THE MOORESTOWN SUN DEC. 1622, 2015

in our opinion

Happy holidays!

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

A thank you to everyone who helped to brighten the season for those in need
s the holiday season has a little more than a week remaining, we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has
stepped up to help those in need. This
time of year usually brings out the
best in people. Judging from the number of announcements we received
from our readers regarding donation
drives, it looks like this year was no exception.
In the past, specific tragedies such
as Hurricane Sandy a few years ago
created an immediate need in many
communities. But even though this
area was lucky enough to avoid such a
circumstance this year, there is still a
big need.

Stepping up
Thank you to everyone who lent a helping
hand to those in need this holiday season.
But giving shouldnt stop just because the
holidays are over. Tell us about your donation drive throughout the year,
and well share it with the rest of the
community.

Food banks are still low on food and

supplies. The same can be said for
those groups that help with clothing,
and even toys for children.
Over the past few weeks, we have
had the pleasure of publishing stories
about efforts to lend a hand. Like always, there were the usual Toys for Tot
drives and more. We dont keep a formal count of the number of holiday

fundraising event stories we publish

from year to year, but it certainly
seemed that, in 2015, there were many.
So, we thank those individuals and
groups who organized these efforts.
And, on behalf of them, we also thank
everyone who picked up an extra can
of non-perishable food, an additional
bag of dog food, one more toy and
more. To all of those who reached a little deeper into their wallets this year to
help out, your generosity truly made a
difference.
As you wrap up your holiday shopping for this year, try to lend one final
helping hand to those in need.
We wish everyone a happy holiday
season!

James H. Bernhardt
Nov. 27, 2015
James H. Bernhardt died peacefully at
home on Friday, Nov. 27 after living with
ALS since 2010.
Jim was born on June 3, 1944, and grew
up in Moorestown. He graduated from
Moorestown High School in 1962, one of
the last classes held in the old high school.
He graduated from Lafayette College in
1966 and received his MBA in 1968 from the
Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Jim and his family moved to
Greer in 1975 where he joined Texize as
senior brand manager for Spray n Wash.
He eventually became vice president of
marketing for the Household Cleaning
Products division of DowBrands. In the
1990s, he moved with DowBrands to Toronto, Ontario, where he served as president of
DowBrands Canada and then to Indianapolis, Ind., as chief marketing officer for
DowBrands. Jim concluded his business
career as senior vice president for Scotts
Miracle-Gro and as chief marketing officer
for Aearo Technologies.
Jim surrendered his life to Jesus Christ

at the age of 47 and began a beautiful journey toward his Lord and savior. He strove
to honor and serve God and never allowed
ALS to stop him from living each day to the
fullest. His unwavering faith and positive
outlook throughout his illness were an inspiration to many. Jim maintained his
quick wit and sense of humor throughout
and was a loving husband, father and
grandfather and a faithful friend. He was
an active member and deacon at Taylors
First Baptist Church. Jim served the elderly in his church family, visiting those in
nursing homes, even up till the week he
passed away. Before his illness, Jim was an
avid golfer with the Silverblades at Thornblade. In addition to golf, he enjoyed spending time with family, attending Bible studies, traveling, walking on the beach at Wild
Dunes, dining out and joking with friends,
working in the yard and attending Clemson sporting events.
Jim was predeceased by his mother and
father, Jean D. Bernhardt and Howard E.
Bernhardt both of Moorestown and his
brother, Thomas Bernhardt of Mt. Laurel.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Lindsey Britton Bernhardt, his sister Susan Cu-

Providers Fair as a means of developing the social and professional network available to individuals with special needs, their
families and their caregivers. In
2015, its inaugural year, the Special Needs Providers Fair delivered information on services
from health care and behavioral
service to music therapy and
sports activities to the hundreds
of individuals attending. The response was overwhelming with 48
individual providers coming
from throughout the South Jersey area to educate parents and

care givers about services available.

Last year hundreds of attendees came out to see what these
amazing providers had to offer.
From animal therapy providers
to law firms with special needs
specialties, 48 different providers
brought information and networking to families and caregivers. Additionally, the state was
present with representatives
from its many departments that
offer services to individuals with
special needs. From state-run
services to health-care providers,
behavioral health providers,
music therapy, sports opportunities, specialized education services and more this providers fair
was the first of its kind in this
area and received rave reviews
from attendees and providers
alike. The Department of Parks
and Recreation is pleased to be
able to offer local families assistance through information shar-

ing and networking. Information

about the departments many special needs programs and opportunities will be available as well.

orating with others. After the assembly, students learned and interacted with code in their computer class.
Computers are everywhere
and their usage will only continue to grow STEM is very important in our schools. There are
a lot of activities for all levels. We
wanted to start at the elementary
level, laying the foundation.
Those who are inspired at an
early age will continue to do it,
computer teacher Mark Ambrosino said.

