Bitter divisions stemming from the NDPs controversial decision to dole out sizable raises at a time when
unemployment and wage cuts are on the rise in Strathmore and province-wide, prompted reconsideration of
the issue and proved the Opposition effective against a
majority government.
Seven NDP officials serving on the 11-member Standing Committee on Legislative Offices, recently exercised
their majority vote by giving the thumbs up on a 7.25
per cent pay raise for all senior independent officers of
the legislature. The committee furthermore approved
funding for a jaunt to Boston to attend the 2015 COGEL Conference on Government Ethics. However, the
approved motion was met with outcry from opposition
members, forcing the issue back before the committee
later this week.
This is a perfect example of how opposition is supposed to work, when the government rams through a
huge pay increase for senior bureaucrats at an entirely
inappropriate time and did so in a closed, non-public
meeting without any notice to the opposition, said
Strathmore-Brooks Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt,
who does not serve on the committee.
Our members on the committee did not need a directive of the leaders office to know that at a time when
Albertans are losing jobs or taking pay cuts to stay afloat
and small businesses are hurting, its inappropriate to
give government employees that kind of a raise. The
NDP government seems to be disconnected from the reality where folks in the private sector are left to blow
in the wind but that government employees are entirely
shielded from the circumstances we find ourselves in. I
dont think thats fair.
A Calgary and Area Labour Market report for April
to June, released by the Alberta government, revealed
an increase in the unemployment rate to 5.6 per cent;
up 0.6 per cent from the previous quarter. According to
the report, Calgarys unemployment rate is predicted to
climb steadily to 6.2 per cent in two years time. While
statistics are unavailable in Strathmore, over 360 local
residents visited the McBride Career Group last month.
Were seeing a lot more people in our office and
people are frustrated, said Michelle Fox-Salim, project
manager with McBride Career Group.
Theyre used to a certain salary and unfortunately
theyre not going to get what they were making in oil
and gas for the jobs they are looking for now.
During the 2015 Municipal Census, 259 residents were
able to work but unemployed. The struggle was reflected
across the province, where the number of unemployed
citizens increased by 14,300 people for a total of 138,200
in the second quarter.

Council amends bylaw to allow fire hall

into Lakewood Meadows
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

When town council amended the Land Use Bylaw to add
protective emergency services as a permitted use to a myriad of other districts, it sanctioned more flexibility to town
staff while paving the road to possibly house a fire hall in
the Lakewood Meadows community.
By amending the definition of protective emergency services within the bylaw, the services that include police stations, fire halls, and ambulances are not only allowed in
the district of Central Business, the CHWY Highway Commercial, the P1 Public Service, and the M1 Light Industrial,
but also in residential districts including Single Detached
Residential Districts, various low, medium, and high density
districts, districts accommodating mobile homes.
Although these emergency protective services are normally found outside of residential areas, the change in regulation would allow for the future creation of street-front police
stations and small-scale fire halls a possible solution to
Strathmores 10-minute response problem.
Its become fairly common in many communities of
building store-front police stations temporary or perma-

house with an oversize garage, said Werner Fischer, director
of planning and development for the town of Strathmore.
In an ideal world, in a perfect world, this wouldve been
flagged at the area structure plan stage. Even more preferable we would do the zoning and the subdivision application concurrently so we dont have those kind of questions
where the line exactly is. The situation that we have in Lakewood Meadows, we have a lot that looks like it can accommodate a residence with a fire hall in it and thats why were
bringing it forward. Everybody wants a fire hall, they just
dont want to live next to one.
Although Lakewood Meadows already contains a subdivision, Fischer said he believes the situation is being addressed early enough in the process to be successful. While
he addressed the issue to council on Sept. 16, he mentioned
more flexibility will be required in the future regarding relaxations on a case-by-case basis.
With the absence of Councillor Brad Walls, council unanimously approved Bylaw 15-22 to amend the definition of
Protective Emergency Services in the Land Use Bylaw and
add the services as a permitted use to districts R1, R1N, R2,
R2X, R3, MHP, MHS, C1, and M2 on Sept. 16.

is often beneficial to the consumer. Funerals are

one of those purchases that many people rarely
research before they choose a provider. What
many people dont realize is that not every
funeral home allocates their charges in the same
way. If you intend to shop around for prices,
it is important to ensure that you are receiving
the same services from each provider. Most
costs will be broken down into transportation,
professional services, and facilities categories.
To get a fair comparison, you must add
all the charges rather than just comparing
one category. It is also very important to
understand any and all extra costs that may be
added to the final bill. Meeting with a funeral
director to go over your ideas is the best way to
get an accurate price on your funeral plans.

Brentwood Schools Grade 4-6 musical students got the unique experience
of making the connection of how music, science and technology are linked.
This will help the students make
cross curriculum connections and
they will be able to discuss what they

Facilitators from the National Music Centre based in Calgary came to
the school on Sept. 18 and presented
four workshops, and students rotated
through each one.
In the guitar science unit, students
looked at a familiar instrument and its
separate parts, noting how the strings
construction and tension on the string
interact with the body of the guitar to
create sound. Differences in the types
of guitar music were also explored.
In the building a theremin unit, students built an electronic device that
produces sound without the player
touching the device. Clips, speakers,
amplifiers, conductive play-doe and
circuits all connect to give students and

medications came as liquid extracts of natural

was the main ingredient in many of these

Portion size is still one of the most powerful

important when we travel. We tend to be a little
more liberal in our eating habits on holidays and
this can often lead to weight-gain.
Guidelines about coffee consumption seem to

Ever since 1998, when drugs became available

(CHP Canada)
A small miracle needs
to take place to get
elected as the MP of a
small party in our not so democratic
first-past-the-post electoral system.
However, if elected, I will represent
ALL Bow River constituents in Ottawa to the best of my ability. I would
want to play an active role in the prolife caucus in Ottawa. Better access
to export markets for our agricultural
industries and for the oil and gas sector would be something I work on. Another item I would want to focus on is
real environmental protection, fighting
real pollution, instead of wasting our
time on vague problems like climate
change. Democratic reform would be
high on my agenda! The CHP is in favour of a more democratic system of
(mixed) proportional representation.
Last but not least, its also high time
for real changes in our immigration
system. Many farmers in Western Canada and also other businesses like the
beef processing plant in Brooks have
a hard time to find qualified labour.
After endless reforms in our immigration system, its still a nightmare to hire
qualified foreign workers. Something
needs to change here, skilled workers
should be the main focus of our immigration program. However, the CHP
is not in favour of unlimited immigration. Some foreign cultures are incompatible with our Western culture. Just
look at the Muslim ghettos around cities like Paris with zero integration taking place, rather the opposite, dangerous segregation. This is slowly turning
into a disaster for Europe, and if we
dont watch out, also for North America! Some of todays immigrants are not
like the immigrants that built North
America in the past. Some immigrants
are simply not able and/or willing to
integrate into our society. We need to
become more selective in the countries
where we source our immigrants from!
That has nothing to do with racism, it
is common sense policy! In all cases
Canada should play a big role in helping to mitigate the refugee crises in
this world, with a major focus on improving living conditions in the areas
where these people come from.

