The Fourth Sunday of Advent

December 20, 2015
Greetings of peace!
Last week I preached about the experience of new things in our lives. Advent is a liturgical season, which
causes us to reflect on the wonder of God coming into the world as a human being, as a baby! It is not exactly
what the world expected at that time, and in many ways, were not still spiritually prepared.

One of the ways that we can cultivate our spiritual life is to try new things. We can try new kinds of prayer, try
to get to k now holy people better, read new spiritual books or change our routine of prayer.

St. Anthony has a rich tradition to cherish and protect, but its good for institutions to try new things as well.
Below are some of our new initiatives.

The Shrine has a new partnership with Boston Health Care for the Homeless. We are going to run a medical
clinic for homeless women every Tuesday morning at the Shrine. Numbers will be small at first and we will
evaluate as we go. The Shrine was picked as a site for this womens clinic because we are known in the city as a
safe, welcoming community. This new clinic is scheduled to begin in early February.

The Womens Lunch Place (WLP), is located on Newbury Street in Boston. It is a safe, welcoming day community
for all self-identified women who are experiencing homelessness or poverty. The Shrine has partnered with
WLP and Dignity U Wear to provide needy Boston women with brand new clothes. We are thrilled to have this
new partnership with The Womens Lunch Place. (See Matthew 25:31-46.)

We recently began a regular weekday 5:15pm Mass at the Shrine. Please help us to spread the word on this.
We hope people find this to be a convenient time to attend.

As we near year-end, please consider a gift to St. Anthony Shrine. Our unique Lazarus program, a program
which provides dignified funerals for the homeless, and our Franciscan Food Center always have significant
expenses. The Shrines annual budget is more than $3.5 m illion, so we need to raise, on average, about $10,000
every day of the year. If you have any questions about giving to the Shrine, please contact me at
tconway@stanthonyshrine.org or 617-426-0623.

Have a joyful fourth week of Advent!
