1. Allgemeines
keine besonderen Vorkehrungen erforderlich.

1. Introduction
Please study these instructions, reading them completely and attentively, before you use the
unit for the first time. This will guarantee that you will be able to exploit all the facilities of
your new battery charger. The warnings and safety notes are particularly important. Please
store these instructions in a safe place, and be sure to pass them on to the new owner if you
ever dispose of the charger.
In the ULTRAMAT 10 you have acquired a mature product with an excellent performance. It incorporates
the latest semi-conductor technology, controlled by a high-performance RISC micro-processor, to
provide superior charging characteristics combined with simple operation and optimum reliability.
These features can normally be expected only from much more expensive units.
The ULTRAMAT 10 represents a reliable method of charging sintered Nickel-Cadmium (NC, Ni-Cd)
packs, Nickel-Metal-Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, Lithium-Polymer (Li-Po) and Lithium-Ion (Li-Io) batteries.
These sealed, gas-tight batteries have proved excellent for our purposes in RC models. They are
mechanically robust, can be used in any attitude and are generally highly reliable. These batteries
require no special measures for storage apart from protecting the cells from becoming deep-discharged.
If you are using Lithium packs be sure to read and observe the information supplied by the battery
manufacturer. Please handle these cells with great care, as incorrect handling or mistreatment can
result in an explosion!
Note
It is important always to observe the charging instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer,
and to keep to the recommended charge currents and times. Do not fast-charge batteries unless
the manufacturer states expressly that they are suitable for the high currents which flow during
these processes. Please bear in mind that new batteries do not reach their full capacity until they
have been charged and discharged several times. With new batteries you may also encounter
problems with premature charge termination. Whenever you wish to use a new battery it therefore

attempt to carry out any battery discharge or battery maintenance programs via the
transmitters integral charge socket. The charge socket is not suitable for this purpose.
When you set a particular current for charging, the charger only supplies that current if the
value does not exceed the units technical capacity. If you set a charge current which the
ULTRAMAT 10 cannot deliver because it falls outside its technical limits, the unit
automatically reduces the current to the maximum possible value. In this case the screen
displays the charge current which is actually flowing, alternating with the warning message
MAX.

6. Charge programs
The various facilities of the charger are divided up into two program groups which you can select
by pressing the ENTER button. The sequence is shown in the flow chart below.
Note: If a battery is connected to the charger, it is not possible to switch to a different program
group. This is an intentional safety feature, designed to make it impossible to switch accidentally to
a charge program which is unsuitable for the battery you are using when a charge process is ac
tually in progress. You can interrupt the charge process at any time by pressing the MODE button.
Ni-Cd / Ni-MH battery programs: for charging 1 - 10 cells, charge current variable within the range

(gas generation), overheating and even to explosion of the cell. If the final charge voltage of 4.1 V/
cell (Lithium-Ion) or 4.2 V / cell (Lithium-Polymer) is exceeded by more than 1%, the lithium ions in
the cell start to change into metallic lithium. The lithium reacts very violently with water in the
electrolyte, and it is this which can lead to the cell exploding. On the other hand it is also important
that the final charge voltage should not be too low, otherwise the capacity of the Li-Ion battery cell
is significantly reduced. A value of just 0.1 V below the threshold equates to a capacity loss of
around 7%. Deep-discharging any lithium battery results in rapid capacity loss. This effect is
irreversible, so it is vitally important to avoid discharging the battery to a point below 2.5 V / cell.
Caution: the set cell type, cell capacity and cell count (number of cells) must always be correct
for the battery to be charged; there must never be any discrepancy - explosion hazard! If your
battery is fitted with an integral charge mechanism, it must not be connected to this charger.
Charge your Lithium batteries only on a non-flammable base surface.

