Tigran"duetohisalmostimpenetrabledefensiveplaying
style,whichemphasisedsafetyaboveallelse.[1][2]
PetrosianwasaCandidatefortheWorldChampionship
oneightoccasions(1953,1956,1959,1962,1971,1974,
1977and1980).HewontheWorldChampionshipin
1963(againstMikhailBotvinnik),successfullydefended
itin1966(againstBorisSpassky),andlostitin1969(to
Spassky).ThushewasthedefendingWorldChampion
oraWorldChampionshipCandidateintenconsecutive
threeyearcycles.HewontheSovietChampionshipfour
times(1959,1961,1969,and1975).
Petrosianiswidelyknownforpopularizingchessin

PetrosianwasborntoArmenianparentsonJune17,1929inTiflis,GeorgianSSR(moderndayGeorgia).[6]
Asayoungboy,Petrosianwasanexcellentstudentandenjoyedstudying,asdidhisbrotherHmayakand
sisterVartoosh.Helearnedtoplaychessattheageof8,[7]thoughhisilliteratefatherVartanencouraged
himtocontinuestudying,ashethoughtchesswasunlikelytobringhissonanysuccessasacareer.[8]
PetrosianwasorphanedduringWorldWarIIandwasforcedtosweepstreetstoearnaliving.[6]Itwas
aboutthistimethathishearingbegantodeteriorate,aproblemthatafflictedhimthroughouthislife.Ina
1969interviewwithTimemagazine,herecalled:

Istartedsweepingstreetsinthemiddleofthewinteranditwashorrible.Ofcoursethere
werenomachinesthen,sowehadtodoeverythingbyhand.Someoftheoldermenhelped
meout.Iwasaweakboy.AndIwasashamedofbeingastreetsweeperthat'snatural,I
suppose.Itwasn'tsobadintheearlymorningwhenthestreetswereempty,butwhenitgot
lightandthecrowdscameoutIreallyhatedit.Igotsickandmissedayearinschool.We
hadababushka,asisterofmyfather,andshereallysavedme.Shegavemebreadtoeat
whenIwassickandhungry.That'swhenthistroublewithmyhearingstarted.Idon't
rememberhowitallhappened.Thingsaren'tveryclearfromthattime.[9]

HeusedhisrationstobuyChessPraxisbyDanishgrandmasterAronNimzowitsch,abookwhichPetrosian
wouldlaterclaimtohavehadthegreatestinfluenceonhimasachessplayer.[8]HealsopurchasedTheArt
ofSacrificeinChessbyRudolfSpielmann.TheotherplayertohavehadanearlyeffectonPetrosian'schess
wasJosRalCapablanca.[8]At12yearsold,hebegantrainingattheTiflisPalaceofPioneers[7][10]under
theauspicesofArchilEbralidze.EbralidzewasasupporterofNimzowitschandCapablanca,andhis
scientificapproachtochessdiscouragedwildtacticsanddubiouscombinations.Assuch,Petrosian
developedarepertoireofsolidpositionalopenings,suchastheCaroKannDefence.[8]Aftertrainingatthe
PalaceofPioneersforjustoneyear,hedefeatedvisitingSovietgrandmasterSaloFlohratasimultaneous
exhibition.[7][10]
By1946,PetrosianhadearnedthetitleofCandidateMaster.Inthatyearalone,hedrewagainst
GrandmasterPaulKeresattheGeorgianChessChampionship,thenmovedtoYerevanwherehewonthe
ArmenianChessChampionshipandtheUSSRJuniorChessChampionship.Petrosianearnedthetitleof
Masterduringthe1947USSRChessChampionship,thoughhefailedtoqualifyforthefinals.[10]Heset
abouttoimprovehisgamebystudyingNimzowitsch'sMySystemandbymovingtoMoscowtoseek
greatercompetition.[7]

GrandmasterinMoscow
AftermovingtoMoscowin1949,Petrosian'scareerasachessplayeradvancedrapidlyandhisresultsin
Sovieteventssteadilyimproved.Heplacedsecondinthe1951SovietChampionship,therebyearningthe
titleofinternationalmaster.ItwasinthistournamentthatPetrosianfacedworldchampionBotvinnikfor
thefirsttime.PlayingWhite,afterobtainingaslightlyinferiorpositionfromtheopening,hedefended

qualifiedhimfortheInterzonalthefollowingyearinStockholm.HeearnedthetitleofGrandmasterby
cominginsecondintheStockholmtournament,andqualifiedforthe1953CandidatesTournament.[12]
Petrosianplacedfifthinthe1953CandidatesTournament,aresultwhichmarkedthebeginningofa
somewhatstagnantperiodinhiscareer.Heseemed
contentdrawingagainstweakerplayersand
maintaininghistitleofGrandmasterratherthan
improvinghischessormakinganattemptatbecoming
WorldChampion.Thisattitudewasillustratedbyhis
resultinthe1955USSRChampionship:outof19
gamesplayed,Petrosianwasundefeated,butwononly
fourgamesanddrewtherest,witheachofthedraws
lastingtwentymovesorless.Althoughhisconsistent
playingensureddecenttournamentresults,itwas
lookeddownuponbythepublicandbySovietchess
mediaandauthorities.[12]Neartheendoftheevent,
Petrosian(standingonright,withjacket)atthe
journalistVasilyPanovwrotethefollowingcomment

