Newborn to Adult Sizes Included

Measurements: These are average measurements. If possible, measure the head circumference of the intended wearer first
for a more custom fit. If you know that the individual has a larger than average head, it would probably be best to make the
next size up. It is okay for the circumference of the hat to be slightly less than the measurements listed below, as it will have
considerable stretch. (The amount of stretch depends on how tightly/loosely the hat is crocheted, as well as the kind of yarn
used. For example, cotton yarns do not stretch as much as others, so hats made with cotton yarn should be made as close to
size as possible).
Premie/Newborn: (up to about 3 weeks): 13 inch circumference, 5.5 inch height.
0-3 Months: 14 - 15 inch (with stretch) circumference, up to 6 inch height.
3-6 Months: 15 17 inch (with stretch) circumference, up to 6 6.5 inch height.
6-12 Months: 16 19 inch (with stretch) circumference, up to 6.5 7 inch height.
1-2 Years: 18 20 inch (with stretch) circumference, up to 7 7.5 inch height.
3-10 Years: 19 20.5 inch (with stretch) circumference, up to 8 8.5 inch height
Teen/Adult: 20.5 22 inch (with stretch) circumference, up to 9 10 inch height

Materials:
G (6 / 4.00mm), H (8 / 5.00mm) and I (9 / 5.5mm) crochet hooks
Yarn needle
Measuring tape (to measure length before finishing)
4 ww (medium) yarn (I use Red Heart Soft Touch and Bernat Satin).

Gauge / Tension: Complete the first 2 rounds in the newborn 12 months size. This should measure 2 inches / 5 cm in
diameter. You may need to use either an H (5mm) or an I (5.5mm) hook it all depends on the brand of yarn you choose to
use, as some can be slightly thicker than others, even though they are listed as the same size. I tend to use an I hook unless I
am using a stiffer yarn or cotton yarn.

Abbreviations:
Magic circle: refer to this you-tube video (or any other video you can find): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHYVutk2iYY
slst: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
scinc: single crochet increase
sctog / scdec: single crochet together / single crochet decrease
hdc: half double crochet
hdctog / hdcdec: half double crochet together / half double crochet decrease
dc: double crochet

Notes: The ch1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch in this pattern.
There are 2 different ways to make this hat. If you do not want to complete it as it is written below (a ch1 and slst to join
method, which creates a slightly visible seam at the back of the hat) then instead of joining after each round you can just carry
on with the pattern. You will need a stitch marker (or a piece of yarn or bobby pin) to mark the first stitch of each round so
you don't lose your place. If you choose to do this, ignore the part of each round where you slst to join, and don't ch1 at the
start of any round EXCEPT the first round of the pattern. There won't be any seam at all this way. When you have reached
the appropriate length, undo the last 4 hdc stitches and replace them with: sc, sc, slst, slst. Then you can begin the earflaps (or
continue on with the finishing round for a beanie you will need ch1 to start and slst to join for this final round).

PATTERN: (H or I hook - check your gauge first)

FINISHING THE HAT:

For all hat sizes - continuing on from where you last slst into the first hdc of the previous round:
*ch1, hdc in each stitch around and slst to join* repeat *-* until the hat is either:
1 - about 1/4 inch SHORTER than the given measurements above for a beanie. Ch1, sc in each stitch around, and slst to join.
You can use either the same colour yarn or a contrast/accent colour. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
OR
2 between 1/4 and 1/2 inch shorter than the given measurements above for an earflap beanie. If you are going to have a
contrasting colour for the trim, stop when it is about 1/2 an inch shorter than the desired length. If you are going to complete
the trim in the same colour, stop when you are 1/4 inch short of the measurements listed above. Dont fasten off yet skip to
instructions for earflaps below.

EARFLAPS:
**The earflaps are done in hdc rounds. If you would like shorter earflaps you can substitute sc for the hdc. I personally
prefer the newborn 3 month sizes with shorter earflaps, so I substitute sc for these ones, but it is completely up to you. **
The main part of the pattern is written for newborn size. In the brackets in the instructions for each round, you will find a
colour-coded number of hdc required for the other sizes).