The term working dog usually applies
to stock or rescue dogs, but there is a special category that applies to dogs trained
to assist handicapped people cope with
tasks of daily life.
Local farmer Mel Foat suddenly lost his
sight and was fortunate enough to quickly gain his yellow lab named Walker,
through the Lions Foundation of Canada
Dog Guides organization.
Since 1983, the Lions Foundation of
Canada has provided specially trained
dog guides to over 2,150 people in Canada. The training and breeding facilities
are located in Ottawa. They provide guide

ferred to the foundation in July, and a

representative from the foundation came
out and interviewed him to ensure his
suitability.
Its almost a similar process to adopting
a child, said Foat.
They measured his walking pace and
height for the harness, and they began to
look for a dog whose demeanor would be
a match for Foat.
In January, Foat flew down to Ontario
to begin his training at the complex and
likened the process to going to camp.
There were a number of people with
special needs at the complex, all training
with their dog companions. The applicants slept and ate at the complex and the
dogs eventually stayed in the rooms, as
part of the bonding process. Foat said they
were responsible for walking and feeding
their canine partners. They were required
to maneuver through an obstacle course.

The teams were eventually taken into the

city to practice their learned skills.
Partners sign a contract to retain the
dog and it is valid for eight years, so the
dogs are essentially on loan. During that
time, the foundation does periodic follow-up to ensure the dog is being cared
for appropriately. After the eight years,
the dogs can be adopted by the partners.
Foat has been giving motivational
speaking engagements and promotes the
organization in his work. He said that
Walker has become a celebrity in the
community.
The community looks out for us and
many of the children recognize Walker
when we are out, said Foat. This has become a passion for me and in a way given
me a new purpose in life.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Ken & Bonnie Seitz

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Kens paternal family originated in
Odessa, Russia which is now part of
the Ukraine. They moved to Canada in
1903, leaving the old country with four
children, but unfortunately three of
them died on their way here.
The sole survivor was Archie
Klaibers mother - Mary. After
arriving in Alberta five more
children were welcomed to the
family. The family homesteaded 10 miles south of Medicine
Hat, living in a dugout for three
years before moving to the current ranch, which is still operated by a great-grandson. They
were honoured in 2006 for the
100th Anniversary of the Seitz
family homestead.
His maternal family originated in the
same area of Europe, moving to Canada in 1912. When I asked why the two
families came to this part of Canada, he
replied Canadian Government advertising along with CPR offers of free land,
indicated life would be much better than
the life they were experiencing in the
Ukraine. But, after losing three children
on their way here, they did wonder!
Ken was born in Medicine Hat in
1937, the oldest of three children born
to Albert and Emma Seitz. He attended
the original Eagle Butte School through
Grade 8, then joined his father working
on the ranch. Ken has one brother still
operating the ranch in Eagle Butte and
one sister living in Medicine Hat.
Bonnies family originated in Southern
England and her paternal grandparents
Harold and Frances Risdon moved to
Canada in 1909, homesteading south of
Strathmore. Her maternal grandfather
Ernest Stoodley was born in Southern
England in 1882 and moved to Bismarck,
South Dakota when he was 14 years old,
and became an apprentice printer. He
later moved to Strathmore to homestead,
and became one of the first printers at
the Strathmore Standard. Of note is the
fact he had started homesteading in Bismark, but after visiting the Strathmore
area and purchasing land in Nightingale,
he sold his original land in North Dakota. Ernest married Millicent Greene,
whom he had met at Brighton Beach on
a previous visit to England in 1913. Bonnies grandmother was supposed to sail
on the Titanic, but missed the sailing,
and came the following year.
Bonnie was born in Calgary in 1946,
to Ed and Hazel Risdon and lived four
miles south of Strathmore, and was the
middle child to a brother and sister.
When Samuel Crowther School opened

in 1952, she was in the first Grade One class to attend, and she
was also in the first class to graduate!
Ken moved to Strathmore in 1964, and purchased Bill
Sadlers place. He
and Bonnie met in the Spring of 1966, and were married
later that year.
They have two children, Tracey who has her own consulting
business and Dallas who is an artist/lecturer in London, England. Tracey has given them three grandchildren.
Bonnie worked for The Royal Bank of Canada in
Strathmore from 1966 to 1968, and in later years
worked for Coldwell Agencies and Bumper to
Bumper.
They ranched until 1997 when they sold the
cows, and along with their daughter Tracey and
her family, built Oxbow Country Golf Course on
their land. They sold the golf course in 2007 and
retired.
Ken and Bonnie have always been involved with
the community: Ken joined Cheadle Lions in 1967,
then transferred to Strathmore Lions in 1968 and
served in many positions including District Governor in 198081. He served as Chairman of the Council of Governors in
1981-82, was a Founding Member of Strathmore Ag Society
and served as its first secretary. He served on the board of

LET US NOT WAIT

It is very true that tragedy brings
a community together. As we all
watched and waited and prayed a
few weeks ago, hoping that in the
midst of a tragedy, the life of little
Hailey would be preserved and she
would be found safe, a clear reality
emerged. Crisis tragedy, brings a
community together.
As people gathered for a candlelight
vigil, only to be devastated by the
tragic news the RCMP had to deliver,
the heart of a community was evident. The people of Blairmore might
be shaken but they will stand together, person by person, agency by
agency, and they will come through
this event that right now seems too
hard to believe or understand.
The questions, the fears, the sorrow
will be vast and will last long, but
they will stand together and the
community will continue.
Why is it that it takes a tragedy for a
community to come together? Why
cant we make it our community goal
to rise and stand together, all the
time?
When God created the world, he
built in something called community.
It means that we care for one
another. We watch out for the needs
and we celebrate the successes.
It means that we make people our
priority and we look beyond our
own little corners, striving to make a
difference.
It will take a long time for any of us

to forget the drama and the anger

and disbelief we have felt, as we
have listened to news reports, and
prayed and waited and wondered.
But rather than letting it go and not
allowing it to make a difference,
maybe we can give a bit of meaning
to the tragedy by taking note and
making a difference because of
it. Let us remember and be moved
to stand together as a community,
every day.
We are seeing people struggling
from day to day right now, with
needs, with emotions, with struggles.
Lets stand with one another, and
ease those burdens as a community,
however we can. Lets uphold families, and agencies that are striving to
support one another. Lets gather to
celebrate the blessings and resources we have.
Lets not wait for a tragedy! Lets
stand together and be the kind of
community that God intended, concerned for the wellbeing of all, and
willing to stand together and make
our community the best that we
can be, known for the very love and
compassion we show to one another,
all the time.

Defeat the scams

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

If you have had an unidentified person from Microsoft
call to tell you your computer has a virus, or someone
saying that Canada Revenue
wants to prosecute unless
you pay up (unless you really do have to pay up), or
received an email that Unit-

ed Nations Secretary General

Ban Ki-moon wants to give
you millions of dollars, you
might be prey for a scam.
Every time you open your
email or pick up your phone,
there is the chance that it is
someone with a scam waiting to take your money
If it sounds too good to
be true, it is, said Wheatland

People are out there trying

to take your money, so we
want to give you as much information as we can to keep
you safe.
At the Seniors Power symposium held at Hope Church
in Strathmore on Sept. 11,
Permann gave some good information about those who
scam and good protection
methods to use against them.
Permann highlighted the
various types of scams that
were directed at the public as well as seniors that
included telephone, credit
card, email, door-to-door, ID
theft, lottery scams and contractor fraud.
He said according to the
Canadian Anti-fraud Association, over $75 million dollars
was lost to scams in Canada
in 2014.
We as Canadians are generally polite, but Permann
reassured the audience that
hanging up on the caller,
non-reply to that email, not
letting that door knocker in
and being suspicious of anyone asking for money are
completely OK.
Permann said reputable
agencies wouldnt ask for
prepaid cards, leave messages for money on the phone,
or share your information
with others.
He said if you are unsure,

Wheatland peace officer Kris Permann prepares for his talk to seniors on how to avoid
falling victim to scams.

do your research and ask for

identification.
In the recent grandson
calling for emergency bailout money scam, where an
unknown person pretends to
be a family member placed
in jail or stranded overseas,
listeners need to ask questions only the child would
know and talking to others
in the family for verification
could catch the culprits.
Credit card scams can be
thwarted by protecting your
cards and by calling your
credit card company. If you
suspect misuse after looking
closely at your bills, cancel
the card, and never give out
pins, passwords or identifying information. Shredding
financial statements, billing, and things with address
numbers will keep garbage
can thieves from getting confidential information.

