HH continues to strengthen existing projects and implement

new ones, thereby realizing its overall goal of building the
capacity of individuals, families, and the village.
HH’s approach to community development includes well-
defined projects, clear methods of implementation, and
measurable outcomes. For the past three years, HH has been
working in Prasat Char Village and perfecting this approach. In
time, this approach may be replicated in neighboring villages.

Health and Hygiene Initiative
HH identified major preventable diagnosis in children,
major treatable diagnosis in children, and minor treatable
and preventable diagnosis in children.

Past work during July 2007 – February 2008:

• Organizational Structure and Policies
o created a Staff Handbook, Job Descriptions, and
Job Checklists
o initiated weekly Staff Meetings to increase staff
communication, discuss expectations, and offer
teacher training
o held first annual Staff Party with families
• Participatory Analysis of Prasat Char Village
o created a Community Map identifying 190 homes,
water sources, and areas of interest and concern
o held formal meetings with health care workers,
village and commune leaders, and education
workers
o held meetings with villagers
o evaluated past projects through
satisfaction surveys
• HH Concert in Lberk Village
o held an informational concert about
HH
o explained HH’s approach & upcoming
projects in Lberk
• The Eye Project
o coordinated and
funded eye
treatment, medication and
surgery for 27 villagers
(One woman regained her
sight after 20 years)
• Partnerships
o initiated partnerships with Angkor Hospital for Children, Australian
Youth Ambassadors for Development, Interweave, and Mango Travel
• Community Education Center
o created additional teaching materials, attained new books and puzzles,
expanded garden, and expanded kitchen

Recent work:
• The Breakfast Program
o In order to address students’ protein
malnutrition, we use the World Food
Program’s Breakfast Menu. Every child eats:
• 100g of Rice
• 20g of canned Fish
• 10g of Vegetable Oil
• 3g of Salt
• 25g of green leafy Vegetables
o It costs us 16¢ to feed a child

o Every student earned a Bowl and Spoon by

completing a Healthy Nutrition Worksheet.
• Student Registration
o 359 students completed registration forms, received
a Student ID card, and earned coloring materials
• Student Tracking System
o Daily attendance is taken at every class using
Student ID numbers
• Hand-washing Stations
o 3 hand-washing
stations were built
at the Iqbal School
o All teachers &
students now must
wash hands before
entering the school.
The disinfectant
kills germs that cause diarrhea, common
colds, and impetigo (the three major treatable
health problems at the school)
• The Bike Project in Lberk Village
o A representative
from each of the 245
homes in Lberk spent
5 days building a
road. Then they
came to Siem Reap to
earn a bicycle
o A 50-meter road
was completed and
90 homes are accessible by road
• Doctor Day
o On March 27th, 250 students were evaluated by doctors from the
Angkor Hospital for Children’s Home Care Program
o Children received worm tablets, Vitamin A, and Iron supplements
o Major health problems were identified and treatment plans were
instituted

Current work:
• Holistic Youth Curriculum
o Supplementing Basic English and Khmer, students will learn Health
and Hygiene, Life Skills, Art, Social Studies, and Math. A routine
weekly schedule looks like:

o The Health and Hygiene Education Curriculum will consist of 12
monthly themes and a weekly Health and Hygiene activity.
 o At the end of each month, an Awareness Concert will highlight student
activities and learning and increase the knowledge of the whole
community.

• Weekly Teacher Training workshops
o Before lessons can be taught at the school, the teachers must
understand the importance of every topic. Therefore, Teacher Training
is the first step. Teachers learn about the Topic and how to lead
activities for each topic.
