each other, allowing another to speak and hold a conversation, really listening
to another in what they have to say rather than what you have to say. Listening
is also a skill that can benefit in a learning environment, what questions you

1.2 Communication In The Modern World - More Essential Than Ever
Technology has a considerable impact on communications. Latest words and express
ions are conceived to match the most recent technological breakthroughs. The fol
lowing is a vital part of communication skills. As language is constantly changi
ng, one should be capable of staying abreast of the change. This means, a person
must possess sufficient knowledge to persist in improving his communication. No
w, we have observed the changes enforced by technology on language. Long ago, th
ere were days when spiders spun webs and fishing nets were cast to catch fish. A
lso, there were times when surfing truly had to do with boards as well as the se
a. The significance of communication abilities revolves around those skills, whi
ch will enable man advance with his speech. Culture also has a tremendous influe
nce on communication. At one time, varied cultures have been equal to using whic
hever word they wished to express something. In spite of this, due to the recogn
ition that a few words do insult other cultures, our language has been changed.
The significance of communication abilities is that these abilities facilitate t
he social networking of people. Possessing communication skills is imperative si
nce man is a social animal. Every one of us requires somebody to spend time with
so as to lead a complete life. Besides, other factors are also there, which aid
in the constant change in communication. Moreover, a point to be noted is that
these other factors too, add to the significance of communication skills. Now, t
he greatest significance of communication abilities is that it constitutes the c
hannel by means of which our civilization keeps on growing. The act of transmitt
ing knowledge from one generation to another is communication. Now, it is only b
y means of communication that we get by making discoveries. Still another signif
icance of communication abilities can be found in expression. What man has gone
through in life requires to be conveyed. People require some means to convey the
ir feelings so that others too can share what they have experienced. Then again,
people require communication skills to facilitate effective transmission of mes
sage. Communication skills are what differentiate between a squiggle and a work
of art. There are quite a few people, who may argue with this particular signifi
cance of communication abilities, and state that really art is not necessary for
survival. Nevertheless, have you, at any time, been aware that even though we t
oil to live, it is because of art that we live? The significance of communicatio
n abilities is that these abilities permit us to straighten up the disarray of h
uman interface. In the absence of communication abilities, people would not be a
ble to comprehend the requirements of one another and mutual development would n
ot be possible. Serving one another is exactly why we have moved forward all the
se years, and today, it is precisely the reason for our existence. It is by mean
s of harmony and cohesion that man has attained this eminence, which has been br
ought about by communication. The daily incidence of violence due to misinterpre
tations demonstrates to us simply what would take place if communication skills
ceased to exist. Communication skills are significant due to the fact that we re
quire being capable of connecting with the world in which we live. We ought to b
e capable of articulating our feelings.
1.3 Communication For Business
Whenever we face the task of writing a report, preparing a proposal, completing
a staff study, or composing a business letter, we go through the same series of
logical steps. First we recognize the problem and/or the purpose with which the
message must deal. Then we plan the content of the communication to achieve our
goal. Next we organize our ideas so that they will be presented in an order that
is logical and psychologically effective. Later we have to write the first draf
t, which must be followed by careful editing. It is imperative to make sure that
what we have written is stated clearly, completely, correctly, and concisely. W
riting the final draft from the edited version then becomes almost a simple form
ality.
In sum, the planning step pays dividends to both the writer and the reader. A wo
rking outline gives the writer an agenda to follow in creating a clear, organize
d document. That outline, as translated into headings and paragraph beginnings,
serves the reader as a road map for following the writerâ s thoughts. The end resul
t of such orderly sending and receiving is successful communication for business
.
When we communicate, we attempt to transmit ideas. We select words, order them i
nto sentences and connect the sentences to build paragraphs. The way business pe
ople handle those three elements largely determines how effective they are in ma
king themselves understandable to others. Creating and maintaining high standard
s for written communication in the workplace is hard work on the part of the man
ager. But the effort is well repaid as subordinates begin to practice the same s
tandards set by the manager. The alternative -simply letting poor writing go for
ward- backfires eventually on the bottom line, as clients, stockholders, and the
public lose faith in a company that canâ t communicate accurately and clearly. Eff
ective written communications succeed in both rational and emotional ways. Skill
ed business writers convey and arouse feelings as well as communicate facts and
ideas.
Every company, big or small, communicates to dozens of different publics. These
publics are either internal or external to the firm: employees, suppliers, deale
rs, distributors, manufacturers, customers, vendors, prospective purchasers, gov
ernment agencies, community groups, educational institutions, and so on. Of the
many types of written or printed communication forms, such as newspaper and maga
zine advertisements, direct mail pieces, telegrams, reports, and letters, it is
certainly letters are used most frequently.
Our modern world of computer and electronic communication, like the Internet and
the use of e-mails, has made a striking difference in our use of business lette
rs, as information now can be send quicker and at less cost than in the past. Bu
t although the transmission of the business letter is changing, the essential ac
t of sending a message from one person to another remains the same. Since one pe
rson is still communicating with another, it is important to be aware of and pra
ctice the basic principles of successful communication for business
1.4 The World of Business Communication
Every businessâ s aim is to gain profits. Whatever be the type of business you are
in; the bottom line is that you must earn something from it. There is no busines
sman in this world who wants to lose money everyday, if they do, their business
will definitely go down and will be closed due to its non-sustainability.
1.4.1 What is the necessary formula for being successful in business?
There is no concrete or uniform formula that has been used by every businessman,
but all there is the determination to succeed and accept rejections as well as
frustrations. There have been lots of books that talk about how to be successful
but ultimately it all boils down to you. The amount of effort you want to put i
n and your ability to accept failures when they set in will play a role in your
success or failure.
Every person whether a business man or an employee, communicates everyday to som
eone else. But when it comes to business there is another set of standards that
should be taken into consideration in order to achieve the goal of communicating
effectively and receiving the response that should be wanted.