Kaidens Journey through Brain Cancer

Thought for
the Week
~

We do not
get tempted
by that
which
repulses us.

From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank everyone who supported our little
boy that special night of September 12th, 2015 at the Cheadle Community Hall. That
night we saw the strength in numbers and love and we are absolutely honoured and still
filled with emotion. Without a doubt, this has changed Kaiden`s and our lives forever.
A special thanks goes to Kaidens Great Aunt Kelley and Uncle Wayne Akister the
coolest great aunt and uncle a little boy could ask for, The Hayes Family and friends, the
Cheadle Lion`s club, Strathmore Times, our little lemonade girl Linsdey Koskimaki and
everyone else who contributed in any way to making that night such a success.
With every day in every way, Kaiden is getting better and better
With love,
Eric, Ashley & our superhero Kaiden

Our Sincerest and Most Heartfelt Thanks

Angela and Max Dressler
Kaidens Grandma and Grandpa

On Saturday, September 12th, we were honored and privileged to attend an auction

fund raising event at the Cheadle Community Hall, graciously hosted by Wayne and
Kelley Akister. The fund raiser was in support of our son Eric, daughter-in-law Ashley
and 2 year old grandson, Kaiden Dressler who has been fighting brain cancer for the
past 6 months.
We arrived in Cheadle on the Thursday prior to the event and attended the hall to
assist in the set up. Immediately, we were warmly welcomed and embraced by all who
were present and over the next 2 days, we were completely overwhelmed by everyones
kindness, caring, generosity, and most notably, the outpouring of love and support for
our little grandson.
While we met and spoke with so many wonderful and kind-hearted people during
our time in Cheadle and Strathmore, there were a number with whom we shared a few
very special moments and conversation, indicative of everyone who were there. Heres
the deal though and true to the wonderful men and women that they are they sought
no recognition or acknowledgement. Rather, they were good folks doing the very good
things that all good folks do.
To Kelley and Wayne Akister, Kaidens Great Auntie and Uncle thank you from the
bottom of our hearts for everything. And to Mike, Cathy, Amanda and Robert Hayes
we didnt know you 2 weeks ago but you are now part of our family (whether you like it
or not). And then we met Chase Minor Ayers, this amazing young man who took the
week off work to do everything he could to make this all happen. Incredible.
But it didnt stop there. Our deepest and most profound thanks to Tessa Martin,
the MC and Janet Burns of Dreams and Celebrations whose beautiful decorations and
poignant, loving video made the evening so special; to Charlotte Satink thank you
for sharing some wonderful conversation with us and for the most mind-blowing Jello
refreshments weve ever sampled; warmest thanks to Roma Catering for the sumptuous
feast; to all of the kind, loving and most generous individual and corporate donors
thank you so much for your generosity and thoughtfulness. Your kindness keeps us
looking up.
One special thought though goes out to someone very sweet and very special. To a
young lady who we now call our Little Lemonade Girl, Lindsey Koskimaki; please accept
a special thank you from Grandma and Grandpa Dressler. Bless you.
And to all of the wonderful, generous and kind folks of Cheadle, Chestermere,
Strathmore, Langdon and the surrounding district, please accept our most sincere,
heartfelt thanks and appreciation for everything you have done. And thank you so
much for loving and caring for our Little LionHeart, Kaiden. We have been forever truly
touched and changed because of you.

Lottery scams utilize pop-ups on

Some scammers are using routing devices to post familiar telephone numbers on residents call back answering

Library fills void by using local skills

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Playing a pivotal role within
the community, the Strathmore
Municipal Library is utilizing local talent to offer a highly anticipated program while filling a
need within the town and proving once more that the organization is not just about literature.
Starting next month, residents
will have yet another resource
to take advantage of when the
library launches their Stitchin
Time sewing classes for beginners. While the library staff had
been working on getting the
program off the ground, interest
and demand continued to steadily grow.
We have a great staff at the
library and theyre all filled with
so many great talents and hobbies, so we just draw on those
talents and those skills that our
staff have to create new programs, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services at the Strathmore Municipal
Library.
Were very fortunate that we
have a seamstress on staff. So we

got this program together to help

amateur sewers to learn some of
those little tips and tricks that
you just dont quite know.
Ilke Schwartz, who is known
for her sewing skills and has
been approached by community
members on numerous occasions, will be spearheading the
program that will run every third
Saturday of the month with the
exception of November.
The program will require
participants to have their own
sewing machine and bring their
preferred projects. While the
aim of the program is focused
on helping residents tackle ordinary scenarios, such as replacing a broken zipper or hemming
a pair of jeans, the scope of the
project is broad.
While Stitchin Time is just
one more program to add to
the librarys already vast list of
resources offered, it further solidifies their impact on the community a hub that branches out
to meet the needs of Strathmore.
We really thrive to just help
the community out, and sometimes we see a need for things
that are different in the commu-

StrathmoreTimes.com

www.

nity and we go for it, said Carmen Erison, assistant director to

library services.
Libraries arent just about
books anymore. Libraries are
about being a community centre where people come to learn.
Theyre not just coming to a library to learn about books, they
are coming to the library to learn
about everything. Learn about
life; learn new skills; whatever
they can learn. If we can provide
a space for that in the community, then thats a wonderful thing.
The library is also bringing
back Library Snapshot Day on
Oct. 15 that is held during Canadian Library Month each year.
Although providing libraries the
platform to collect data to demonstrate the importance that
libraries play within their community, it is also a chance for
the community to gather at the
library and challenge each other
in some fun games.
Stitchin Time, which is a free
program, begins on Oct. 17 from
1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more information on the librarys current
and upcoming new programs
visit www.strathmorelibrary.ca.

Thank you clients for your support

JENNY SCHUMANN
Strathmore Handi-Bus Association

After many months of reviewing the booked
hours, and days, to see which would be most beneficial to number one you, the client, and to the
Handi-bus Association, it was finally decided at
the June meeting to run the Handi-bus hours similar to most other Handibus organizations: Monday
Friday from 6 a.m - 6 p.m. with exceptions for
appointments that were already booked.
We gave this a trial run for the summer months
and we saw great success!
The support we have received from both the
Town of Strathmore, and the County of Wheatland
clients has been overwhelming and for that we
thank you! There were 532 trips in July, and 424

trips in August. Out of the 956 trips, we had two

complaints, and for that we are sorry. The Handibus Organization is always striving to improve its
operations to work best for everyone, and to meet
everyones needs, while being fiscally responsible.
With the summer hours proving to work so
well, until further notice, the operating hours for
the Handi-bus will remain Monday Friday from
6 a.m. 6 p.m. with exceptions as deemed necessary.
It all wouldnt be possible without donations
from kind hearted people such as Juliette Faucher, Tina Wolfe, Phyllis Bramley, Margaret Gomez
and Richard & Patricia Hawk, and many, more.
It only takes a moment to say thank you but
your thoughtfulness will be remembered a long
time.

