Five
Minster
Couples
Enjoy
Alaskan
Cruise
&
Land Tour
In late August and early September, five Minster couples traveled to Alaska. They enjoyed a
seven-day land tour and seven-day cruise. They visited many beautiful sites, such as
Fairbanks, Denali National Park, Mount McKinley, and Anchorage. They boarded their cruise
ship in Whittier and visited the ports of Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan, and toured Hubbard
Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Mendenhall Glacier, and Nugget Creek Falls. They enjoyed
whale watching, zip lining, a Nenana River Raft Tour, a lumberjack show, and panning for gold.
The couples had a memorable trip and Ken Meyer remembered to take along his Penny Saver
so he could enter our Take Us Along contest. His prize will be mailed out to him.

Most of Santas
reindeer have malesounding names,
such as Blitzen,
Comet, and Cupid.
However, all male
reindeers shed their
antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer
pulling Santas sleigh
are likely not male,
but female or castrati.

Last-Minute Party Planning Tips

Before extending invitations to guests, hosts
know that throwing a party for friends, family
or professional colleagues is a lot of work. But
sometimes party planning slides down hosts
priority lists, leaving them to scramble to plan
a fun and memorable event at the last minute.
Planning an elaborate affair at the last minute
can test any hosts mettle, but even more casual
affairs can prove difficult to plan at the last
minute. While its ideal to party plan well in
advance of the festivities, the following tips
can help hosts who have left everything until
the last minute.
Address only those areas where guests will
spend time. Hosts may prefer to clean their entire homes before guests arrive, but thats likely
not possible when throwing a last-minute gettogether. In lieu of cleaning your entire home,
clean only those rooms where guests will be
congregating during the party. Close the doors
to any rooms you did not have time to clean before guests arrive. If you plan to entertain outdoors, direct the bulk of your attention to the
kitchen, the backyard and the restrooms.
Be specific when delegating tasks. Lastminute party planning requires lots of cooperation. Assign specific tasks to each person who
is helping you clean your home and plan the
party. Do not be vague when instructing your
helpers, as this might create confusion and re-

sult in tasks not being completed.

Encourage guests to contribute to the
party. When hosting friends and family at
home, encourage them to contribute something
to the party, whether its food, beverages, entertainment or another element you might not have
time to plan. Shopping for groceries and preparing food can take a substantial amount of time,
leaving you with little time to prepare your
home for visitors. Asking guests to bring something gives you more time to clean your home
and plan a memorable party.
Work with some professionals. If your
party is truly last-minute or you simply dont
have the time to prepare, hire a professional
cleaning service and a professional party planner. Such professionals can handle the bulk of
your hosting tasks and ensure that your home
is ready for guests and that the party will go
off without a hitch.
Focus on fun. While hosts typically want
to impress their guests with a pristine home and
elaborate meal, guests really just want to have a
fun time and enjoy the time they have to spend
with fellow partygoers, including the hosts.
Rather than putting pressure on yourself to
throw a lavish affair, direct your efforts toward
ensuring everyone has fun and makes some
good memories.

Bet You Didnt Know These Christmas Facts . . .

The word Christmas is Old English, a contraction of Christ's Mass.

The first president to decorate the white house Christmas tree in the United States was
Franklin Pierce.
Germany made the first artificial Christmas trees. They were made of goose feathers
and dyed green.
Electric lights for trees were first used in 1895.
The first Christmas cards were vintage and invented in 1843, the Victorian Era.
"It's a Wonderful Life" appears on TV more often than any other holiday movie.
Rudolph" was actually created by Montgomery Ward in the late 1930's for a holiday
promotion. The rest is history.

Family Traditions Keep Christmas Spirit Alive

For most of us, the holidays are comprised
of Christmas holiday celebrations and traditions.
Many family traditions are handed down from
generation to generation.
Newer traditions are adopted when families
merge. This makes for some very interesting
holidays indeed! Some traditions are simple to
carry out. However, others require quite a bit of
effort.
Decorations
Without a doubt, one of the most important
holiday customs in the United States is the family Christmas tree. Year after year, trees are
adorned with treasured ornaments and are carefully stored once the season is over. The ornaments alone often bring back happy childhood
memories and are handed down once that child
grows up.
Most houses are all decked out with garland,
mistletoe, and wreaths. Some families go all out
and put up Christmas lights outdoors. What a
treat! It's these decorations that families come to
love and make for a very festive atmosphere.
Baking
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, homes
are usually filled with mouth-watering aromas
from baking holiday goodies. From cakes, candies to cookies, many of these treats are packaged in baskets or cookie tins for holiday gifts.
Since we always bake weeks before the holidays, we always store many of these goodies in
the freezer so they don't go stale. When Christmas nears, we have an assembly line to put together our treat packages and add a Christmas
card and bow on top.
christmas Parties
Who doesn't look forward to a party? Parties
are the usual Christmas tradition, whether it's
with work associates or family members. It's a
time for family and friends to get together, exchange gifts, and celebrate the holiday season.
Often, these parties are for decorating the tree
and decking the halls, while making plans for

Christmas Day. Don't forget to help with the

food preparations to ease some pressure off of
the host.
stockings
I t doesn't matter if there is a fireplace in the
house or not. Every child hangs a Christmas
stocking out for Santa and his elves to fill up
with goodies and candy canes. The bigger the
stocking the better. This is usually the first thing
checked on Christmas morning when the children wake up, full of anticipation.
gifts
Gift-giving is one of the most classic Christmas traditions ever and the merchants know it.
This is the most profitable season forstores and
you'll find decorations and gifts in these stores
as early as August. Don't start shopping too early
or you'll probably end up spending too much.
christmas carDs
This custom is becoming less popular,
however, companies still find it good for
business. With the cost of cards and postage,
lists are becoming very limited. Since the
holidays are so busy, many people don't take
the time anymore to send out Christmas cards.
It's a real treat to receive a Christmas card.
So if you're considering stopping the tradition
altogether, just send them to very close friends
and family and keep the custom alive.
cookies & milk for santa
Remember this? Santa must be very full by
the time he's done delivering Christmas gifts.
Children around the world leave cookies and
milk for Santa, hoping they'll wake up to find
crumbs and an empty glass. On farms, they often
leave hay out for Santa's reindeer.
Whatever holiday traditions your family enjoys, they make the holiday joyful and provide
priceless memories exclusive only to you.
Enjoy!
