Best Teacher
Remembering beloved teacher and friend Martha Claire Fitzner

Martha Claire was part
of our September St. Pauls
prep team along with the
cousins ( team includes
Sunny Whitaker, who is not
her cousin) for Loaves and
Fishes. We tried a new menu
which included rice in the
dish. Now, Martha Claire was
THE BEST at making perfect
minute rice so she was in
charge of that part. She was
Martha Claire Fitzner making it at home. We told
her to make 72 servings. She
walked in with enough rice
for China. She had made 72 cups of raw rice instead of
cooked.

Martha Claire gave me her personal cell number so
I wouldnt have to haul my small child and his heavy
car seat into Heritage to pick up my daughter, she
would just bring her to me. The only stipulation was
that she get to hold and snuggle my baby in church.
She was an amazing woman.

Not only was Martha Claire Fitzner a wonderful
educational teacher, but also a loving, devoted Aunt
MarC to me, her other Godchildren and all her
Grand-Godchildren. She never missed wishing us
a Happy Birthday, making the Holidays joyous and
special, participating in all our important milestones
at Church, cheering us on in the extracurricular
events we chose to love, and guiding us through lifes
milestones of marriage, babies and parenthood. Aunt
MarC knew how to comfort, understand and love others, and she modeled those qualities each day.

Martha Claire was a special person who was always

thinking of someone else. She loved to cook and was
constantly sharing food with friends. She loved teaching and said that she was bored during the summer.
My daughter was one of her many godchildren and
she wrote her a long letter right before she moved to
college. She just did the extra things that we all mean
to get around to doing. She was active in everything
she was involved in and was an asset to each organization. Martha Claire just made the world a better place
to live by all she did.

by seeing her embrace the children and let them have
closeness with her while she was reading. Then, I
asked her how she could possibly stand to have her
hair put in knots and teased so high. She replied, I
get my hair styled every day. If those children learn
to love reading, they can fix my hair however they
want.
And those children did learn to love reading. They
learned to love learning. And they LOVED Mrs.
Fitzner.

Mrs. Martha Claire Fitzner was the heartbeat of

Heritage Elementary, and her memory will remain
with us forever. She touched so many lives with both
her joy for teaching and love for each child in her
class.

what Martha Claire said first to me many times when
we were discussing a problem...personal or work related. And I knew that she would be praying...and that
she had faith that it all would, as she said, work out!

my door to see if I was wearing maroon for Maroon
Friday for MSU fans! She would scold me if I didnt
have it on! She loved her Bulldogs!!

Martha Claire was a life-long family friend, and
when my son, Mark, was in her 1st grade class, I
would occasionally peek in to see what the students
were doing. One day I observed Martha Claire in her
chair reading a book with all the children gathered
around her, as close as they could get to her. A number of the students were playing with her hair, teasing

beloved and respected. She was a fine and skillful
teacher that students loved personally a tremendous combination.

My daughter Leslie and I were traveling to Columbus this summer to visit my mother. On the way,
Leslie asked me if Miss Martha Claire would make
her some of her famous pimento cheese. I texted MC
and by the time we arrived in Columbus, she had a
Tupperware ready for us. Leslie took the pimento
cheese back to Dallas and when she had finished it,
she asked me if she should return the Tupperware to
MC. I said no, we will start a tradition: every time
we go back to Columbus, we will take the Tupperware
back with us and have Martha Claire fill it up again.
Sadly, the tradition never got started but Leslie and I
both agree that we will keep the Tupperware in memory of Martha Claire.