Donors triple gifts to

Rosebud Harvest campaign
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Early this year, Rosebud Centre of the Arts (RCA) launched
a campaign called The Harvest. Each dollar they received,
up to a total of $250,000, would be matched by supporters
Lois and Richard Haskayne.
By the end of August, RCA had raised $150,000. Then
another supporter made an offer.
We (the donors and I) had a discussion over breakfast,
and they surprised me with an offer to triple the rest of the
campaign, said Adam Furfaro, RCAs Executive Director.
These people really are online with our mission and our
vision for transforming the students lives and transforming
the world through those students. They believe they can
effect change in the world by being involved in this essentially small group of artists and educators in Rosebud.
This new gift means every donation to any aspect of
Rosebud Centre of the Arts (RCA), given between now and
the end of 2015 to a maximum of $250,000, will be doubled
by the Haskaynes, and tripled by this anonymous donor.
The double and triple donations will go into RCAs operating fund, Furfaro said, but in the end, all giving benefits
the students of Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA).
The students tuition does not cover the cost of their
education, he said. In this sense, the school is the central
focus of this organization, and the theatre and the Mercantile support those efforts.
Furfaro expressed his gratitude for those whove already
donated to The Harvest campaign.
Were just very thankful to all the people who believe in
our mission, he said.
As of Sept. 27, The Harvest had raised $180,000. With
continued giving from new and established supporters,
Furfaro trusts theyll reach their goal of $250,000 in 2015,
for a matched total of $600,000. Then, he said, theyll find a
fun and creative way to celebrate.
To speak to Furfaro, or Paul Muir, RSAs Education Director, about making a donation, call 1-403-677-2350. You can
also donate directly at their website (www.rosebudtheatre.
com).

Musical angels Barb Gregory (middle left) and Carol McKay (middle right) hang up their halos after
a decade of volunteering at the Standard School.
Manny Everett Photo

Musical angels hang up their halos

MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

It has been said that music is a universal language. More and more we
hear about the benefits of music in
things like healing, stress relief, boosting brain-power and memory.
A lot goes into preparing for music
on an individual basis let alone preparing for a gym full of noisy kids
ages 5-13.
Over a decade ago Carol McKay and
Barb Gregory jointly began a music
program at Standard School, as well
as extending it to the Rockyford Elementary School. Parents, grandparents and community residents have
been delighted with their musical offerings twice a year. This past June the
two ladies retired much to the dismay
of everyone who has listened to or
participated in their music over the
last 10 years.
McKay and Gregory introduced kids
to a variety of musical pieces from
classical to modern day. The kids had
opportunities to learn Boomwhackers,
lightweight, tuned percussion, hollow
color-coded, plastic tubes tuned to
musical pitches by length, as well as
triangles and clapping rhythms, just to
name a few.
Carol and Barb would be considered a team of angels who came to
Standard School 12 years ago to give
it a new identity, said Susan Moncks,
a teacher at Standard School. They
volunteered not only countless hours
of their time to our students, but gave
us their talents, encouragement and
their hearts. They made all students
believe they could sing - an important
life skill for us all. The performances
they put together were polished and
fun and brought in a packed crowd
every time. Their retirement brings an
emptiness to our school, but is well
deserved for them.
Principal Karen Smith agreed.
Standard School was extremely
fortunate to have Carol and Barb volunteer their time towards our music
program for many years, said Smith.
Their passion for music and commitment to our students resulted in
years of outstanding performances
that were always enjoyed and appreciated by the students, staff, parents
and community members. These two
ladies made music come alive in our
building.
Going forward Mr.Ed Yu, a teacher
at Standard School is taking over the
elementary music program, as part of

his teaching schedule. I am humbled

to follow in Barbs and Carols footsteps but I believe in music. What
other medium has the power that
music does. It should be a part of
every childs education. Often, when
we think of school and education, academics and sports are at the top of the
list. I believe music and drama are essential to education. There already is
a special connection between children
and music. They want to listen to it,
appreciate it, play it. I see this with
my own very young children who
want to dance just as much as they
want to learn to walk. They want to
sing just as much as they want to learn
to talk. My responsibility is important
but simple: I help kids enjoy music

Winning streak: Canadian Tire Red-ball Campaign

helps kids play sports

Co

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The Strathmore Canadian Tire is on
a roll, as their red-ball sales catapulted
them once again into a winning place
for the second time in a row, raised thousands of dollars for financially disadvantaged children, and increase awareness
within the community to achieve an

even loftier goal in the future.

Each year, Canadian Tires nation-wide
challenge each other to raise funds for
the Jumpstart Campaign, which ensures
children in financial need within their
communities keep active by funding
their sporting aspirations.
The Strathmore Canadian Tire, which
received new ownership under Randy
and Shelley Orford in early 2011, se-

cured a second place win last year, with

490 stores participating country-wide.
The amiable competition to gather the
most Jumpstart Red Ball donations per
transaction garnered the local store
a visit from five-time Olympic medalist Hayley Wickenheiser after raising
$14,072.
This year, winners were separated by
regions and competed for a prize of a
community barbeque valued at $20,000
this year, Strathmore managed to raise
over $14,000 again and the store decided to donate part of the winnings back
into the community.
Strathmore is incredibly generous,
theyve been very supportive to Jumpstart all along, and its not just us, the
community is very important, said Shelley Orford, co-owner of the Strathmore
Canadian Tire.
What we decided to do was make
the barbeque a somewhat more modest
event and use the balance of funds as a
community donation that Randy and I
are going to decide on.
After 450 people attended the barbeque on Sept. 26, the remaining funds
from the event approximately $10,000
will be disbursed back into the community. Although the doubling of the
number of children making use of the
program each year is a healthy indicator
of the fundraising efforts, the campaign
organizers Deborah Dunbar and Mike
Carter were pleasantly taken aback by
Strathmores business communitys enthusiasm to get involved. Chalking their
previous success up to a new approach
in involving the business community,
the fundraiser had support from local businesses again this year. On June
27, the store held their Jumpstart Day
complete with a dunk tank, barbeque,
and face painting. Taking economic
hardships into consideration, the store
approached local businesses to take
part in the dunk tank and have family,
friends, and staff purchase red balls to
throw at the tank and thus take onus off
of the businesses.
The one thing we didnt want to do
this year, because of the way the economy has gone or the way we perceived
the economy was going to be going,
was we didnt really want to be going
after the businesses directly themselves
to be out of pocket, said Mike Carter,

Sophie Sanders (l) and Rachel Orford enjoyed

some time on the bouncy house on Saturday,
Sept. 26 during the Canadian Tires Jumpstart
Event.

service manager with the Strathmore

Canadian Tire.
So we wanted to make it something
that was fun for everyone including our
own staff. Just our own staff wouldnt
have been able to make that whole
event happen. So thats why we went to
the corporations and asked them and
they were all over it.
Ten local businesses got involved
this year, an increase from last years
seven organizations and businesses that
showed their support. However, the
Canadian Tire staff in Strathmore also
received incentives to educate their customers and sell the red balls through
competitions and prizes, resulting in the
fundraising success.
We tried to really push our staff to
sell the red balls, get them pumped up
about it, and its important for us too
that all kids have that chance to play
sports, said Canadian Tire Store Manager Deborah Dunbar, who was instrumental in the campaign.
The money raised here stays within
the community, and doesnt get distributed nationally.
While Orford said a decision has not
yet been made regarding the allocation of the $10,000, it will be revealed
in the near future. Moving forward, the
staff is focusing on greater involvement
with the Strathmore Youth Club, raising
more awareness, and aiming to raise
over $25,000 next year.

