Germantown seeks alternate design for intersection improvements

The village of Germantown is at odds
with the design for improvements at the
intersection of Lannon Road and
Appleton Avenue that have been proposed by the state Department of
Transportation (DOT).
The situation was explained at the
Dec. 7 Germantown Village Board meeting. According to information provided
to the board from village staff, the DOT
has jurisdiction over right of way while
the village has jurisdiction over mainte-

nance for Appleton Avenue. Under a

Memorandum of Understanding, the village had to coordinate with the DOT for
the resurfacing of Appleton Avenue. In
a memo to the board, Village Engineer
Brionne Bischke said the DOT proposed
a design that would be needed for projects which are funded by the state or
the federal government.
"In my opinion, however, the design
significantly exceeds what would normally be acceptable for municipality

funded projects," Bischke said in the

memo. The project will be funded
through the village's Tax Incremental
Finance (TIF) district for the area, and
Bischke stated the DOT design "unnecessarily stresses the TID's budget for the
project.
During the board meeting, Bischke
said the DOT design is "the Mercedes
version of what they're looking for."
He said Appleton Avenue is considered a connecting highway, which has

lower standards than those upon which

the DOT design was based.
In response, village staff requested
$3,000 to have the R.A. Smith firm to
prepare an alternate design which will
be presented to DOT staff.
"We would be spending $3,000 to
save six figures of money," Bischke said.
The board approved the request.

The countdown to 2016 has just about begun. If youre like many people,
you might be mulling over some New Years resolutions, such as hitting the
gym more, learning a new language or taking a cooking class. All are worthy
goals, but why not add some financial resolutions as well? For example
Pay yourself first. Even if you arent living paycheck to paycheck,
you probably dont have much trouble spending your money because
theres always something that you or a family member needs, always a
repair required for your home or your car, always one more bill to pay. But
if you are going to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable
retirement, you need to invest consistently. So before you pay everyone
else, pay yourself first by having some money automatically moved from
your checking or savings account each month into an investment.
Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have a 401(k) or similar
plan at work, take full advantage of it. Contribute as much as you can
afford or at least enough to earn your employers match, if one is offered
and choose the mix of investments that give you the potential to achieve
the growth you need at a level of risk with which you are comfortable.
Focus on the long term. In the short term, you might be excused for not
wanting to invest. The headlines are typically scary, the financial markets
are frequently volatile and the future often looks murky. Yet, if you can
look past the uncertainties of today and keep your focus on tomorrow, you
will find it easier to follow a disciplined investment strategy that gives you
the opportunity to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.
Dont be driven by fear. When the market is down, investors tend to
react with fear. Specifically, they rush to sell their investments, afraid that
if they dont cut their losses, they might sustain even bigger ones. If you
can get past this feeling, you may find that a down market can offer you the
chance to buy quality investments at good prices.
Forget about the hot stocks. Youll hear friends, co-workers and
talking heads on television tout todays hot stocks. But by the time you
might hear about them, they may have cooled off and, in any case, they
might not be appropriate for your needs. Forget about getting rich quick
in the market it probably wont happen. True investment success
requires patience and persistence.
Cut down on your debts. Its easy to pile up debts, but a lot harder getting rid of them. Yet, if you can reduce your debt load even moderately,
youll free up money you could use to invest. So look for ways to conserve,
cut back and consolidate it will be worth the effort. Making these resolutions and sticking to them can help you as you work toward achieving your financial goals.

Students at Amy Belle Elementary School were honored for their efforts
to collect toys for the Kapco Kids to Kids Christmas drive for the
Salvation Army with a school assembly on Dec. 11. During the assembly. School Principal Rick Grothaus said that teachers chipped in and
"everyone was doing it together." The toys were collected over a twoweek period. Students were treated to an appearance by Frosty the
Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer at the event, and
teachers sang a school-related holiday song. (Right) Students line up

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on your

website and they look amazing! My problem is that I
have had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt
and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to please
help me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out to
chew. Can you fix this dentists dentures so I dont have
to pay for another set! Please help me, as I cant live this
way.
Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You did
not mention if this was an immediate set of dentures
given to you the day your other teeth were removed or
simply a replacement for older dentures. There is an art
to making dentures and even with tremendous care and
skill; denture fabrication is a process that requires
patience. As people live with dentures they experience
continued bone loss. There is so much bone loss that
dentures begin to move and may actually slide during
chewing even with using denture adhesives. When teeth
are removed you actually lose up to 40% of the
remaining bone width in the first year after teeth are
removed and you can continue to lose 40-60% of the
remaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!
The solution is to save teeth if possible and if not
practical to place mini-implants or traditional implants to
preserve the bone.
Implants preserve bone! That means that over time
dentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.
I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fitting
dentures usually require that they be made again from
scratch. It is just too easy to change someones denture
and then feel that the changes that were made could have
made your situation worse! So most dentists will want to
start over with new impressions, brand new teeth and
mountings to try and remedy the problems you have
experienced. Trying to make your dentures fit may
actually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of
money, which would be wasted if your dentures could
not be made to be comfortable.
In rare situations, I will work with someones old
dentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores or
simply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

