ThereareanumberofreportedlyhauntedlocationsinWashington,D.C.Thecity
isthecapitaloftheUnitedStates,andwasfounded(pursuanttoanActof
Congress)onJuly16,1790.TheCityofWashingtonwasoriginallyaseparate
municipalitywithintheTerritoryofColumbiauntilanactofCongressin1871
effectivelymergedGeorgeTown,theCityofWashington,andtheTerritoryof
ColumbiaintoasingleentitycalledtheDistrictofColumbia.Washington,D.C.,
hasbeenthesiteofmilitarybattles,deadlyduels,assassinations,untimelydeaths,
andassociatedtragedies.
Washington'shauntedhistoryissowellknownthatsomeofitshauntedlocations
werefeaturedina2006documentary,America'sHauntedHouses,ontheA&E
TheUnitedStatesCapitol,oneofmanyplacesin
cablenetwork.NovelistDanBrownmentionedthemprominentlyinhis2009
Washingtonsaidtobehaunted
novel,TheLostSymbol.NotablepurportedlyhauntedlocationsincludetheUnited
StatesCapitol,CapitolHill,theWhiteHouse,LafayetteSquare,andnearby
buildings,IndependenceAvenueSW,TheOctagonHouse,Chinatown,theNationalTheatre,HayAdamsHotel,WoodrowWilsonHouse,
OmniShorehamHotel,andmanyothers.
TheUnitedStatesCapitolisreputedlyhauntedbymanypastrepresentativesoftheUnitedStatesHouseofRepresentativesandgovernment
officials,officerswhoservedduringtheAmericanRevolutionaryWar,workerswhodiedduringitsconstructionanda"demonblackcat"that
issaidtomakeappearancesjustbeforenationaltragediesorchangesinPresidentialadministration.Averyhighnumberofapparitionsof
deceasedAmericanpresidentshavebeenreportedintheWhiteHouse,themostfamousofwhichisAbrahamLincoln,reportedevenbylater
presidentssuchasHarryS.Truman,andapparitionsofpresidentsThomasJefferson,AndrewJackson,andJohnTylerhaveallbeenwitnessed,
ashavethespiritsofmanyFirstLadies.
ThePresident'sPark,LafayetteParkandnearbybuildingsarereportedtobehometoghostssuchasPhilipBartonKeyIIandStephenDecatur
whodiedtherefollowingpistolduels.TheOctagonissupposedlyoneofthemosthauntedbuildingsinD.C.,withsightingsofitspast
occupantsandAfricanAmericanslaveswhoonceworkedthere.TheNationalTheatreissaidtobehauntedbytheghostofactorJohn
McCullough,whowasmurderedinthe1880sbyafellowthespian.HayAdamsHotelisclaimedtobehosttotheghostofMarian"Clover"
HooperAdams,thewifeofHenryBrooksAdams,thecelebrated19thcenturyAmericanjournalist,historianandnovelist,whowasthe
grandsonofJohnQuincyAdams,andtheWoodrowWilsonHouseisallegedlyhauntedbyformerpresidentWoodrowWilsonhimselfwho

TheUnitedStatesCapitolisconsideredoneofthemosthauntedbuildingsinWashington.[1][2]Thefirstapparitiontobeseentherewasinthe
1860sastheCapitolwasbeingcompleted.[3]SeveralspiritsaresaidtohaunttheCapitolduetotragediesassociatedwithitsconstruction.One
suchghostissaidtobethatofaworkerwhodiedafterafallduringtheconstructionoftherotunda,andwhonowisoccasionallyseenfloating
beneaththedomecarryingatrayofwoodworkingtools.[3]Anotherspiritisallegedlyastonemasonwhodied(crushedtodeathbeneathawall
whichcollapsed,ormurderedbyacoworker)andisseenintheOldSenatechambersorpassingthroughawallinthebasementbeneaththe

ManypoliticianswithstrongpersonalitiesandapowerfulattachmenttotheinstitutionofCongressarereputedstilltoroamthehallsof
Congresslongaftertheirdeaths.TheshadesofRepresentativeJosephCannon(RIll.andSpeakerfrom1903to1911)andRep.ChampClark
(DMo.andSpeakerfrom1911to1919)areclaimedtooccasionallyreturntothedarkchamberoftheHouseofRepresentativesaftermidnight
and,afteraloudrapfromagavel,resumethestrong,angrydebatestheyoncehadinlife.[2]MembersoftheUnitedStatesCapitolPolicehave
claimedtohaveseenSenator(andfrom1852to1854,Representative)ThomasHartBentonsittingatadeskinNationalStatuaryHall,
althoughithasnotbeenusedasalegislativechambersince1857.[5][6]SteveLivengood,chieftourguidefortheUnitedStatesCapitol
HistoricalSociety,sayshehasseentheghostofformerRepresentativeWilburMills(DArk.)nearMills'formerofficelateatnight.[7]Pierre
CharlesL'Enfant,althoughnotapolitician,wasabrevetMajorduringtheAmericanRevolutionaryWarwhoservedwithGeorgeWashington