Mass Appeal opens in Rosebud Theatre

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Mass Appeal, Rosebud Theatres fall show, directed by Paul
F. Muir, opened on Sept. 18 and runs until Oct. 24.
Father Tim Farley ( John Innes) is a Catholic priest whos
worked hard to earn the approval and affection of his parishioners. He enjoys a comfortable life and is equally comfortable with the fact that he has to compromise a few values in
order to keep it that way.
Mark Dolson (Caleb Gordon) is a seminary student whos
committed to a higher set of ideals and that bothers Father
Tim a little. It bothers him much more that Dolson is determined that Father Tim will re-examine his own principles
too.
Yet Father Tim isnt so jaded he cant see potential in Mark
Dolson, so he agrees to mentor him, planning to smooth
out the rough spots. A clash of values and temperaments is
inevitable but it may bring out truth, and maybe hope and
love will grow along with it.
Innes is a newcomer to Rosebud Theatre, but this is yet another strong performance in a 45-year acting career. For Gordon, a fourth-year student at Rosebud School of the Arts, its

his first major role, but he impressed me by carrying equal

strength with veteran Innes. They both seem so well-cast, its
hard to imagine anyone else playing these roles.
I saw the first read of this play a month ago, so before
opening night, I already knew the story had an impact on
me. Muir commented at that reading that this play is about
truth versus fear, and that God is using Mark Dolson as a
catalyst in His own pursuit of Father Tims heart. In this performance, those themes were developed into clear but subtle
focus.
I also wondered if a full performance would affect me
more deeply than the simple reading, and Im glad to say it
did. In fact, I was surprised to tears by a growing tenderness
between these two men, because I hadnt caught that at all
during first read.
Ive seen other plays directed by Muir Tuesdays with
Morrie, Barefoot in the Park, Diary of Anne Frank, Shape of
a Girl and theyve moved me in different ways. But Mass
Appeal has touched me most deeply, I think, and will be my
new Muir favorite.
Mass Appeal runs Wednesdays through Saturdays, until
Oct. 24. Call 1-800-267-7553 or go to www.rosebudtheatre.

Fans of the Boler trailer, calling

in Rosebuds High Eagle R.V. Resort
Sept. 18-20.
Nearly forty Boler trailers made of
fibreglass and shaped like eggs came
from all over southern Alberta and as
far away as east-end Saskatchewan,

near the Manitoba border.

(Boler campers are) easy to fix up
inside, theyre very light to tow and the
people just love them, said Ed Sonmor, owner of the High Eagle. The interiors are done just out-of -this-world.
Theyre really glammed up.
One couple who came this weekend
didnt even want a place to plug in, he
said, because theyd fitted their trailer
to run on solar power.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

When Eric Schmit died, Strathmore
MMA fighter Justin Schmit fulfilled his
brothers dream of opening an MMA
gym and continued his passion for the
sport by training local kids and adults;
a story he recently shared with Telus
Optiks People We Love documentary.
On Sept. 23, Schmit was followed
around the Optiks crew informing them
on what it means to train kids, while
performing regular training regimes
that make him an effective fighter.
This was kind of Erics vision, said
Schmit.
After he passed away, I took a
chance, and opened this place and just
seeing all the kids. This place is like
where they come hang-out, spend time
and its a safe environment for them
and they have so much fun here, its
awesome for me.
Growing up, Schmit and his brother
could often be found at a hockey rink.
With his gym he hopes to provide an
equally safe environment for Strathmore and area kids.
Teaching these kids is awesome, he
said.
To not only teach them self defense
but to be able to pass on a passion for
martial arts and you see the excitement
in here training and how much fun they
have. Its indescribable.
Schmit, a former hockey player, including stints in the professional ranks,
knows what it takes to be a successful
athlete from a training standpoint.
Its huge to help people, said Schmit.
And not only kids but teenagers. I
worked with a lot of hockey players and
its no secret that I played hockey for
a long time and I trained all these
up and coming hockey players last summer. It was
so awesome for me
because the game
of hockey gave
me so much
and able to
pass on the
knowledge on
how to
train

and how to get ready for a hockey season.

Laura OGrady, who works for Spotlight Productions that produces films
for Telus Optik, found Schmit through
a roundabout way, after Schmits mother contacted the People We Love crew
when she viewed a film on another a
family in Strathmore.
We were connected that way because we had people stories in common, said OGrady.
It seems like Strathmore has lots of
amazing stories, which is fantastic and
amazing people out here that are really
committed to building a community
and supporting each other. Those are
the stories we want to tell.
What she did not know about
Schmit until the filming, was
the amount of dedication he commits to
the sport and his
connections
within
the
community;

Cougars look to strike

a great season

The Wheatland Braves (left) battled hard with the Taber Golden Suns en

home opener on Sept. 26.

Braves and Warriors

find offensive touch
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

For the Wheatland Warriors and the Wheatland Braves, offense was not an issue in their
openers as goals came in bunches, resulting in
perfect 2015/2016 season starts for both teams.
After opening with a 9-0 on the road in Medicine Hat on Sept. 25 and winning their home
opener 8-3 on Sept. 26 over Bow Valley, Warriors head coach Cody Brown was pleased with
the offense, but thinks there is still more chemistry to be had in the next while.
I think we got a lot of skill for sure, said
Brown. Im liking the talent we got and now
its just a matter of working towards a common
goal. Working together and find each out there
but that all comes with time, so definitely will
be working on that.
Despite having the offense coming early,
Brown felt as though there were some nerves,
especially coming from the younger guys who
had not played at the bantam level before.
Youve got a few guys that havent played
this level before and even guys that have, making the jump from peewee, its definitely a
big change for them, said Brown. Definitely,
youve got a few jitters off the bat, youve got to
learn to shake them off and get to work.
Brown will preach this to his team a lot over
the season as they have to learn to avoid bad
habits because it will cost them in the end.
Obviously, this weekend, (we had) a couple
of high scoring games, said Brown. Its good
to see guys finding the net and the finish is always good. But games like that you start coming into bad habits.
Brandon Kasdorf and Stran Backfat Redcrow
led the way in Medicine Hat with two apiece
while Kevin Schrock, Max Schafer, Cole Berg,

Mo Hakim and Ben Kruse supplied single goals.

