Sultan Hashim Aqamaddin and the Protectorate Agreements, 1888 and 1905-6
Extract
When Britain failed to act after Limbang was seized, Sultan Hashim felt that he had
been cheated and Britain was not keeping its promises. Sarawak and the British
North Borneo Company continued to expand at Brunei's expense. All the Sultan's
efforts to get Limbang back failed and further problems arose when there were
disorders among the people of Belait and Tutong.

Then the British government sent J.S. McArthur to investigate the situation and
report. After receiving his report, Sultan Hashim agreed to sign the Supplementary

rotectorate Agreement.