AlthoughL'Enfantsubmittedgrandioseplansforthenewcapitalcity,hisplanswereneverfully
adoptedandPresidentWashingtondismissedhim.[8]L'Enfantspentmuchoftherestofhislife
attemptingtowrestamonetarypaymentfromCongress,andhediedinpovertyin1825.[8]
Eyewitnesses,however,claimtohaveseenhisspiritwalkingthroughtheCapitol,headdown,
murmuringtohimself,withtheplansforthecapitalcitytuckedunderhisarm.[9]
TheCapitolhasalsobeenwitnesstomurderanddeath.Rep.WilliamP.Taulbeehadbeena
congressmanfromKentuckyfrom1884to1888.[10]CharlesE.Kincaid,ajournalistforTheLouisville
Times,hadaccusedTaulbeeofadulteryandinvolvementinaPatentOfficescandal,whichhadruined
Taulbee'spoliticalcareer.[10]OnFebruary28,1890,theexcongressmanandthereporterranintoone
NationalStatuaryHall,saidtobe
anotherintheCapitol,andTaulbeeassaultedandembarrassedKincaidbytweakingthemuchsmaller
hauntedbyanumberofformer

man'snose. Kincaidranhome,grabbedapistol,and,whenheencounteredTaulbeeonamarble
staircaseleadingfromtheHousechamberdowntothediningroom,shothiminthefacejustbelow
Taulbee'slefteye.[10]Taulbeediedtwoweekslater,andKincaidwasacquittedafterclaimingself
defense.[10]ThestepswhereTaulbeewasshotstillcontainthebloodstains.[10]Journalistsandothersclaimthatwheneverareporterslipson
thesesteps,Taulbee'sghostbrieflyappears.[11]FormerPresidentandthenRep.JohnQuincyAdamssufferedastrokeathisdeskintheHouse
chamberonFebruary21,1848,andwastakenintotheSpeaker'sRoom.[12]Hisphysicalconditionwastooprecarioustopermithimtobe
moved,andhediedattheCapitoltwodayslater.[12]ManypeopleclaimtohaveheardAdams'ghostdenouncingslaverylateatnightin
NationalStatuaryHall,andoneCongressionalstaffmemberclaimsthatbystandinginthespotwhereAdams'deskoncestoodapersoncan
stillheartheformerpresident'sghostlywhisper.[2]JamesA.GarfieldwasamemberoftheHousefrom1863to1881beforeassumingthe
PresidencyinMarch1881.[13]GarfieldwasshotbyCharlesJ.Guiteau,adisgruntledofficeseeker,onJuly2,1881,at9:30a.m.ashewalked
throughtheSixthStreetStationoftheBaltimoreandPotomacRailroadinWashington,D.C.[13]Garfielddiedofheartfailurebroughtaboutby
bloodpoisoning(itselfcausedbypoormedicalcare)onSeptember19,1881,whilerecuperatingatabeachhousenearLongBranch,New
Jersey.[13]WitnesseshaveseenGarfield'sspecterwalkingsolemnlythroughthehallsofCongress.[14]
NotallCapitolhauntingsarerelatedtopeoplewhoworkedthere.The"DemonCat"isallegedtoprowlthehallsofCongress,andmake
appearancesjustbeforeanationaltragedyorchangeinPresidentialadministration.[15]Itwasfirstseenintheearlypartofthe19thcentury,and
anightwatchmanshotatitin1862.[1]IthasalsobeenseenbyothernightwatchmenandmembersoftheCapitolPolice.[16]Itappearedbefore
theassassinationofPresidentAbrahamLincoln,theOctober1929stockmarketcrash,andtheassassinationofPresidentJohnF.Kennedy.[7]
Thecathasnotonlybeenseeninthehalls,buthasrepeatedlyappearedinWashington'sTomb.[17]TheTomb(twolevelsbelowthecrypt
beneaththeCapitolRotunda)wasanoriginalfeatureoftheCapitol,plannedasarestingplaceforGeorgeWashingtonandmembersofhis

theCapitol.AfeweyewitnesseshaveclaimedthatwheneveranindividualliesinstateintheCapitolRotunda,aWorldWarIdoughboy
momentarilyappears,salutes,thendisappears.[17]Asecondapparition,whicheyewitnessessayistheghostofanAmericanRevolutionaryWar
soldier,hasalsoappearedattheWashingtonTomb.Accordingtoseveralstories,thesoldierappears,movesaroundtheLincolncatafalque,
andthenpassesoutthedoorintothehallwaybeforedisappearing.[3]