LONG & FOSTER

The Hour of Code is a global

event during Computer Science
Week, Dec. 7 to 11, where millions
of children from around the
world complete coding activities
to engage students and promote
computer science in schools. The
Hour of Code shows children that
coding isnt a scary experience
and anyone can do it.
We want students to get the
computer to do what they want it
to do, not what others have done
for them. Many people are afraid
of computers, but they are just
tools. If you learn how they work
and control them, you can really
push your imagination, Ambrosino said.
MTPS decided to host Hour of
Code in its elementary schools

last year because STEM is held

very highly in the district.
During the assembly, parents
Eric Mauger and Dr. Joanne
Broder Sumerson talked about
the importance of computer science in career fields and life, as
well as stepping away from the
computer or unplugging.
For the week, students learned
about plugged and unplugged activities. Students used Code.org to
manipulate well-known characters from Minecraft and Star
Wars using codes to complete different tasks.
(Coding) is great. I like learning about code Its good to
know because you use it a lot in
school and in life, third grader
Tyler Mark said.
Unplugged activities were in
the students challenge classes
where students had to collaborate
and solve puzzles and games
without a computer. Students
used pencil and paper as well as
communicated with each other to
accomplish those tasks.
It is important to unplug because you need your sleep and to
get stronger, third grader Anna
LeGrazie said.
It is important to learn about
computers and also when to walk
away. (Students) need to learn to
collaborate and talk, not lose that
valuable skill, Ambrosino said.
Students will continue to learn
and use coding throughout December.
The biggest thing Ambrosino
hopes students take away from
learning coding and other computer and technology skills is
confidence. He feels being confidence is very rewarding.
I hope when they look at a
challenge, theyll see it as not difficult, but a journey to grow and
be stronger. It is an awesome feeling. When they are struggling
and then finally figure out how to
do it, they get excited and feel
good about it. I want them to see
that they can do this, Ambrosino
said.

DEC. 1622, 2015 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 19

Turnout shows community love of MCH

TURNOUT
Continued from page 4
However, this year was extra
special, as the MCH had a fire in
November that damaged the attic
and affected other parts of the
building, causing it to be temporarily closed. It wasnt long
after, the MCH received an overwhelming amount of support and
was able to get a lot of its facilities running again.
During the MCH Tree Lighting
Celebration, Board President
George Schulmann and MCH Executive Director Brad Kenney
thanked those who helped during
and after the fire, and residents
for helping and being supportive
of the towns historic building.
Id like to thank everyone for
being here in celebration of the
holiday season, the Community
House and the saving of the Community House from the fire,
Kenney said.
This is what this building here
is for, serving the community. And
without you, this building wouldnt be here, Schulmann said.
The Sun came to the MCH Tree
Lighting Celebration to ask residents their thoughts on the tradition as well as their own holiday

traditions.
All around, residents really
loved the MCH Tree Lighting Celebration. They felt its a great and
wonderful tradition that brings
the community together and gets
them in the holiday spirit.
It starts the season. With the
Moorestown Holiday Parade on
Saturday and the tree lighting, it
gets the kids really in the spirit,
Michelle Sullivan said.
Its a wonderful event that really brings the community together, Ann Chardo said.
Residents were happy the MCH
held the lighting despite the fire.
The amount of support by people
showed the dedication and endurance of the MCH and the community.
It shows the perseverance of
the town and the support the
MCH has and the town has in general, Sullivan said.
I think the turnout shows how
appreciative people are that it didnt burn down, Missy Roth said.
Newlyweds Ben and Leah
Smith said it was their first time
attending the tree lighting.
Theyve always done the annual
Moorestown Lions Club Holiday
Parade, held on Dec. 5 this year,
and learned about the tree lighting, so they decided to come and
check it out. Leah grew up in a

town where they dont have any

such holiday events, so for her,
the Moorestown holiday events
are special and exciting.
I grew up in a town where we
didnt do anything, and when I
started dating him (Ben), I started
doing the parade. I think I got
more excited for it than he did,
Leah said.
The Smiths holiday traditions
include the Moorestown Holiday
Parade, Philadelphias Macys
Charles Dickens and light show,
and, now, the MCH Tree Lighting
Celebration.
Many residents have different
traditions, but all spoke about
spending time with family and
celebrating together.
(Its about) celebrating with
family, eating, drinking and being
merry, Faith Tarangelo said. I
love seeing all of the decorations
and kids faces on Christmas day
when they open their presents.
According to Schulmann, people have been asking how they
can help the MCH. He recommended visiting the Facebook
page or its restoration campaign
at www.ourcommunityhouse.com
and donating there.
I can promise you that this
building will come back stronger,
better and more beautiful than
ever, Schulmann said.

