P ROLOGU E

Last night was the best thing

I have ever done

As the lights dimmed, the noise was deafening. Ear-splitting

screams cut through the crisp evening air and could be heard
for miles around New York City.
A staggering 20,000 fans had turned out to see Harry
Styles and the rest of One Direction in the flesh at the fabled
Madison Square Garden, the Big Apples most iconic music
venue. It was the hottest ticket in town and many teenage
fans had fallen to the ground in uncontrollable hysterics after
getting their hands on one.
Flags from every corner of the globe waved high in the
crowd, showing their support. Girls craned their necks to try
to get a better view and camera bulbs flashed endlessly as
the fans tried to see if the boys were already on the stage.

Rows of burly, expressionless security guards lined the platform, which was fitted with a huge runway, so the quintet
could serenade the fans from all sides.
Harry and the boys had managed to sell out the arena, the
third biggest in the world, in the record time of less than one
minute, so they were under huge pressure to deliver. The
nerves backstage were palpable, with Harry tweeting nervous to his 9 million followers on the social networking site.
All the band members had struggled to sleep the night
before because they were so high on adrenaline.
Earlier that day Harry had posted a message to his fans
reading: Thinking about what we were doing three years
ago today. . . Today we play Madison Square Garden. We
can never thank you enough. We love you. xx
In the crowd his proud mum Anne Cox, dad Des Styles
and stepdad Robin Twist watched on. After a whirlwind
romance, his new girlfriend, pretty US pop star Taylor Swift,
was in the wings too, waiting to celebrate at the lavish
private after-party. Also along for the ride were Liam Payne,
Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horans nearest
and dearest. It was the largest gathering of 1Ds families and
friends since the final of The X Factor in December 2010.
The minutes ticked by: at last, the historic moment had
arrived. The immense stage lit up in an explosion of blue
and white and the 1D logo illuminated the backdrop. The
crowd continued to roar, making a thunderous noise, and
glowing images of the band played in a moving montage.
Then, as a countdown went from ten to one, cannons

threw out great clouds of smoke high into the air and the
crowd were on their feet, bellowing as loudly as they possibly
could in anticipation.
The blue spotlights bore down on Harry, Zayn, Niall,
Louis and Liam as they burst into a rendition of their
uptempo hit, Up All Night, from the front of the runway.
They were all pumped up, their hearts hammering and their
ears ringing from the noise of the crowd. Harry bounced
up and down on the far side of the stage with an infectious
grin and cheeky hip thrusts, and egged the audience on to
dance with him. Many fans almost had cardiac arrests as
Harry gave them a smouldering stare or steely gaze. By the
time the boys had finished the first song, a pair of knickers
had been thrown at him the first of a few pairs a bra and
an iPhone would follow as the evening unfolded.
They whipped the crowd into a frenzy with a medley of
hits, including Na Na Na, Stand Up, I Wish, Gotta Be
You and More Than This and Harry, overwhelmed by the
moment, commented: This place is bloody huge, to roaring
applause.
They then launched into a cover version of Wheatus
Teenage Dirtbag, complete with pyrotechnics, before
performing Live While Were Young, Tell Me A Lie and
Everything About You.
In the middle of the show, the five-piece answered some
questions from Twitter, such as Who has the loudest section? cue lots and lots of screams Who can jump the
highest? (Niall because Harrys jeans were too tight) and If

you were an animal what would you be and what would
your mating call be? Harry had fans bent double with laughter when he said his mating call would be to introduce
himself and say, Hello, Im the Real Liam Payne. Nice to
meet you. Other tweets asked them to impersonate New
York cab drivers and wondered what they would do if a
chicken attacked them.
Then they sang Moments, I Want and Save You Tonight,
when they threw themselves into the delighted crowd and
had photos taken with fans, while the nervous security
guards manhandled them away from some of the more
eager followers who were grabbing their clothes.
Next, during the performance of their latest acoustic
ballad, Little Things, they were joined on stage by their
good pal Ed Sheeran, who had written the track. He was
stunned by the rapturous reception. They concluded the
set with One Thing, Kiss You and Cmon Cmon and, for
an encore, they bounded back on stage for the immensely
popular anthem, What Makes You Beautiful. Harry had
a bra hurled at him and ran around with it onstage before
throwing it up into the air with a laugh. The whole crowd
were singing along in unison: teenagers and parents; young
and old; British and American.
Niall told the screaming audience: This is the best night
of our lives. You guys have travelled from all around the
world and we cannot believe what has happened here
tonight. Thank you so much.
The group had a big hug, while confetti and giant balx

loons flew around the arena, and as the gig ended Harry
declared: I have never been so proud.
The gig, their last full-length one for 2012, was the most
incredible way to cap off a truly blinding year, in which millions followed Harrys every move.
The following morning, still on a high from the night before
and getting back to his hotel at 4a.m. after the exclusive afterparty, he tweeted: Last night was the best thing I have ever
done.
The Chairman-CEO of Columbia Records, Rob Stringer,
said the 90-minute set was almost like the biggest showcase
youve ever been to and the worlds most influential music
magazine, Billboard, declared that the gig was less of a
proper concert and more of a victory lap from a banner
year.
The epic performance cemented their status as the top
boyband in the world.
This unprecedented level of success was something no
one could have predicted two years earlier not even their
mentor Simon Cowell when he signed them to his prestigious Syco label after they came third in The X Factor, behind
Rebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle.
Their meteoric rise to global superstardom has made
music history and they have broken hearts and records along
the way, landing two No. 1 albums in the States, a feat that
not even the mighty Beatles could manage back in the 1960s.
They have notched up a whopping 15 million record sales

and their second album Take Me Home has reached the top
of the charts in a staggering thirty-five countries.
Before he entered the show, Harry, an ordinary lad with
a big smile and bags of charm, was singing in a small band
called White Eskimo and living in rural Cheshire. He
enjoyed the simple things in life. He had fun with his friends,
dated girls from school and earned 3.65 an hour at the local
bakery on Saturdays.
Fast-forward to 2013 and he is now a member of one of
the biggest boybands in the world.