For example, if you choose to make a size 3-10 years hat and the pattern reads:
ch1, hdc in next 7 stitches. Ch1, turn. (8, 8, 10, 10, 12, 12),
you will need to hdc in the next 12 stitches, as the 7 stitches listed at the beginning are for the newborn size.
Newborn, 0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, 12-24 Months, 3-10 Years, Teen-Adult.
EARFLAP #1
Continuing on from where you last slst into the first hdc of the previous round:
Rnd1: ch1, hdc in the next 7 (8, 8, 10, 10, 12, 12) stitches. Ch1, turn. (7, 8, 8, 10, 10, 12, 12)
Rnd2: hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn. (7, 8, 8, 10, 10, 12, 12)
Rnd3: hdcdec, hdc in the next 3 (4, 4, 6, 6, 8, 8) stitches, hdcdec, ch1, turn. (5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 10, 10)
Rnd4: hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn. (5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 10, 10)
Rnd5: hdcdec, hdc in the next 1 (2, 2, 4, 4, 6, 6) stitches, hdcdec, ch1, turn. (3, 4, 4, 6, 6, 8, 8)
Rnd6: hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn. (3, 4, 4, 6, 6, 8, 8)
** Newborn size - skip to finishing round A), 0-3 Months, 3-6 Months skip to finishing round B)**
Rnd7: hdcdec, hdc in the next 2 (2, 4, 4) stitches, hdcdec, ch1, turn. (4, 4, 6, 6)
Rnd8: hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn. (4, 4, 6, 6)
** 6-12 Months, 12-24 Months skip to finishing round B)**
Rnd9: hdcdec, hdc in the next 2 (2) stitches, hdcdec, ch1, turn. (4, 4)
Rnd10: hdc in each stitch across, ch1, turn. (4, 4)
** 3-10 Years, Teen-Adult skip to finishing round B)**

Earflap #1 Finishing Round:

A) hdc in the fist st, ch1, skip a stitch, hdc in the last stitch. Fasten off. (Newborn size: 1hdc, 1ch space, 1hdc)
B) hdc dec the first 2 stitches together. Ch1, hdc dec the last 2 stitches together. Fasten off. (All other sizes: 1hdc, 1ch
space, 1hdc)

EARFLAP #2
Look closely at your hat - the side of the earflap that as the slightly visible seam will be the BACK of the hat. Beginning from
the base of earflap #1 with the back of the hat facing you, count back (to the left) 13 (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18) stitches. Mark
this spot, it will be where the last stitch of the first row of the earflap goes. Then count a further 7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13)
stitches & attach your yarn in this stitch. Turn the hat around, and begin the second earflap. If you want, you can make the
space between the earflaps a little larger in the front (this will be necessary if you needed to make more increases to create a
larger hat). There should be a slightly larger space between the earflaps at the front, particularly in the larger sizes. Repeat the
instructions for earflap #1 BUT complete the finishing round for earflap #2 (below).

Earflap #2 Finishing Round:

A) hdc in the fist st, ch1, skip a stitch, hdc in the last stitch. DO NOT FASTEN OFF!! (Newborn size: 1hdc, 1ch space,
1hdc)
B) hdc dec the first 2 stitches together. Ch1, hdcdec the last 2 stitches together. DONT FASTEN OFF!! (All other sizes:
1hdc, 1ch space, 1hdc)

Adding the Trim:

Rnd1: For all styles: ch1, sc around the hat and earflap, slst to join. Fasten off. If you do not want to add a contrasting trim,
the hat is now complete. To add a contrasting trim, continue with the next step.
Rnd2: If you are adding a contrasting/accenting trim: attach the accent yarn, ch1 and sc around the earflap. If you like,
you can sctog the last stitch of the earflap and first stitch along the brim at all 4 locations. Slst to join, fasten off and weave in
all loose ends.