In the home opener it was Carter Kam with a
hat trick, Kyle Bray scored two, Kasdorf, Kruse
and Schafer each had singles.
The Warriors will be in Lethbridge on Oct. 3
at 4:45 p.m. and Oct. 4 at 9 a.m. in Cranbrook.
Meanwhile, the double-A peewee Braves
started off on the right foot as they edged Taber
5-2 on Sept. 25 at home.
Head coach Carl Knudsen was satisfied with
what he saw from his squad out there on opening night.
It was basically what we expect in a first
game of the season, said Knudsen. The chemistry is still coming along, but overall everyone
came out trying 100 per cent and thats what
you kind of look for in the first game of the season. Chemistry is not always going to be there,
so as long as youre working hard it helps.
He thought the boys lost their focus a bit in
the middle frame but said it was expected with
this age group and more understandable this
early in the year.
Were still getting back into the swing of
things, getting back into game shape I guess,
said Knudsen.
Tristan Zandee notched four goals while Avery Hansen rounded out the offence with one
goal.
The Braves will play a double header in Cranbrook starting on Oct. 2 at 7:45 p.m. and Oct. 3
at 1:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Chiefs will open
their season with a pair of games in Cranbrook
Oct. 3-4.
The local double-A midget team will play their
home opener against the CNHA Blazers on Oct.
10 (4:45 p.m.) before they host the Okotoks Oilers Black the following day at 1:30 p.m. at the
Strathmore Family Centre.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Lack of size in comparison
to last seasons rosters, will
mean more teamwork for
the Crowther Memorial High
School Cougars volleyball
team this year.
According to senior boys
Coach Brad Huntley, this
year will focus on rebuilding and adjusting to make
up for the numbers that are
not in the teams favour this
season.
We dont have the size
weve had in the previous
couple of years, said Huntley.
Were going to be a bit
of a shorter team this year.
Weve got a little bit of
height but weve got six returning, three of the core is
returning. Well do ok, but
well really focus on serve
reception.
Huntley thinks if the effort is there this year that his
team will do well in games,
but it will be more of a learning process than anything.
If the kids work their
butts off theyll be fine, said
Huntley.
But I cant see us being as
strong as we were last year.
Last year was a good year.
The strengths of the team
will revolve around the returning players at important
positions that will be mixed
in with smaller players, that
will have to be quick and
use their speed to the teams
advantage.
Our setting core is pretty
strong, he said.
Were a little bit on the
smaller side but we have
some young, quick kids on
the court. Everyone is pretty
keen to do well this year.
The players will have to
make continual adjustments
on the court and improvements will have to be made

in areas such as serve and

down ball reception, scrambling and core coverage.
The senior girls teams will
be led by a strong contingent of the Strathmore CHAOS club volleyball team and
coach Lindsay Hall. She expects weathered players and
new ones mixed will make
for a great season.
I am very excited about
the team this season, said
Hall.
They all work together
really well and help each
other out. The girls already
have a lot of knowledge and
skill about the game. Both
the girls, and myself, expect
a lot of the team this year.
The continuation to excel and improved communication will be pertinent
throughout the season and
Hall thinks this will become
a trend.
Every girl on the team
can serve well, said Hall.
The girls have a lot of
heart and work hard for every ball. They already seem
like family because they
communicate and care for
one another.
As the season, progresses,
Hall said, some areas will
require focus. These areas
include incorporating a new
system of setting and serve
reception, and blocking.
Junior Varsity Girls coach
Chris Iversen, who spoke for
the boys team as well, thinks
the addition of the boys to
this level only opens up
more opportunities for students to play the sport.
I can speak for both junior teams that we are excited to be able to offer a
second team for both boys
and girls this season, said
Iversen.
Which gives us a great
opportunity for more of our
students to play competitive
volleyball.

Allan heads back to provincials

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore Spartans high school golf
team members put up strong rounds
on Sept. 23 at zones at River Spirit Golf
Course in Cochrane.

However, it is Korbin Allan who is

heading back to provincials after a
round of 77.
Im confident going into it, he said.
Ive been playing fairly well lately, so
I should do well. Im driving the ball
a lot better this year. I could definitely
patch up irons and chipping but theres

always something to work on.

Having dealt with an injury last year,

thought that for a first-year girls team,
they played well, but a couple of more
key shots would have made a difference
in being provincial-bound or not.
We definitely could have done better, but at least we had a girls team
this year, said Kennedy. The girls tried
their best and we did have a chance to
go to provincials, it didnt work out.
Kennedy added that despite the shortfall at zones the girls remained positive
and had a lot of fun on the course.
She felt like she couldve done more
in her overall game, but a solid shot on
good holes here and there would have
made the difference in her game.
I definitely had an off day, she said.
But if I were to go back, I wouldve
shaken the bad holes and hopefully had
a couple good shots on my better holes
and wouldve made a difference.

The Strathmore Spartans golf team had a strong

showing at zones on Sept. 23 in Cochrane. The
girls team missed provincials by a mere stroke,
while Korbin Allan will be heading to provincials
for the second consecutive year.

The provincials were played on Sept.

28 and 29 in Grande Prairie. The results
were not available as of press time.

We were starting to put multiple plays together, said Westgard. We had long rallies where
we were making defensive plays
that we wouldnt have made in
the last tournament. Our serving had improved immensely.
I think the first tournament we
had quite a few of the girls who
had trouble focusing putting the
ball in. We had little to none (in
the home tournament), issues,
but very few.
Westgard praises some of the
players for their serving, by saying that there were a few girls
that went on runs of five or more
serves and one that got up to 10.

The Strathmore Spartans junior varsity volleyball teams
showed tremendous improvement over the course of their
home tournaments and got
praise from their coaches for developing their games quickly.
Despite losing in the pool
cross over game, girls head
coach Carrie Westgard thought
her team had improved immensely in many facets of the
game and the play became better from the previous tournament.

She added the teamwork was

nice to see, and the confidence
coming with it.
Theyre starting to believe
they can do their stuff, said
Westgard.
Theyre starting to believe we
want them to improve and not
necessarily just win. The focus
is not winning but to improve
as a person personally and as a
team.
As a group they learned a few
tips from other teams that can
help their overall games.
We learned what we needed
to work on, said Westgard.

Bantam Badgers stay strong

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Community Football Association
bantam team continued to stay undefeated last Saturday but the seniors and peewees were not fortunate to come away with victories in the latter half
of the triple-header.
Despite a lot of penalties taken, the bantam team
was able to play a fundamentally sound game on
both sides of the ball and were fortunate enough to
come up with big plays at pivotal times in the game.
It went good, said head coach Sean Seafoot.
The past few games weve been trying to concentrate on our penalties and thats the only thing I
can say bad about this game is that we just had
too many penalties. Offensively, they werent playing a safety back. Right at the halftime we threw
that bomb there and that was pretty much the nail
in the coffin.
He added defense and special teams allowed

them to run up the score and more than anything

field position proved to be key in strategy.
Thats what the game is all about is getting good
field position, he said. If youre down on their side
for most of the game than you should be scoring
more points.
Even though the team is undefeated, Seafoot
stressed they shouldnt get too comfortable as a lot
of work still needs to be done. But he liked that the
playbook is starting to take shape.
We want to keep getting better and better each
week, said Seafoot. Weve put a lot into offense
these last two weeks but we have our whole offensive package in pretty much. We wanted to work on
our passing game this week, just with the receivers
all staying on one side and it turned out to look
good and made the defense think a little bit and
thats what we wanted.
The bantams will not be playing any games this
weekend as they will be going into the bye week.

Bisons look to versatility this season

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

After a month of hard decisions came to a conclusion, the CFR Bisons have
announced their much-anticipated 20-man roster that
will lead the charge this season.
A total of 102 hopeful athletes tried out for the team
over a one-month span.
While picking the team,
speed was a priority, which
was blatant during the camp.
Then, after a few weeks of
deliberation, the roster was
finally released earlier last
week.
I think we like our team
speed, thats one of things
we identified in camp, said
Henry. You got to assess
your group and say what
are we missing here, those
last few guys were pretty
role specific, said head
coach Sandy Henry. They
had a specific type of game
that we knew we needed
that maybe some other guys
didnt have.

