Rabbis Message

A New Book for a New Year

Yes, its a different photo in this message. It's only for this month, and then we will go
back to the other one, which I happen to like. But this one particularly gives me a chance to
show off my copy of the two-volume machzor for the High Holy Days, MISHKAN
HANEFESH - "Sanctuary of the Soul" - newly published by the Central Conference of
American Rabbis. The gold volume is for Rosh Hashanah and the silver for Yom Kippur, of
course, to avoid confusion on the book racks! By unanimous vote of our Board of Trustees,
our congregation will join hundreds of Reform congregations throughout North America this
year in inaugurating this machzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. A machzor, as we
will recall, is a prayer book. Deriving from the root ch-z-r, meaning "to return," the machzor
is the prayer book specifically for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, since they return year in
and year out. As we further recall, the term for the prayer book of Shabbat, weekdays and Festivals is siddur,
deriving from the root s-d-r, meaning "order," as in a specific order of prayers.
Why a new machzor? Was there anything particularly wrong with GATES OF REPENTANCE, the machzor
that we had been using since the 1970's? No! Its a wonderful book! But, in fact, it was written in the 1970's,
fully a generation ago, and then some. Our community has undergone a dramatic transformation since that
time, and our machzor ought to reflect that. That, of course, was the same motivation that drove the creation
of GATES OF REPENTANCE, a project overseen by our beloved Rabbi Emeritus, Dr. A. Stanley Dreyfus, z"l.
The predecessor of GATES OF REPENTANCE, THE UNION PRAYER BOOK II, had been written before the
Shoah and birth of the State of Israel. It was written before the birth of the Baby Boomers, who were just
coming of age in the 1970's. Hebrew Union College had just begun requiring all its Rabbinic students to
spend their first year at its newly-inaugurated Jerusalem campus in the 1970's, and the effects were already
being felt within the community. In our own time we acknowledge more monumental changes in Jewish life:
our relationship with Hebrew language, our music and worship styles, political and philosophical trends,
gender-sensitive and sexual preference vocabulary, and even the people who attend our congregations and
the religious backgrounds and life experiences they bring with them. It stands to reason, then, that our new
machzor should reflect this diversity and inclination toward inclusiveness that Reform Judaism now encompasses.
Like many of our sister congregations, we participated in the process of piloting several of the services within
this machzor, subsequently submitting our thoughts to the CCAR Editorial Committee. In fact, never before in
the history of liturgy has the development of a prayer volume included such extensive input from so many
people as did the creation of MISHKAN HANEFESH. We will have a chance for a bit of debriefing at Fourth
Friday on September 25.
Of course, it will take a number of years for us to fully explore the richness of this machzor. We have made
various decisions for this year as to what we will include and what we will leave for another time. Learning
one's way around a new siddur or machzor is always a challenge, and in this case, a particularly welcome one.
We can take comfort in knowing that we have plenty of time ahead of us, God willing, to enjoy this challenge.
And, in a generation from now, the heirs of our tradition will find themselves with the challenge of writing a
new machzor for the realities of the Jewish community of their own time. And we wish them well!
Union Temple has purchased enough copies of MISHKAN HANEFESH for our congregants and visitors.
These volumes will remain on the racks at the temple throughout the Holidays. We hope that all of you will
want to contribute one or more of these 2-volume sets in honor or in memory of someone, or simply as a gift
(Continued on page 3)

from yourself. Each set is $50. A

beautiful bookplate with the
temple's new logo will be drawn
up and added immediately to
each book that you dedicate.
Please submit a check to the
Temple Office along with your
dedication, and I will do the same.
I look forward to exploring this new
liturgy along with you, and express
my hope that it will both challenge
and comfort all of us in the season
of teshuvah - the season of Return.
And as always, from Stephen,
Philip and myself, L'shanah
tovah tikateivu v'teichateimu:
May you be inscribed and sealed
in the Book of Life for blessing,
life, and peace.

A New Look

Welcome back after what I hope has been a relaxing and refreshing summer.
As you see from the front of this Bulletin, were beginning the year
5776 as well as the Temple year with a fresh look.
Union Temple has a new logo. This was designed professionally, the result
of an exhaustive process over many months and several iterations. In the
end we came out with a clean, modern design, which will reproduce well
in all media. We particularly like the lines under the UT, reminiscent of the
traditional tallit worn at services. Youll see the new logo on our
letterhead, email blasts, fliers and service announcements, along with
new templates reflecting the look and feel of the logo.
Kudos to Vice President Ellen Kolikoff and long time member
Denise Waxman for their time, effort and persistence in getting
the logo designed, approved and into circulation. More upgrades are
in the works. Stay tuned.

