Learning: What Africans can Teach Americans

As American culture becomes more diverse so will the ways in which we transmit knowledge.
Therefore, it is more important than ever that we as Americans begin to enrich our teaching and
learning methods from perspectives different than our own. Traditionally, Americans teach and learn
from a Western perspective. A Western perspective can be recognized by identifiable characteristics
such as placing higher value on independence, a separation of secular and sacred knowledge, and that
learning is assessed through testing and certification (Merriam, 2007). In contrast, non-Western
learning is a holistic and spiritual activity, as opposed to a more cognitive perception, as that of
Western learning. Non-Western learning places more importance on interdependence, which attaches
communal concerns with learning (Merriam, Caffarella, & Baumgartner, 2007).
American culture is continuously evolving in multi-cultural community it has become
imperative that we raise our awareness beyond our borders and begin to learn from the world around
us. After all, not all peoples of the world learn or teach alike, and this reinforces the need to explore
non-Western methods and use them to enhance out our own. For the purpose of this a paper we will
highlight one non-Western country, Africa. Africa is exemplary of the non-Western style of learning.
African education is holistic; it seeks to produce a complete individual and lifelong learner who is a
productive contributor to both their immediate family and community (Omolewa, 2007). As Merriam
(2007) argues that the purpose for examining other systems is not to replace the Western tradition, but
to expand our understanding of learning and knowing so that our practice as educators can be more
inclusive and effective (p. 14). The problem lies in the limitedness of American learning styles, which
in the past have served their purpose but are now relatively archaic and must evolve. These new
methodologies must be incorporated in order serve in a more diverse cultural and worldly population.
Moreover, the adoption of these practices will serve to enrich the learning experience and enhance
quality of our education and responsibility as citizens of a global community.
