal. The centre of buoyancy has
moved off the vessel's centre line as the result of the inclination, and the lines along which
the resultants of weight and buoyancy act are separated by a distance, GZ, the righting arm.
A vertical line through the centre of buoyancy will intersect the original vertical through
the centre of buoyancy, which is in the vessel's centre line plane, at a point M called the
transverse metacentre. For small angles of inclination, the point M, will remain practically
stationary with respect to the vessel's centre line. The distance GM T, when angle of heel is
00, transverse metacentric height (often called "Initial Stability") is used as an index of stability when preparation of stability curves for large angles has not been done.
The position of the transverse metacentre varies with the draft. For a certain draft corresponding to a certain displacement, the transverse metacentric position above the keel
point K, is fixed and is denoted as KMT. The location of the metacentre has neither to do
with the nature nor the distribution of cargo and other weights onboard. On the other hand,
the vertical centre of gravity position above the keel point K, denoted as KG, depends on
the nature and distribution of cargo, oil, water, etc. The centre of gravity position of a vessel loaded with ore would be much lower than when it is loaded with a cargo of cotton. In
short, the centre of gravity of a vessel decreases directly by lowering the position of cargo
and other weights and vice versa.
The transverse metacentric height is given by the relation:
GMT = KMT - KG

......................... [1]

If the displacement of the vessel in the light condition is known, the position of the centre
of gravity KG, can be calculated by taking the vertical moments (weight of the item multiplied by centre of gravity of the item) of all items on board and dividing the sum of these
moments by the total weight, i.e., displacement. Corresponding to this displacement, the
draft is determined and the KMT value obtained from the hydrostatic curves or tables.
The motion of the liquid in a partially filled tank reduces the vessel's stability because, as
the .vessel is inclined, the centre of gravity of the liquid shifts towards one side. This causes the vessel's centre of gravity to move towards the lower side, reducing the righting arm
and thus the stability is adversely affected by the "Free Surface Effect".
The sum of the free surface moments of all liquid items in tanks, not pressed full, is divided by the displacement of the vessel to obtain the Free Surface Correction, denoted as GG0.
The new vertical centre of gravity is denoted as G0 and its position above keel, KG0 is given by the simple relation,
KG0 = KG + GG0

......................... [2]

The transverse metacentric height (corrected) is given by,

G0MT = KMT KG0 = GMT GG0 ...................... [3]
Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam Campus (NSDRC)

Page 14

Trim & Stability Booklet of THANGAM

Notes on Stability

To maintain positive stability, the transverse metacentre must lie above the centre of gravity. i.e., the metacentric height must always be positive and its value must be able to comply
with statutory requirements. In short, it may be said that, while loading, as far as possible,
the heavier weights must be placed in the bottom of the vessel and the lighter weights on
top. This lowers the centre of gravity of the vessel and improves its stability. The only disadvantage of high stability, i.e., high GM value is that, the vessel becomes stiffer in rolling
as the time period of rolling decreases.

Notes on Stability

3.4.2 Longitudinal Stability:

The longitudinal stability of a vessel usually poses no problems as the longitudinal metacentric position is much, much higher than the centre of gravity position. The longitudinal metacentre is similar to the transverse metacentre except that it involves longitudinal inclinations.
Since vessel is usually not symmetrical forward and aft, the centre of buoyancy at various
even keel waterlines doesn't always lie in a fixed transverse plane, but may move forward and
aft with changes in draft. For a given even keel waterline, the longitudinal metacentre is defined as the intersection of a vertical line through the centre of buoyancy in the even keel attitude with a vertical line through the new position of the centre of buoyancy after the vessel
has been inclined longitudinally through a small angle.
The longitudinal metacentre, like the transverse, is substantially fixed with respect to the vessel for moderate angles of inclination if there is no abrupt change in the shape of the vessel in
the vicinity of the waterline, and its distance above the vessel's centre of gravity is the longitudinal metacentric height GML.
3.4.3 Drafts & Trim:
The longitudinal centre of gravity LCG is obtained by dividing the net longitudinal moment
by the displacement. If the longitudinal centre of buoyancy LCB position does not coincide
with the LCG position, the vessel will trim, i.e., the draft at the fore perpendicular Tf and the
draft at the aft perpendicular Ta will not be equal. If the LCG is forward of the LCB, the vessel will trim by forward and if the LCB is forward of the LCG, the vessel will trim by aft.
The total trim, denoted as t, is given by:
t = Ta - Tf = ((LCB - LCG) x / (100 x MCT1cm) ................. [4]
Positive t implies trim by aft and negative t implies trim by forward. The LCB, LCF and
MCT1cm (moment to change trim by 1 cm) are all obtained from the Hydrostatic Curves or
Tables.
The drafts at the perpendiculars are given by the algebraic relation:
Ta = T + (t/LBP) x LCF

..................... [5]

Tf = T - (t/LBP) x (LBP - LCF)

...................... [6]

LCF is to be taken negative, when it lies forward of midship and positive when it lies aft of
midship. The position of LCG depends on whether the weights are placed more concentrated
in the forward or aft of the vessel, in which case the vessel will trim by forward or aft, respectively. Hence, the distribution of cargo, oil, fresh water and ballast water must be so done so
as to keep the trim as little as possible. It must be noted that if it is not possible to avoid trim,
then trim by aft is more recommendable than trim by forward. In the departure condition the
trim, if present, must be, as far as possible, by aft. Ballast water may be taken in suitable tanks
to correct the trim, even if it results sometimes in a little loss in GM or increase in KG, due to
free surface effects or high location of the tank.

