Poster Tips
1. Use a short, catchy title you can use the title to raise a question or present your
message.
2. Posters do not normally have an abstract your poster is already an abstract of your
research.
3. Selected use of bold text or larger fonts use at the start of paragraphs for topic
sentences, or at the end for the bottom line.
4. Use section headings to convey information you dont have to have conventional
section headings like Introduction, Hypothesis, Methods, etc.
5. Use large, clear, fonts - few people wish they had used a smaller font. Many people
wish they had used a larger font.
6. Redraw all figures do not reuse figures from manuscripts. Redraw to make clearer,
lines thicker, fonts bigger, etc.
7. Use color color can be used to indicate sections, link together ideas, or different
differentiate experiments.
8. Subdivide into blocks and align blocks align blocks of text and figures both
horizontally and vertically for a clean look.
9. Reduce text blocks for a standard poster think 800 words or less, for URC think 400500 or less.
10. Make the main idea very clear youll be pointing to it a lot. For example, consider a
large central figure with the main idea.
11. Attract an audience use photographs, audio, 3d images, specimens, props, etc. if it is
relevant and not just a gimmick.
12. Make sure the route through the poster is clear use numbers, arrows, etc.
III. Donor Thank You Letter to be printed and signed, then delivered to Jen Johansen in room
102 of bldg. 494. The letter should be written at the conclusion of your summer research. Please
