Happy 94th!

Bud Geer and his twin sister Meredith (Geer)

Kummerfeldt celebrated their 94th birthday
yesterday at Valley View Home, although their
birthday is actually this Friday, September 18th.
They were born on a farm outside of New London,
Minnesota, two months early: Meredith weighing
three-and-a-half pounds, Bud weighing four
pounds. They grew up on the farm with a younger
brother until they were 13 years old. When the
Great Depression hit the nation and times were

tough, that is how they ended up here as the family

moved to Park Grove where their father worked
on building the Fort Peck Dam. So, while a lot of
bad things can be said about the "Dirty Thirties",
had it not been for the construction of the Fort
Peck Dam, we would have never gotten to know
Bud and Meredith (and many more good folks
that migrated here and stuck around for good
after construction was complete). Happy 94th to
Bud and Meredith on Friday!

Guest Opinion Column by Corey Stapleton: Trust But Verify

I was a brand new Navy Ensign reporting to my ship
off the coast of Italy. My first job was to lead a division of
Boatswain Mates who were responsible for maintaining
the topside equipment on the aircraft carrier: anchors,
chains, lifeboats and various mechanical gear.
Straight out of the U.S. Naval Academy, I was
green. Upon pleasantly meeting my Chief Petty Officer
who reported to me, but being nearly twice my age, he
actually supervised the men in our division, I asked him
to brief me on the status of the sailors, our schedule, our
maintenance, our routine.

Everythings great, sir! said Chief.

Great! I responded, Id like you to show me.

Now, the response that my Chief Petty Officer gave
me was so laden with profanity that I cannot print here.
His perception that some brand new officer shouldnt
come in and demand verification of our readiness wasnt
completely baseless. After all, I had yet to earn the trust
of my division. Still, I had a job to do.
Over the next days and weeks, as Chief and I
systematically reviewed all the responsibilities that our
division was tasked with, we found not only several things
to fix, but uncovered some critical repair issues that
required informing people above our paygradebecause

our ships mission was compromised. Everything was not

great. But we became stronger, better, because we didnt
accept the status quo.

Trust, but verify.

Earlier this month I announced that I was running
for Montanas open seat for Secretary of State. And when
I criticized our retiring Secretary of States office for being
nonchalant and silent as to why 52,000 Montana voters
were removed earlier this year, her response reminded
me of that boatswains mate.

Now, to be sure, the Secretary of State isnt subordinate
to anybodycertainly not to me. Her eventual response
to a reporter at National Public Radio was that she didnt
need to communicate this historic removal of 52,000
voters because it was clerical, not political.
Really?! How are the people supposed to know
the context of such an historic removal of voters if our
Secretary of State isnt proactive in explaining what just
happened? And how do we remain vigilant about the
integrity of our elections if that kind of information is
withheld from the general population?
Were going to make some changes if Im elected
Montanas Secretary of State. Im going to publish an
annual State of the Sec. of State report that communicates
to all Montanans meaningful data regarding the integrity
of our elections, voters, and voting laws. While each of
our county election offices is responsible for their county,
its vital that our Secretary of State communicate on
behalf of all counties on voting trends, voter removal,
issues of fraud, statewide turnout and ramifications of the
Electoral College for Presidential elections. The people
deserve to know whats going on.

By the way, the number of inactive Montana voters
removed this two-year cycle was about 12,000 more than
last cycle. I attribute this to one-time voters in the 2008
Presidential election who never voted again, and were
removed in 2015 from our active voting list. I thought
you should know.

Corey Stapleton is a former naval officer and state
senator from Billings. He is running for the Republican
nomination for Montana Secretary of State.

Hinsdale students will be constructing a loophouse similar to this and would love to
have some volunteers come and help this Saturday and Sunday.

Looking for volunteers to help in Hinsdale

The Hinsdale Public School has
been participating in a Farm to School
project since 2009.
The project started with five
cherry tomato plants for the school
lunch program. It continued to
expand such that last year the AgEd and K-12 students grew 85% of
the produce for the school's salad
bar from the middle of August to the
middle of November.
This Saturday and Sunday, the
Hinsdale School and Community are
looking for volunteers to help with the
raising of the first high tunnel. A high

tunnel, often called a hoophouse, is an

unheated greenhouse to aid in fruit and
vegetable crop production by extending
the cropping season, providing
protection from the elements and result
in a more stable production system with
less risk of crop failure.
Volunteers are welcome to come
help with this worthy project this
Saturday and Sunday, September 19th
and 20th. The property is located on the
north edge of Hinsdale.
For more information please
contact Patti Armbrister at 406-6487400.

Solid Finances Series Returns

The
Solid
Finances webinar
series is gearing
up for another
year. Some big
changes have been made to improve the series.

The biggest revision is that the series is now jointly
sponsored by South Dakota State University Extension,
University of Idaho Extension and Montana State
University Extension. This new multi-state format will
bring new expertise to the series to better serve you.

The 2015-2016 Solid Finances schedule will consist
of 18 sessions, with the first session on October 7th.
The first 12 sessions will focus on issues for residents
of all three states. The final six sessions will focus on
issues specific to participants from each state. Solid
Finances will feature 10 different presenters sharing
their expertise and answering your questions.
Carrie Johnson (SDSU Extension) will open the
series on October 7th by addressing Saving Money &
Finding Spending Leaks. Luke Erickson (UI Extension)
will lead the next two sessions on Home Buying
and Emergency Savings. Nancy Porter will wrap up
October by addressing Financial Records Organization:
Preparing for Emergencies & Disasters. Retirement
Planning will be the focus of several sessions in
December.
Here are few participants comments about last
years program:
"I was mostly clueless on car purchasing. That entire
webinar (on car buying) was incredibly helpful."
"I love how you are varying the topics, you are really
covering a lot of different financial aspects and I
love that."
"Though I knew about the basics of retirement,
this program enabled me to not only have a better
understanding, but resources for the future.
Anything I am not certain on or that may change, I
will know where to go for the answers."
The Valley County MSU Extension Service will
once again be offering the free webinars at the Valley
County Courthouse. Or you can register to watch them
on your home computer at: www.msuextension.org/
solidfinances. Recordings of past sessions are available
for viewing at: www.msuextension.org/solidfinances/