Notes on Stability

3.4.4 Cross Curves of Stability:

These curves show the variation of the righting arms GZ with displacement and are drawn for
various angles of inclination, each curve being drawn for a particular angle of inclination.
When these curves are drawn for a fixed value of the vertical centre of gravity position, they
are called GZ- Curves. When the vertical centre of gravity is assumed to be zero, these curves
are called KN Curves and the same are used to derive the statical stability curve.
When the angle of inclination exceeds small angles, 40 or 50, the intersection of the vertical
through the centre of buoyancy in the inclined condition with the centre line of vessel, point
M can no longer be regarded as a fixed point relative to the vessel.
The quantity GM, is no longer a suitable criterion for measuring the stability of the vessel and
it is usual to use the value of the righting arm GZ for this purpose. The cross curves of stability provide a means of presenting the righting arm GZ for any probable value of displacement
and for several angles of heel. The cross curves of stability depends on the geometry of the
vessel and is independent of the loading of the vessel.
3.4.5 Statical Stability Curve:
A curve of righting arm GZ to a base of angle of inclination for a fixed displacement is known
as a "curve of statical stability" and such a curve is obtained from the set of cross curves. The
curve of statical stability rises steadily from the origin and for the first few degrees is practically a straight line, after which it becomes a curve which may have a point of inflexion
changing from concave upwards to concave downwards. It eventually reaches a maximum
value, after which it declines and eventually crosses the base line. The righting arm before or
after correction for free surface effects is designated GZ or G0Z respectively. The relation to
obtain the righting arm at a particular displacement and angle of inclination is given by:

GZ = KN KG sin - TCG cos

............................... [7]

G0Z = KN KG0 sin - TCG cos

............................... [8]

It can be shown that the tangent to the statical stability (corrected) curve at the origin intersects the vertical erected at 57.300 (1 radian) at a value same as the initial metacentric height
(corrected), i.e., G0MT. This can be used as a guide to plot the statical stability curve at low
values of angle of inclination.

Notes on Stability

3.4.6 Dynamic Stability Curve:

The dynamical stability of a vessel at a given angle of heel is defined as the work done in
heeling the vessel to that angle very slowly and at constant displacement, i.e., ignoring any
work done against air or water resistance. The dynamical stability at any angle of heel is proportional to the area under the statical stability curve.
The dynamical stability can be calculated by integrating the statical stability curve upto certain angles of inclination.

Notes on Free Surface Correction

3.5 Notes on Free Surface Correction

When a tank is completely filled with any liquid and no movement of the liquid is possible,
the effect on the ship's stability is precisely the same as though the tank contained some solid
material. But as soon as some quantity of liquid, however small, is withdrawn from the tank,
the situation changes completely and the stability of the ship is adversely affected by what is
known as the "Free Surface Effect". This adverse effect on the stability is referred to as a Loss
of GMT or as a Virtual Rise in KG value. This correction for GMT and KG values is known as
the "Free Surface Correction".

Free Surface Correction, GG0

or Loss of GMT

= [Transverse Moment of Inertia of Tank (TMI tank) x

Density of Liquid in Tank (tank)]/Displacement ()

Below are enlisted some ways of avoiding/reducing free surface effects, which masters must
take into consideration:
(a)
In any condition, when one or more tanks are filled with ballast water, these tanks
must be fully pressed up, throughout the voyage, as this eliminates unnecessary free surface
effects.
(b)
No more than one set of tanks, i.e., Port and Starboard, may be ballasted partly, unless
it is imperative to have more than one set of ballast tanks slack.
Bunkers& Fresh water should be drawn from one respective tank at a time, so that other tanks are maintained in the pressed up condition.

3.6 IMO General Intact Stability Criteria

The vessel is required to comply with the general intact stability criteria laid down in International
Maritime Organisation (IMO) resolution A.749 (18), chapter 3, paragraph 3.1
1. The area under the righting lever curve (GZ) curve should not be less than 0.055 meter- radians up
to 30 angle of heel and not less than 0.09 meter-radians up to 40or the angle of down flooding qf*
if this angle is less than 40 .Additionally , the area under the righting lever curve (GZ) curve between the angles of heel of 30 and 40 or between 30 and qf , if this angle is less than 40 , should
not be less than 0.03 meter-radians.
qf*

is an angle of heel at which openings in the hull , superstructures or deckhouses

which cannot be closed weathertight immerse. In applying this criteria, small openings through which progressive flooding cannot take place need not be considered as
open.