Thisperiodofcomplacencyendedwiththe1957USSRChampionship,whereoutof21gamesplayed,
Petrosianwonseven,lostfour,anddrewtheremaining10.Althoughthisresultwasonlygoodenoughfor
seventhplaceinafieldof22competitors,hismoreambitiousapproachtotournamentplaywasmetwith
greatappreciationfromtheSovietchesscommunity.HewentontowinhisfirstUSSRChampionshipin
1959,andlaterthatyearintheCandidatesTournamenthedefeatedPaulKereswithadisplayofhisoften
overlookedtacticalabilities.PetrosianwasawardedthetitleofMasterofSportoftheUSSRin1960,and
wonasecondSoviettitlein1961.[14]Hisexcellentplayingcontinuedthrough1962whenhequalifiedfor
theCandidatesTournamentforwhatwouldbehisfirstWorldChampionshipmatch.[12]

CuraaoalongwithPalBenko,MiroslavFilip,BobbyFischer,EfimGeller,PaulKeres,ViktorKorchnoi,
andMikhailTal.Petrosian,representingtheSovietUnion,wonthetournamentwithafinalscoreof17
points,followedbyfellowSovietsGellerandKereseachwith17pointsandtheAmericanFischerwith
14.[15]FischerlateraccusedtheSovietplayersofarrangingdrawsandhaving"gangedup"onhimto
preventhimfromwinningthetournament.[16]Asevidenceforthisclaim,henotedthatall12gamesplayed
betweenPetrosian,Geller,andKeresweredraws.Statisticianspointedoutthatwhenplayingagainsteach

other,theseSovietcompetitorsaveraged19movespergame,asopposedto39.5moveswhenplaying
againstothercompetitors.AlthoughresponsestoFischer'sallegationsweremixed,FIDElateradjustedthe
rulesandformattotrytopreventfuturecollusionintheCandidatesmatches.[15]
HavingwontheCandidatesTournament,PetrosianearnedtherighttochallengeMikhailBotvinnikforthe
titleofWorldChessChampionina24gamematch.Inadditiontopracticinghischess,Petrosianalso
preparedforthematchbyskiingforseveralhourseachday.Hebelievedthatinsuchalongmatch,physical
fitnesscouldbecomeafactorinthelatergames.ThisadvantagewasincreasedbyBotvinnikbeingmuch
olderthanPetrosian.[15]Whereasamultitudeofdrawsintournamentplaycouldpreventaplayerfrom
takingfirstplace,drawsdidnotaffecttheoutcomeofaoneononematch.Inthisregard,Petrosian's
cautiousplayingstylewaswellsuitedformatchplay,ashecouldsimplywaitforhisopponenttomake
mistakesandthencapitalizeonthem.[17]PetrosianwonthematchagainstBotvinnikwithafinalscoreof5
to2with15draws,securingthetitleofWorldChampion.[18]

ReigningWorldChampion
UponbecomingWorldChampion,Petrosiancampaignedforthepublicationofachessnewspaperforthe
entireSovietUnionratherthanjustMoscow.Thisnewspaperbecameknownas64.[19]Petrosianstudiedfor
adegreeofMasterofPhilosophicalScienceatYerevanStateUniversityhisthesis,dated1968,wastitled
"ChessLogic,SomeProblemsoftheLogicofChessThought".[14]
ThreeyearsafterPetrosianhadearnedthetitleofWorldChessChampion,hewaschallengedbyBoris
Spassky.Petrosiansuccessfullydefendedhistitle,afeatthathadnotbeenaccomplishedsinceAlexander
AlekhinedefeatedEfimBogoljubovinthe1934WorldChampionship.[20]However,Spasskywoulddefeat
EfimGeller,BentLarsenandViktorKorchnoiinthenextcandidatescycleearningarematchwith
Petrosian,atMoscow1969.Spasskywonthematchby1210.

Latercareer
AlongwithanumberofotherSovietchesschampions,hesigneda
petitioncondemningtheactionsofthedefectorViktorKorchnoiin
1976.Itwasthecontinuationofabitterfeudbetweenthetwo,
datingbackatleasttotheir1974Candidatessemifinalmatchin
whichPetrosianwithdrewafterfivegameswhiletrailing31
(+31=1).HismatchwithKorchnoiin1977sawthetwoformer
colleaguesrefusetoshakehandsorspeaktoeachother.Theyeven
demandedseparateeatingandtoiletfacilities.Petrosianwentonto
losethematchandwassubsequentlyfiredaseditorofRussia's
largestchessmagazine,64.Hisdetractorscondemnedhisreluctance
toattackandsomeputitdowntoalackofcourage.Atthispoint
however,Botvinnikspokeoutonhisbehalf,statingthatheonly
attackedwhenhefeltsecureandhisgreateststrengthwasindefence.[21]

ofArmeniaissuedthis220dram
stamponFebruary25,2005.

