SYLLABUS

Objective: This courseaims at introducing the basic principles and concepts inthe fieldof studyknown as
linguistics.Linguisticsisthestudyofhumanlanguage,itsscientificandsystematicfoundations.Inthiscourse,one
oftheareaswewillbeexploringwillbewhatitmeanstoknowalanguage,bothintermsofitsstructureanduse.We
willalsolookatphasesoflanguageacquisitionandinvestigatetheprinciplesunderlyingtheproductionoflanguage.
Anotherareawewillconsiderwillbegeneticrelationoflanguagesandlanguageinhistoricalperspective.

Courserequirements:
Assignments:Therewillbefourdataanalysisassignmentstobecompletedbythedatesgivenonthesyllabus
bythebeginningofclasstime.Latesubmissionswillnotbeaccepted.

Attendanceisrequired.Participationandassignmentswillaccountfor10%ofyourcoursegrade.
Exams:Therewillbetwomidtermexamsinthecourseofthesemestereachcounting25%ofthecoursegrade.
Midtermexam:Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytoensurethatthereisnoclashwithother

midterm

exams.Thisisamasscourseandthedateofthemidtermcannotbechanged.

Finalexam:Acumulativefinalexamwilldeterminetheremaining40%ofyour gradeStudentswho
missoneofthetwomidterms,orstudentswhoseaverageofthetwomidtermexamsislessthan35willnot
beadmittedtothefinalexam.
ProblemSession(PS)hours:YouwillmeetwiththeTeachingAssistant(TA)ofthecourseregularlytodo

furtherpracticeandtodiscussthequestionsyoumayhaveregardingthelecturesand/orassignments.Attendanceis
required.
