Aetana

This dance is from Santa Cruz, Marinduque. It is snappy, short, and always delights the
audience as well as the performers. The “jaleo” and “lamano” (shaking hands) are the
two interesting figures of this dance.
COSTUME. Girls wear “balintawak” and boys, “barong tagalong” and white trousers.
FORMATION. Dancers stand in two parallel lines facing the audience about six feet
apart. Girls stand at partner’s right side. From one to any number of pairs may take part.

INTRODUCTION
Music Introduction.

Take three steps forward (R,L,R), arms hanging loosely at the sides (ets. 1,2,3). Points
L foot in front. Raise R arm high in fifth and L bent forward at shoulder level with elbow
in front (cts. 1,2,3)……………… 2M.

Music A.
Partners face each other.
Dancers do the following steps going the same direction toward the audience.
(a.) Girls- Step R foot sideward in second position (ct. 1), brush L forward
(ct. 2), step L close to R foot in 1st position (ct. 3). R arm in reverse
“T” position and L bent in front at shoulder level. …….1M.
Boys- Do the same, starting with the L foot. Reverse the arm

(b.) Repeat (a) two times more……………………………...2M.
(c.) Girls- Step R foot sideward (ct. 1), brush L forward and tap close to R
foot (ct. 3). Boys do the same starting with the L foot….1M.

(a) Girl turns back to partner. Starting with the R foot, take eight waltz steps
backward moving in a clockwise direction. Arms in lateral position at
shoulder level, moving sideward R and L alternately. Finish facing

Boy faces partner. Starting with the R foot, take eight waltz steps forward in a
clockwise direction. Arm positions the same as the girls. Finish with backs toward
partners………………..8M.
(b) Girls- Repeat the same movement as boys in (a) moving
counterclockwise……………8M.
Boys repeat the same movement as girls ion (a) moving
counterclockwise……………8M.
(c) Partners join right hands, keeping elbows relaxed and straight at shoulder
-level. Free hand of the girl holding the skirt and the boy’s free hand on waist.
Starting with the R foot, take eight waltz steps clockwise……….8M.
(c) Drop right hands and join left hands. Repeat (c) going counterclockwise,
starting with the R foot………… 8M.

(a) “Jalco”
Partner face left. Place right hands on waists (free hand of girl holding
skirt, boys’s free hand on waist). Go near each other so that the right elbows
are almost touching each other. Look at partner over the right shoulder.
Take eight steps (as in figure I (a)) moving forward and going clockwise,
starting with the R foot……………………………………….8M.
(b) Face right about and reverse hand positions. Look at partner over the left
shoulder. Starting with the R foot, repeat (a) moving counterclockwise….8M.
(c) Repeat all (a and b)……………………………………………8M.
Partners finish facing each other about four feet apart.

(a) Shaking hands.


Step R foot forward (cts. 1,2) hop on the same foot and raise the L
in rear with the knee bent (cts. 3). Shake hands (right hands) with the
partner and nod to each other on count

Release hands. Step L foot backward (cts. 1, 2,), turn right about
pivoting on the L foot, at the same time raising the R knee in front with
toes pointed downward and swiftly describe a circle clockwise with the R
foot while in this position (ct.3). do this simultaneously with the turning

(b) Repeat (a) facing away from partner. Omit the shaking of hands. Girl holding
skirt and boy’s hands on waist……………………………………………2M..
(c) Repeat all (a and b) three times more, facing to and away from partner

(d) Face right. It sets of three of four pairs. Take eight waltz steps clockwise
forming a big circle. Starting with the R foot. Arms in lateral position at
shoulder level moving sideward R and L

(e) Turn right about and repeat (d) counterclockwise. Finish in proper places and
bow to partner on the last measure………………8M.