CapitolHillisoneofthelargestandmostdenselypopulatedneighborhoodsinWashington,D.C.Itisboundedby
FStreetNEonthenorthandSoutheast/SouthwestFreewayonthesouth.TheU.S.Capitolmarksitswestern
boundary,whiletheAnacostiaRiverisitseasternlimit.AlthoughCapitolHillhasbeenhometomanyofthecity's
powerful,itshauntingsappeartobefew.Oneghost,however,issaidtohauntFirstStreetNE.JosephHoltwas
JudgeAdvocateGeneraloftheUnitedStatesArmyfrom1862to1875.[19]Hepresidedoverthetrialsofthe
Lincolnassassinationconspirators.[19]Duringthetrials,accusedconspiratorsDr.SamuelMudd(whotreatedJohn
WilkesBooth'sbrokenleg)andMarySurratt(atwhosedowntownboardinghousetheconspiratorsmet)wereheld
attheOldCapitolPrisonoppositetheU.S.Capitol(themoderndayUnitedStatesSupremeCourtBuildingstands
onthesitetoday).[20][21]AfterHoltretired,heallegedlybecamearecluseinhisCapitolHillhome.[22]Although
theHolthousenolongerexists,localresidentshavetoldstoriesofHolt'sghostwalkingdownFirstStreetNEina
bluesuitandcape,ponderingtheguiltofMuddandSurratasheheadsforthesiteoftheOldCapitolPrison.[22]

CapitolHill'sotherhauntingsareassociatedwiththetwomilitaryinstallationsinthatpartofthecity.Atthe
officialresidenceoftheCommandantoftheMarineCorpsBarracksandParadeGroundon8thStreetSE,thereare
storieswhichtalkaboutrustlingpapers,thesoundofamanpacing,andtheappearanceoftheghostlyimageof
SamuelNicholas,thefirstCommandantoftheMarineCorps.[23]AtthenearbyWashingtonNavyYardat8th
StreetSEandMStreetSE,theghostofCommodoreThomasTingeyissaidtostareoutoftheupperwindowsof
theTingeyHouse(thetraditionalresidenceoftheCommanderoftheNavyYard).[24]Localresidentsandpressreportsalsotellstoriesabout
"OldHoward,"acantankerousformerU.S.Marinewholivedinthe1860sinatwostoryhousebetweenGandIStreetsSEwhonowhauntsit,
harassingtheoccupantsandactingmuchlikeapoltergeist.[17]

TheWhiteHouseistheoldestbuildingonPresident'sPark.Anintegralpartoftheplannedcitythatis
Washington,D.C.,adesignwaschosenandconstructionbegunin1792,andthebuilding(although
unfinished)wasopenedforoccupancyonNovember1,1800.[25]Thefirstpeopletooccupythe
buildingwerePresidentJohnAdamsandhiswife,Abigail.[25]Partsofthemansionwereunfinished,
includingthecavernousEastRoom.[26]Withnorunningwater(itwasnotinstalleduntil1834),water
hadtobebroughtintothehousebyjugandheatedforbathingorlaundrytobedone.[27]AbigailAdams
oftenhungthefamily'slaundryuptodryinthedraftyEastRoom.[26]TheghostofAbigailAdamshas
beenseensinceshortlyafterherdeathin1818,armsextendedasifshewerestillcarryinglaundryinto

ThelastsightingofLincoln'sghostwasintheearly1980s,whenTonySavoy,WhiteHouseoperationsforeman,cameintotheWhiteHouse
andsawLincolnsittinginachairatthetopofsomestairs.[35]
AbrahamLincolnisnottheonlyLincolnghostwitnessesclaimtohaveseenintheWhiteHouse.WillieLincoln,
AbrahamLincoln's11yearoldson,diedintheWhiteHouseoftyphoidonFebruary20,1862.[37]WillieLincoln's
ghostwasfirstseenintheWhiteHousebystaffmembersoftheGrantadministrationinthe1870s,buthas
appearedasrecentlyasthe1960s(PresidentLyndonB.Johnson'scollegeagedaughter,LyndaBirdJohnson
Robb,sawtheghostandclaimstohavetalkedtohim).[4]

ToddLincolnclaimedtohaveheardthestompingandswearingofaninvisiblepresencewhichsheclaimedwas
theuncouthJackson.[40]WhiteHouseseamstressLillianRogersParkssaidshewassewingintheQueen's
Bedroomandfeltapresence,coldair,andthenahandonthebackofherchair.[30]Shequicklylefttheroom,andfortherestofhertimeinthe
WhiteHousesherefusedtoentertheroomagainwithoutatleastoneotherpersonaccompanyingher.[30]ThespiritofWilliamHenry
Harrison,itisclaimed,hauntstheattic,[36]andPresidentJohnTylerallegedlyhauntstheBlueOvalRoom.[17]FirstLadyFrancesFolsom