A key element for this team

will be speed, the ability to
skate and receive a pass at a
full stride, and to be physical
on the opposition by finishing their checks at every opportunity.
I think were fairly physical, said Henry. We have
the ability to close time and
space and get our checks
finished. When we do that
were forcing a lot of pucks
into spots that the other
teams dont necessarily want
to put them.
He does not expect the
team to peak right away,
but the goal will be to be to
develop and work towards
being the best team at the
end of the season going into
playoffs.
The most critical thing
is developing the team and
playing all 20 guys, said
Henry.
Are we going to give up
some wins doing that? I
dont know if we do. If we
do, so be it. Were not worried about that. Obviously,
we got to stay in the race

we want to be a team that peaks in

February when playoff time comes and
just get on that roll we had last year. I
think thats a perfect scenario, develop,
develop, develop and peak when it
matters.
Newly appointed captain Kyle Gordon will be leading the herd this season with hopes of carrying over the
success from last seasons run.
Its nice to be recognized like that,
said Gordon. Im just happy to be a
part of it with five other vets. Were all
going to be leaders and were all vocal
guys in the dressing room and hope to
keep the guys happy. The only thing I
can bring is helping them get to where
we were last year. At the start of the
year, last year, I was kind of like some
of the guys here. Not tied into the system yet. Our job as leaders is to bring
them into the system as quick as we
can and make sure everyone fits where
theyre suppose to.
Gordon will carry forward his previous experience of working hard and
now knows how hard you have to
work to win games and out battle the
other teams.
Local rookie Cole Clayton was left
in awe of being named to the 20-man
roster.
Its an awesome feeling, said Clayton. This is the next step from bantam triple-A, coming here and working
hard all summer to make this team. To
finally make this team is an awesome
feeling.
The Bisons will open up the season
up on Oct. 2 at home against the Calgary Royals at 8 p.m. and will play the
Medicine Hat Tigers on Oct. 4 (2 p.m.).

Spartans gain
experience
Continued from Page 21

Some of things that other teams are
doing that maybe we are just a little
behind on that we dont have experience with. It looked like some of the
teams had more game play experience
with, more touches. We had a couple
of instances where were still surprised
when the ball comes over and once we
get a few more games under our belt
that wont happen.
Middle Pacey Strangling Wolf thought
the team played well, and the positivity on the court has helped the players
immensely in their performance.
Theres a few girls like me, Im new
this year, and weve welcomed each
other with open arms, said Strangling
Wolf.
We did pretty good this weekend, it
was fun. Sometimes we say its really
not about winning, its just about having fun and play as hard as you can
and when were on the best we have
contests who can hit the hardest and
who can serve the longest.
According to boys head coach Darrell Hargrove, the boys last place finish was no indication of how the team
played as they played strong at many
positions.
Overall not bad at all, said Hargroves.
Result-wise its a little bit hard to
say, we finished last but thats not how
we played. The boys, being inexperienced players have grown so much already. Theyve figured out the system,
what their job is and started to execute
a lot more this weekend.

Crowther continuing to develop

September 20, 2015 SHOW AND GYMKHANA RESULTS

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Kevin Mertz continues to run a phenomenal cross-country program at
Crowther Memorial Junior High School
and this year is no exception, as the
runners are becoming stronger athletes.
It looks awesome, said Mertz. We
have quite a few returning athletes,
which is great to see. Then we have a
big group of new ones. Its a fast team
this year, were trying to get an official list but we may have somewhere
around 50 runners.
Mertz said the number of runners
who have signed up is a great sign.
Numbers will be lighter in the Grade
9 category, which is normal, but he
is pleased to see the runners that are
coming out and trying the sport for the
first time.
We actually do have a group just trying it out to see if they like it, just learn-

A great show and gymkhana was had by all. We are down to only one events left for the 2015
season. We had a couple new faces, and lots of familiar faces out at todays event. So far 2015
has brought in some new members into the group for what is our 36th year of operation as a family
riding club. If you are interested in joining us for some fun times & experiences please check out
our calendar and come on out.
Results to the third placing of the competitions are as follows:

ing how to run which is super cool,

said Mertz. Its all about if those kids
can come and enjoy it and improve and
really that is our main goal.
He has seen a lot of multi-sport athletes come out and compete, which
will only enhance their training and
will in turn help with in the long run
in other sports.
(There are) lots of kids who are getting in shape for hockey or for basketball, (and) trying to do volleyball and
cross country right now. Long-term
athlete development says try it all and
see what you like, and lots of the times
hockey players develop certain muscle
groups more than others running
can compliment that.
In preparation for the two runs, the
kids will run four times a week, with
the focus being on speed and strength,
longevity and race strategies.
The teams first meet will be Sept. 29
in Okotoks and the zone meet will be
on Oct. 6 in Sundre.

Badgers battle in busy weekend

Continued from Page 21

Clinton Beans peewee team wasnt
as fortunate, however, as penalties cost
them a victory where the team was unable to get into a groove, allowing Red
Deer to capitalize on the situation and
walking away with a 60-28 victory.
We did have a lot mental errors today, said Bean. Its tough because we
have such a big team. Trying to get everyone timed, its just tough. For most
the part, you look at a lot of other teams
like them, they rotate four five guys that
play offense and defense. Weve got two
sets of offense and two sets of defense

because of the amount of kids we have

and thats awesome in community (football) and to be competitive, its tough.
He tipped his hat off to his defense
saying they played a great game but
questioned their length of time on the
field and the offensive turnovers.
I think we turned the ball over four
or five times which is frustrating on offense, said Bean. When you do that and
they score points, you get down quick.
The peewees will be back on the field
against Stettler (1 p.m.) in Strathmore on
Oct. 3.
Meanwhile, the Senior Badgers lost
56-14 to Sundre.

Spartans football playing opponents hard

JUSTIN SEWARD

The Strathmore Spartans high school
football team caught the number tworanked Crescent Heights team off
guard with their resilient play at the
high school last Friday night but were
defeated 27-7.
Head coach Travis Gorski could not
complain about the effort that was put
forth throughout the game.
We played right with them, said
Gorski. We controlled the ball most
of the game. It was a good sign that
we play at that level and gained a lot

of confidence. We made a few mental

mistakes at key times, that allowed
them to get points or took points off
the board for us.
He added that those errors were on
both sides of the ball, but compared
to a couple of weeks ago, theyve seen
a dramatic improvement in lessening
them.
According to Gorski everyone, including the coaching staff, can keep
learning and develop the playbook
more.
Us as coaches have to keep learning
and push the envelope, he said.
And keep developing the play-

Going forward, the attitude of the

Kings experience highs and lows in opening weekend

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings sandwiched a
pair of difficult losses with an impressive win over the defending champions to open the 2015-2016 hockey
campaign.
The local junior-B team suffered a
4-1 on home ice on Sept. 26 before a
hard-fought 6-5 win in Coaldale the
following night. The Kings then fell 5-3
to the Banff Bears on Sept. 29 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
The Kings had hopes of sending the
400 fans home happy at their home
opener on Saturday night but the Cochrane Generals came in and spoiled
the party as they walked away with a
4-1 win.
The Kings were giving up chances
through the night and failed to generate any offense. On top of it all, the
penalties mounted high and the team
was unable to recover.
I think the discipline factor definitely factored into the outcome of
tonights game, said co-coach Joel
Robinson. We played a disciplined
first two periods, which helped us gain
momentum in our favour and when we

did have the momentum in our favour

we were getting pucks to the net, driving wide, putting pucks deep on their
defensemen.
Then we get into that problem of
getting back into the box, let them take
advantage of us
on the power
play and I think
they
scored
three
power
play goals and if
we skated with
that team fiveon-five, we can
beat them any
night.
Robinson felt
the players continued to get
used to one another, but the game
showcased some positives.
We had some good things we saw
tonight, he said. And there was some
line combos we didnt like. Pre-season,
you work out kinks, but now you have
your regular guys, youre definitely trying to find some combos. I think (Cole)
Busslinger (and Dylan) Smith played a
great game for us in the bottom six tonight just by being a presence, playing

