Position:
Lab Technician
Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics Unit

Working Location:
Onna-son, Okinawa, Japan

Position responsibilities:
The Micro/Bio/Nanofluidics unit in OIST invites applications for a lab technician position. We
are looking for energetic, team-oriented individuals to support the unit operations, which
covers a broad range of interdisciplinary research activities ranging from microfluidics,
polymer chemistry, and biotechnology.

Basic responsibilities involve:
1. Set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain instruments.
2. Train unit members to use existing apparatus.
3. Design and build simple table-top experiments, in conjunction with other unit
members.
4. Order and stock consumables, while ensuring that accurate records are kept and
following the safety regulations
5. Interact effectively with vendors for small and large equipment purchases.

6. Handle day-to-day operations required to keep lab running smoothly.


7. Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization.


Qualifications:
(Required)
1. B.S degree in Machine design, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Experimental Physics, Chemistry, or a related discipline
2. Experience with machining, mechanical tools, and electrical circuits
3. Some experience with optical microscopy and optics
4. Technical laboratory skills and practical experience.
5. Ability to learn new skills and learn to operate unfamiliar instruments
6. Ability to communicate with/between vendors, facilities and IT divisions within OIST,
and collaborate effectively with unit members
7. Ability to adapt to local culture and rapidly changing work environment
8. Strong English communication skills are necessary. Knowledge of Japanese
would be beneficial, but is not required for the position.

(Preferred)
1. Experimental background in Microfluidics, MEMs
2. Basic level of Japanese

Term:
Full-time, fixed term appointment for 1 year in the first instance with the possibility of
renewal. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive).

Working hours:
9:00-17:30 (Discretionary)