Sustainable
Moorestown Green Team accept-

ing the award.

To become Sustainable Jersey
certified at the silver-level,
Moorestown submitted documentation to show it had completed a
balance of the required sustainability actions, exceeding the
minimum of 350 action points by
achieving 405 approved action. In
addition to reaching a minimum
of 350 points, each community
had to create a green team and select at least three out of 11 priority action options. Moorestown
did six of the 11 priority actions
by completing actions for 1) energy tracking and management, 2)

inventory and upgrade all buildings, 3) fleet inventory, 4) sustainable land use pledge, 5) natural resource inventory, and 6) |prescription drug safety and disposal.
Becoming Sustainable Jersey
certified is a significant achievement, especially at the silverlevel, said Randall Solomon, codirector of Sustainable Jersey.
The 191 Sustainable Jersey certified towns demonstrate leadership and are a testament to how
much we can accomplish toward
the long-term goal of a sustainable New Jersey.

Herman known for volunteerism

HERMAN
Continued from page 1
However, that didnt stop ITAVNJ
from keeping up its volunteering,
as members helped the Herman
family in their time of need as
well as still held the groups
monthly meeting on Dec. 9.
Irwin leaves behind a legacy of
life, love and volunteerism that
cant be stopped.
Irwin wasnt known as a talker,
as Trudi, Irwins wife, was known
for that. But he was known for his
love for animals, his ability to fix
anything, his crafting, sense of
humor and his volunteering.
He was fun, always had a joke
he was busy doing his woodworking and fixing all of the
things I break, Trudi said with a
laugh.
Irwin was a veteran of WWII.
At the age of 19, he was drafted
into the Army. He was with the
Army for three years, in the heat
of the battle in Germany and
France. When he came back, he
met Trudi on a blind date and
spent the then-grand sum of $20
on their first date. From the first
date, Trudi knew he was different

than the other men she had dated

before.
There was a feeling of great
comfort with him. He was so gentle, sweet and kind, Trudi said.
Irwin got his degree in engineering from Syracuse University. With his degree, he and Trudi
moved all over the east coast as he
worked in mechanical and aerospace engineering with companies such as Boeing and GE. They
finally settled in Moorestown,
where Irwin was working just before his retirement at 67.
Irwin and Trudi were all about
volunteerism from the start.
Trudi grew up in a household of
volunteers and kept up that tradition. The couple volunteered together with schools, theaters, animals, children and other organizations.
They started their own volunteer organization, ITAVNJ, in
2011 along with a group of
Moorestown neighbors. ITAVNJ,
part of the Village to Village Network, started with just $600 and a
dream to help those in need.
Since then, it has expanded and
held fundraisers that allowed it to
add adjacent areas to ITAVNJ,
such as Cinnaminson, Delran,
Hainesport, Maple Shade and Mt.

Laurel.
The groups mission is to help
elderly and disabled neighbors of
any age, and returning veterans,
remain safely and independently
in their own homes by providing
free support services such as
going out for groceries and running errands; visiting, calling or
reading to the visually impaired;
giving caretakers a break; and
driving clients to local doctors, libraries and stores.
What makes ITAVNJ unique is
volunteers and clients are
matched so a personal connection
and relationship can be created,
rather than having a different
person each time.
We match up a client with a
volunteer, who meet once a week
and eventually become friends,
Trudi said.
Volunteers do not provide services such as giving or dispensing
medication to clients, cleaning
the household or premises or giving personal care and bathing.
Due to Irwins passing, ITAVNJ
is in need of a president. Trudi
asks anyone who is interested in
holding the position of president
to please reach out to her.
ITAVNJ is also always in need
of volunteers. New volunteers are
invited to an hour-long training
session held each month with a
social worker from Princeton
House Behavioral Health in
Moorestown,
Jennifer
Giovainazzi, and her assistant, Leila
Finklea.
We dont want this work to not
continue. So we need to find people, Trudi said.
Anyone who cant volunteer,
but is interested in helping the
Hermans and ITAVNJ, tax deductible donations in honor of
Irwin can made out to It Takes a
Village NJ and sent to the organizations treasurer, Wini Gaskell,
208 Paul Drive, Moorestown.
For further information about
ITAVNJ, to refer a new client or to
volunteer, go to www.itavnj.org,
email ItTakesAVillageNJ@gmail.
com or call (856) 396-5783. You can
also check out the national organization, the Village to Village Network, at www.vtvnetwork.org.