Hockey program helping

Claytons career
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore hockey player Cole Clayton has seen growth in his game, due
in large part to the extra ice time he
has been entitled to through the hockey program at Holy Cross Collegiate.
The first year we had it, it was
pretty competitive. There was lots of
good guys there, said Clayton. I have
a good buddy, me and him stayed at
the school, a few other guys switched
to high school and we just keep all the
extra ice time in the
hockey program. We
scrimmage every time,
theres a lot of game
time and you just get
to work on your little
skills, and keep developing your shot and
hands.
He accredits his
hockey
program
coach, Jason Burns, for
making the ice times
feel like a competitive
atmosphere to make
the players better.
He pushed us and
made it competitive, said Clayton. He
was pretty laid back, but he made sure
we werent bending the rules. He kept
the pace up wasnt a big guy on
threats or anything, he just made sure
we kept going.
When he was drafted by the Medicine Hat Tigers last spring, Clayton was
humbled by the support he got from
the schools staff.
It was pretty cool, he said. The
principal came down to congratulate
me right after because hes a big hockey fan. He was following the draft and
one of my buddies ( Joel Krahenbil)
got drafted later in the day after me
and congratulated us both. He (principal) said whenever you need to talk
hockey, you just come talk to us. It
was a pretty cool feeling knowing you
have all the support from your school.
Going from the bantam AAA Rocky
Mountain Raiders to the Western
Hockey League is a big step, and with

some determination he will hopefully

be a regular contributor on the Tigers
roster next season. He has nothing but
positives to take out of the recent Tigers camp.
All the guys they draft go and they
had a team bonding thing, said Clayton. All the older guys are super good
to you. The whole organization is just
a class organization. They always treat
their players good. They just want to
see the best from you and keep telling
you what to improve on.
The Tigers had mentioned to him that
they liked his strong
season with the Raiders and their run to the
Westerns, but now he
has to build upon that
and have another consistent campaign with
the CFR Bisons.
Medicine Hats Senior Director of Player
Development
Daren
Kruger has liked the
development of the
15-year-old rearguard
and added that he had
only gotten better as
camp went on.
After watching him a lot of times
last year, considering the year they
had, (he) had a real good year with
Rocky Mountain, said Kruger. Obviously he was one of the defensemen
really highly rated in the draft. Were
thrilled where we did get him. Hes
been gifted with some size already,
possesses a lot of patience, hes got his
head up, makes good passes. The only
thing he needs to work on is getting
his footwork a little bit quicker.
Kruger thought he found his game
and gained confidence in the exhibition season, and really thought the extra ice time was of benefit to him.
You can never go wrong with extra
practice and extra ice time, said Kruger. I think with his time in the high
school and the extra ice time, helping
out there tells a lot about his character
as well and the family. Theyve done a
great job in raising Cole and what hes
able to do.

the body, using the energy when they

could.
He added it was really nice to see
secondary scoring and believes that
first line scoring will come. The plan remains to keep some lines together and
shuffle others
around.
Im going
to keep the
horses together that are going, said Robinson.
You
look at (Chris)
Williams, (Lucas)
Jones
and
( Jacen)
Bracko line,
they were effective when they were in the offensive zone, so Im going to keep that
line together.
Rookie forward Busslinger thought
the team played well considering it
was their first time together in a game
situation.
In the next few games well all get
used to each others habits, strengths
and weaknesses, said Busslinger.
Well move forward from there I
guess. We really struggled in the defensive zone, but that all just comes
with time because none of us played
together before.
Smith scored the lone goal in the
loss.
Kings manager Dale Peters thought
the team took awhile to get their legs
under them on Sunday night in Coaldale, but once they found them, the
offense started coming and the Kings
edged the defending champions 6-5.
I think it took us the first period

to get our legs together and get our

mind focused on hockey, said Peters.
Once we got going, we got some pretty good goaltending in the first period
to save our butts. We played very well
in the second period. In third period
we played great until about the last
five minutes where they got a couple
of quick ones on us and we steadied
down (Ryan) Grasdahl and (Blake)
Bishop helped us out.
He added for the second game of the
season the offense was well rounded
with four lines moving the puck well
and pressured well in the offensive
zone.
Smith, Busslinger, Bracko, Bishop,
Jones, and Tyler Rivest scored in the
win.
The Kings played three games in
four nights, and were back home on
Tuesday night to play host to the Banff
Academy Bears. Both teams played
an evenly-matched game until the last
three minutes of the third.
The Kings were penalized and the
Bears were able to capitalize on the
power play and scored on an empty
netter to win 5-3.
The penalty with three minutes to
go hurt us, said Peters. I think we got
caught on a lot of 3-on- 2s and we got
pressing in their end zone and when
that happens, you get back in to your
end zone, you dont have any necessary outlet to come out if you have no
players back. That was a big part of the
game and I think well get better.
The Kings will play three games in
three nights this weekend starting in
High River on Oct. 2 (8:15 p.m.), at
home versus Ponoka on Oct. 3 (8 p.m.)
and in Blackfalds the following day at
3:30 p.m.

Betty Carol

January 17, 1944

- September 28, 2015.
Betty Bareham passed away at
12:24 am Monday, September 28th at the age of
71 surrounded by her family. On the evening of
the Super Blood Moon lunar eclipse, a beautiful,
kind, generous woman peacefully left this world
after a long battle with cancer. She will be lovingly
remembered by her husband Harold Bareham of
54 years, her children Darwin, Danny (Trish), Dean
(Shelley) and Renee (Scott), her grandkids, Sienna,
Dakota, Hawkins, Grayson, Damien (Erin), Danielle, Lisa and her great grandchildren, Gabrielle,
Patrick, Alexandra, Athaliah, Rillian, Endon, and
Zion. She is survived by her brother Ted Shanks,
and pre-deceased by her brothers Don and Jack,
her sister Shirley, her parents Pearl and Wilfred
Shanks. She will be missed by numerous in-laws,
cousins and friends. Bettys kids were the center
of her universe, and she lived for those moments
when we were all together for big family gatherings. She loved her bingo (Bingo Betty), playing the
slots at the casino, and a good burnt wiener. Betty
worked for Wilson Stationers for 20 years, then for
BMO, and finally at the Red Carrot where she got
the nickname, the carrot lady. A Celebration of her
Life will be held at the Strathmore Legion (230 Veterans Ave) on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 2:00
pm. A graveside service will be held at Mountain
View Memorial Gardens on Monday, October 5,
2015 at 1:00 pm. 1515-100th Street SE, Calgary.

Beloved father and grandfather,

its 20 years since youve been gone.
God gave us the strength to carry on.
The things we feel so deeply, are the hardest things to say,
but we, your family love you, in a very special way.
They say that memories are golden, well that may be true,
but we never wanted memories, we only wanted you.
Its said time heals all sorrows, we know that isnt so,
because it hurts as much today, as it did 20 years ago.
If tears could build a stairway, and heartaches make a lane,
wed walk the path to Heaven, and bring you home again.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Always in our hearts

Gary, Kim, Justin, Jennifer Geeraert

Mortgage Matters by Strathmores Mortgage Specialist

Mortgages versus credit cards are you at your limit?
Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