Sisterhood

Make Plans for a Special Beginning of the Year

Its September again, and those long, lazy days of summer are slipping into the cool, crisp days of autumn. Time
to get ready for our new year with its promise of renewal and its excitement of fresh beginnings. Sisterhood will
be adding to that excitement with an exhilarating new season, and we hope that you are rested and ready to join
us for all of our stimulating programs.
Well launch our season on Sunday, September 27, at 10 AM, with our popular getting-to-know-you icebreaker
breakfast. Well be munching and brunching, renewing old friendships and making new ones. Well be telling
you our ideas for future programs and asking you for yours. There will be an exciting Mystery Raffle too. So
dont miss out. It just may be your lucky day!
Next, we have a very special trip planned to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of the
concentration camps at the end of World War II. On Wednesday, October 21, at 11:30 AM, we are visiting
the new Anne Frank Center in Lower Manhattan. Anne Frank and Her Times, with a Guest Speaker, the
museums remarkable ninety-minute presentation, includes the film, The Short Life of Anne Frank, and a talk
with a Holocaust survivor. We hope you will be with us for this extraordinary program. The cost is only $10 per
person, and it is open to husbands and friends too. You must book in advance, though. If you are interested, please
call Gail Levine-Fried, 718-338-6123, as soon as possible. When we leave the museum, many of us will be going
to the nearby, historic Woolworth Tower Kitchen for a separate-checks lunch. You can find its menu at
www.thewoolworthtowerkitchen.com/menu.html. Please let Gail know if you would like to join us for that too.
Watch this space and your mail
for more information about all our
programs. Every one of them is
guaranteed to delight and inspire
you. We hope youll be with us for
them alland as a member. If
you have not yet renewed your
membership, please do so
promptly, and if you are not yet a
Sisterhood member, we hope you
will join us now. Its as simple
as writing a check for $40 to
Sisterhood of Union Temple. It
takes just a moment, and its a
beautiful and easy way to perform
the mitzvah of bringing hope and
help where they are needed by
adding your voice, your heart, and
your hands to ours, as together
we reach out to perform tikkun
olam.
Sisterhood wishes everyone a
happy, healthy, successful, sweet
New Year. May 5776 be a year of
peace in our hearts and our
homes, in Israel and all the world.
Lshanah Tova!

Brotherhood

Its Sukkah Building Time!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a relaxing summer.

Im helping to organize ushers for the High Holy Days, and I invite everyone not only Brotherhood! to
volunteer. Please email me at stevenmarkleo@gmail.com, or contact the Temple office, to let me know
when you would like to volunteer Rosh Hashanah evening or morning, Kol Nidre evening, Yom Kippur
morning or early afternoon or late afternoon. And we are planning a thank-you brunch for our volunteer ushers
in October!
The first Brotherhood activity of the year will be our fun tradition of assembling the sukkah. Well be doing that
on Sunday morning, September 27, at 10 AM with bagels and coffee, of course just in time for the Sukkot
celebration that evening.
And planning ahead, on Sunday morning, November 8, I will be leading a book discussion about A Backpack, A
Bear, and Eight Crates of Vodka by Lev Golinkin. The Jews of the former Soviet Union have become so much a
part of Jewish life here in Brooklyn that a discussion book about them is long overdue. The author writes of his
childhood in Ukraine, the familys difficult journey from there to here when he was nine, and the adjustments to
life in America. And in the end, you will see that it is the story of a Jewish journey in more ways than one.

THE SHALOM MEDITATION CIRCLE

Wednesday, September 16, 5:30-6:30 PM
Focus: Opening our Hearts to Greater Compassion; Healing with AHAVAH (LOVE)
As we move towards Yom Kippur in our New Year cycle, we want to open our hearts to greater
compassion for ourselves and for others. Self-acceptance without harsh judgment and negative
evaluation means that we can honestly love ourselves, warts and all, and love others in spite of
any perceived imperfections. Opening to Compassion and Love promotes Healing in the sense
of Wholeness that emerges from Wellness and Well-Being.
Join us on Wednesday, September 16 for our SHALOM MEDITATION CIRCLE as Dr.
Robert Fried guides us in some healing Qi Gong. This ancient Chinese practice has been
incorporated into Western approaches to integrative healthcare.
Experience the soothing and profound sound vibrations produced by the Crystal Heart
Bowl as we tone SHALOM into deeper levels of our Being.
Chant and sing Hebrew songs of Comfort and Renewal accompanied by gentle guitar strumming.
As we become more open and more receptive, Dr. Gail Levine-Fried will lead us in an AHAVAH Meditation, of
gathering the love all around us and sharing that love. We will recite The Meditation on Lovingkindness and close our
session with peaceful chanting of a melody from our own Jewish tradition.
The SHALOM MEDITATION CIRCLE will open your Heart and strengthen your Nefesh (i.e. Spirit). Join us on
September 16 for a peaceful, healing and renewing experience. There is no fee for the session and it is open to all.
Dr. Gail Levine-Fried, longtime Temple member, Stress Management Instructor and Registered Yoga Teacher, facilitates
the SHALOM MEDITATION CIRCLE.