BOYS BASKETBALL

Germantown tops Homestead

BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Germantown boys basketball team was

undefeated after its first six games of the season.
On Dec. 15, Germantown limited Grafton to
nine points in the first half on the way to a 7238 win. Tyler Behrendt led Germantown with
14 points while Juwan McCloud added 12
points for the Warhawks.
On Dec. 11, a three-point basket by Tyler
Behrendt gave Germantown a 3-0 lead against
Homestead 12 seconds into the game and the
Warhawks never reliquished the lead on the
way to a 76-48 win over their North Shore
Conference rivals. Germantown held a 25-15
lead with 7:17 left before halftime after Juwan
McCloud converted three free throws after
being fouled on a three-point basket attempt.
Germantown entered halftime with a 15-point
lead and expanded on that lead throughout the
second half.
McCloud led all scorers with 27 points while
Behrendt added 12 points for Germantown.
Afterward, Germatown Coach Mark Adams

noted that Homestead kept changing defenses

every time Germantown went down the coach
during the first half and a portion of the second half, alternating between a few zones and
a man-to-man. Adams said he told his team to
not let that bog them down.
"We've got a way to attack no matter what
kind of defense it is, we just have to be patient
and realize that we've done this before and
look for the open man and get the open shot,"
Adams said.
He added that Germantown was also able to
get points off of getting the defensive rebound
and pushing the ball up the court before
Homestead had an opportunity to set up its
defense.
McCloud added that beating a rival from an
adjacent school district is notable.
"It is a rivalry game, so we come into this
with a little more energy than any other game.
So I think we did that today," McCloud said.
In the state Division I coaches poll released
early in the week, Germantown was ranked second, behind defending state champion Stevens
Point.

Former JV coach fondly remembered

successful program. Steve was an integral part

of those accomplishments and a tremendous
resource of knowledge, not just on the basketball court but on life in general," Dalton said.
Stuve noted that Dalton was a fan of UCLA
basketball Coach John Wooden, and Wooden's
"pyramid of success" is given to all members of
the team at the beginning of the season.
Stuve then went over the values of the base of
the pyramid in remembrance of Dalton.
On the value of "industriousness," Stuve
noted that Dalton had detailed practice plans
"and an unmatched work ethic. He gave everything he had to make sure his players were prepared for every game."
On the value of friendship," Stuve said
Dalton "was as reliable and kind-hearted a
friend as you will ever come across. He was
genuine in his actions and he cared deeply for
others."
On the value of loyalty, Stuve said Dalton
"gave us complete support to the players and
fellow coaches. He worked diligently every day
to make the program as good as it could be."
On the value of cooperation, Stuve said
Dalton always did what was best for the
greater good of the program. Dalton, Stuve
said, was adaptable "and had a keen understanding of the big picture at all times."
On the value of enthusiasm, Stuve said
Dalton "truly enjoyed teaching the game of
basketball. He enthusiasm for learning was

inspirational to all of us. Even with 30 years of

experience he was still eager to learn new
things and do everything he could be the best
at every facet of coaching."
Stuve noted that over the past several years
Dalton underwent treatment for cancer and his
physical stature lessened, but Stuve said his
passion for the game and his dedication to the
program was stronger than ever.
"Steve's legacy is embodied by this year's
program motto: 'Whatever you do, work at it
with all your heart,'" Stuve said. "Steve exemplified this in all he did and for that we are
profoundly and eternally grateful."
Stuve then added: "As I look back on
Steve's final season last year, I realize he was
not dying as much as he was showing us all
how to live -- and that's with integrity, sincerity, kindness, generosity, with passion and
enthusiasm for all you do."
As Stuve spoke, a photo of Dalton was displayed on screens behind both baselines of the
basketball court.

Village Board notes

Fireworks contract approved
The Germantown Village Board
approved the contract with Bartolotta
Fireworks Company Dec. 7 to stage the
fireworks show on the Fourth of July.
The contract amount of $14,862.50 is
the same as last year. The Germantown
Kiwanis Club will pay $7,431 before
Jan. 1 while the village will pay the
remaining$7,431 in July. By signing the
vendor contract in December, Bartolotta
is able to take advantage of end of year
pricing on supplies and pass the savings
on to the village.
Recreation post to be filled
The Germantown Village Board
approved a request to hire a full-time
recreation supervisor. According to
information from village staff, the position has been in place for at least seven
years, the supervisor is responsible for
the Kid's Klub Before and After School
program, and is also involved in the
planning and oversight, youth and
adult recreation and community special
events.
Adam Breest served as recreation
supervisor from February to Nov. 19,
when he resigned to become Director of
Parks & Recreation for the village of

Little Chute.
Senior items approved by board
The Village Board approved an
agreement between the villlage's Senior
Center and Washington County. Under
the annual agreement, the village
receives $6,000 from the Washington
County Aging and Disability Resource
Center to provide prescheduled programs and services at the Senior Center.
The board also approved an agreement
between the Senior Center and the
county under which the county pays
the village $600 for use of the Senior
Center for the Washington County
Senior meal program.
Election inspectors approved
The board approved election inspectors for 2016 and 2017.
When asked how people are appointed to the positions, Clerk Barbara K. D.
Goeckner said the Democratic and
Republican parties have to submit a list
of to the clerk's office by Nov. 30 of
individuals they want to serve as election inspectors. She said the parties
have to contact the individuals to
make sure they want to work and their
schedule. Once the Clerk's Office
receives the list, they contact the indi-

viduals to confirm the information. If

people opt not to serve as election
inspectors, that information is relayed
back to the parties. The office also
alerts the parties to any individuals who
may be disqualified from serving as
clerks for any given reason.
Goeckner said unaffiliated inspectors are individuals not aligned with
any party. She said that under state law
the Village is required to use inspectors
from the party lists before using unaffiliated inspectors.
The inspectors are:
