Course Description
The strategic human resources management (SHRM) course considers that money, materials and
machines are meaningless without the wise use of the single most important component of
productivity: HUMAN. SHRM offers a framework for students to know as to how the general
managers implement best HR practices in their organizations The course introduces the strategic
perspective to be taken in harnessing the human resources of an organization.

This course is about both the design and execution of human resource management strategies. This
course has two central themes: (1) How to think systematically and strategically about aspects of
managing the organizations human assets, and (2) What really needs to be done to implement these
policies and to achieve competitive advantage.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
1. Explain the meaning of strategic management and give an overview of its conceptual framework
of HR strategy.
2. Describe meaning, aims. approaches to, and Criteria for an effective Strategic Human Resource
Management
3. Know about developing; conducting and implementing HR Strategies
4. Know how about Training and Development; Learning Principles; and Trends in Training and
Development
5. Define Performance Management, its purpose, scope and process of Performance Management
6. Describe Reward Strategy, its contents and guiding principles of Reward Strategy of an
organization
7. Know the Organization strategy about Employee Relations, and the HRM Approach to Employee
Relations; and Formulating Employee Relations Strategies.

Students are expected to utilize broad-based resource material available to them. However, following
references for the workshops are also recommended:
1. Strategic Human Resource Management A Guide to Action by Michael Armstrong,
Kogan Page, London and Philadelphia; and
2. Strategic Human Resource Management by Alan Nankervis, Robert Compton, and
Marian Bird: Thomson
Additional material/experiential exercises will be used from various sources and books on Human
Resource Management throughout the semester at the discretion of the course teacher. Workshops
outlines are given at the end, which may be changed by teacher or university during the semester.