Deathandlegacy
Petrosiandiedofstomachcancerin1984inMoscowandisburied
intheMoscowArmenianCemetery.In1987,WorldChess
ChampionGarryKasparovunveiledamemorialatPetrosian'sgrave
whichdepictsthelaurelwreathofWorldChampionandanimage
containedwithinacrownofthesunshiningabovethetwinpeaksof
MountAraratthenationalsymbolofPetrosian'sArmenian
homeland.On7July2006,amonumenthonoringPetrosianwas
openedintheDavtashendistrictofYerevan,inthestreetnamed
afterPetrosian.[23]

Olympiadsandteamchampionships
PetrosianwasnotselectedfortheSovietOlympiadsideuntil1958
hehadalreadybeenaCandidatetwicebythattime.Buthethen
madetenstraightSovietOlympiadteamsfrom1958to1978,won
nineteamgoldmedals,oneteamsilvermedal,andsixindividual
Petrosian'sstatueneartheYerevan
goldmedals.

Petrosianwasaconservative,cautious,andhighlydefensivechessplayerwhowasstronglyinfluencedby
AronNimzowitsch'sideaofprophylaxis.Hemademoreefforttopreventhisopponent'soffensive
capabilitiesthanhedidtomakeuseofhisown.Heveryrarelywent
ontheoffensiveunlesshefelthispositionwascompletelysecure.[6]
Heusuallywonbyplayingconsistentlyuntilhisaggressive
opponentmadeamistake,securingthewinbycapitalizinguponthis
mistakewithoutrevealinganyweaknessesofhisown.Thisstyleof
playoftenledtodraws,especiallyagainstotherplayerswho
preferredtocounterattack.Nonetheless,hispatienceandmasteryof
defencemadehimextremelydifficulttobeat.Hewasundefeatedat
the1952and1955Interzonals,andin1962hedidnotloseasingle
tournamentgame.Petrosian'sconsistentabilitytoavoiddefeat
earnedhimthenickname"IronTigran".[25]
Petrosianpreferredtoplayclosedopeningsthatdidnotcommithis
piecestoanyparticularplan.Asblack,Petrosianenjoyedplaying
theSicilianDefence,NajdorfVariation[26]andtheFrenchDefence.
Aswhite,heoftenplayedtheEnglishOpening.[27]Petrosianwould
oftenmovethesamepiecemultipletimesinafewmoves,confusing
TigranPetrosian'sGrave
hisopponentsintheopeningandthreateningdrawsbythreefold
repetitionintheendgame.InagameagainstMarkTaimanovduring
the1955USSRChessChampionship,Petrosianmovedthesamerook6timesina24movegame,with4of
thosemovesoccurringonconsecutiveturns.[28][29]Hehadastrongaffinityforknightsratherthanbishops,
acharacteristicthatisattributedtotheinfluenceofAronNimzowitsch.[30]
AnumberofillustrativemetaphorshavebeenusedtodescribePetrosian'sstyleofplay.HaroldC.
Schonbergsaidthat"playinghimwasliketryingtoputhandcuffsonaneel.Therewasnothingtogrip."[25]
Hehasbeendescribedasacentipedelurkinginthedark,[25]atigerlookingfortheopportunitytopounce,a
pythonwhoslowlysqueezeshisvictimstodeath,[6]andasacrocodilewhowaitsforhourstomakea
decisivestrike.[31]BorisSpassky,whowouldsucceedPetrosianasWorldChessChampion,describedhis
styleofplayassuch:"Petrosianremindsmeofahedgehog.Justwhenyouthinkyouhavecaughthim,he

Petrosian'sstyleofplay,althoughhighlysuccessfulforavoidingdefeats,wascriticizedasbeingdull.Chess
enthusiastssawhis"ultraconservative"styleasanunwelcomecontrasttothepopularimageofSovietchess
as"daring"and"indomitable".[32]His1971CandidatesTournamentmatchwithViktorKorchnoifeatured
somanymonotonousdrawsthattheRussianpressbegantocomplain.However,SvetozarGligori
describedPetrosianasbeing"veryimpressiveinhisincomparableabilitytoforeseedangerontheboard

Deafness
Petrosianwaspartiallydeaf[46]andworeahearingaidduringhismatches,whichsometimesledtostrange
situations.OnoneoccasionheofferedadrawtoSvetozarGligori,whichGligoriinitiallyrefusedin
surprise,butthenchangedhismindinafewsecondsandreofferedthedraw.However,Petrosiandidnot
evenrespond,insteadwentaheadandwonthegame.Asitlaterturnedout,heswitchedoffhishearingaid,