2. The righting lever GZ should be at least 0.2m at an angle of heel equal to or greater than 30.
3. The maximum righting arm should occur at an angle of heel preferably exceeding 30 but not less
than 25 .
4. The initial metacentric height GMo should not be less than 0.15m.
5. The angle of heel on account of crowding of passengers to one side of the ship should not exceed
10o.
6. The angle of heel on account of turning should not exceed 10o.

3.7 IMO Weather criteria

Severe wind and rolling criterion (IMO Weather Criterion) as per IMO Resolution A.749(18), Chapter 3,
Para 3.2.
The ability of a ship to with stand the combined effects of beam wind and rolling should be demonstrated
for each standard condition of loading, with reference to the figure as follows:
1. The ship is subjected to a steady wind pressure acting perpendicular to the ships centreline, which results
in a steady wind heeling lever (lw1).
2. From the resultant angle of equilibrium (0), the ship is assumed to roll owing to wave action to an angle
of roll (1) to windward. Attention should be paid to the effect of steady wind so that excessive resultant
angles of heel are avoided *.
* The angle of heel under action of steady wind should be limited to a certain angle to the satisfaction of
the Administration. As guide, 16 or 80% of the angle of deck edge immersion, whichever is less, is suggested.
3. The ship is then suggested to a gust of wind pressure, which results in a gust wind heeling lever (lw2).
4. Under these circumstances area B should be equal to or greater than area A.
5. Free surface effects should be accounted for in the standard conditions of loading .

Fig. 4 Severe wind and rolling

The angles in the above figure are defined as follows:
0

Angle of heel under action of steady wind.

Summary of Loading Conditions

STABILITY CALCULATIONS

6.1 Assumptions
Stability calculations have been performed using MAXSURF Integrated Naval Architecture and
Ship Construction Software Package by Formation Design Systems Pvt Ltd , Australia . The hull is
generated with the existing lines plan. The tank definition, weight distribution, loading particulars
and other required information have been input from the references given by the owner.
All the loading condition calculations have been performed considering the following
stability options:
Vessel is assumed to float in calm water.
Density of sea water = 1.025 t/m3.
KN values calculated with free and fixed trim.
Correction of free surfaces considering heel & trim.
Equilibrium water plane calculated with heel & trim.
Passenger, Officers & Crew weights have been assumed to be 100 Kgs (0.1 tonne)
each.
Spare propeller & shaft has been shown as a separate item in all loading conditions
except lightship condition(LC01)
All Passengers, Officers & Crew are assumed to be standing in their respective locations.

Limiting KG Analysis

LIMITING KG ANALYSIS

7.1 Maximum Allowable KG (KG-Max)

The limiting KG analysis may be used to obtain the highest vertical position of the
centre of gravity (maximum KG) for which the selected stability criteria are just passed.
This may be done for a range of vessel displacements of which the loading conditions
displacements are also comes in this range where the large angle stability criterion are
checked. At each of the specified displacements , Hydromax (Maxsurf) runs several
large stability analysis at different KGs . The selected criteria are evaluated ;the centre
of gravity is increased until one of the criteria fails .

7.2 Assumptions
1. Range of displacements to be analyzed - In this analysis a displacement range of 1000
tons to 11000 tons are considered .
2. Range of heel angles to be analyzed It is taken exactly as per the conditions considered
for KN values analysis ,that is, 0 deg to 30 deg with an interval of 5 deg , 30deg to 40
deg with an interval of 10 deg and 40 deg to 80 deg with an interval of 20 deg .
3. Trim (fixed or free ) In this analysis a range of fixed trims starting from -0.4 m to 1.6
m with a definite interval of 0.2 m are considered .
4. Stability criteria for which limiting KG is to be found In this analysis the stability
criteria considered is IMO A 749(18) Code on Intact Stability ,under which all sub criterions A749(18) CH3 Design criteria applicable to all ships.
5. TCG In this analysis TCG taken as zero

7.3 Methodology

The limiting KG analysis is done for each trim conditions for above given range of
displacements for all IMO stability criterion. The program runs to give tabulated
results indicating which stability criteria limited the VCG . These are called as
maximum permissible KG (KGP) for each trim and the range of displacements and heel
AGraph of KGP (In fact it is GZmax because GZmax =KN KGmax Sin) plotted against
vessel displacements for each of the trim cases .
Out of the KGPs tabulated for various IMO criterions against each Trim conditions for
a given range of vessels displacements and heels , the Minimum value of the KGP
for each displacement condition are tabulated and is plotted against the range of
displacements ,is the finial limiting KG curve of the vessel in Intact conditions .
The KG of the vessel corresponding to displacements at various loading conditions
analyzed are also plotted in the curve and it is always comes in the safe zone of the
Intact limiting KG curve .

Limiting KG Analysis

The maximum allowable centre of gravity has been calculated for various criteria as
follows
1. Limiting KG - Damage Case Intact
2. Specific gravity = 1.025; (Density = 1.025 tonne/m^3)
3. Heel to starboard; heel range: from 0 deg to 30 deg in steps of 5 deg; to 40 deg in steps of
10 deg; to 80 deg in steps of 20 deg.
