The National Trust

Shifting Shores DVD

STUDLAND BAY

The National Trust

Our Professional project started when we had our first meeting with two representatives
from The National Trust. We went through the brief with the clients and discussed what it
was that they were looking for. It was from this initial meeting that we felt that the project
was something both Sam and I were not particularly interested in.

We later went on to have a few more meetings with the clients but sadly still felt that we
were not suited for the project. Our reasoning for deciding to abandon the project was that
Sam and I were in between minds about weather or not that this would be our last year at
university. On this bases we felt that if this as going to be our last project we needed to
make it good enough so we could use it in the future for our showreels. We both agreed
that this project was not going to cut it for us and decided to pull out. It was a sad way to
finish things this way having spent 3-4 weeks liaising with the clients and coming up with
ideas for the DVD. But it was a decision Sam and I felt was the best for us.

MTV
D&AD Live Brief

TWO MINUTE VIRAL VIDEO

Screen grab of viral video

Both Sam and I are particularly interested in 3D and motion graphics and felt it would best
suite us if we produced something in this area. We managed to come across a live brief
from MTV as part of the D&AD design awards. The D&AD awards are very well know
within the design field and we felt that producing some work for the competition would
benefit us by gaining exposure to industry professionals. The brief we chose was to
produce a two minute viral video for MTV. The brief stated that MTV should be seen as a
virus and that we should visually represent how it invades and takes over in certain
situations such as a party. This sounded like a great challenge for Sam and I as we started
working on it right away by story boarding some ideas for the video.

As we started producing mock ups of the idea we had agreed on we started to get a little
worried about our approaching deadline. The idea Sam and I came up involved a lot of
work. In a very small amount of time we needed to film, edit, learn a new program, motion
track, animate 3D, render, composite and finally present. This was extremely daunting as
we started to panic about the workload and timing.

What Sam and I then decided would be the best idea was to keep on working on this
project on the sidelines but in fact do something completely different for our professional
project. It is a shame it worked out like this but I feel that if we had started this MTV project
the day we received this unit we would have had enough time to produced the idea we
had thought of. I am still looking forward to completing this project and feel better about
the fact that we do not have time restrictions so we can produce something we are both
happy with rather the a quick rush job.

Digital Media Production
The Arts Institute, Bournemouth

PROFESSIONAL BLOG

Blog Template

The project we have now worked on and will be presenting as part of our Professional
Project is a website for Digital Media Production, a course that will be starting in
September 2008 at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth. The new course is a development
of the current FDA Interactive media course. Our brief for the project is to basically set up
a blog site and fill it with content based around the course and its students. Although this
initially sounded like a very quick project to produce it has taken a while to work on. What
we wanted to achieve by the hand in deadline was to actually set up the bolg on the
servers at university but unfortunately this was not possible. It would have been really
good if we could have sorted this out in time because we could have used one of the
templates I had designed within the blog. Instead we have had to deal with a free
wordpress blog for the time being. Once the sever side situations have been sorted out it
should not take to long to transfer all our hard work into the nicer blog template.

The content that we have placed into the blog so far is a series of tutorials for all the
software we use on the course and some other interesting applications. We also have
sections on interesting books and podcasts that relate to digital media and the course its
self.

James Chinemana FDA Interactive Media Professional Project IMD153 7

The general idea behind the site is that we make a start on the bulk of the design and feel
of the site but as time goes by student and lecturers will be able to upload their own
content. This will build up the site and turn it into a really informative website which anyone
interested in digital media will find very useful. The site will function more as an online
home for the entire course, both for students and staff alike which is something that is
currently missing on the course.

Conclusion

The idea of doing a professional project in our second year was a bit strange to me
because I felt it would have been better suited for the third year. To me that would have
made more sense so once you had completed it and the year at university you could go
straight into a full time job if all went well on the project. But as it is, it runs in a second
year of studies which is still a good thing because there are many course that do not offer
a unit such as this.

