Basicrequirements.Exitroutesmustmeetthefollowingdesignandconstructionrequirements:

Anexitroutemustbepermanent.Eachexitroutemustbeapermanentpartoftheworkplace.
1910.36(a)(2)

Anexitmustbeseparatedbyfireresistantmaterials.Constructionmaterialsusedtoseparateanexitfromotherpartsoftheworkplacemusthavea
onehourfireresistanceratingiftheexitconnectsthreeorfewerstoriesandatwohourfireresistanceratingiftheexitconnectsfourormorestories.

Openingsintoanexitmustbelimited.Anexitispermittedtohaveonlythoseopeningsnecessarytoallowaccesstotheexitfromoccupiedareasofthe
workplace,ortotheexitdischarge.Anopeningintoanexitmustbeprotectedbyaselfclosingfiredoorthatremainsclosedorautomaticallyclosesinan
emergencyuponthesoundingofafirealarmoremployeealarmsystem.Eachfiredoor,includingitsframeandhardware,mustbelistedorapprovedbya
nationallyrecognizedtestinglaboratory.Section1910.155(c)(3)(iv)(A)ofthispartdefines"listed"and1910.7ofthispartdefinesa"nationallyrecognized
testinglaboratory."

Thenumberofexitroutesmustbeadequate.

Twoexitroutes.Atleasttwoexitroutesmustbeavailableinaworkplacetopermitpromptevacuationofemployeesandotherbuildingoccupantsduring
anemergency,exceptasallowedinparagraph(b)(3)ofthissection.Theexitroutesmustbelocatedasfarawayaspracticalfromeachothersothatifone
exitrouteisblockedbyfireorsmoke,employeescanevacuateusingthesecondexitroute.

Morethantwoexitroutes.Morethantwoexitroutesmustbeavailableinaworkplaceifthenumberofemployees,thesizeofthebuilding,itsoccupancy,
orthearrangementoftheworkplaceissuchthatallemployeeswouldnotbeabletoevacuatesafelyduringanemergency.

Asingleexitroute.Asingleexitrouteispermittedwherethenumberofemployees,thesizeofthebuilding,itsoccupancy,orthearrangementofthe
workplaceissuchthatallemployeeswouldbeabletoevacuatesafelyduringanemergency.

Eachexitdischargemustleaddirectlyoutsideortoastreet,walkway,refugearea,publicway,oropenspacewithaccesstotheoutside.

Thestreet,walkway,refugearea,publicway,oropenspacetowhichanexitdischargeleadsmustbelargeenoughtoaccommodatethebuildingoccupants
likelytousetheexitroute.

Exitstairsthatcontinuebeyondthelevelonwhichtheexitdischargeislocatedmustbeinterruptedatthatlevelbydoors,partitions,orothereffectivemeans
thatclearlyindicatethedirectionoftravelleadingtotheexitdischarge.

Anexitdoormustbeunlocked.

Employeesmustbeabletoopenanexitroutedoorfromtheinsideatalltimeswithoutkeys,tools,orspecialknowledge.Adevicesuchasapanicbarthat

inches(2.0m)fromthefloor.

Anexitaccessmustbeatleast28inches(71.1cm)wideatallpoints.Wherethereisonlyoneexitaccessleadingtoanexitorexitdischarge,thewidthof
theexitandexitdischargemustbeatleastequaltothewidthoftheexitaccess.

Thewidthofanexitroutemustbesufficienttoaccommodatethemaximumpermittedoccupantloadofeachfloorservedbytheexitroute.
