History of Brunei, 1800-1967
Answer Question 1 and one other question from this section.
Read the extracts and then answer the questions which follow.

Sultan Hashim Aqamaddin and the Protectorate Agreements, 1888 and 1905-6
Extract

A: lBBB British Brunei Protectorate Treaty

Sultan Hashim Aqamaddin was determined to stop further losses of land. So in

1BB7 he appealed to the British for support and in lBBB he signed the Protectorate
Agreement. He expected help from the British if he had problems. Britain's purposes
in signing the Treaty were different to Hashim's, being mainly concerned with
preventing other European countries becoming involved in Brunei.
Extract B: 1905-6 Supplementary Agreement

When Britain failed to act after Limbang was seized, Sultan Hashim felt that he had
been cheated and Britain was not keeping its promises. Sarawak and the British
North Borneo Company continued to expand at Brunei's expense. All the Sultan's
efforts to get Limbang back failed and further problems arose when there were
disorders among the people of Belait and Tutong.

10

Then the British government sent J.S. McArthur to investigate the situation and
report. After receiving his report, Sultan Hashim agreed to sign the Supplementary
P