TheWhiteHouseisalsosaidtobevisitedbythreespecterswhodidnotlivethere.ThefirstisthatofDavidBurns,whoownedthegroundon
whichtheWhiteHousestandsbeforesellingittothefederalgovernmentinMay1791,andwhosespirithasbeenseeninOvalOffice.[4]A
reportertoldasecurityguardduringtheTrumanadministrationthat,whilestandingintheYellowOvalRoom,heheardafaintghostlyvoice
whichsaid,"I'mMr.Burns."[3]ThesecondspiritisallegedlythatofaBritishsoldierdressedinauniformfromtheWarof1812andcarryinga
torch.[35]InAugust1814,acombinedBritishlandandseaforcecapturedWashington,D.C.,andsetfiretotheWhiteHouse,Treasury
Building,Capitol,andotherbuildingsinretaliationfortheAmericanlootingofYork,UpperCanada(nowthecityofToronto)andtheburning
oftheParliamentBuildingsofUpperCanadaaftertheBattleofYorkin1813.[42]Thefireswereputoutonlywhenahurricaneandtornado
passedthroughWashingtonthefollowingday,extinguishingtheblazes.[42]ThesoldierisclaimedtobeoneofthosewhoburnedtheWhite
House,orwholosthislifethefollowingdayinthestorm.AnothershadeallegedtovisittheWhiteHouseistheghostofAnnaSurratt,
daughterofconvictedLincolnassassinationcoconspiratorMarySurratt,whoforcedherwayintotheWhiteHousethenightbeforeher
mother'sexecutionandunsuccessfullybeggedforhermother'slife.[21][43]ItisclaimedbysomeWhiteHousestaffthatAnna'sghostreturnsto
theWhiteHouseeveryJuly6,silentlybangingonthefrontdoortoseekentranceandcontinueherfutilepleasforhermother'slife.[22]

LafayetteSquaresignallingtohiswife.[44]Sicklesrushedoutintothepark,drewapistol,andshotthe
unarmedKeythreetimeswhiletheothermanpleadedforhislife.[44]Keywastakenintothenearby
BenjaminOgleTayloeHouseanddiedmomentslater.[46]Key'sspirit,eyewitnessesandauthorsclaim,
nowhauntsLafayetteSquareandcanbeseenondarknightsnearthespotwherehewasshot.[39]
DecaturHouse(748JacksonPlaceNW)isallegedlyhauntedbytheghostofStephenDecatur.In1820,
CommodoreJamesBarronchallengedCommodoreDecaturtoaduelovercommentsDecaturhadmade

togodownthestairs,shefelldownthestairs(orovertherailingstoriesdiffer)anddied.Herspecterisallegedlyseencrumpledatthebottom
ofthestepsoronthestairsnearthesecondfloorlanding,andsometimesexhibitsitselfasthelightofacandlemovingupthestaircase.[59]The
otherdeath,storiesclaim,occurredin1817orshortlythereafter.AnotherofColonelTayloe'sdaughterselopedwithayoungman,incurring
herfather'swrath.Whenshereturnedhometoreconcilewithherfather,theyarguedonthethirdfloorlanding.Thisdaughter,too,felltoher
deathdownthestairs(orovertherailing),andhershadeisallegedtohauntthethirdfloorlandingandstairsbetweenthesecondandthird

TheOctagonisalsobelievedbysometobehauntedbythespiritsofAfricanAmericanslaveswhooncelivedthere.[61]Whenthehouseheld
bellstosummonservants,thespiritsofthedeadslaveswouldannouncetheirpresencebyringingthesebellsloudly.[62]Theghostlybell
ringingfirstoccurredinthe1870s.GeneralGeorgeD.Ramsay,ChiefofOrdnancefortheUnitedStatesArmyandcommanderofthe
WashingtonArsenalinWashington,D.C.,wasattendingadinneratTheOctagonwhenallthebellsinthehousebeganringing.AsMarian
Gouverneur,wifeofSamuelLaurenceGouverneur,Jr.(thefirstAmericanconsulinFooChow,China),relatedthestory,GeneralRamsay
seizedthebellropestostopthebellsfromsounding,buttoeveryone'sshocktheydidnotstopringing.[63]AlthoughGouverneur'sreportwas
notmadeuntil1911,themysteriousringingofthebellshadbeenreportedin1874[64]andagainin1889,[62]eachtimeattributedtothespirits
ofdeadslaves.
OtherspiritsarealsosaidtoremainatTheOctagonaswell.DolleyMadison'sspirithasbeenseennearthefireplaceinthemainballroomas
