Description
(1)

The OXYGEN CONTAINER contains (See Fig. 1):

the chemical oxygen generator(s) (one or two as applicable to the quantity of masks),

the mask assemblies,

a container assembly.

The mask assemblies are connected to the chemical oxygen generator by supply tubes
and lanyards.
(2)

The Chemical Oxygen Generator

The chemical oxygen generator has a stainless steel housing filled with Sodium Chlorate
(NACLO3). It has an outlet manifold with two or more ports (depends on the number
persons the oxygen generator should supply) for the connection of the mask supply tubes.
The oxygen generator has a firing pin which is held in position by a release pin that, if
removed starts the oxygen flow.
The release pin has an eyelet for the connection of the mask lanyards.
The oxygen generator has an indicator dot on its ignition side (see Fig. 3) that shows the
condition of the oxygen generator as follows:

If the indicator dot is coloured BLUE the oxygen generator has been BURNED OUT.

If the indicator dot is coloured PINK the oxygen generator is NEW or NOT USED.

The chemical oxygen generator is located at the outer structure of the box assembly. It is
attached with a clamp.
The oxygen generators of the 6XC22 SERIES (22 min.) have an additional thermal shield
to limit the rise of temperature of surrounding parts. The thermal shield is attached by the
generator clamp.
(3)

The Mask Assemblies

Each mask assy is an oronasal phase-dilution type which has a rubber face piece with a
valve housing. It gives a 100% oxygen flow from its reservoir bag and has a limited dilution
by ambient air. Furthermore it lets escape the exhaled air. The valve housing contains:

three valves:
-

a dilution-,

an exhalation valve,

a bag valve.

a reservoir bag with a supply tube which has a flow indicator that shows the correct
flow oxygen.

An elastic head band holds the mask assy in place during its usage. A lanyard cord is
attached to the eyelet of the valve housing that makes the connection to the release pin
of the oxygen generator (Ref. CMM 35-21-87 (FSCM 53655) for more details).
The mask assemblies are protected against dust or moisture by a protection cap. The
protection cap is located within the box assembly and has two supply tube access holes.
It is attached with two cable ties to the box structure.

The Container Assembly

The container assembly has:

a door assembly,

a box assembly.

The door assembly is connected to the box assembly by door hinges which are attached
by each a pin and a locking washer.
Two light shields (rubber profiles) at the sidewalls are installed to minimize the gap between
the container assy and the adjacent part (e.g. panel,...) of the aircraft.
(a)

(b)

(5)

The door assy has:

two door locking bolts,

a test button,

two access holes for a manual release tool.

The door locking bolts engage with the door latches of the box assembly. They
hold the door assy closed as long as the door latches are released by an
electrical power signal or a manual release tool.
The door locking bolts are installed in a bolt support of the door.

The test button lets the door assembly open some degrees for inspection and
testing. It prevents a mask drop and a repacking of the mask assemblies when
the door assy is closed again.

The two access holes are used for a manual release tool that is necessary to
open the door assy manually (e.g. during shop maintenance or in case of a
malfunction of the electrical door latch).

The box assembly contains:

a double door latch assembly,

four fixation hinges,

a box structure.

The double door latch is used to open the door assy automatically when 115
VAC electrical power is supplied to its electrical terminals. It locks the door
locking bolts when the door assy is closed.
The double door latch consists of two single latches which are electrically
connected in parallel (See Fig. 2001 of section SCHEMATICS AND WIRING
DIAGRAMS).
The single latches are attached to the box structure, each with three screws.

The fixation hinges are necessary to attach the container assy easy and quick
to the aircraft.
The fixation hinges are attached to the box structure, each with a clasp.

The different types of OXYGEN CONTAINERS are identified by their specific part numbers,
which contains these informations:

the number of masks,

the type of oxygen used in the system,

Operation
(1)

General
The OXYGEN CONTAINER (See Fig. 1) operates as a part of the aircraft emergency
oxygen system. It is installed into the aircraft passenger compartment to supply the
passenger with the necessary quantity of oxygen during emergency.

(2)

Door Operation
An unusual decrease of the cabin pressure (above a cabin height of 4267,0 meter (14000
ft.), 60 kPa (8.864 psi)) activates a cabin pressure sensor. That gives a pulse to the
electrically operated double door latch assy which releases and opens the door assy so
that the masks can fall out.
After the masks have been released from the OXYGEN CONTAINER they hang down over
the passengers head on their lanyards.

(3)

Oxygen Supply
The lanyards are connected to a release pin which is installed on the firing pin of the oxygen
generator.
In this condition the chemical oxygen generator is prepared for emergency oxygen supply.
A pull to one or all masks removes the release pin and lets the firing pin move into the
oxygen generator. This causes the ignition and therewith the reaction of the chemicals
within the oxygen generator. The production of oxygen starts and cannot be stopped until
the oxygen generator is empty (6XC15 Series = min. 15 minutes / 6XC22 Series = min.
22 minutes) and / 6XC36 Series = min. 36 minutes).
The oxygen flows with low pressure through the mask supply tubes into the reservoir bag
which inflates and then into the mask assy.
The flow indicator installed in the mask supply tubes shows the correct oxygen flow.

(4)

Mask Operation
The oxygen flows through the reservoir bag and a bag valve (non-return type) into the
mask face piece.
(a)

Inhalation
1

(b)

The passenger breathes in:

the depression of the reservoir bag lifts the bag valve,

the oxygen flows as long as the reservoir bag is empty.

The passenger continues to breathe in:

the dilution valve lifts (non-return type),

this lets the ambient air go into the mask face piece.

Exhalation
1

The passenger breathes out:

the dilution and the bag valve close,

the exhalation valve opens and the air breathed out is bled.

During breathe out, the oxygen:

continues to flow through the mask supply tube (via the flow indicator),

inflates the reservoir bag for the next inhalation.
