THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS AT THE

CCC
A new exhibit featuring the artwork of Salem artist, D. Stevens
Burgess, will be on display during October and November in
the first floor Benn Room of the Salem Courthouse Community
Center. Stevens was born in New Delhi, India and studied art in
Bangkok, Thailand and New York. His exhibit contains impressionistic work focusing on land, water and the natural world.
His studies are creations of his own imagination, and he no longer
uses points of reference in any of his pieces. His tones are subtle,
and his paintings draw the viewer into the landscape in a most
relaxing manner. Stevens has exhibited his work in several area
galleries with this being his fourth exhibit at the CCC. The Benn
room is handicap accessible and open to the public.
VENDORS NEEDED FOR THE CCCS ART AND CRAFT

HARRY ORLYKS WORK WILL BE EXHIBITED AT
MCCARTEES BARN in Salem, New York from through October 31st. The exhibition of fifty paintings, curated by Evera
Sue Clary, provides an in-depth look at the artists work from
1985-2015, which embodies the pure essence of landscape painting, Orlyks paintings are rooted in the seasonal landscapes of
Washington County. They have echoes of the Hudson River
School, but filtered through the use of color and composition of
the Abstract Expressionists. They are strikingly beautiful. The
winter paintings are composed of a pallet of umber, browns and
eggshell whites that capture the barren beauty of the land. Marmalade oranges and cobalt blues evoke the vividness of a hot
summer afternoon. Orlyks work is ambitious. Because he produces a painting a day his work transcends predictable landscape
painting. He calls it a portrait of days: an evolving visual journal of sunlight, land and his own emotional response to a sense
of place. The land is a friend of mine. I enjoy sitting down and
listening to it. His painting process is unconventional. Every
afternoon he gets in his van, carefully chooses his location, clamps
his canvas to the steering wheel, and paints. He always asks permission of the people who own the land. As a result he forges a
connection with them. Orlyk was born in 1947 in Troy, New
York. He attended graduate school at University of Nebraska at
Lincoln, where he was taught by a number of influential Nebraskan painters. For over forty years he has consistently shown his
work across the country, including the Carrie Haddad Gallery in
Hudson, New York and the Beamesderfer Gallery in Highland
Park, New Jersey, as well as internationally. In 1995 he was the
recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Salem, New
York with his family. For further inquires please contact Evera
Sue Clary, McCartees Barn, 518 854 3857 sueclary@hotmail.com

THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING BREAST CANCER EARLY

The goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Screening
refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. Early detection
means using an approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed earlier than otherwise might have occurred. Breast cancers that
are found because they are causing symptoms tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast.
In contrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. The size
of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis (outlook) of a
woman with this disease. Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and
that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.
Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast
cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.