Adding the Ties: The size of your hat or your preferences will determine the length & thickness of the ties. Decide how
long you would like the ties to be, and add about 1.5 inches to this as the knot & twist/braiding shortens the overall length.
For example, if I want the ties to be 10 inches, I will measure out 20 inches and then add another 1.5 inches. (You double the
length you want because you will be folding the yarn in half before braiding/twisting it).
For Braids:
I usually cut between 24 and 36 strands, depending on the size of the hat and how thick I want the ties. Cut as many strands
as it takes until you think it feels thick enough. Although you will be separating these strands in half, you will also be folding
them in half later, so each braid will be the same thickness as the original number of strands you cut. Divide these in half to
make an equal set of ties. Fold the strands in half around your finger, and pull this loop a few inches through the chain
1 space at the bottom of the earflap. (*Make sure you insert the middle loop through the space on the outside of the
hat, so that the loop shows up on the inside part of the earflap*). Put your index finger & thumb through the loop,
grab the strands & pull them through the loop. Tighten slowly & evenly. Then, separate the strands into 3 groups (3
groups of different colours, the same colour, or multiple colours) and braid the strands as far down as you can. Make a knot
in the bottom, making sure you leave enough yarn left out for fringe. Repeat these steps on the other earflap. When
you make the knot, do not tighten until you line the ties up, so you can see if you need to adjust the length so they
match. Then trim the ends so they are even.

For Twists:
I usually cut about 30 strands, and then divide them in half to make a set of ties with 15 in each. You can use 1 colour, 2
colours, or a large variety of colours. Divide the strands in two. Line up the ends and smooth them out, which will make the
other end of the set a little uneven, but this is okay because you will trim them at the end. Follow the first set of BOLD
instructions in the braids section above to continue. Once attached, separate the strands into 2 groups. Holding the hat
between your knees, grab the first set and twist/turn them counter clockwise (to the left) until it makes a moderately tight (but
not bunching up) rope. Hold this between your chin & chest, or have someone hold it for you. Repeat the same process with
the other set of strands. Then, holding the ends of each set, begin to twist them together clockwise (to the right). You will
have to pass them back & forth between your hands, similar to braiding it will not work properly if you simply hold them
together and twist. When the twist reaches near the end of the strands, tie a knot in the bottom, making sure you leave enough
yarn left out for fringe. Follow the second set of BOLD instructions in the braids section above to complete.

Puppy Ears H hook *Please note that the final 2 rounds of the ears are done in sc not hdc*. The ears will start out
similar to how the hat starts out, but they close up at the bottom. The small and medium sized ears start out the same, and
then branch out to accommodate different sizes. Simply begin the ear and then follow the instructions for the size you want.

Rnd18: Finishing round you can fasten off now and leave a long, long tail OR complete a round of sc all the way around the
bow first. I always place 2sc in the corners to keep them from curling / rounding too much. When done, make sure you leave
a very long tail of yarn. Carefully weave the yarn to the center of the bow and wrap it as loosely or as tightly as you like
around the center, creating the bump in the middle. If you like, this can be done with a different coloured piece of yarn.
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Assembly: Start by folding your hat in half so that the earflaps are touching. Find the side of the hat that is the front. Using
a colorful piece of yarn, weave it loosely through the stitches up from the brim to the crown of the hat. Unfold your hat, and
you now have a visible center seem to use as a guide when placing & sewing on the eye patch/patches, buttons and nose. I
would recommend placing the nose first and then placing the eye patch/patches. Gently pull the strand out of the way when
sewing on the nose and remove it completely when you are finished. Weave in all loose ends.
With the eyes and nose on, lay the hat flat in front of you and, using a colorful piece of yarn, weave it loosely through the
stitches about halfway up from the earflap, over the crown of the hat, and down the other side. This will give you a visible

guideline for sewing on your ears. (Make sure you dont sew through this strand of yarn as it can make it very difficult to
remove it afterwards!) Decide how high up you would like the ears. Once they are sewn on, tie/fasten off and weave in all
loose ends.