It is really unfortunate the way in which things panned out for our professional project. If
we cold go back and do this again I would defiantly have started the MTV project from day
one and seen it all the way through until our hand-in instead of starting and stopping so
many projects in the time we had given to us. If we had done that we would have had
plenty of time to do all of the work that we needed to do in order to produce the full 2
minute viral.

To sum it up, the professional project has been a valuable learning experience had has
taught me the importance of time management. If my time management had been more
organised I think we would have spotted that the National Trust project was not for us and
that in fact what we were really looking for was something that we could use in our
showreels. I think this would have meant that we found the MTV project a lot earlier and
therefore be able to complete it.

Synopsis of study

We are to produce and deliver a DVD to Brian Long on behalf of the National Trust by the
12th of May 2008. The DVD is to be used as an introduction to various National Trust
seminars around the country and is also intended to be screened in front of intellectual
members of the public. The content and purpose of the DVD is to inform and promote the
awareness of sea rise around Studland bay. The DVD should present relevant facts and
statistics of the effects sea rise will have on Studland bay over a period of 50 to 100 years.
It is also required that the opinions and views of the local inhabitants of Studland bay and
its surrounding areas are expressed in the short presentation on the DVD. An average
view about the effects of sea rise in the future from the 1.2 million tourists that visit the
area is also a necessary element of the DVD.

In order to produce a relevant and commercially viable DVD it is important that we obtain
the appropriate material about sea rise. We need to source both secondary and primary
data about Studland bay and its surrounding sea data. We will need to look into
predictions and try to establish how factual they are and whether or not to included them
into the presentation through a process of evaluation. As we will be required to conduct
interviews, we must thoroughly research the subject matter of sea rise and eventually
piece everything together. Together we will meet with our clients, discuss the project at
hand and share our developments with them. This will be done in a series of documented
notes and write-ups.

Brian Long has asked us to produce the material for the DVD in such a way that it is
evoking, thought provoking and a modern approach to increasing awareness of such
global issues like as sea rise. The way in which we plan to do this will become clear once
we begin to delve into our research and data collection process of the project. The client is
particularly interested in raising the awareness of sea rise around Studland bay as it is the
most important part of National Trusts income in the UK. As the National Trust is a charity-
based organisation it relies heavily on any donations it receives and any income it can
generate. As Studland bay is one of the best sources of income for the organisation it is
within their best interest to raise awareness of the problem and together with the local
community come to some sort of understanding in what to do next.

Synopsis of study

For this unit we will create a website in the form of an online blog to advertise and provide
information regarding the newly re-branded course of Digital Media Production. Our
intentions for this website are to provide new comers and current students with a base for
information regarding the many elements of the course.

The website/blog will contain many elements to help grasp the course as whole. We aim
provide sections as follows:

• Tutorials to help introduce software used and software that students may come across
during their time on the course.
• Recommended literature and reading and links to where to get hold of these books.
• Information regarding the staff and background information.
• An ever expanding collection if links to resources and points of interest.
• Dedicated page to podcast that are either already available or will soon be provided by
the course
• Dedicated page to RSS feeds that users can subscribe to for information related to the
course.
• A page for showcasing past and present students work.
• A page for showcasing events and projects held by Digital Media Production.
• A page allowing student to showcase work done using skills learnt from the course.

The idea behind having this website as a Blog is to gain to advantages of the new
generation of world wide web users. As is the current trend today, user generated content
is show casing a new potential for sharing knowledge on the internet. By having this as a
Blog it will allow students and staff to easily contribute to it anywhere the world, on any
computer platform and without the need for additional software.

We will be using the well known and widely used Blogging platform, Wordpress.com. By
using the already establish platform we will be able to seamlessly integrate it with the
courses current server and provided the base for future staff and students to update and
edit with ease.

On top of the content we will also be providing a new graphical user interface for the site.
Whether it will be by HTML, CSS or Flash we don"t know yet and this will be figured out
when we know more about the technology we are working with.