This charge program is only suitable for charging Lithium-Ion batteries with a nominal cell voltage
of 3.6 V and Lithium-Polymer batteries with a nominal cell voltage of 3.7 V.
The main outstanding feature of Lithium batteries is their much higher capacity compared to other
battery types. This is an important advantage, but it is balanced by the requirement to handle the
batteries differently, especially with respect to charging and discharging, if the danger of using
them is to be minimized. There are important basic rules governing the handling of these cells, and
they must be observed at all times. For additional information and safety notes please study the
battery manufacturers published specifications. The fundamental rule is that Lithium-based
batteries may ONLY be charged using special chargers which are designed
voltage
and set for the actual battery type (final charge voltage, capacity). The method
of charging these batteries is different to the one employed with Ni-Cd or Nicurrent
MH batteries, and is based on a so-called constant current / constant voltage
process. The charge current required varies according to the battery
charge time
capacity, and is set automatically by the charger. Lithium batteries are
generally charged at 1 C (1 C charge current = capacity charge current. Example: with a battery
capacity of, say, 1500 mAh the corresponding 1 C charge rate is 1500 mA, or 1.5 A). For this
reason the value which has to be entered on the charger is the battery capacity, rather than the
charge current. Once the battery reaches the final charge voltage appropriate to the specific
battery type, the charger automatically reduces the charge current in order to prevent the final
charge voltage being exceeded. If the battery manufacturer states a charge current lower than 1
C, the capacity charge current must be reduced accordingly.

Problems with mis-handling of batteries:
Overcharging a Lithium-Ion battery involves a very great risk. Overcharging causes gassing

First you must select the Lithium type using the INC / DEC buttons,
while the type (in brackets) flashes in the top line of the screen.
For Lithium-Ion batteries select Li (Io), for Lithium-Polymer and
Manganese cells select Li (Po).
Press the ENTER button to confirm your choice; the bottom line of
the display will now start to flash.
The next step is to set the capacity of the cells you wish to charge.
You can set any value within the range 100 mAh to 9900 mAh in increments of 100 mAh.
The charger automatically calculates a charge current of 1 C from
this.
At this point the Lithium battery pack can be connected to the charger. The display now stops flashing.
Press the ENTER button to move to the Cell Count menu, where
you have to enter the number of cells to be charged.
The charger calculates the cell count automatically from the voltage of the pack, but it is essential that you check the figure, and correct it using the INC / DEC buttons if necessary.
It is absolutely essential that you set this value correctly,
otherwise the battery pack could explode!!
Now press the ENTER button to start the charge process; the
charge current starts at 0.00 A and rises slowly to the set charge
capacity limit.
Please dont be surprised if the charge current you have set is not
reached, because the charger constantly monitors the battery voltage in order to prevent the cells gassing.
At the end of the charge process the unit automatically reduces the
charge current, so that the battery is reliably charged to 100% of
full capacity.
During the charge process you can display the charge time and
the charged-in capacity by pressing one of the INC / DEC buttons.

The Ultramat 10 features three special functions which are designed to make charging 1 - 10 NiCd / Ni-MH cells and 1 - 4 Li-Po / Li-Io cells more convenient and - above all - safer.
The first of these is the facility to adjust the Delta Peak sensitivity (voltage drop) for Ni-Cd / Ni-MH
cells. This is important, as it makes the Ultramat 10 future-proof by allowing it to be adjusted to suit
later generations of battery cells.
The Safe Timer provides an additional level of safety, and - if set correctly - protects the battery
from being overcharged. The Buzzer menu enables you to switch the audible signals on and off.

cell voltage
When the charge process is started the battery voltage initially rises continuously, but as the pack
approaches full capacity it begins to heat up. This in turn causes the battery voltage to fall slightly
(Delta-V). The charger detects and assesses the voltage decline. It is possible to adjust the sensitivity
or trigger voltage (in mV per cell!) of the automatic cut-off circuit for Ni-Cd batteries. A practical
range of values has proved to be 3 25 mV / cell. Higher voltages often lead to overcharging of the
battery, whereas a lower voltage will often result in premature termination of the charge process.
We recommend that you check the information supplied by your battery manufacturer, then carry
out a series of test-charges to establish the optimum value for your battery.

The ULTRAMAT 10 incorporates a wide range of protective and monitoring systems designed to
check the chargers functions and monitor the state of its electronics. If any of the units limit values
are exceeded, in some cases the units settings are automatically reduced (e.g. charge current); in
others the charge process is switched off (e.g. car battery almost flat).
The liquid crystal screen displays the cause of the error. Most error message are self-explanatory,
but you may find the following list useful when fault-finding. The warning message and the audible
warning signal can be switched off by pressing the MODE button.

The two-line liquid-crystal screen displays in a clear form the important information generated during the charge process. The information remains visible on-screen until you disconnect the battery that is being charged. Once you press the MODE button to charge another battery, the previously displayed values are erased, and cannot be called up again.

correspondant 1C = 1500 mA (1,5 A).
