Tipping advice from the New York City Tourist Office:
Dear visitor, welcome to New York City!
Depending on where you are visiting from, tipping may mean different things to you. In order to save
you a lot of stress and trouble, here is some information on how to tip in New York City.
1. Who should you tip?
For most Americans, tipping is second nature, they are accustomed to it. In the USA, it is customary to
give a tip in restaurants and bars (sometimes including takeaways), hotels, hair salons and taxis.

2. Why should you tip?

Unlike in China, for example, where tipping is regarded as insulting and where employees wages are
set by the government, tipping is a vital part of some employees income in the United States, even
more so in New York City. It is indispensable to complement the low minimum wage of restaurant
workers for instance ($ 2.13 an hour). Some of you may have decided to stop tipping altogether. Please
know this is not an acceptable solution in New York City. You may expect some very angry reactions if
you dont tip or if you undertip.
3. How much should you tip?
Whether you come from abroad or other parts of the United States, be aware that you should tip more
in New York City. Although one euro per person may be an acceptable tip in French restaurants, or 1015% of the bill in the UK, in New York City be prepared to leave at least a 20% tip.
4. Exceptions
The increase in the amount of tips and places where they are expected has led some businesses to
change their practices. One New York restaurant has banned tipping once and for all. Some restaurants
have decided to replace the tip by a fixed optional service charge. Be sure to check what is applicable
in the restaurant where you are.
Now that you know all about tipping, we sincerely hope you enjoy your stay in the Big Apple!
